Enter a Fortnite island code from the lobby by opening Play, using the Search bar in the Play/Discover area, typing the 12-digit code in xxxx-xxxx-xxxx format, selecting the matching island, and choosing Play. On PC, you can also use Change above the Play button, select Island Code, enter the code, press Enter, review the island details, and click Play. If you are already in Creative, enter the code at a portal’s console.
What a Fortnite island code is
An island code is the identifier Fortnite assigns to a Creative island after the island is published. Epic describes it as a code that creators can share so other players can access their island. Codes use three groups of four characters, written as xxxx-xxxx-xxxx, for a total of 12 digits.
The publishing status matters. Epic’s Creator Programs support documentation says that only public or privately published Creative islands have an associated island code. An unpublished project does not have a working island code, even if its creator has shared an edit-session link or a project name.
- Island code: the 12-digit identifier used to load a published Creative island.
- Island name: a searchable text alternative when you do not have the numeric code or the code is not returning a result.
- Creator code: a Support-A-Creator identifier. It is not an island code and cannot be used to open a Creative map.
- Custom key: another Creative access value that may appear in search fields, but it is different from the 12-digit island code.
You do not need a special controller, keyboard, subscription, accessory, or paid item to enter a code. The procedure is part of Fortnite’s normal Play and Creative interfaces.

Fastest method: Play, Search, then Play
This is the general route Epic documents for finding an island from the lobby. It works with a keyboard and mouse on PC and with a controller on PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch. Menu wording can move after an update, but the Play/Discover search field is the most consistent place to start.
- Launch Fortnite. Wait for the lobby to finish loading, then select Play.
- Open Search. In the Play or Discover area, choose the search bar. Epic’s search field accepts an island name, an island code, a creator code, or a custom key.
- Enter the island code. Type all 12 digits in the familiar
xxxx-xxxx-xxxxgrouping. Include the hyphens if the field displays them; if the field formats the code automatically, type the digits in order and let Fortnite insert the separators. - Choose the matching result. Check the island title and creator name before launching. This prevents you from opening a similarly named result or an unofficial copy.
- Select Play. Fortnite loads the selected island and places you in its available game flow, such as a public match, private session, or creator-defined start area.
What you should see after searching
A valid, published code should produce an island result with identifying information. The title and creator shown in the result are useful confirmation that the digits were entered correctly. If no result appears, do not assume the code is invalid immediately: check the troubleshooting steps below, then try searching for the island by name.
Using a controller in the search field
On a console, move the selection to the Search bar, press the controller button shown for select, and use the on-screen keyboard to enter the digits. Navigate to the matching result and choose Play. The labels and button prompts can differ by console and Fortnite interface revision, but the sequence remains Play, Search, code, result, Play.

PC players have a second explicit route from the lobby. It puts the code field in a dedicated Island Code screen instead of the general Discover search.
- From the Fortnite lobby, locate the Change button above Play and click it.
- On the mode-selection screen, select Island Code in the top navigation bar.
- Click the code field and enter the 12-digit code in
xxxx-xxxx-xxxxformat. - Press the keyboard’s Enter key to confirm the entry.
- Review the island information, including its title and creator.
- Click Play to launch the island.
This route is useful when you want a clearly labeled code-entry page or when the general search field is showing many Discover categories. It is not a separate type of code: both lobby routes resolve the same published island identifier.

Console method: use the same lobby path
PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch players can use the Play/Discover Search route without opening a PC-specific screen. Use the controller to follow this sequence:
- Select Play from the lobby.
- Open the Search bar in the Play/Discover area.
- Enter the 12 digits with the on-screen keyboard.
- Highlight the result whose title and creator match the intended island.
- Select Play.
If the console interface exposes a separate Change screen or an Island Code tab, it is also safe to use that option. The important distinction is to choose the island-code entry field, not a field intended for a creator code or a custom key.

When the console route is preferable
- Use Play/Search when you are starting in the lobby and want the shortest path.
- Use the portal-console route when you are already inside the Creative hub.
- Use island-name search when the digits are difficult to read or a code has stopped returning a result.
Creative hub method: enter a code at a portal console
Fortnite’s Creative hub provides an in-world way to enter an island code. This is especially convenient when you have already loaded Creative and do not want to return to the lobby.
- Load Creative from the Fortnite mode selector.
- Press Play and wait for the Creative hub to appear.
- Approach a featured or golden rift (portal).
- Find the console beside the portal and interact with the console itself. Epic documents that a console sits next to every portal.
- Choose the option to enter an island code, then type the 12-digit value in
xxxx-xxxx-xxxxformat. - Confirm the entry and review the island information shown by Fortnite.
- Accept the launch prompt to load the island.
A portal’s console is the interactive object for code entry; looking at the rift without activating its console may only show a portal prompt. Epic’s Creative documentation also notes that another portal’s console can accept an island code supplied by a developer, so you do not have to find a particular themed portal for a code to work.
Which entry route should you use?

The Play/Search method is generally the fastest when you are in the lobby. The portal-console method provides more context when you are already walking around the Creative hub. Search by island name is less precise than a code but is useful when a code is mistyped, difficult to read, or no longer indexed.

How to avoid entering the wrong code
Check the format
Count 12 digits and check the three four-digit groups. A copied code can contain a missing digit, an extra digit, or a character that looks like a number. Re-enter it slowly rather than relying on a partially selected field.
Confirm that it is an island code
Creators may share several kinds of Fortnite codes. A Support-A-Creator code identifies a creator for attribution; it does not open a map. A custom key is also distinct from an island code. For a Creative island, the expected value is the 12-digit identifier in xxxx-xxxx-xxxx format.
Verify the result before launching
Read the displayed island title and creator. If either does not match the information you were given, cancel the launch and check the code. This is faster than loading an unintended map and trying to determine why it looks different.
Why a Fortnite island code may not work
The code contains a transcription error
The most common cause is a single incorrect digit or an incorrect hyphen grouping. Recheck all 12 digits against the original message or screen. If someone read the code aloud, ask them to send the text so visually similar digits are not confused.
You entered the wrong kind of code
If the value is a creator code or custom key, the island-code field may reject it or return no matching island. Ask for the island’s published code specifically, then enter that value in the Play/Search or Island Code field.

The island is no longer published
Island codes are associated with public or privately published Creative islands. An unpublished project does not have a usable island code. The creator must publish the island again, or provide a currently available published version, before players can access it by code.
You are using the portal incorrectly
Inside Creative, interact with the console next to the portal and select its code-entry option. Merely approaching the rift, entering the portal, or interacting with a different object will not open the code field.
The interface moved after an update
Fortnite periodically changes the layout of Play and Discover. If an older guide points to a button that is missing, return to the lobby and use Play followed by the Search bar. Epic documents that search as the general path for an island name, island code, creator code, or custom key.
The search result is delayed or absent
First retry the exact code, then search for the island’s name. A name search can confirm whether the island is discoverable even when the numeric entry was mistyped. Compare the creator shown in the result with the expected creator before selecting Play.

- Leave any incomplete code field and reopen Play → Search (or Change → Island Code on PC).
- Enter all 12 digits again, preserving the
xxxx-xxxx-xxxxgrouping. - Make sure the field is the island-code field, not creator-code or custom-key search.
- Inspect the returned title and creator before launching.
- If no result appears, search by the island’s name.
- Ask the creator whether the island is still publicly or privately published.
- If you are in Creative, retry from the console beside a portal rather than from the portal surface itself.
- If menus do not match an older set of instructions, use the current Play/Discover Search bar.
This sequence separates input mistakes from availability problems. A corrected entry that returns the expected title indicates a typing or route issue; a correctly entered code that still has no result points toward publication status or a changed island listing.
What happens after you select Play
Fortnite loads the island information associated with the code and starts the island’s configured experience. The exact number of players, privacy behavior, matchmaking settings, and starting location are controlled by the island’s creator and are not determined by the code-entry procedure itself.
If you intended to join friends, make sure you launch the same title and creator result they used. Entering a valid code for a different island will work technically but will not place you in the intended experience.
