Enter only after you have found the complete official rules independently, confirmed that the promotion is free, and understood every cost and deadline assigned to a winner. A legitimate sweepstakes will not require payment to enter, improve your odds, or release a prize.
Start with the official rules, not the advertisement
A social post, email, video, or web banner is an invitation to investigate—not the contract that controls the giveaway. The specific promotion’s official rules determine who may enter, how an entry becomes valid, how a winner is selected, and what the winner must pay or provide.
Find those rules through a website address that you locate yourself. Do not rely solely on a link, telephone number, or email address in an unexpected message. A familiar company name, logo, or celebrity image can be copied by an impersonator.
Confirm the legal sponsor and administrator
Read the opening section of the rules for the sponsor’s full legal name and, if different, the promotion administrator. Search for the promotion on the sponsor’s independently located website and check that the same name, dates, prize description, and entry instructions appear there. If you cannot identify a real sponsor or administrator, stop before submitting personal information.
Record the sponsor’s name, administrator, official website address, and a contact method that you found independently. This gives you a reliable way to verify a later winner notification.

Check eligibility before entering
Look for every restriction, not just a headline such as “open to U.S. residents.” Rules may limit entry by:
- Age or legal majority in the entrant’s state
- State, territory, or other place of residence
- Employment by the sponsor, administrator, their agencies, or related companies
- Family or household relationships with excluded employees
- A valid driver’s license or another qualification connected with the vehicle
Do not assume a promotion is nationwide. A person who is ineligible can lose an entry and may create problems during winner verification if the rules require a signed eligibility statement.

Write down the exact opening and closing date, time, and time zone. A submission made a few seconds after the stated deadline can be invalid even if the web form still accepts it. Note whether the promotion has separate daily, weekly, or final-drawing periods.
Save a screenshot or PDF of the rules as they appeared when you entered. Include the page showing the version date if one is provided. Sponsors can update web pages, and your saved copy shows the terms you reviewed.
Understand every permitted entry method
Rules should explain the accepted route, such as an online form, mail-in entry, or another specified method. They should also state whether an entrant may submit one entry for the entire promotion, one per day, one per email address, or another limit. Multiple accounts, automated submissions, or entries made on behalf of another person may be prohibited.
If an advertisement promotes a purchase, membership, or subscription, look for the free alternate method of entry. A purchase must not be necessary to enter or to improve your chance in a legitimate sweepstakes. Follow the alternate method exactly; an informal workaround that is not described in the rules may not count.

Find the drawing method and odds information
Look for the date or schedule of the drawing, the way a potential winner is selected, and how odds are described. Odds can depend on the number of eligible entries, so a fixed probability may not be available. The Arizona Attorney General advises that bona fide offers clearly disclose material terms such as rules and entry procedures and usually disclose odds; the exact disclosure obligations depend on the promotion and applicable law.
Be cautious when a message promises that you are “guaranteed” to win or that a payment will increase your odds. Those statements conflict with a chance-based, free sweepstakes model.
Examine what the car prize actually includes
“Win a car” is not a complete description of the obligation. The rules should identify the make, model, trim, approximate value, or a specific vehicle description. They should also explain whether the prize can be substituted and whether color, options, or delivery dates are subject to availability.

Only the promotion’s current rules can tell you which of these the sponsor pays. If the rules say the winner is responsible for a category of expense, estimate whether you could afford it before entering.
Check whether the stated value is an estimated retail value, a cash alternative, or another figure. If the rules permit substitution, note who chooses the substitute and whether it may differ in value. Look for instructions about delivery territory, pickup deadlines, and whether a winner must accept the vehicle “as is.” If a material term is absent, do not fill the gap with assumptions from another giveaway; ask the sponsor for a written explanation or decline to enter.
Review privacy and consent language
Find the privacy policy and the consent clauses attached to the entry form. Determine what information is collected, which companies may receive it, how it may be used for marketing, and whether promotional calls, texts, emails, or postal mail are authorized.
The Federal Trade Commission warns that promoters may sell entrant information, resulting in targeted advertising and more promotional mail, calls, and email. The California Department of Justice similarly warns that entering can increase telemarketing calls, junk mail, and spam. A promotion can be genuine and still have privacy terms you do not accept; declining to enter is safer than providing information without understanding the consent.
Use only information the rules require. Never provide a Social Security number, bank account, payment-card number, or a copy of identification through an unverified form or message.
Before clicking submit, distinguish information required to administer the giveaway from optional marketing fields. Uncheck optional consent boxes when the form allows it, and look for an opt-out address or unsubscribe process. Keep a copy of the privacy notice and consent screen because a later marketing message may not make clear which permission it relies on.
Keep an entry record
Create a small record for each promotion. It helps you recognize an authentic contact and prove which terms you reviewed.

Save the completed entry confirmation, confirmation number, and the rules in the same folder. If the form does not provide confirmation, capture the final screen showing the submission date and time.

Use a calendar reminder for the published drawing or notification window, but do not treat a reminder as proof that a message is authentic. The rules, not a social-media comment or a direct message, establish the official deadline. If you enter through more than one permitted route, record each route separately so you do not accidentally exceed the stated limit.
Recognize payment and pressure scams
The clearest warning sign is a demand for money. The FTC states: “If you have to pay to get your prize, it’s a scam.” A real sweepstakes cannot require a fee to enter or a payment to improve your odds.
Scammers may call the charge a tax, shipping fee, processing fee, insurance premium, customs duty, delivery deposit, or account-verification payment. The label does not change the warning. Do not send cash, cryptocurrency, gift cards, wire transfers, bank details, or credit-card details to release a supposed car.
Urgency is another warning sign. Treat threats such as “pay within the next hour,” “keep this confidential,” or “your prize will be forfeited unless you act now” as reasons to stop. A legitimate sponsor can state a response deadline in its rules, but you should still verify the message through a contact channel you found yourself.

What to do when a message says you won
Pause, especially if you do not remember entering the promotion. Do not click the sender’s link or call the number in the message as your only check.
- Save the message without responding. Keep the email headers, phone number, sender address, attachments, and any claimed promotion name.
- Find the promotion independently. Type the sponsor’s known web address yourself or use a trusted search. Search the company and promotion name with words such as “complaint,” “review,” or “scam,” as the FTC recommends.
- Compare the details. Check that the promotion existed, that its dates match your entry record, and that the claimed prize and administrator match the official rules.
- Contact the sponsor independently. Use a telephone number or email address published on the sponsor’s official website or in the rules—not the details supplied by the unexpected message.
- Read the verification instructions in the rules. Confirm the response deadline and the documents the sponsor says a potential winner must provide.
- Refuse any payment request. A legitimate verification process does not turn into an advance-fee demand.
A sponsor may legitimately request an affidavit, eligibility confirmation, tax form, or identity documentation. That possibility does not make every request genuine. Verify the sender and the request first, and transmit sensitive documents only through a channel confirmed independently.
Check the exact spelling of domains and email addresses. Impersonators often use an extra word, hyphen, or different top-level domain. A caller-ID display is not proof of identity because numbers can be spoofed. If the rules say a potential winner will receive notice by a particular method, a different method deserves extra scrutiny.
Understand taxes and other winner obligations
Do not assume a car prize is tax-free. IRS Publication 525 says prizes and awards are generally included in income and that noncash prizes are included at fair market value. For a vehicle, the relevant value and the timing of reporting can depend on the promotion and your circumstances.

Read the rules for the stated prize value, tax forms, and expenses assigned to the winner. A tax form request may be part of a real prize process, but it is not permission for anyone to demand an advance payment by gift card, wire, or cryptocurrency. Confirm the request with the sponsor independently before sharing personal information.
Individual tax outcomes vary. Consult a qualified tax professional for advice about your return, estimated payments, and the treatment of a noncash prize. Keep the rules, valuation information, correspondence, and receipts for costs you actually incur.
Taxes are only one possible obligation. Title and registration, insurance, transport, and other charges may be assigned to the winner in the rules. If those terms are missing or contradictory, ask the sponsor for clarification before entering or accepting a prize.
Do not confuse a sponsor’s statement that it will issue a tax form with a promise that it will pay your tax bill. A form records information for tax reporting; it does not eliminate the need to review the prize’s fair market value or your own filing obligations. Ask when the vehicle will be delivered and whether you must complete title or registration paperwork before taking possession.
Compare two car giveaways without guessing which is “safer”
No single feature proves that a promotion is legitimate. Compare the actual written terms using the same questions for each promotion.

Use “not stated” in your notes when a rule omits an item. An omission is a reason to request clarification or choose not to enter, not an invitation to assume the sponsor will pay.

If a promotion demands payment, requests sensitive information through an unverified channel, or impersonates a company, stop communicating and preserve the evidence. Do not forward the scam link to friends or test it with a small payment.

- I found the complete rules through a website or contact method I located independently.
- I can identify the legal sponsor and administrator.
- I meet the age, residence, employment, household, and license requirements.
- I know the start and end time, time zone, entry route, and entry limit.
- I understand the drawing and notification process and have not been promised a guaranteed win.
- I know exactly what vehicle and stated value are offered.
- I know which taxes, title, registration, insurance, transport, or other costs the winner must pay.
- I read the privacy and marketing-consent terms.
- I saved the rules and confirmation.
- No one has asked me to pay to enter, increase my odds, or claim the prize.
If any answer is “no,” do not submit an entry or respond to a winner message until you resolve that specific uncertainty through an independently verified source.
