You can enlarge a photo, but no resizing method can guarantee that the added pixels contain detail that was never captured. For the cleanest result, start with the largest, least-compressed original, decide on the final output size first, and resize once. For a small or soft image, compare conventional resizing with an AI upscale and inspect both for invented or distorted details.

What happens when you enlarge a photo?

A digital photo has pixel dimensions: its width and height in pixels. Enlarging through resampling increases those dimensions by calculating additional pixels from the existing image. This can make the file suitable for a larger display or print, but it does not recover scene information absent from the source. An AI upscaler may estimate plausible texture or edges; treat those additions as estimates, not verified original detail.

Pixel dimensions are not the same as physical print size. In Photoshop, changing print dimensions without resampling keeps the pixel count the same and changes the pixels-per-inch value. Resampling, by contrast, changes the pixel dimensions. Adobe explains these controls in its image size, resolution, and resampling guide.

Choose the output before resizing

Decide whether the image is for a screen, a specific print size, or a crop. For print, consider both the physical dimensions and how close people will view it. There is no single pixel-density figure that suits every print: Topaz Labs notes that the appropriate density depends on viewing distance, with more distance generally requiring less pixel density. Check the print provider’s requirements as well.

Plustek ePhoto Z300 Photo Scanner - CCD Sensor Scan 4x6 Photos in 2 sec
  • The easiest way to scan photos and documents. Supports 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 in sizes photo scanning but also letter and A4 size paper. Optical Resolution is up to 600 dpi ( PS: two setting: 300dpi/ 600dpi).
  • Fast and easy, 2 seconds for one 4x6 photo and 5 seconds for one 8x10 size photo@300dpi. You can easily convert about 1000 photos to digitize files in one afternoon and share with your family or friends.
  • More efficient than a flatbed scanner. Just insert the photos one by one and then scan. This makes ePhoto much more efficient than a flatbed scanner.
  • Powerful Image Enhancement functions included. Quickly enhance and restore old faded images with a click of the mouse.

If the final image needs a different aspect ratio from the original, crop to the intended shape before setting the enlargement dimensions. Otherwise, you may enlarge an area you later discard or end up with unwanted borders or distortion.

Use this workflow for a cleaner enlargement

  1. Find the best source. Use the original or the largest, least-compressed copy available. Avoid a file that has already been repeatedly resized or compressed; those changes can discard information. Topaz recommends starting from the original when possible in its upscale and resize documentation.
  2. Set the intended dimensions. Choose the screen or print dimensions and crop ratio before processing. For prints, confirm the provider’s file specifications and consider the expected viewing distance.
  3. Make one conventional resampling change. Use your editor’s image-size or resampling controls, then save a separate output while keeping the original untouched. Adobe cautions that repeated resampling can degrade image quality; avoid enlarging, saving, and enlarging the resulting copy again.
  4. Compare AI upscaling if the source is especially small or soft. Try it alongside the conventional resize rather than assuming it will be better. Photoshop documents its Generative Upscale feature in Adobe’s Photoshop guide; Topaz documents scale and custom-dimension controls for Gigapixel in its upscale guide.
  5. Inspect before using the result. Check faces, text, fine textures, and edges at 100% magnification and at the intended display or print size. Choose the version that looks convincing at the size and distance where it will actually be seen.

Conventional resizing or an AI upscaler?

Conventional resampling is a straightforward way to control pixel dimensions. AI upscaling adds model-based processing that may render a small image more convincingly, but can also alter fine details. Product documentation describes available features and recommended uses; it does not establish that one method will always produce the most faithful or attractive result.

When comparing options, weigh the source quality and how much enlargement is needed, the final output size and viewing distance, and whether the result preserves details that matter. A low-quality or heavily cropped source gives the software less information to work with. Topaz warns that low-quality input can produce unwanted artifacts in its upscaling guidance.

AI features and controls differ by product and can change. Adobe also documents Generative Upscale and AI Sharpen in Lightroom’s generative AI enhancement guide. Review current software requirements and supported output limits before choosing a workflow. For example, Topaz’s Gigapixel documentation states a maximum longest side of 32,000 pixels for the workflow it describes; this is a product limit, not a general image-enlargement standard.

How to judge the finished image

  • Look for artifacts: halos, odd edge patterns, smeared texture, or details that appear inconsistent with the rest of the image.
  • Check important content closely: inspect faces, lettering, and fine structures rather than judging only broad shapes.
  • Judge at the real use size: a flaw visible at 100% may be imperceptible at the intended viewing distance, while a result that looks sharp on a small screen may not hold up as a close-viewed print.
  • Keep the original: save the enlarged image as a separate file so you can revisit the source or try another method without compounding changes.
