To make an AI SRE agent useful—and safe—in production, give it current incident evidence, operational knowledge, and tightly bounded tool access. The context should connect an alert to the live service, its dependencies, recent changes, relevant runbooks, and verified observations. Then require the agent to explain its reasoning, validate any proposed action outside the model, and check whether the mitigation worked. “Context engineering” here is a practical design term, not a universally standardized discipline.
What context engineering means for AI incident response
In a self-healing SRE system, context engineering is the work of assembling and updating the information an agent needs to investigate an incident, recommend or perform a mitigation, and verify the result. The goal is not to stuff every document into a prompt. It is to provide the right evidence for the current incident, preserve where that evidence came from and when it was observed, and let the agent retrieve more as its investigation develops.
Static documentation can explain how a service is supposed to work; it cannot establish what is happening in production right now. The agent needs a connection from an alert to current telemetry and system relationships. Useful inputs include alert details, logs, metrics, traces, service topology, dependency information, recent changes, playbooks, known-safe mitigations, and relevant prior incidents.
Google’s May 28, 2026 engineering article describes an SRE AI approach that brings observability data together with system topology, taxonomy, and dependency data to form hypotheses or propose mitigations. Its more detailed AI operations paper describes dynamically selecting context such as deterministic observability enrichers, playbooks, specialized mitigation skills, and investigation examples. These are documented Google designs, not a universal recipe or proof that the same results will generalize to other organizations.

Build an incident-specific context packet
Start with a small, current packet tied to the alert, then retrieve additional evidence as hypotheses take shape. This is a practical design recommendation based on the inputs in Google’s documented approach and the distinct role of OpenTelemetry Context.
Include the evidence needed to orient the investigation
- Alert: the alert name, time, severity, affected service or component, and the signal that triggered it.
- Current health: the relevant logs, metrics, traces, and recent observations, with timestamps and enough identifiers to connect them to the affected service or request path.
- System relationships: service topology, dependencies, and relevant ownership or taxonomy information, so the agent can reason about downstream and upstream impact.
- Recent changes: deployments or configuration changes relevant to the affected service, where that information is available.
- Operational knowledge: applicable runbooks, known-safe actions, specialized mitigation guidance, and prior incidents that resemble the current symptoms.
- Tool boundaries: which tools are available, what each is authorized to do, and whether a tool call reads data or changes production state.
Keep evidence fresh and traceable
Store the source and observation time with each piece of evidence. The agent should be able to distinguish a current metric from an old incident note, and a verified observation from a hypothesis. Retrieve more detail when the investigation needs it rather than treating historical memory as a substitute for live telemetry. If a required signal is unavailable or stale, the agent should surface that limitation instead of silently treating it as current.
Do not confuse agent context with OpenTelemetry Context
OpenTelemetry’s specification defines a narrower technical meaning: “A Context is a propagation mechanism which carries execution-scoped values across API boundaries and between logically associated execution units.” The specification marks Context stable and requires it to be immutable: writing a value produces a new Context.

That mechanism can help propagate execution-scoped values, such as correlation information, across related operations. It does not define how to construct an AI prompt, retrieve runbooks, maintain agent memory, or design an incident knowledge base. Those are separate context-engineering concerns. Treating the API as if it supplied an agent’s operational knowledge would leave the agent without the incident-specific evidence it needs.
Separate investigation from production changes
An agent can investigate and propose a mitigation without being allowed to execute it. Keep production mutation behind a separate control boundary that checks the requested action, the incident, and applicable safety rules. Google’s AI operations paper describes this separation in its own system: a Mitigation Safety Verification Agent or Actuation Agent acts as a safety gateway. The described checks include dry runs, confirming that an action targets an open incident, and checking for concurrent actions. These are examples of one design, not mandatory components or proof that they eliminate risk.
Match autonomy to impact and uncertainty
Use a staged operating model. Google describes human review for critical operations, higher autonomy for bounded minor incidents, and escalation when an issue cannot be diagnosed or falls outside safe limits. The appropriate boundaries depend on the service and action; the paper does not establish a universal numerical readiness threshold.

- Evidence gathering: allow the agent to read approved telemetry and operational documentation while leaving all changes to people.
- Recommendations: have the agent form and test hypotheses, then present an evidence-backed action for an operator to approve.
- Bounded execution: consider narrowly scoped actions only for incident classes with sustained evaluation and explicit authorization limits.
- Escalation: stop and hand off when the diagnosis is uncertain, the case falls outside the approved boundary, or a safety check fails.
Use deterministic automation where it already meets the need; probabilistic agent behavior is most useful where it adds value rather than obscuring a well-understood procedure. Give the agent a clear identity, separate read permissions from mutation permissions, constrain its action scope, and provide a manual fallback. A mitigation may reduce immediate impact without fixing the underlying cause, so preserve the distinction between restoring service and resolving root cause.

Verify the action and observe the agent
After a mitigation, check the relevant service signal and determine whether the alert clears. Google’s AI Operator paper describes that feedback loop: if the alert remains, the agent can investigate again. Verification should use observable service outcomes, not the agent’s own claim that an action succeeded. If the expected signal does not improve, stop repeated action and escalate according to the incident policy.
Monitor the agent as well as the service. Google Cloud’s agent observability documentation identifies LLM interactions, tool use, agent behavior, performance, safety, and quality as monitoring areas. Its implementation includes Application Monitoring dashboards and topology maps, metrics derived from trace data following OpenTelemetry GenAI semantic conventions, and use of prompt and response data for evaluation. Those are vendor-specific product capabilities; the monitoring categories are useful independently of that implementation.

Record enough to reconstruct what happened
- Prompts and model responses, handled under the organization’s data and access policies.
- Tool calls, their inputs and outcomes, and whether each call read data or attempted a change.
- Step traces that show the evidence considered and the sequence of investigation.
- Latency, token use, and other relevant resource consumption.
- Safety-policy events, denied actions, escalations, and human approvals.
- Evaluation results for diagnosis quality, action safety, and observed service outcome.
Logs, metrics, and traces answer different operational questions; connect them to evaluation data so teams can investigate both system incidents and agent failures. Google’s paper says its execution traces are stored for debugging and improvement and describes comparison against human-verified “Golden Data.” It also reports “thousands of incidents,” without stating an exact count or a success rate on the page reviewed. That figure should not be read as a measured accuracy or proof of general effectiveness.

How to choose an approach
Compare implementations by operational fit rather than claims about how autonomous they are. The sources support these evaluation dimensions, but do not establish a universal vendor ranking.
- Current-state coverage: can it connect alerts to fresh logs, metrics, traces, deployments, topology, and dependencies?
- Operational knowledge: can it retrieve relevant runbooks, safe-action guidance, and useful prior incidents?
- Traceability: can operators reconstruct the agent’s reasoning steps and tool calls?
- Access and policy: are agent identity, permissions, read access, and mutation boundaries explicit?
- Action safety: are proposed changes validated, scoped, and paired with a rollback or fallback path?
- Evaluation: can teams test behavior against representative, human-reviewed incidents and monitor quality over time?
- Integration: does it fit existing observability and incident-management practices without hiding evidence in a separate workflow?
Keep the SRE fundamentals in place
AI does not replace monitoring, incident response, or postmortem and root-cause analysis. Those remain core SRE practices. A reliable self-healing system is not simply an agent with permission to act; it is a service-specific operating process that connects current evidence to bounded decisions, verifies results, records what happened, and hands control back when conditions are unsafe or unclear.
