Add the standalone -initbackup argument to the command that starts your Soulmask dedicated server. It takes no value: place a space after the existing arguments, then write -initbackup. Guides describe this as creating a world backup when the server starts, giving you a restore point before the new session loads the world. Because the flag is documented by third-party guides rather than an official Soulmask or developer reference, verify it after a restart by checking the server log and the backup directory.
What -initbackup does
-initbackup is a startup switch for a Soulmask dedicated-server launch command. When the host starts the server with this switch present, guides describe the server as making a backup of the existing world before the new session loads that world into memory. That makes it useful immediately before maintenance, configuration changes, or a game update: if the new session damages the world or a change has an unwanted effect, the pre-start copy is available as a restore point.
The switch is a flag, not a setting with a number. Write it exactly as -initbackup; do not append =1, a time value, or a filename. It also does not replace normal recurring saves or disk backups. Those are controlled by separate arguments described later.
No official Soulmask or developer document confirming this argument was identified. Its behavior is reported consistently in third-party server guides, so treat the first restart as a verification step rather than assuming that the presence of the text in a script proves that a backup was created.

Before changing the launch command
Make sure you are editing the real server start command
Many hosts start a dedicated server through a batch file, shell script, service definition, panel field, or scheduled task. Add the switch to the command that actually launches the Soulmask server process, not to a shortcut that is no longer used. If a control panel generates the command, use its startup-arguments field; otherwise the panel may overwrite a hand-edited script on the next deployment.
Stop the server cleanly
Shut down the running server before editing its launcher. A clean stop lets the server finish its ordinary save and prevents you from confusing a backup made at startup with files that are still being written. Do not edit the command while a restart is already in progress.

Before the first test, copy the current world directory to separate storage if you can. A startup backup is valuable, but its operation has not been independently confirmed by an official document, and a mistaken command or a storage problem should not leave you without the pre-change world.
How to add the startup-backup flag
- Stop the Soulmask dedicated server and wait for its process to exit.
- Open the launcher used by your host. On a self-managed Windows server this is commonly a
.batfile; on another host it may be a service or panel configuration. - Find the existing server launch line and leave every current argument unchanged.
- Append one space followed by
-initbackupat the end of that launch line. The argument has no value, so do not use-initbackup=trueor-initbackup=1. - Save the file or the panel setting. If the launcher is a service definition, reload or save the service configuration according to that service’s normal procedure.
- Start the server through the same launcher you normally use. Starting a different executable or shortcut will not test the edited command.
For a command that already contains several options, the only intended change is the added token. Conceptually, the line changes from existing launch arguments to existing launch arguments -initbackup. Keep the hyphen, spelling, and lowercase letters exactly as shown. Avoid adding the switch twice; duplicate arguments make troubleshooting harder and are unnecessary.
What should happen during the first restart
The startup sequence described by the guides is important: the server starts, creates a backup of the existing world, and then loads the world for the new session. That ordering is why the option is useful before an update or a risky configuration change. It is not described as a continuous backup process, and it should not be expected to create a new copy every few seconds while the server is running.

Allow the process to complete its normal initialization before judging the result. A slow disk, a large world, or a busy host can make file creation less obvious than the server startup itself. Do not interrupt the process merely because the console pauses while files are being written.
How to verify that a backup was actually created
There is no verified server-log line supplied for this flag, so verification should use both available signals: the startup log and the filesystem. A successful test should leave evidence in at least one of them and, ideally, both.
Check the startup log
- Start the server with
-initbackup. - Open the log produced by that launch and search for terms such as
backup,save,world, orinit. - Record the startup time and any message that appears immediately before the world is loaded.
The exact wording of a confirmation message is not established. Therefore, do not treat the absence of a familiar phrase as proof that the flag failed; use the directory check as well.
Check the backup directory
Guides list the backup location as:
WSSavedWorldsDedicatedLevel01_Mainbackup
The main world save is listed as world.db. Confirm the path on your own installation before relying on it: the drive, server root, or folder layout can differ between hosts, and a panel may relocate the data directory. Compare the directory contents and modification times before and after a controlled restart. A newly created or newly updated backup entry at the restart time is stronger evidence than the launch command alone.
Use a harmless test
For the first test, restart during a maintenance window and note the existing backup contents. Do not make an irreversible world edit solely to test the feature. The goal is to establish that a new startup-time file appears and that the server still loads the expected world.

Startup backups versus recurring save settings
Soulmask server guides describe three separate command-line controls. They should not be treated as interchangeable:

One guide shows an example using -saving=600, while other guides list 300 seconds as the default. The example should therefore be treated as an unverified configuration example, not as proof that 600 seconds is a default or a recommended value. If you change either interval, document the value you selected and confirm the resulting behavior on your server.
Adding -initbackup does not, by itself, change either interval. Conversely, setting -saving or -backup does not establish that a backup will be made at startup.
When a startup backup is most useful
Before a game update
Take the startup backup immediately before launching the updated server. If the update changes world behavior, causes an error, or exposes a compatibility problem, the pre-update copy gives you a known point to preserve while you investigate.

Before changing server settings
Use it before edits that could affect world generation, progression, persistence, or other data-sensitive behavior. Keep a written note of the old settings and the restart time so you can match the backup to the change.

Before maintenance on the host
A planned restart is a natural opportunity to create a fresh restore point. Startup protection is especially useful when the host is being moved, storage is being reorganized, or several configuration changes will be applied together.
It is not a substitute for independent, off-host retention. A backup stored on the same disk as the live world can be lost with that disk, and a startup copy does not protect changes made after the restart until another backup event occurs.

The argument was added to the wrong launcher
Confirm the process command line or the panel’s effective startup configuration. If a service, scheduled task, or management panel starts the server, editing an unused desktop shortcut or an old batch file will have no effect. Stop all server instances before testing so that an older process is not the one serving the world.
The spelling or syntax is wrong
Use the exact lowercase token -initbackup, separated from the preceding argument by a space. Remove a value such as =true and remove quotation marks that accidentally turn the flag into part of another argument. Check that the edited file was saved in the location used by the host.
The server was not restarted
This is a startup option. Saving the launcher while the server is running cannot create the backup. Perform a complete stop and start, then compare the backup directory’s timestamps.

The account cannot write to the data directory
Inspect the permissions of the account that runs the dedicated server and the free space on the volume containing the WSSavedWorldsDedicatedLevel01_Mainbackup path. A process can start successfully while failing to create a new file. Resolve the permission or storage issue, then repeat the controlled restart.
The path is different on your installation
Search from the server’s data root for the backup directory and for world.db. The path published in guides is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every installation uses the same drive or root folder.

No specific confirmation line has been verified for -initbackup. Treat the log as supporting evidence and rely on a newly dated backup file or directory entry as the practical check. If neither the log nor the filesystem changes after a clean restart, remove unrelated command-line changes and test the flag by itself on the normal launcher.
Restoring a world from a startup backup
A backup is only useful if you can identify it and restore it without overwriting your last good copy. The guides identify world.db as the main world save, but they do not provide a complete, officially documented restore procedure. Use this conservative process and adapt it to the files your installation actually contains:
- Stop the Soulmask server cleanly and verify that its process has exited.
- Make a separate copy of the current world directory, including the current
world.db, before replacing anything. - Open the backup directory and identify the backup created at the relevant startup time. Do not rely on a filename alone; use modification dates and the contents of the directory.
- Copy the selected backup to a temporary location and inspect it before making the live replacement.
- Replace the live world data only after you have preserved the current copy. Keep the same directory structure expected by the server.
- Start the server and check that the intended world loads. If it does not, stop again and restore the preserved current copy rather than repeatedly experimenting on the only remaining files.
Because the available guides do not establish whether every auxiliary file must be restored with world.db, do not assume that copying one file is always sufficient. Preserve the complete backup set when one is present.
A practical restart checklist
- Confirm that the server is stopped and that the correct launcher is being edited.
- Append exactly
-initbackup; do not assign it a value. - Record the current time, server version, and any configuration changes.
- Check available disk space and write permissions for the server account.
- Start through the normal service, panel, script, or scheduled task.
- Wait for world loading to finish.
- Review the startup log for backup-related activity.
- Check the installation’s backup directory and compare timestamps.
- Keep the pre-change world copy until the server has been tested successfully.
Limits of the evidence
The startup switch is supported here by consistent third-party guides, not by an official Soulmask or developer specification. No official quotation, published success rate, or independent benchmark establishes how long a backup takes, how many copies are retained, or the exact log wording. Retention, naming, and performance can therefore vary by server version and installation. Verify the behavior on the version and host you operate, and maintain an independent copy if the world matters.

The safest interpretation is narrow: -initbackup requests a backup at server startup. It does not prove a backup was written, define a retention policy, or replace ordinary saves and recurring disk backups. The log-and-folder check after a real restart is the operational confirmation.
