On an iPhone, open Settings > Notifications > Government Alerts and enable the categories you want. On Android, open Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts; if that path is different on your phone, search Settings for emergency alerts. These controls vary by country, carrier, phone model and operating-system version, and enabling them cannot guarantee delivery when the phone is incompatible, switched off, out of tower range or on a non-participating network.
iPhone and Android alert controls at a glance
Both platforms can receive government or public-safety broadcasts, but they do not use the same label. Apple places its controls under Government Alerts; Google’s general Android instructions use Wireless emergency alerts. The exact categories and additional switches depend on your region and the software installed on your phone.

Before you change a setting
You do not need to install an app, create an account or register your telephone number to receive a Wireless Emergency Alert in the United States. WEA is a geographic cell-broadcast system: compatible phones in the selected broadcast area are addressed by the network at the time of the alert. It is not a text message sent to a stored list of subscribers.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting. A phone can be configured correctly and still receive nothing if it is outside the targeted area, powered off, in Airplane Mode, outside active tower coverage or attached to a provider that does not participate in the system. Wi-Fi access alone does not replace the cellular connection required for a broadcast.

Alert controls also differ by jurisdiction. Apple’s examples use U.S. names such as AMBER and National Alerts, but those labels are not a universal list. Local authorities and carriers determine which categories are offered, and a phone purchased in one country may show a different set after it is used elsewhere.
How do I turn on emergency alerts on my iPhone?
Open the Government Alerts menu
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and look for Government Alerts.
- Turn on each alert category you want to receive.
The list is localized. In Apple’s U.S. example, it can include National Alerts, AMBER Alerts, Public Safety Alerts and Emergency Alerts. Do not assume that this exact list appears in another country.
If you see only a few categories, that does not necessarily indicate a problem. Apple says availability depends on the country or region, the iPhone model and the supported network provider. Some government alerts can be mandatory under local rules, so a switch may be unavailable or permanently enabled.

On supported iPhones, tap Emergency Alerts to expose additional controls:
- Local Awareness can improve the timeliness or relevance of alerts that apply to your immediate area. It is an optional setting and is not shown on every iPhone or in every region.
- Always Play Sound allows Emergency Alerts to make their warning sound even when the iPhone is in Silent mode. This switch is separate from the normal notification-volume setting.
Apple’s U.S. examples describe Emergency Alerts as including severe and extreme imminent-threat alerts. The category names, definitions and switches can differ elsewhere. Read the description shown on your own iPhone rather than assuming that every emergency message uses the same severity threshold.
What is already enabled by default?
Apple says Government Alerts are on by default on supported iPhones. They use a distinctive alarm-like sound, and local rules may prevent you from turning off certain categories. If you cannot find a switch for a particular government alert, that may be intentional rather than a settings error.
Receiving the feature also requires a SIM or eSIM from a supported network provider. An iPhone with no supported cellular service may not be eligible even when the menu is visible. If you recently changed carriers, replaced a SIM, moved countries or activated an eSIM, verify support with the provider before concluding that the alert setting failed.

Where are Wireless Emergency Alerts on Android?
Use Google’s general path
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Select Wireless emergency alerts.
- Enable the alert types and notification behaviors you want.
Depending on the phone, this screen can also show previously received alerts and controls for sound or vibration. Reviewing the history can confirm that a message arrived even if you dismissed its banner. Android’s menu is manufacturer-dependent, so a device may use slightly different capitalization, place the item in another Notifications subsection, or expose fewer categories.
Some handsets divide alerts into several levels or use separate switches for categories and notification behavior. Enable the categories relevant to your location, then review sound and vibration choices so an enabled alert is not inadvertently muted by a device-specific control.
Find the control when the path does not match
Use the Settings search field and enter emergency alerts, wireless alerts or cell broadcasts. Open the result that leads to alert types rather than a general safety-information page. If no result appears, check the phone maker’s current help documentation or ask the carrier whether the model supports the local broadcast system. A missing menu can reflect regional software or carrier configuration, not a fault you can fix with a sound setting.
Android updates can also reorganize the page. Start with the built-in search after an update instead of following an old screenshot. If the search returns more than one result, choose the entry that contains alert categories, past alerts, sound or vibration controls; the similarly named safety pages may describe other services.

Android has another feature called Crisis alerts. It is not the Wireless emergency alerts switch and should not be treated as a replacement for it.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety & emergency.
- Select Crisis alerts.
- Review the separate control there.
Google says Crisis alerts are on by default. They are a distinct Google alert mechanism, while Wireless Emergency Alerts are the device’s controls for compatible emergency broadcasts delivered through participating mobile networks. Keep both features enabled if you want the broadest coverage available on your phone and in your region. Turning on Crisis alerts does not turn on a disabled Wireless emergency alerts category, and vice versa.
Do I need to enable test alerts?
No. Test alerts are optional. FEMA’s testing guidance states that turning test reception on or off does not affect your ability to receive real emergency alerts.
Some Android phones place test choices inside the Wireless emergency alerts screen. Apple’s U.S. instructions for test alerts vary by iOS release, and the relevant switch may not be exposed in every country. The label may mention a national, operator or public-safety test rather than ordinary emergency messages.

Do not change Developer options to receive normal alerts. Developer settings are unnecessary for routine reception and can introduce unrelated configuration changes. Only use a test control when you deliberately want to participate in an authorized test and understand that it may produce a loud warning. A missing test switch is not evidence that ordinary alerts are disabled.
Why didn’t I get an emergency alert?
Turning on a menu option controls your preferences; it does not create a guaranteed delivery path. For U.S. Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), FEMA identifies several conditions that must be met at the same time.
- Compatible handset: The phone must support WEA. Older or region-specific models may not.
- Power and radio state: The phone must be switched on and not in Airplane Mode. A powered-off phone cannot receive a broadcast while it is off.
- Active tower coverage: You must be within range of an operating cell tower carrying the alert. A weak or absent cellular signal can prevent reception even when Wi-Fi works.
- Participating provider: The phone must be connected to a wireless provider that participates in WEA. Apple also requires a supported carrier SIM or eSIM for Government Alerts.
- Geographic targeting: WEA uses a geographic cell-broadcast area. It is not sent to a stored list of telephone numbers, and you do not subscribe to it with an app or mailing list.
These requirements explain why two people in the same building can have different experiences. One device may be compatible and connected to a participating network while another is roaming, lacks supported service or is outside the broadcast footprint. A delayed or absent alert is not automatically proof that a category switch was wrong.
Check the setting first
Return to the platform-specific menu and verify that the relevant category is enabled. On Android, inspect both the alert-type switches and sound or vibration controls. On iPhone, check Government Alerts and, where offered, the Emergency Alerts detail page. A test-alert switch is not a prerequisite for real messages.
Check the phone’s connection state
Confirm that Airplane Mode is off, the phone is powered on and the cellular line is active. Move to an area with reliable cellular coverage if you are indoors, underground or in a known dead zone. Wi-Fi calling or an internet connection does not by itself satisfy the cellular-broadcast requirement. If you use dual SIMs, make sure the supported cellular line is enabled; the carrier can clarify which line and plan are eligible.
Check compatibility and provider support
If the menu is absent, categories are unexpectedly limited or you have never received a local alert, ask the carrier whether your exact phone model, SIM/eSIM and plan support the relevant government-alert system. A carrier can also confirm whether it participates in WEA in the United States. Do not assume that a phone bought in one country supports every alert category after being used in another.
Consider whether the alert applied to your location
Because WEA is geographically targeted, a phone outside the broadcast area may not receive a message even when someone nearby does. Conversely, a phone near the boundary can receive an alert intended for an adjacent area. This behavior is a property of the broadcast area, not evidence that you need to register your number.

Regional, carrier and software differences
Country and region
Apple explicitly says Government Alert availability and categories vary by country or region. The U.S. labels used in examples—such as AMBER, Public Safety and National Alerts—should not be presented as a worldwide list. Other countries can use different authorities, names and broadcast standards.

The same iPhone or Android model can expose different categories when its SIM, eSIM, carrier configuration or regional software changes. A menu that looks different abroad is not necessarily defective.
Android manufacturer and version
Android is a broad device ecosystem. Google’s Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts route is general guidance, not a promise that every manufacturer uses the same hierarchy. A software update can move the item, rename a category or add a separate safety menu. Search Settings first, then consult the maker or carrier for the current wording on your model.
Operating-system updates
The menu instructions above reflect official platform guidance available on October 13, 2026. Apple and Android can change labels or placement in later updates. If the written path no longer matches your screen, use the built-in Settings search and look for the terms used in this guide rather than disabling unrelated notification features.
What an emergency-alert sound means
Government alerts are designed to be conspicuous. On iPhone, Apple describes a distinctive alarm-like sound. The normal silent switch can suppress ordinary notifications, but an iPhone with Always Play Sound enabled for Emergency Alerts can still sound for those messages. Android behavior depends on the alert type and the sound/vibration choices exposed by the handset.

- Identify whether the phone is an iPhone or Android device and note its current software version.
- Open the platform’s alert menu: Government Alerts on iPhone; Wireless emergency alerts on Android.
- Enable the categories that are available and relevant to your location.
- On Android, review past alerts and sound/vibration controls if the device provides them.
- On iPhone, inspect Emergency Alerts for Local Awareness or Always Play Sound when those options appear.
- Keep Android Crisis alerts under Safety & emergency > Crisis alerts in mind as a separate feature.
- Leave test controls unchanged unless you intentionally want to receive an authorized test; they do not control real-alert eligibility.
- For U.S. WEA, keep the phone on, out of Airplane Mode, within active tower coverage and connected to a participating provider.
- If a control is missing, search Settings and then verify model, SIM/eSIM, regional software and carrier support.
What enabling the setting can—and cannot—do
Enabling the available alert categories ensures that your phone is not opting out of those user-controllable messages. It does not turn a non-compatible handset into a WEA device, extend cellular coverage, replace a supported SIM/eSIM or guarantee that every geographically targeted broadcast reaches you. Delivery depends on the platform, local alert authority, carrier participation, radio conditions and your phone’s power state at the time of the broadcast.

No app download, mailing-list signup or phone-number registration is required for WEA reception. The practical action is to configure the built-in controls, keep the cellular connection usable and verify support when the menu or behavior differs from the instructions above.
