Enable it from WhatsApp’s Settings > Account > Two-step verification. Tap Enable, create the credential WhatsApp requests (an older account may still call it a six-digit PIN, while newer prompts can use a longer alphanumeric password), and add a recovery email when offered. Two-step verification is separate from the one-time registration code sent by SMS or phone call: you need the code to verify your number and the two-step credential to add another barrier against account takeover.
Enable WhatsApp two-step verification
The setting is available in the official WhatsApp app. The labels below reflect WhatsApp’s documented navigation; wording can vary while the service moves from the old six-digit PIN to a full password.
- Open WhatsApp.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Account.
- Tap Two-step verification.
- Tap Enable.
- Follow the prompts to create the requested credential.
- Add and verify a recovery email address when WhatsApp offers that option.
Choose a secret you can store safely and do not reuse on another service. Do not tell anyone your WhatsApp credential, and never share a WhatsApp registration code sent by SMS or phone call. A person who asks for either one is giving you a strong warning that they may be trying to take over the account.

After setup, return to Settings > Account > Two-step verification whenever you need to change the credential, update the recovery email, or review the account’s trusted-device information.

What you should see after setup
WhatsApp may continue to use familiar “PIN” wording in some places while it upgrades the feature. Other accounts may be prompted for a longer password containing letters, numbers, and potentially special characters. Follow the format shown in your own app rather than assuming that every account has the same prompt.
What two-step verification protects
WhatsApp describes two-step verification as an optional security feature that uses two forms of authentication, such as your phone-number verification by SMS plus a separate password or PIN. Meta says the extra layer is intended to help prevent someone from taking over your account even if that person obtains your one-time passcode.
There are two different secrets involved:
- Registration code: a one-time code delivered by SMS or phone call when a number is being registered. It verifies control of the phone number for that registration attempt.
- Two-step credential: the account-protection secret you create in the Two-step verification setting. It is not the same as the registration code and must not be disclosed.
Two-step verification therefore addresses a different point in the sign-in process from the SMS or call code. The code confirms the number; the additional credential makes an unauthorized registration attempt harder to complete.
Use a recovery email, and secure that email
When WhatsApp offers an email field during setup, add an address you control and verify it. WhatsApp identifies email as an additional recovery layer that can help you regain access if you forget the two-step credential, including situations in which you cannot use an SMS connection or phone connection for that recovery path.
The email is only useful if the email account itself is secure and current. Use an address you can still access, protect that mailbox with its own strong sign-in controls, and update the address in WhatsApp if it changes. Do not use an address that belongs to somebody else or one you expect to lose access to.

If you skip the email
You can still enable two-step verification without adding a recovery address if WhatsApp permits that choice, but you lose the documented email-based recovery route. A forgotten credential then becomes more difficult to resolve, so skipping the email is a deliberate trade-off rather than a harmless omission.
What happens if you forget the PIN or password?
The recovery options depend on whether you added and verified an email and whether the account is still under your control. If a recovery email is available, use WhatsApp’s in-app recovery flow and the messages sent to that address. Keep following the prompts shown by WhatsApp; the app may display password terminology even if you originally created a PIN.

If you do not control the account or an intruder is already using it, adding two-step verification at that point does not remove the intruder or restore access. WhatsApp’s account-security guidance is clear on this order of operations: recover the account first, then turn on additional protections. Do not assume that enabling a feature from a compromised session evicts another session.
When the recovery email is no longer accessible
First restore access to the email account through its email provider’s own recovery process. WhatsApp’s email recovery route depends on that mailbox being reachable. Once you regain the mailbox, retry the WhatsApp recovery instructions and then replace the old address with a current one in Settings > Account > Two-step verification.
Two-step verification and passkeys are different
A WhatsApp passkey is a device-based sign-in method linked to the device’s fingerprint, Face ID, or screen-lock code. The setup path documented by Meta is Settings > Account > Passkeys. It is separate from the two-step credential, although the two controls can work together: a passkey can make a supported sign-in faster while two-step verification remains enabled.

Meta reported in an August 2026 security announcement that more than one billion people use a WhatsApp passkey. That figure is Meta’s published count, not an independent measurement, and it does not mean a passkey replaces the separate two-step setting.

Set up a passkey when it fits your devices
Open Settings > Account > Passkeys and follow the device’s biometric or screen-lock prompts. A passkey is most convenient when you reliably control the phone that stores it. If you lose access to that device or its local unlock method, the passkey’s usefulness for sign-in is limited until you use another available recovery method.
Use app lock for local privacy
WhatsApp also lists app lock as an additional control. On supported phones it can use biometrics; on WhatsApp Web, Windows, or Mac, the control uses a password. App lock addresses a different threat from two-step verification: it limits someone who can open an already signed-in app or computer session, whereas two-step verification is designed to make account registration and takeover more difficult.
Check linked devices and remove anything unfamiliar
WhatsApp distinguishes trusted devices from linked devices used for WhatsApp Web, WhatsApp Desktop, and other multi-device access. Review the device list regularly, especially after using a shared computer, replacing a phone, or receiving an unexpected security prompt.
- Open WhatsApp and go to the account area where linked or trusted devices are displayed.
- Read every listed device and compare it with computers, browsers, and phones you intentionally connected.
- Remove or log out any device you do not recognize.
- Change your two-step credential and review the recovery email if an unfamiliar device appeared.
An unfamiliar linked device is not proof of how access was obtained, but it is a reason to treat the account as potentially exposed. Do not wait for a message to be sent from that device before removing it.

Recognize and respond to takeover warnings
Unexpected requests for your registration code, two-step credential, or passkey approval should be treated as takeover attempts. A legitimate contact does not need you to forward a code that WhatsApp sent to your number. Stop the conversation, do not approve an unfamiliar prompt, and review linked devices.
If you still control the account
- Remove unfamiliar linked devices.
- Confirm that the recovery email is yours, verified, and current.
- Change the two-step credential from Settings > Account > Two-step verification.
- Use a passkey and app lock if your device and operating system support them.
- Continue using only the official WhatsApp app.
If someone has already taken over
Do not rely on enabling a new setting inside a session you no longer trust. Follow WhatsApp’s account-security recovery process to regain the account first. Once access is restored, remove unknown devices and then enable or reconfigure two-step verification, the recovery email, passkey, and app lock.
Use the official app and keep the device trustworthy
Meta Engineering warns that unofficial WhatsApp clients can contain malware capable of stealing authentication keys and allowing attackers to impersonate victims. Device Verification is designed to detect suspicious connections and block them without requiring an additional action from the user.
Install WhatsApp only through the official distribution channel for your device. Avoid modified clients, copied installers, and files sent by unknown contacts. Device Verification is a server-side protection against suspicious connections; it is not a reason to ignore an unfamiliar app, browser session, or request for a code.
A practical protection plan
Use this order when securing an account that is currently under your control:

- Verify the app: make sure you are using the official WhatsApp client.
- Enable two-step verification: use Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Enable.
- Create a unique credential: store it in a secure place and do not reuse it elsewhere.
- Add the recovery email: verify it and secure the email account.
- Review devices: remove every linked device you cannot identify.
- Add device protections: set up a passkey and app lock where supported.
- Recheck after changes: revisit the Two-step verification page after changing phones, email addresses, or computers.
This sequence separates account recovery from local privacy. The credential and recovery email address unauthorized registration; linked-device review limits existing multi-device access; passkeys and app lock use the device’s own security system to make legitimate access easier and unauthorized local access harder.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
The menu says “PIN,” but the prompt asks for a password
WhatsApp is upgrading the old six-digit PIN to a full password that can be longer, alphanumeric, and potentially include special characters. Read the current prompt and create the format it accepts. Do not assume that a six-digit value is required if the app is asking for a password.
The recovery email message does not arrive
Confirm that you entered the correct address, check that mailbox’s spam and filtering folders, and make sure you can sign in to the mailbox. If the address is obsolete or inaccessible, restore the email account first or update the address from the Two-step verification settings while you still control WhatsApp.
A device in the list is unfamiliar
Remove it immediately, then change the two-step credential and verify the recovery email. Treat unexpected code or passkey requests at the same time as evidence that someone may be attempting registration.
You enabled a setting after an account takeover
Additional features do not themselves remove an existing intruder. Use WhatsApp’s account-security recovery process to regain control, then repeat the security setup on the recovered account.
You cannot use SMS or a phone connection for recovery
A verified recovery email can provide the documented email-based route for recovering a forgotten two-step credential without an SMS or phone connection. The route still depends on access to that email account.
