To enable proximity voice chat on a V Rising server, create a Unity Gaming Services project, activate Vivox Voice and Text Chat, copy its four credentials into ServerVoipSettings.json, place that file in the server’s active Settings folder, and restart the server. Every player must then turn on Use Voice Chat (also labeled Proximity Voice chat in some hosting instructions) under Options > Sound.
Check whether your server supports voice chat
Do this before creating credentials or editing files. Stunlock Studios’ PC support article, published November 26, 2024, states that voice chat is available on Official V Rising servers and private servers hosted on PocketHost. That is the clearest official scope statement. A dedicated server on another provider may still support Vivox, but support depends on the host’s control panel, file access, network configuration, and the V Rising build it runs. Ask the host specifically whether it supports the Vivox server configuration described below.
The instructions in Stunlock’s dedicated-server repository are labeled for V Rising dedicated server version 1.0.x on PC. File names and paths can change between builds, so check the current server documentation if your installation uses a different version. Do not overwrite shipped defaults when the server offers a local override folder; local overrides are easier to preserve during updates.
- A PC V Rising server build that supports the Vivox configuration.
- Permission to edit the server’s persistent-data
Settingsdirectory. - A Unity Gaming Services account and project.
- A full server restart after creating or changing the configuration.
- Players with the current V Rising PC client and access to the in-game sound options.
There is no separate in-game purchase described for creating the Unity Gaming Services project. The account and project setup is free; your normal server or hosting charges, if any, are separate and depend on where you run the V Rising instance. Do not assume that paying for a host automatically includes Vivox configuration or support.

What V Rising proximity voice chat does
V Rising uses Vivox, Unity’s voice and text chat service, for proximity audio. Players hear one another based on in-game distance rather than through a global party channel. The configuration defines a conversational range, an outer audible range, and how quickly volume fades while players move apart.
The server-side settings do not automatically turn the feature on for every client. The server must load valid Vivox credentials and have voice enabled, and each player must opt in from the game client. A missing client toggle can therefore look like a server failure even when the server configuration is correct.
Voice behavior is spatial: a player inside the conversational range should sound normal, while a player farther away but still inside the audible range should sound progressively quieter. Outside the audible range, the voice should no longer be heard. This is different from a global Discord-style channel and is why testing players need to move around in the game world.
Create the Unity Gaming Services Vivox project
The Unity Gaming Services setup is free to create. Use the same project for the server whose credentials you are configuring; credentials from another project will not authenticate this server.
- Sign up for or sign in to a Unity Gaming Services account.
- Create a new project in the Unity Gaming Services dashboard.
- Open the project’s Services area.
- Choose Vivox Voice and Text Chat.
- When the setup guide asks for an integration, select Unity and complete the activation steps.
- Open Voice and Text Chat > Credentials. Leave this page available while you create the server file; you will copy four values from it.
The four dashboard labels do not match the four V Rising JSON keys word for word. Use the mapping below exactly.

Treat the token key as a secret. Do not paste it into public configuration examples, issue trackers, screenshots, or chat. If it is exposed, rotate it in Unity Gaming Services and update the server file.
Why the mapping matters
Each value has a different role, so swapping two fields can produce a silent failure even when the JSON parses correctly. The token issuer is not the endpoint, and the domain is not the secret. Copy the labels from the credentials page one at a time, then verify that the four V Rising names match the table before saving.
Create ServerVoipSettings.json
Create a plain-text file named exactly ServerVoipSettings.json. Capitalization matters, and the file must end in .json, not .json.txt. Replace the credential placeholders with the values from your Unity Gaming Services project.

Required and compatibility fields

Validate the endpoint
The documented endpoint format is https://unity.vivox.com/appconfig/your-token-issuer, with your actual token issuer replacing the final segment. Copy the Server value from the credentials page rather than manually reconstructing it. A syntactically plausible URL with the wrong issuer can produce the same symptoms as an invalid secret.

Before uploading, check that the opening and closing braces are present, every property name is quoted, and the file contains no comments or smart quotation marks. A JSON validator can catch syntax errors, but it cannot tell whether a credential belongs to the correct project, so perform both checks.
Put the file in the active server Settings folder
Place ServerVoipSettings.json in the server’s persistent-data Settings directory. A commonly used path is:
save-dataSettingsServerVoipSettings.jsonIf your launch configuration sets a different persistentDataPath, use that location’s Settings subfolder instead. The important point is that the file belongs under the active persistent-data path, not beside an untouched copy of the shipped server files.
- Stop the V Rising server completely. Editing while the process is running can leave an old configuration in memory.
- Open the persistent-data directory used by this server instance.
- Open or create its
Settingssubfolder. - Copy
ServerVoipSettings.jsoninto that folder. - Start the server and wait for it to finish loading before testing.
Managed hosts may expose this folder through a file manager, an advanced-configuration editor, or not at all. If you cannot access the persistent-data Settings folder, ask the host whether it provides a supported Vivox setting or whether voice chat is available on your plan and current V Rising version.

Multiple installations can have similarly named save directories. Confirm the path belongs to the instance you actually launch, especially after migrating from a local machine to a hosted server. Copying the file into an old backup or an inactive installation has no effect.
Have every player enable voice chat
Server activation is only half of the setup. Each player must enable the client option on their own account and device.

- Launch V Rising and enter the server.
- Open Options.
- Select Sound.
- Turn on Use Voice Chat. Some hosting instructions call the same control Proximity Voice chat.
- Apply the setting and return to the game.
If one player can hear others but another cannot, compare the client settings first. The server cannot force a player who has disabled the option to transmit or receive proximity audio. The affected player should also verify the selected microphone and the operating system’s microphone permission before changing server credentials.
Adjust conversational and audible distance
Conversational distance
VOIPConversationalDistance controls the range in which nearby players can communicate normally. The example value is 14. Lowering it makes conversations more local; increasing it lets players communicate across a larger area.

VOIPAudibleDistance defines the outer range at which a voice can still be heard. The example value is 40. It should normally be greater than the conversational distance so that voices fade out rather than stop abruptly.
Fade intensity
VOIPFadeIntensity controls how strongly volume falls between the conversational and audible ranges. The example value is 2.0. Make one change at a time, restart the server, and test with two players at known distances so you can tell which setting changed the result.
These values affect proximity behavior, not the microphone level on a player’s computer. Players should adjust their operating-system input level and in-game volume separately if speech is too quiet or distorted. Keep a copy of the last working values so you can restore them after experimentation.
Test the installation systematically
Use two player accounts, or two people connected through voice-enabled clients, for a meaningful test.

- Have both players enable Use Voice Chat in Options > Sound.
- Stand close together and speak. Both clients should hear the nearby voice.
- Move apart gradually. Volume should decrease as the distance approaches the audible limit.
- Move beyond the audible range. The voice should no longer be heard.
- Repeat after changing one distance or fade value, restarting the server between tests.
If the test fails immediately for everyone, investigate server loading and credentials before changing distance values. If only one person fails, investigate that player’s client option, microphone, and operating-system permissions. Test with players who are genuinely separated in the game world; a menu, loading screen, or disconnected microphone does not test proximity behavior.
Troubleshoot common failures
The voice option is missing or remains disabled
- Check whether the server is Official or a private server hosted on PocketHost, the environments named by Stunlock Studios as supporting voice chat.
- For another host, ask whether the installed V Rising build supports Vivox and whether the host has enabled it.
- Verify that
VOIPEnabledis the JSON booleantrue, not the quoted string"true". - Restart the server after every file or value change.
No one can hear anyone
- Confirm the file name is exactly
ServerVoipSettings.jsonand has not becomeServerVoipSettings.json.txt. - Confirm the file is under the active persistent-data
Settingsfolder, not an inactive installation directory. - Recheck all four mappings: Token issuer to
VOIPIssuer, Token key toVOIPSecret, Domain toVOIPVivoxDomain, and Server toVOIPAPIEndpoint. - Ensure every credential was copied from the same Unity Gaming Services project.
- Check that the JSON is valid and contains no smart quotes, comments, or trailing comma.
One player cannot hear or transmit
- Have that player enable Use Voice Chat or Proximity Voice chat under Options > Sound.
- Check the selected microphone and operating-system microphone permission.
- Confirm the player is close enough for the configured conversational or audible range.
- Test with another player to separate a client problem from a server problem.
Voices cut off too quickly or can be heard too far away
- Adjust
VOIPConversationalDistancefor the normal speaking area. - Adjust
VOIPAudibleDistancefor the outer fade boundary. - Adjust
VOIPFadeIntensityif the transition is too abrupt or too gradual. - Restart and retest after each change; the server does not necessarily reload this file during a running session.
The setup worked until a server update
Confirm that the update still uses the same file name, keys, and persistent-data path. Stunlock’s dedicated-server instructions target version 1.0.x, and a later build may alter defaults or loading behavior. Preserve your custom file separately, then verify it against the current build rather than editing shipped defaults.

The host says the file is present but nothing changes
Ask which persistent-data path the running instance uses and when it was last restarted. Some panels show a template or inactive save directory. Have support confirm that the instance loaded the file after a complete stop-and-start cycle and that its current V Rising version supports the listed keys.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
The technical steps are the same in principle, but control over files and restarts differs. Use this comparison before choosing where to run the server.

Managed hosting is easier only when the provider exposes the required file or an equivalent supported setting. If it does not, a new Vivox project alone cannot make voice work because the server still needs to load the credentials. Confirm feature availability and the provider’s current V Rising version before moving an established world.

- Keep
VOIPSecretout of public repositories and screenshots. - Limit access to the server’s Settings folder to administrators who need it.
- Back up the JSON file before changing the V Rising version or moving hosts.
- After a migration, verify the new instance’s persistent-data path; copying the file into the old machine’s folder has no effect.
- When rotating credentials, stop the server, replace the values, and restart so no process continues using the old secret.
- Document which Unity Gaming Services project belongs to which server, especially when operating multiple worlds.
Keep the backup outside any publicly served web directory and label it with the server and build it was tested against. If several worlds use separate projects, never assume that a credential copied from one world can be reused for another.
Final verification checklist
- The host and current V Rising build support Vivox voice chat.
- Vivox Voice and Text Chat is activated in the Unity Gaming Services project.
- Token issuer, token key, domain, and server are mapped to the correct JSON keys.
VOIPEnabledistrue.ServerVoipSettings.jsonis valid JSON and is in the active persistent-dataSettingsfolder.- The server was fully restarted after the file was installed or edited.
- Every player enabled Use Voice Chat in Options > Sound.
- Two players tested both close-range speech and the fade-out at distance.
Once those checks pass, V Rising’s Vivox proximity chat should operate according to the conversational, audible, and fade settings in your file. If it still fails, the host’s support status and the server build are the next things to verify—not additional client-side toggles.

Is V Rising voice chat enabled by default?
No. The server needs a valid ServerVoipSettings.json with VOIPEnabled set to true, and every player must enable Use Voice Chat under Options > Sound.
Where do I put ServerVoipSettings.json?
Put it in the active persistent-data Settings folder, commonly save-dataSettingsServerVoipSettings.json. If the server uses a different persistentDataPath, use that path’s Settings subfolder.
What credentials does V Rising need from Vivox?

Do I put my Unity email or password in VOIPAppUserId or VOIPAppUserPwd?
No. In the documented configuration, both fields stay the literal value notneeded-notused. They are not your Unity account credentials.
Why is the voice-chat option still disabled?
First verify that the server is Official or a supported PocketHost private server, or confirm with another host that its current V Rising build supports Vivox. Then check VOIPEnabled, the active Settings path, and a full server restart.
Can I use any Vivox project for my server?
Use the Unity Gaming Services project whose four credentials you entered in the file. Mixing values from different projects can prevent authentication even when each value looks valid.
How do I make voices carry farther?
Increase VOIPConversationalDistance for normal conversation range and VOIPAudibleDistance for the outer hearing limit. Keep the audible value greater than the conversational value, restart, and test after each change.
Does changing the JSON file require a restart?
Yes. Stop and start the server after creating or editing the file; a running process may continue using the old configuration.

Not according to the official scope statement. Stunlock Studios specifically names Official servers and private servers hosted on PocketHost. Other hosts should confirm support for their control panel and installed V Rising version.
