To encrypt a virtual machine in vCenter, first connect vCenter Server to an installed, trusted key provider. Then assign an encryption storage policy to the VM. The policy determines whether vSphere encrypts the VM Home files, the virtual disks, or both.
If Encrypt VM is disabled in vCenter 8.0, check the key-provider connection before changing the VM. If the control is not displayed at all, also check that your role has the required cryptographic-operation and storage-policy privileges.
What VMware vSphere VM encryption protects
vSphere VM encryption is a virtualization-layer control. vCenter and the ESXi hosts use a key provider to obtain and manage keys, while a storage policy tells vSphere which virtual-machine objects must be encrypted. This protects data in the VM files and virtual disks as they are stored and handled by the vSphere environment.
It is not the same as configuring encryption inside the guest operating system. Enabling vSphere encryption does not automatically turn on BitLocker, Linux block-device encryption, a database’s transparent data encryption, or any other guest-level feature. If your threat model includes data after it is presented to the guest, you may need guest encryption as a separate control.

The practical sequence is therefore:
- Prepare a supported key provider and make it trusted by vCenter Server.
- Confirm that the provider reports a healthy connection.
- Use an encryption-capable storage policy for the VM objects you want to protect.
- Back up the provider and vCenter data, then test recovery and portability.
Prerequisites and design decisions
vCenter Server and an active key provider
Broadcom’s guidance requires vCenter Server to be connected to a key provider before vSphere Virtual Machine Encryption can perform encryption operations. The provider must be installed in the environment, configured according to its vendor’s instructions, and trusted by vCenter. A provider that is merely configured on a network but is not connected and healthy in vCenter will not make encryption available.
Choose who operates the key service
You can use a Standard Key Provider, which connects vSphere to an external key-management server, or VMware’s Native Key Provider, which is managed by vCenter. The choice changes the operational work you must own.
| Decision point | Standard Key Provider | Native Key Provider |
|---|---|---|
| Where key service runs | On an external key server (KMS) that is compatible with the vSphere release. | Managed by vCenter rather than a separate external KMS. |
| Initial setup | Requires the KMS name, address, port, optional vendor-supported connection details, certificate trust, and provider-side trust configuration. | Uses VMware’s native provider workflow; exact screens can vary by vCenter release. |
| Backup responsibility | Follow the external provider’s key-backup and recovery procedures in addition to protecting vCenter backups. | Back up the Native Key Provider before using it, and secure the exported provider backup and vCenter backup data. |
| Migration and disaster recovery | The destination must have access to the relevant provider and keys. | The same Native Key Provider must be configured at both ends for cross-vCenter encrypted workload migration. |
| Infrastructure dependency | Depends on the external KMS and its network, certificate, and availability design. | Depends on a vSphere cluster object. VMware states that a single host can be placed in a one-host cluster object when necessary. |
The available guidance does not establish a universal performance or cost difference between these choices. Select a provider that is supported for your vSphere version and that your operations team can back up, monitor, and make available at every recovery or migration destination.

The account performing the work needs permissions for cryptographic operations and storage-policy changes. A user can have access to a VM and still be unable to encrypt it if the role omits one of these privilege groups. Use a least-privilege role designed for encryption administration, and record who can export or restore key-provider backups.
Connect a Standard Key Provider to vCenter
The following sequence reflects the vSphere 8 Standard Key Provider overview. Vendor-specific fields and trust steps can differ, so use the KMS provider’s supported settings for your implementation.
- Prepare the KMS. Install or provision a key server that is compatible with the deployed vSphere version. Record its configured name, network address, listening port, and any optional connection values required by the vendor.
- Open the provider view. In the vSphere Client, select the vCenter Server object, then open Configure > Key Providers.
- Add the provider. Choose the command to add a key provider and select the Standard Key Provider option when the interface presents provider types.
- Enter connection details. Supply the KMS name, address, and port. Enter optional connection details only when they are supported and required by the provider.
- Accept the trust certificate. Review the certificate presented by the provider and accept it only after verifying that it belongs to the intended KMS. Certificate trust is a security decision, not a formality.
- Complete provider-side trust. Many KMS products require a reciprocal trust or client-registration step. Complete that step in the KMS administration interface using the vCenter identity and certificate information required by the vendor.
- Check the status. Return to the Key Providers view and verify that the provider’s connection status is Normal. Do not proceed to VM encryption while the provider is disconnected, untrusted, or reporting an error.
If the provider does not reach Normal status, stop and correct DNS, routing, firewall rules, certificate trust, time synchronization, credentials, or the KMS-side registration before touching VM storage policies. Repeatedly retrying an encryption operation cannot repair a provider-connection problem.

Prepare a Native Key Provider safely
A Native Key Provider removes the requirement to operate a separate external KMS, but it does not remove the need for key-management discipline. VMware’s Native Key Provider guidance says to back up the provider before using it. Treat that backup as a recovery secret: restrict access, encrypt it while stored and transferred, keep protected copies in separate failure domains, and document who can restore it.
The provider also depends on a vSphere cluster object. If your installation has only one ESXi host, VMware says that host can be placed in a one-host cluster object to satisfy this dependency. That arrangement does not create host redundancy; it only supplies the required vSphere inventory structure.
Exact Native Key Provider creation screens and labels can change between vCenter updates. Before following a screen-by-screen runbook, verify the menu names and required fields in the documentation for the exact vCenter release you operate. The non-negotiable controls are to create the provider, establish trust, export and secure its backup, and verify that vCenter reports it as usable before assigning an encryption policy.
Apply an encryption storage policy to an existing VM
After a provider is healthy, the storage policy determines the encryption scope. The vSphere Client presents policy assignments for the VM Home object and for individual virtual disks. Labels and placement can vary by release, so use the policy-assignment controls in your deployed vCenter version rather than relying on an older screenshot.
- Select the target virtual machine and open its configuration or storage-policy editing view.
- Locate the policy assignment for VM Home and the assignments for each virtual disk.
- Choose an encryption storage policy for the objects that must be encrypted.
- Review the resulting task and any warning about power state, key use, or storage placement.
- Submit the change and wait for the reconfiguration or migration task to complete.
- Reopen the VM’s storage-policy assignments and verify that the intended objects show the encryption policy.
Encrypt VM Home and all virtual disks
Assign the encryption policy to VM Home and to every virtual disk attached to the VM. This covers the VM’s configuration files and disk objects under vSphere-managed encryption. Check every disk, including disks added after the initial deployment; a later disk can otherwise remain governed by a non-encrypting policy.
Encrypt VM Home only
Assign the encryption policy to VM Home, then assign another policy to each virtual disk, such as Datastore Default when that is the policy selected in your environment. This protects the VM Home files while leaving disk encryption under each disk’s own policy. Use this design only when the distinction is intentional and documented, because it creates different protection states within one VM.

New VMs and future disks
For a new VM, select the intended encryption-capable policy during placement instead of waiting for a later conversion. When adding a disk to an existing VM, inspect its policy assignment immediately. VM encryption is an object-by-object decision, so a VM that was encrypted at creation can still acquire an unencrypted disk if the added disk receives a different policy.
Verify that encryption is actually in effect
Do not treat a successful click as proof of protection. Verification should cover the provider, the policy, and the completed task.
- Confirm the key provider remains connected and reports Normal.
- Confirm VM Home has the intended encryption policy.
- Confirm every virtual disk that should be protected has that policy, including recently added disks.
- Review Recent Tasks or the equivalent task history for a completed operation rather than a failed or canceled task.
- Record the VM, policy, provider, date, operator, and any power-state requirement in your change record.
Keep this evidence with your backup and recovery documentation. It allows another administrator to determine which provider and policy a VM needs without relying on memory during an incident.

Back up keys and plan recovery before production use
Key material is part of the data required to start and recover an encrypted VM. Back up a Native Key Provider before using it, and protect both the exported provider backup and vCenter backup data. For an external provider, follow that provider’s documented key-backup process; a vCenter backup alone is not a substitute for the KMS’s key data.
Use a recovery procedure that answers all of these questions:
- Where is the protected provider backup stored?
- Who is authorized to retrieve and restore it?
- Which vCenter instance and version can import or use it?
- Which certificates, credentials, DNS records, and network paths are needed to reconnect the provider?
- How will you validate that an encrypted VM can power on after restoration?
Test the procedure before an outage. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan. Keep at least one recovery copy outside the primary vCenter and storage failure domain, while preserving the access controls that protect the key material.

Migration, cloning, and disaster-recovery implications
An encrypted VM carries a dependency on its key provider. VMware states that an encrypted VM at a destination needs the relevant provider configured there. Before moving a workload to another vCenter, host group, site, or disaster-recovery environment, confirm that the destination can reach the provider and obtain the keys required by the VM.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For cross-vCenter migration of workloads encrypted with a Native Key Provider, the same Native Key Provider must be configured at both ends. “Same” means the destination has the corresponding provider and key material, not merely a provider with a similar name. Plan and test the destination configuration before scheduling the migration.
If the destination lacks the required provider, a powered-off encrypted VM may not be able to start. This can turn an apparently successful file transfer or inventory registration into an outage at the moment of recovery. Include provider readiness as a migration gate, alongside compute, network, datastore, and licensing checks.
Understand shallow and deep rekey operations
Rekeying changes how encryption keys protect the VM, but the two rekey types have different impact and power-state requirements.
| Rekey type | What changes | Power state | Operational meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shallow rekey | The key-encryption key (KEK/KDK) used to wrap the VM’s data-encryption key changes. | Can occur while the VM is running. | Changes the wrapping key without replacing the VM’s underlying data-encryption key. |
| Deep rekey | The data-encryption key (DEK) itself changes. | The VM must be powered off. | Requires a maintenance window and a plan for the additional operation on the VM’s encrypted data. |
Use shallow rekey when your policy requires replacement of the wrapping key without downtime and the provider supports the operation. Schedule deep rekey as a controlled maintenance task, confirm the provider is healthy first, and verify the VM after it powers back on.
Troubleshoot a disabled or missing Encrypt VM control
The Encrypt VM toggle is greyed out in vCenter 8.0
An inactive or absent key provider is the first condition to check. Open the vCenter Server’s key-provider configuration, confirm that the intended provider is present, trusted, and reporting Normal, then retry the operation. If the provider is not healthy, resolve its connection and trust errors rather than changing the VM repeatedly.

The control is missing entirely
A missing control can indicate a permissions problem. Check that the account’s role includes privileges for cryptographic operations and storage-policy management. Compare the role with a known working administrative role in a controlled manner, and avoid granting broad administrator rights permanently just to test one missing command.
The provider is present but encryption still fails
- Verify that the VM’s selected policy is an encryption policy and is compatible with the target storage.
- Check each object separately: VM Home and every virtual disk can have different policy assignments.
- Review the task error for a provider, certificate, trust, or key-availability message.
- Confirm the VM’s destination host or vCenter can reach the provider.
- Check whether the requested operation requires the VM to be powered off, as with a deep rekey.
- Validate that the account has both cryptographic-operation and storage-policy privileges.
An encrypted VM will not start after a move or restore
Check provider availability at the destination first. VMware’s guidance makes key-provider availability a prerequisite for using an encrypted VM there. Restore or reconnect the corresponding provider and key material, then retry the power-on operation. Do not delete or recreate encrypted VM files while investigating; doing so can complicate recovery.
Operational checklist for administrators
- Confirm the vCenter and ESXi versions support the provider and encryption workflow you selected.
- Document the provider owner, endpoint, certificates, and escalation path.
- Verify a Normal provider status before assigning policies.
- Back up the Native Key Provider before first use, or follow the external KMS backup procedure.
- Secure provider and vCenter backups with separate access controls and protected copies.
- Define whether each VM requires VM Home encryption, disk encryption, or both.
- Review policy assignments whenever disks are added, detached, or moved.
- Test a restore and a destination power-on before declaring the design recoverable.
- For cross-vCenter movement, configure and test the destination provider before migration.
- Record whether a rekey is shallow or deep and schedule downtime for deep rekeys.
Limits and planning considerations
vSphere encryption protects objects managed through vSphere’s key-provider and storage-policy mechanisms. It does not establish guest operating-system encryption, application-level encryption, or a complete backup strategy by itself. It also does not make encrypted workloads portable without their keys.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProvider choice has continuing operational consequences: external KMS deployments require vendor-specific compatibility and trust administration, while Native Key Provider deployments require secure provider backup and careful handling of the vCenter-dependent recovery path. Neither option should be evaluated on an invented universal cost or performance number; the available VMware and Broadcom guidance does not provide a quantified comparison.
Finally, vSphere Client labels and workflows can change in product updates. Use the exact release documentation for highly granular Native Key Provider and storage-policy creation instructions, while preserving the invariant workflow: trusted provider first, policy assignment second, backup and recovery validation throughout.
