You cannot enable USB4 with one universal BIOS switch. First confirm that the computer’s specific USB-C port, cable, peripheral, and any dock support USB4. Then use the manufacturer’s manual for that exact model and firmware version to find a documented USB4, Thunderbolt, Type-C mode, or host-controller setting. Save the change, perform a full reboot, and use Windows 11’s USB4 Hubs and Devices page to confirm detection. Finally, test a compatible device directly and treat the result as end-to-end throughput—not proof of a single raw link rate.
What USB4 support actually depends on
USB4 is a capability of a complete connection, not a property of the connector’s shape. A USB-C socket can carry ordinary USB data, display output, charging, Thunderbolt features, USB4, or a combination of those functions. The host controller in the computer, the firmware configuration, the peripheral, the cable, and any dock or hub must all support the feature you want to use.
Microsoft lists an unsupported host port, cable, or dock among the common reasons for limited USB4 functionality. A cable cannot add USB4 to a host that does not implement it, and a USB4 computer can still fall back to a lower capability when the attached device or cable has a lower rating.

Read the computer or motherboard specifications and the port diagram in its manual. Do not infer USB4 support from a USB-C-shaped opening, a charging symbol, or the presence of DisplayPort output. Some systems have several USB-C ports with different controllers and capabilities. Record the physical port you intend to test before changing firmware settings.

- Peripheral: The drive, dock, monitor, or other device must explicitly support the USB4 capability you need.
- Cable: Use a USB4-certified cable rated for the intended capability. A cable designed only for basic USB-C data can limit an otherwise capable system.
- Intervening hardware: A dock, adapter, hub, or monitor can change the negotiated connection or omit USB4 features. Start with a direct connection while troubleshooting.
How to find the right BIOS setting
There is no honest one-size-fits-all BIOS path or key sequence. Menu names, locations, defaults, and even the existence of a setting vary by manufacturer, motherboard, processor platform, and firmware release. Changing an unrelated option can disable other Type-C functions or expose security-sensitive tunneling features.
- Identify the exact computer or motherboard model and current BIOS/UEFI version. A product family name is not enough; revisions can expose different menus.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page and download the BIOS/UEFI setup manual for that model and firmware family. Prefer the manual over generic forum instructions.
- Search the manual for USB4, Thunderbolt, TBT, Type-C mode, host router, and PCIe tunneling.
- Match the documented option to the physical port and controller you are testing. Do not enable every setting that happens to contain the words PCIe tunneling.
- Write down the original value or photograph the page so you can restore it if another device stops working.
- Change only the documented controller-enable or USB4-mode option, save the BIOS changes, and perform a complete reboot into Windows.
Settings you may encounter
| Setting label | What it may control | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated Thunderbolt Enable | Turns an integrated Thunderbolt/USB4 controller on or off and may reveal dependent settings. | Use only when the manual ties it to the port being tested. |
| USB4 Mode | Selects USB4 operation for a processor or Type-C controller that supports multiple modes. | Choose it only when the model manual documents USB4 for that connector. |
| CPU Type-C Mode | Selects the operating mode of a CPU-connected Type-C port. | Do not assume that every Type-C choice provides USB4; read the descriptions. |
| PCIE Tunneling over USB4 | Controls PCIe traffic tunneled through USB4, often separately from basic USB data. | It is not a universal USB4 on/off switch. Firmware may restrict it for security or policy reasons. |
| Security or authorization options | Can govern peripheral approval or access to tunneled PCIe resources. | Follow the manufacturer’s security guidance; do not lower protections merely to chase a benchmark. |
ASUS manual examples, not universal instructions
ASUS ROG Z890 Series BIOS documentation shows an Integrated Thunderbolt(TM) Enable control; related options appear only after that controller is enabled. A separate ASUS Intel 800 Series BIOS manual documents PCIE Tunneling over USB4 and a CPU TypeC Mode choice that includes USB4 Mode. These examples demonstrate why model-specific documentation matters. They are not directions for every ASUS board or for computers from other manufacturers.
Why a full reboot matters
Microsoft’s USB4 ACPI requirements state that a full reboot is required when firmware settings affecting native USB4 support are changed. Do not rely on closing the BIOS screen, signing out, or using a sleep-and-wake cycle as a substitute. Choose the BIOS option to save and exit, let the operating system shut down or restart normally, and then boot Windows again. If the manufacturer’s instructions call for a power-off cycle, follow those instructions as well.

Verify USB4 detection in Windows 11
Windows 11 provides a direct software check for a USB4 host router. Microsoft documents the USB4 settings page for Windows 11 build 22621.1778 (KB5026446) and later.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select USB.
- Open USB4 Hubs and Devices.
The page is enabled when Windows detects a USB4 host router. It lists attached USB4 hubs and devices and the capabilities Windows can read from them. This confirms host-router detection; it does not display a universal numeric “full-speed” result and does not prove that a storage workload is reaching the link’s maximum.
If the USB4 page is missing
Absence of the page is not conclusive on every system. Some host routers are enumerated only when a USB4 hub or device is connected. Attach a known USB4 peripheral directly to the suspected port, restart Windows if the manual requires it, and check the page again.

What “full speed” means for USB4
USB4 does not provide one universal application speed. The link negotiates its capacity, and USB data, PCIe traffic, and DisplayPort traffic can share that capacity. Allocation policies, the active devices, and the platform’s implementation affect what remains available to a particular transfer.
Microsoft’s design documentation gives an engineering example in which up to 90% of link bandwidth may be allocated for USB 3.x isochronous, PCIe, and DisplayPort traffic under the described policy. That figure is a capacity-allocation example, not a promise that a file copy will reach 90% of a marketed link rate. The same documentation’s example rates illustrate calculations; they are not expected consumer transfer speeds.
Keep three different checks separate
| Check | What it tells you | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| USB4 Hubs and Devices page | Windows detected a USB4 host router and can enumerate attached USB4 devices. | The negotiated link rate or storage throughput. |
| Negotiated link information, if the platform exposes it | The connection’s current capability under that platform’s reporting method. | A sustained application result for every workload. |
| File copy or storage benchmark | End-to-end performance through the host, cable, device controller, media, drivers, and current system load. | The raw USB4 link rate or proof that BIOS is the only limiting factor. |
How to run a useful practical speed test
Use a test setup that removes avoidable variables and record the conditions. A USB4-capable NVMe enclosure or external SSD is a suitable endpoint when its specifications clearly state the supported USB4 capability.
- Connect the storage device directly to the computer’s documented USB4 port. Bypass a dock, monitor, front-panel extension, and hub for the first test.
- Use a USB4-certified cable rated for both the computer port and the enclosure. Replace the cable if its rating is unknown.
- Confirm that the enclosure and the installed SSD have performance specifications appropriate for the test. The slowest component can determine the result.
- Close transfers, virtual machines, backup jobs, and other high-bandwidth applications. Disconnect or pause displays and peripherals that share the same USB4 path where practical.
- Run a large sustained transfer or a storage benchmark that reports its test size and workload. A tiny file copy is dominated by file-system and latency effects.
- Repeat the test at least once after the device has reached normal operating temperature. Note thermal throttling, power-management changes, and whether the result falls during a long run.
- Record the host model and BIOS version, exact port, Windows build, cable, enclosure, SSD, benchmark settings, and competing traffic. Report the result as the throughput of that complete setup.
A lower-than-expected result does not automatically indicate a disabled BIOS option. The drive controller, enclosure firmware, NAND state, file system, thermal condition, CPU load, and other traffic can all reduce throughput. Conversely, a short burst that looks fast does not establish sustained performance.

Troubleshoot in a controlled order
Change one variable at a time so that a successful result identifies the cause rather than merely hiding it.
| Symptom | Next action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The port looks like USB-C but USB4 is undocumented. | Check the exact model specification and port diagram. | Connector shape alone does not establish USB4 capability. |
| The device works through a dock but the USB4 page is absent. | Connect the USB4 device directly to the host port. | The dock or its cable may omit or limit USB4 features. |
| The USB4 page does not appear with nothing attached. | Attach a known USB4 hub or device and check again. | Some host routers enumerate dynamically. |
| The manufacturer manual lists a controller as disabled. | Enable only that documented controller or USB4 mode, save, and fully reboot. | Firmware changes require a complete restart to take effect. |
| Windows detects USB4 but the transfer is slow. | Test the direct port, cable, peripheral, workload, temperature, and competing traffic separately. | Detection and application throughput are different measurements. |
| PCIe-tunneled hardware does not appear. | Review the platform’s security and PCIe-tunneling policy in its manual. | PCIe tunneling can be restricted independently of basic USB data. |
1. Recheck the physical connection
Unplug the device, inspect both connectors, and reconnect firmly to the documented port. Eliminate adapters and extension cables. If the device has its own power supply, use the specified supply rather than assuming the host port can provide all required power.
2. Substitute a known-good cable or peripheral
Keep the host and port fixed while changing only the cable. Then keep the cable fixed while changing only the peripheral. This isolates a cable or device limitation from a firmware limitation. A lower-capability device can work perfectly while never negotiating the capability you expected.

3. Check firmware and drivers from the computer maker
Review the manufacturer’s BIOS release notes and driver package for USB4, Thunderbolt, Type-C, chipset, or controller changes. Apply updates using the maker’s procedure and power requirements. Do not install firmware intended for a different board revision.

4. Remove shared bandwidth
Temporarily disconnect high-resolution displays, other external drives, and active docks. USB4 capacity is shared, so a display stream or another transfer can reduce what is available to the test device even when the host router is functioning correctly.
Security and recovery considerations
USB4 can carry tunneled PCIe traffic, which gives some peripherals deeper access than ordinary USB data. Microsoft describes PCIe tunneling as a feature firmware may restrict for security or policy reasons. Enabling a security-related option without understanding the manufacturer’s guidance can change the computer’s protection model.
- Keep the firmware’s documented security level unless a specific device requirement justifies a change.
- Use the manual’s default or recommended authorization mode for unfamiliar Thunderbolt or USB4 peripherals.
- Record every change before leaving BIOS so you can undo it.
- If a device becomes unstable after enabling a setting, restore the prior value, perform a full reboot, and retest with the direct connection.
A concise verification checklist
- The exact host port is identified as USB4-capable by the computer or motherboard documentation.
- The computer’s firmware manual names a relevant controller or USB4 mode setting, if one is required.
- The peripheral, cable, and any dock support the intended USB4 capability.
- The documented BIOS change was saved and followed by a full reboot.
- Windows 11 is at least build 22621.1778 (KB5026446) when using the USB4 settings page.
- Settings > Bluetooth & devices > USB > USB4 Hubs and Devices shows a host router when a compatible device is attached.
- Any speed test uses a direct connection, a correctly rated cable, a capable endpoint, and a recorded workload.
- The result is labeled as end-to-end throughput, with shared displays and other traffic disclosed.
Common questions
Can I enable USB4 if my computer only lists USB-C?
Only if the manufacturer’s specifications and firmware documentation identify that particular USB-C port as USB4-capable. A BIOS switch cannot add a missing USB4 controller or retimer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does the USB4 Hubs and Devices page show my maximum gigabits per second?
No. It confirms host-router detection and lists capabilities Windows exposes, but it is not a universal negotiated-link or file-transfer speed meter.
Why is my USB4 drive slower when a monitor is connected?
DisplayPort and storage traffic can share USB4 link capacity. The allocation available to the drive can therefore change when another high-bandwidth device is active.
Should I turn on every PCIe-tunneling option?
No. PCIe tunneling is distinct from basic USB data and can be restricted for security. Enable it only when the exact computer manual documents the option and your device requires it.
