Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) separately for every gaming account you use. Xbox uses your Microsoft account’s security settings, while PlayStation, Nintendo, Steam, and Epic Games each have their own controls. Choose an authenticator app, email, or SMS where available, complete the confirmation step, and save every backup or recovery option before signing out.
What gaming-account 2FA protects
Two-factor authentication adds a second identity check after your password. Depending on the service, that check may be a time-based code in an authenticator app, a number-match prompt, an email code, an SMS code, or a passkey-supported confirmation. A stolen password alone should not be enough to sign in from an unfamiliar device.
2FA is enabled at the account level, not as one universal console switch. If you play on several services, activate it on each account. An Xbox console uses the Microsoft account connected to it; enabling Microsoft account two-step verification does not automatically protect a separate Steam, Epic Games, Nintendo, or PlayStation account.
The menus below reflect the English-language support pages available on October 13, 2026. Names and availability can differ by region, account, device generation, or later interface changes.

Prepare before switching 2FA on
- Identify every sign-in identity. List your PlayStation Network, Microsoft/Xbox, Nintendo Account, Steam, Epic Games, and any other gaming accounts you actually use.
- Secure the recovery email first. Anyone who controls that inbox may be able to reset the gaming account or receive verification codes.
- Have an accessible method ready. Install an authenticator app on a phone you control, or confirm that your email address and phone number can receive codes.
- Stay signed in while setting up. Many services display a QR code, secret, backup codes, or confirmation prompt only during the setup session.
- Save recovery information immediately. Store backup codes in a password manager or another secure location that remains available if your phone is lost.
- Use only official settings. Open the service’s website or the account settings on your console instead of following an unsolicited setup link in an email, chat, or direct message.
PlayStation Network: PS5 and PS4 2-step verification
PlayStation labels the feature “2-Step Verification.” The documented setup supports an authenticator app or text message. Sony also mentions passkeys as another sign-in approach, but the 2-step-verification setup flow specifically asks you to configure an authenticator app or SMS.
Set it up from Account Management
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open Security.
- Find 2-Step Verification Status and choose Edit.
- Select Authenticator App or Text Message.
- Follow the displayed instructions. For an authenticator app, add the account in the app and enter its current code; for SMS, enter the code sent to the registered number.
- Confirm activation and record the displayed Backup Codes. Sony explicitly instructs users to “Record your Backup Codes.”
Set it up on a PS5
- Open Settings.
- Choose Users and Accounts.
- Select Security.
- Open 2-Step Verification and complete the authenticator-app or text-message setup.
Set it up on a PS4
- Open Settings.
- Choose Account Management.
- Select Account Information, then Security.
- Open 2-Step Verification and finish the displayed steps.
Keep the backup codes somewhere you can reach without the usual phone. They are the recovery route to plan for before a device is lost, replaced, or wiped.
Xbox: enable two-step verification on your Microsoft account
Xbox sign-in is tied to a Microsoft account, so the setting is managed on Microsoft’s account-security page rather than through a separate Xbox-wide 2FA switch.
- Sign in to your Microsoft account and open Security.
- Choose Manage how I sign in.
- Under Additional security, find Two-step verification.
- Select Turn on and follow the prompts to add or confirm an email address, phone number, or authenticator app.
- Complete a test sign-in or confirmation code so the account shows that two-step verification is active.
Microsoft says codes can be delivered by email, phone, or an authenticator app when you sign in on a device that is not trusted. It also says SMS is being phased out as an authentication and recovery method for personal Microsoft accounts, so the choices shown on your account may change. Add a method you can still access rather than relying on a phone number that you may soon lose.

Important Xbox 360 exception
Microsoft documents that Xbox 360 cannot use the regular security-code flow. After two-step verification is enabled, an app password may be required for that older console. This limitation should not be generalized to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
Nintendo Account: QR-code setup
Nintendo’s account-level guide starts from Nintendo Account settings and uses a smart-device app to scan a QR code.
- Sign in to your Nintendo Account and open the account’s security or 2-step-verification setup.
- Choose the option to set up 2-Step Verification.
- When Nintendo displays a QR code, scan it with the supported app on your smart device.
- Enter the verification value requested by the setup screen and confirm that the feature is enabled.
If passkey authentication is already enabled, Nintendo notes that a passkey can be used to confirm your identity during setup. Follow the current prompts shown for your account; the exact choices can depend on the device and security methods already registered.

Steam: turn on Steam Guard
Steam calls its second layer Steam Guard. Steam describes it as an additional level of security and uses it when a login comes from an unrecognized computer. Depending on your account settings, the code is delivered to your contact email or through the Steam Mobile app.

- Open the Steam account-security settings while signed in.
- Find the Steam Guard section and choose the option to enable it.
- Select the available delivery method, such as contact email or Steam Mobile.
- Complete the code or mobile confirmation step.
- Try a sign-in from a device you recognize and verify that Steam requests the expected additional authorization when appropriate.
If you suspect the Steam account is compromised
Do not stop at changing the password. Open Authorized Devices, use Sign out everywhere for unfamiliar or suspicious sessions, change the password, and review the account’s email address and associated accounts. This removes access that may remain active even after a password change.
Epic Games and Fortnite: enable 2FA
Fortnite uses the security settings of the Epic Games account. Epic offers four methods: Epic Authenticator, a third-party authenticator app, email code, and SMS.
- Sign in to your Epic Games account.
- Open Password and security.
- Find Two-Factor Authentication and choose Set up beside your preferred method.
- Enter the code or approve the number-match prompt requested by the selected method.
- Complete the confirmation step and verify that the account reports 2FA as active. Epic’s documented flow includes a confirmation email.
How Epic’s methods differ
- Epic Authenticator: number-match prompts appear in the Epic Games app or Epic Games Store app.
- Third-party authenticator app: the app generates a changing sign-in code on a device you control.
- Email authentication: Epic sends a code to the account’s recovery or contact inbox.
- SMS authentication: Epic sends a code to a registered phone number. Some regional phone numbers are not supported; choose another method if Epic reports that limitation.
If you enable more than one method, Epic lets you designate a preferred primary method. Keep a second usable method only if you can maintain access to it and understand how it will be used during recovery.

Choose the right verification method

Use an authenticator app when you control a reliable device and want a method that does not depend on a phone number or email delivery. Email can be practical if the inbox is strongly protected. SMS is better than a password alone but should not be your only recovery plan where an app, passkey, or backup codes are available.
Protect linked accounts and recovery channels
A strong gaming-account password and 2FA can still be bypassed through another account that is linked for sign-in. Epic specifically states that linked Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Facebook, and Google accounts can be used to access the Epic account. Enable 2FA or an equivalent security control on each linked account and protect the email address used for recovery.
- Use a unique password for every gaming and email account. Epic recommends considering a password manager for creating and storing unique passwords; it is optional, not a requirement for enabling 2FA.
- Review the recovery email and phone number after setup. Remove old numbers and addresses you no longer control.
- Do not approve an unexpected mobile prompt. A number-match request you did not initiate may indicate that someone has your password.
- Keep backup codes private. Treat them like passwords and do not store them in a public screenshot, shared chat, or unprotected notes app.
- Check active sessions or authorized devices after any suspected compromise, especially on Steam.
Recovery and troubleshooting
You lost the phone that generated codes
Use the service’s backup code or another already-enrolled method. For PlayStation, use the backup codes recorded during activation. If no recovery method remains, start the provider’s official account-recovery process; do not disable security through an unofficial support link.

The SMS code never arrives
- Confirm that the number and country or region are correct in account settings.
- Check whether the service supports your region. Epic explicitly notes that some regional phone numbers cannot be used for SMS.
- Wait for the newest code and enter only that code; repeated requests can invalidate earlier messages.
- Switch to an authenticator app or email if the service offers it.
- For Microsoft personal accounts, remember that SMS availability is being phased out and may not appear as an option.
The authenticator code is rejected
- Set the phone’s date and time automatically; time-based codes depend on accurate device time.
- Make sure you are using the entry created for the correct gaming account.
- Enter the newest displayed code before it expires.
- Do not delete the authenticator entry until you have successfully signed in and confirmed another recovery route.
You changed your email address or phone number
Update the account’s security and recovery information while you are still signed in, then complete a test sign-in. A method that remains listed but is no longer accessible can turn a routine password reset into a full recovery case.

An older console rejects the code
Check the device generation before assuming 2FA is broken. Microsoft specifically identifies Xbox 360 as unable to use the regular security-code flow; it may require an app password. Do not apply that instruction automatically to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
You receive an unexpected sign-in alert
Deny an unrecognized prompt, change the account password from the official settings, review recovery details, and revoke unfamiliar sessions. On Steam, inspect Authorized Devices and use Sign out everywhere. Also secure the associated email and any linked platform or social account that can sign in to the gaming account.
Final verification checklist
- The account’s security page explicitly says 2FA, 2-step verification, or Steam Guard is active.
- You completed a real confirmation-code or approval step rather than merely opening the setup screen.
- At least one recovery route remains available if your primary phone is lost.
- Backup codes, where supplied, are stored privately and can be reached during an emergency.
- Your recovery email, phone number, linked accounts, and active sessions are current.
- Every gaming account you use has been configured separately; enabling Microsoft security does not secure unrelated services.
There is no required purchase for these settings. The setup uses existing account controls, verification codes, and, where chosen, an authenticator app on a device you already own. The important work is enabling the feature on every relevant identity and preserving a recovery path before you need it.
