Godlike.Host is listed first in this guide’s provider table: its game hosting includes a Pterodactyl-based game panel, SFTP/FTP access, and up to three free backups a day with restore.
Enable the RimWorld Together welcome message by opening the server’s chat settings, setting EnableMoTD to true (some control panels display True), and entering the text in MessageOfTheDay. On a self-managed server, those values are in Config/ChatConfig.json; managed hosts expose the same settings through a Chat configuration page or JSON editor. Save the change, start or restart the server according to the host’s workflow, and have a player reconnect to verify the message.
What the MOTD does
MOTD means “Message of the Day.” In RimWorld Together, it is a welcome message sent to players when they log in to your server. The feature has two separate settings:
EnableMoTDcontrols whether the join message is sent.MessageOfTheDaycontains the message text.
The official RimWorld Together server-configuration documentation identifies ChatConfig.json as the chat settings file and places server configuration files normally in the server’s Config directory. Hosting panels are interfaces for editing those same values, so the key names are the most reliable way to identify the correct setting when labels vary.

Check these details before editing
- Make sure you are changing the RimWorld Together server instance that players actually use. A machine can contain more than one installation or world.
- Record the current file contents or use your host’s backup feature before changing JSON. This gives you a known copy to restore if the editor reports a syntax error.
- Stop a self-managed server before editing. A running process may write its in-memory configuration back to disk and overwrite your change.
- Use the exact capitalization and spelling
EnableMoTDandMessageOfTheDay. They are not interchangeable with similarly worded custom keys.
Enable the MOTD on a self-managed server
Use this workflow when you administer the server files directly rather than through a game-hosting panel.
- Stop the server. Shut down the RimWorld Together server cleanly before opening its configuration files.
- Open the configuration directory. Go to the server installation’s
Configfolder. The official documentation describes this as the normal location for server configuration files: Creating a Server. - Open
ChatConfig.json. This is the chat-specific configuration file, not a player save or world file. - Turn the feature on. Change the value of
EnableMoTDfromfalseto the JSON Booleantrue. Do not put Boolean values in quotation marks. - Enter the welcome text. Replace the value of
MessageOfTheDaywith your message. Text must be inside double quotation marks. - Save valid JSON. Keep the surrounding braces, commas, quotation marks and property names intact. Then start the server and ask a player to disconnect and reconnect so the join event occurs again.
A minimal configuration has this shape (your file may contain additional chat properties):

}The sample shows the data types that matter: true is unquoted, while the MOTD is a quoted string. If the existing file has a comma after the MOTD or other properties before and after it, preserve the file’s normal comma placement rather than replacing the whole file with the sample.

Editing text without breaking the file
Use a plain text or code editor that does not add formatting characters. A straight apostrophe and ordinary punctuation are safest. If you need a quotation mark inside the message, JSON requires it to be escaped as "; an unescaped quote ends the string early and can prevent the server from reading the file. Likewise, a literal backslash may need escaping. Keep the message on one line unless your host’s editor explicitly supports escaped line breaks.
Do not rename the file, change its extension, or save it as a rich-text document. A file that looks like ChatConfig.json.txt is not the configuration file the server loads.
Enable the MOTD through a hosting panel
Managed hosts use different navigation labels, but each workflow edits the same two settings. Stop the server before changing the configuration, save the file or form, then start it again when the panel procedure calls for a restart.

Shockbyte’s procedure, published March 11, 2026, uses a form-based panel:
- Sign in to the Shockbyte control panel and open the RimWorld Together server.
- Stop the server.
- Open Config, then choose Chat Config.
- Enable Enable MOTD (Message Of The Day).
- Enter the welcome text in the MOTD field.
- Save the configuration and start the server.

- Log in to the game control panel.
- Stop the server.
- Open Configuration Files.
- Select
ChatConfig.jsonin the text editor. - Set
EnableMoTDtoTrue. The panel may display an uppercase Boolean even though JSON files commonly use lowercasetrue. - Enter the text for
MessageOfTheDayand save.

If your provider is not listed, search the panel for Chat Config, Chat, or a file named ChatConfig.json. The labels can change, but those two property names identify the MOTD controls.

Verify that the server loaded the change
- Confirm that the saved file still contains
EnableMoTDset to an enabled Boolean and a non-emptyMessageOfTheDaystring. - Start the server after the edit. If the panel has a separate save and restart action, complete both rather than only closing the editor.
- Join with a player account that was not already connected during the change. Disconnecting and reconnecting forces the login event that displays the MOTD.
- Check the server console or panel status for a configuration or JSON parse error. A startup error means the file needs correction before further testing.
A player who remains connected while you edit will not necessarily see a new join message; the feature is tied to login, not to an in-session refresh.
Troubleshoot an MOTD that does not appear
The message is missing, but the server starts normally
- Reopen
ChatConfig.jsonor the Chat configuration page and check thatEnableMoTDis enabled. A correctly written message is ignored while this switch is false. - Check that the text was entered in
MessageOfTheDay, not in a similarly named field or a different configuration file. - Perform a complete stop-and-start cycle, then reconnect. Editing a file while the process is running does not guarantee that the running process reloads it.
- Verify that you edited the active server instance. Multiple installations, test servers and provider-created copies can have separate
Configdirectories.
The panel rejects the save or the server reports a JSON error
- Compare the edited section with the required types:
trueorfalseforEnableMoTD, and a quoted string forMessageOfTheDay. - Look for a missing comma between properties, an extra comma before a closing brace, or a quotation mark inside the message that was not escaped.
- Undo the last change using the backup or the panel’s restore option, then make one small edit and save again.
- Do not paste Markdown or HTML as a substitute for valid JSON syntax. The configuration editor still requires a valid JSON document even when the message itself contains ordinary text.
The setting turns off after a restart
- Make sure the server was stopped before you edited the file. A running process can write its previous values back during shutdown.
- Use the provider’s Save button if the panel has one; closing a text editor or browser tab may discard the change.
- Check whether you changed a generated or temporary file rather than the configuration file loaded by the active service. The stable filename is
ChatConfig.jsonin the server’s configuration area.
Only some players report seeing it
Test with a fresh reconnect and the same server address that regular players use. The MOTD is delivered at login, so players who never reconnect after the change cannot confirm the new text. If newly connecting players still receive nothing, return to the enabled flag, message field and active-instance checks above.
Safe operating checklist
- Stop the server before a direct file edit.
- Back up the current configuration or copy it elsewhere.
- Edit only
EnableMoTDandMessageOfTheDayunless you have a separate reason to change another chat setting. - Keep JSON punctuation and data types valid.
- Save through the panel or editor, then start the server.
- Reconnect a player and confirm the exact text.
Where to look when a host changes its interface
Provider dashboards are wrappers around the server’s configuration, so a renamed menu does not imply a different MOTD system. Start with the server’s configuration area and look for either a chat form or a JSON editor. In a form, identify the enable switch and the message field. In an editor, search within ChatConfig.json for EnableMoTD. If it is present, place the welcome text in the adjacent MessageOfTheDay property instead of creating a new key.
The official RimWorld Together documentation is the reference for the underlying file and property names: Server Configuration. Host-specific navigation can change independently, so use the current labels shown in your account while keeping those key names unchanged.
Quick decision guide
- You manage the machine: stop the server, edit
Config/ChatConfig.json, enableEnableMoTD, setMessageOfTheDay, save, start and reconnect. - Your host offers a Chat Config form: open that form, enable the MOTD switch, enter the message, save and follow its restart workflow.
- Your host offers Configuration Files: open
ChatConfig.json, edit the two keys directly, save and restart. - The MOTD still does not show: validate JSON, confirm the active server path, perform a full restart and test with a newly connected player.
