To enable the minimap on a Project Zomboid dedicated server, stop the server, open its sandbox variables file, set AllowMiniMap = true, save the file, and restart the server. The filename depends on the world or server name, so search the server files for AllowMiniMap instead of relying on a fixed line number.
What the setting does
Project Zomboid controls the server-wide minimap permission through the AllowMiniMap sandbox variable. When that variable is set to true, players on the server can open the minimap window. When it is set to false, the minimap is disabled even if a player presses the normal map key.

This is a server configuration change, not a client-only preference. Edit the file used by the world you actually run, then restart the server so it loads the new sandbox values. Changing a different world file, editing while the server is running, or skipping the restart can leave the active server unchanged.
Before you edit the server
Make sure you can stop and start the server
You need permission to stop the Project Zomboid server and access its configuration files. A hosted server normally exposes those files through its control panel; a self-hosted installation exposes them in the server’s Zomboid data directory. Do not edit the live file while the server is writing configuration data. Stop the instance first, wait for the panel or console to report that it is offline, and only then open the file.

Identify the world or server name
Sandbox files are associated with the world or server name. That means two worlds on the same machine can have different files and different minimap settings. Note the name shown in the server’s startup configuration or hosting panel before you browse to the file. If you change one world file but launch another, players will not see the change.
Create a simple backup
Before changing a configuration file, download a copy or duplicate it in the panel. The only required edit is one Boolean value, so a backup makes it easy to restore the previous state if another setting is accidentally changed or the file is saved with invalid punctuation.
Enable the minimap step by step
1. Stop the server
- Open your server control panel or the terminal used to manage the dedicated server.
- Choose the panel’s Stop or equivalent shutdown action.
- Wait until the server is fully stopped. Do not edit the file while the process is still running.
Stopping first matters because the running server may have the old sandbox values in memory and may write its own copy during shutdown.
2. Open the sandbox variables file
Look in the server’s configuration area for the sandbox variables file. Common layouts described for Project Zomboid servers include a path under Zomboid/Server/<WorldName> with a world-specific file such as world_SandboxVars.lua. Another common default filename is dedicated_SandboxVars.lua. The exact name is not universal: it is tied to the world or server name and to how the server was created.

Hosting panels such as Pterodactyl and Starbase commonly expose configuration files from a Files tab. If you see several sandbox files, use the one whose name matches the world or server that the panel starts.

3. Search for AllowMiniMap
Open the file in the panel editor or a plain-text editor and use Ctrl+F to search for AllowMiniMap. Search text is more reliable than a line number: different guides place the setting around lines 446, 501, or 778, and formatting or game changes can move it.

The existing entry normally resembles this:
AllowMiniMap = false,The capitalization and spelling matter. Search for the exact variable name, including the capital letters in MiniMap.
4. Change the value to true
Replace only the Boolean value:
AllowMiniMap = true,Leave the setting inside the existing SandboxVars table. Keep the comma if another setting follows it. Do not put quotation marks around true; it is a Boolean value, not text. Likewise, do not use "true", yes, or 1 for this setting.
5. Add the entry if it is missing
If a search finds no active AllowMiniMap line, inspect the file for a commented-out version or add the setting manually inside the SandboxVars table. A minimal placement looks like this:

}Use the file’s existing indentation and place a comma after the new entry when another table member follows it. If the final entry in the table has no following member, follow the surrounding formatting, but keeping a comma is commonly accepted in the table style shown by server configuration files. Do not create a second, separate SandboxVars table elsewhere in the file.

A commented line is not active configuration. For example:
-- AllowMiniMap = false,Either uncomment it and change the value, or add one active line. Having two active entries with different values makes the file ambiguous and should be avoided.
6. Save the file
Use the editor’s Save action, then confirm that the file still contains AllowMiniMap = true. Some hosting panels have a separate save button below the editor; closing the tab without using that button can discard the change. If you downloaded the file to edit it locally, upload the saved copy back to the same directory and confirm that the panel reports a successful upload.
7. Restart the server
- Return to the server control page.
- Start the server.
- Wait until it has finished starting and accepts player connections.
- Join the same world whose sandbox file you edited.
A restart is required for the changed sandbox value to be loaded. Starting the server without saving the file first, or joining an already-running instance, will not apply the new permission.

After joining, press M, the default map key. The minimap window should appear when AllowMiniMap is enabled. If your controls have been remapped, use the key assigned to the map action instead of assuming that M is still active.

If the minimap still does not appear
Check that you edited the active world
The most common configuration mistake is editing a file for a different world or server name. Recheck the name used by the launch configuration and compare it with the prefix of the _SandboxVars.lua file. If the panel lists multiple worlds, open the files associated with the instance you actually started rather than the first file in the directory.
Confirm the value is active and spelled correctly
Search again after saving. The active line should read AllowMiniMap = true; a line beginning with -- is only a comment. Check the capitalization and make sure the value is not wrapped in quotes. If the editor has both a preview and a saved-file view, verify the saved view as well.
Restart after every configuration change
Sandbox settings are read when the server starts. If you changed the file while the server was stopped but then only reconnected to an existing process, stop and start the instance again. A full restart also provides a clear point at which to confirm that the panel loaded the edited file.

When adding the line yourself, keep it inside the SandboxVars table and preserve the commas used by neighboring entries. A missing comma, an extra quote, or a second malformed table can prevent the configuration from being interpreted as intended. Restore the backup if the server reports a configuration or startup error immediately after the edit, then reapply only the single value change.
Use the correct map control
The default map key is M, but a player may have changed the key binding. Test the map action shown in that player’s controls if pressing M does nothing. This check separates a keyboard-binding issue from a server permission issue.

Do not rely on a stale panel option
Older instructions describe an Allow Mini-Map option in a web panel’s in-game map settings. That interface belongs to an older build or panel workflow. When the option is absent or does not affect the current server, use the sandbox variables file and the AllowMiniMap entry instead. The file-based setting is the reliable route for the current configuration layout described above.
Minimap permission versus remote-player visibility
AllowMiniMap controls whether the minimap itself is allowed. It is separate from the setting that determines how other players are shown on the map. Player visibility is configured in pzserver.ini, using a setting such as MapRemotePlayerVisibility. If the minimap opens but another player’s marker is missing, changing AllowMiniMap again will not address that visibility rule.
Edit pzserver.ini only when you specifically need to change remote-player visibility, and restart the server after that change as well. Keep the two tasks separate: first confirm that the minimap window opens, then investigate player-marker visibility if that is the remaining problem.
Panel workflow checklist
For a panel-managed server, this sequence avoids the most common mistakes:
- Click Stop and wait for the instance to become offline.
- Open Files.
- Open the sandbox variables file that matches the running world or server name.
- Search for
AllowMiniMap, ignoring line numbers. - Set the active value to
true; if absent, add it insideSandboxVarswith the appropriate comma. - Click the panel’s file-editor Save control.
- Start the server and wait for it to finish loading.
- Join the world and press M or the player’s map key.

For a server managed directly on a computer, the same setting change applies:
