Enable the gd PHP extension in the PHP runtime that serves your WordPress site, then verify it in Dashboard > Tools > Site Health > Info > Media Handling. That panel shows whether WordPress can see GD, which image editor is active, the GD version, and the formats compiled into the running installation. Finish by uploading or editing an image in the Media Library.
If Site Health still reports no GD support, changing a WordPress setting will not fix it. The web server may be using a different PHP installation than your command line, the extension may be disabled for the selected PHP version, or your host may control the setting.
What the GD library does in WordPress
GD is a PHP extension and graphics library that WordPress can use to resize, crop, rotate, create thumbnails, and otherwise manipulate uploaded images. WordPress connects to GD through its WP_Image_Editor_GD implementation. Image uploads can still work when another editor is selected, but GD must be available if you want WordPress to use that implementation or fall back to it.
WordPress documentation states that the GD PHP library has been included by default since PHP 4.3, so it is available in most hosting environments. “Included by default” does not mean it is enabled for every account, PHP version, or server handler. A hosting provider can compile PHP without the extension, disable it in the active configuration, or expose different settings to command-line PHP and web PHP.

Check whether WordPress already sees GD
Start in WordPress rather than changing files blindly. Site Health reports the capabilities of the PHP process that actually runs your site.
- Sign in to the WordPress administration area.
- Open Tools > Site Health.
- Select the Info tab.
- Expand Media Handling.
- Record the active image editor, the GD version, and the list of supported formats.
If the active editor is WP_Image_Editor_GD and a GD version is shown, GD is already enabled for the web request. If Imagick is listed as the active editor, WordPress is using Imagick instead; GD may still be installed as a fallback. If the panel does not show GD details, continue with the PHP or hosting steps below.

The exact procedure depends on who controls PHP. The important rule is to enable GD in the same PHP runtime and handler used by the WordPress site, not merely in a separate command-line installation.
When a hosting company manages PHP
Shared, managed, and many control-panel plans do not allow customers to install PHP extensions. Ask support to enable the gd extension for the PHP version and web handler assigned to the domain. Include the domain, PHP version, and the Site Health result. Ask the provider to confirm that the extension is loaded for web requests, not only for command-line PHP.
There is no universal hosting-panel procedure. Menu names and available PHP modules differ by provider, operating system, PHP handler, and account permissions. If the provider cannot enable GD, it may need to move the site to a PHP version or plan that includes the extension.

When you control a Linux or Unix PHP build
Enable GD while building or configuring the PHP version used by the web server. PHP changed the configure option in version 7.4: --with-gd became --enable-gd to enable the extension, while --with-external-gd opts into an external libgd instead of PHP’s bundled library.
After changing the build or installing the module supplied by your operating system, make sure the web-server PHP handler loads that version. A command-line binary can report GD while PHP-FPM or an Apache module serving WordPress uses another installation. Verify from WordPress Site Health after the service has been reloaded.
When you run PHP on Windows
Open the php.ini used by the web server and load the GD extension. For current PHP releases the DLL is named php_gd.dll. Before PHP 8.0 it was named php_gd2.dll. Enable the line that loads the DLL, save the file, and reload the PHP service or web server if your setup requires it.
Do not edit a random php.ini. PHP can use different configuration files for command-line and web requests. The file that matters is the one used by the web server’s PHP handler. Site Health is the reliable confirmation because it observes that web runtime directly.
Check GD’s image-format dependencies
Enabling the extension does not guarantee every image format. PHP documents that GD’s capabilities depend on the GD version and the libraries linked into that build. PHP’s requirements specify libgd 2.1.0 or newer, or PHP’s bundled GD, and list zlib version 1.2.0.4 or newer among the requirements.

Use the formats shown under Media Handling as the authoritative list for your installation. Do not assume that JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, or another format is available merely because GD is present. A missing format normally indicates how GD was built or which supporting library is available, rather than a WordPress media-setting problem.
If a format you need is absent, ask the host which GD and supporting-library versions are compiled into the active PHP runtime. On a self-managed server, install or enable the required libraries, rebuild or replace the PHP module according to your distribution’s process, and then recheck Site Health.
Reload PHP and the web server
PHP reads extensions when its process starts. After editing php.ini, changing a PHP build, or enabling a module in a hosting panel, reload or restart the relevant PHP service when the environment requires it. The exact service name and control-panel action vary by operating system, PHP handler, and provider, so use the procedure for your installation.
A browser refresh alone may not replace a long-running PHP-FPM worker or an Apache process. If Site Health continues to show the old state, confirm that the service was reloaded and that the edited configuration belongs to the active PHP handler.

Verify GD with a real WordPress operation
Once Site Health shows GD, perform a normal operation instead of relying only on configuration output.

- Open Media > Add New and upload a supported JPEG or PNG.
- Open the uploaded item and use WordPress’s image-editing controls to make a small crop or rotate change.
- Save the edit and confirm that WordPress creates the edited image and its thumbnails.
- Return to Tools > Site Health > Info > Media Handling if the operation fails, and compare the active editor and supported-format list with the file you tested.
A successful upload and edit confirms that the web runtime can use the selected editor for that format. It does not prove that every other format is compiled into GD.
Troubleshoot the common failure paths
Site Health says GD is missing
WordPress core checks that the gd extension is loaded and that gd_info() exists before selecting its GD editor. If either check fails, WordPress settings cannot enable GD. Enable the extension in the PHP runtime, or ask the host to do so, then reload PHP and revisit Site Health.
The command line shows GD, but WordPress does not
This usually means the CLI PHP binary and the web PHP handler are different versions or use different configuration files. Compare the PHP version and configuration used by the domain with the one you inspected in a terminal. Ask the provider to identify the PHP handler for the site and confirm that gd is loaded there.

Imagick is active instead of GD
WordPress can select Imagick when it is available. An Imagick entry in Site Health is not, by itself, an error and does not prove that GD is absent. If your goal is specifically to use GD, make sure GD is loaded and then determine why the current editor selection prefers Imagick. If your goal is simply reliable image processing, test the active editor with the formats and operations your site needs.
GD is listed, but one format fails
Read the supported-format list in Site Health. GD format support is build-dependent and relies on linked libraries such as libgd and zlib. A file can therefore fail while another format succeeds. Test with a format explicitly listed as supported, then ask the host about the missing codec or rebuild the self-managed PHP installation with the required dependencies.

Uploads work but thumbnails or edits fail
Uploading a file only proves that PHP accepted the request and stored the original. Thumbnail generation and editing invoke an image editor. Check which editor is active, whether the file’s format appears in the supported list, and whether the PHP process was reloaded after enabling GD. If the editor and format are present, have the host inspect PHP error logs and resource limits for the web handler.
The extension keeps disappearing after a PHP change
GD is enabled per PHP installation or version. Switching the domain to another PHP version, changing handlers, or replacing a hosting image can require enabling the extension again for that runtime. Recheck Site Health after every PHP-version or handler change.
GD and Imagick: how WordPress chooses
GD and Imagick are separate PHP image-editor options. WordPress documents GD through WP_Image_Editor_GD and may use Imagick when it is available. The practical choice depends on what the host exposes and which formats your site needs.

There is no single memory or performance threshold that applies to every GD or Imagick installation. PHP version, image dimensions, linked libraries, host limits, and the selected handler all affect behavior. Choose based on the editor that is actually available and test the image formats and sizes your site receives.
What to give your hosting provider
A precise support request avoids a long exchange. Send:
- The site’s domain and the PHP version selected for it.
- A screenshot or transcription of Tools > Site Health > Info > Media Handling.
- The image format that fails and whether the failure occurs during upload, thumbnail creation, or editing.
- A request to confirm the web PHP handler, the loaded
gdextension, the GD version, and compiled formats. - A request to reload the relevant PHP service after the change.
This information distinguishes a missing extension from a format dependency, a handler mismatch, or a problem unrelated to GD.

WordPress’s Media settings control sizes and image-processing preferences, but they cannot install a server library. WordPress documentation notes that php-gd must be installed on the server to use image features that depend on it. If the PHP runtime fails WordPress’s GD checks, the remedy is at the server, PHP-build, or hosting-account level.
