To enable command, option, and argument completion for a Bash user in Ubuntu, install the bash-completion package, make sure the guarded loader is active in the user’s ~/.bashrc, and reload Bash. Run sudo apt update, then sudo apt install bash-completion. For every account—including accounts created later—enable the same loader in Ubuntu’s system-wide interactive Bash startup configuration and verify the target release’s skeleton files.
Why Tab completes filenames but not command options
Bash has more than one kind of completion. Its built-in filename completion can work even when programmable completion is absent. That is why pressing Tab may complete a path while failing to suggest a command’s options, subcommands, or argument values.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUbuntu’s bash-completion package is described in the Ubuntu package index as “programmable completion for the bash shell.” It supplies completion recipes that Bash can use for commands, options, and arguments. Bash’s programmable-completion facility then loads those recipes when an interactive Bash startup file sources the package’s loader.
The package alone is not the whole configuration. Depending on the Ubuntu release and how Bash is started, the loader may need to be sourced from ~/.bashrc, /etc/bash.bashrc, or another startup file that those files load. Ubuntu’s defaults have changed over time, so treat the procedure below as a check-and-enable process rather than assuming that every release activates completion automatically.

Check the shell and account scope first
Confirm that the session uses Bash
The instructions apply to Bash. Check the shell recorded for your current session with:
echo "$SHELL"
If this identifies another shell, such as Zsh or Fish, Bash startup files will not control that shell’s completion system. You can still install the package for Bash users, but you must configure the other shell according to its own completion mechanism.

A per-user setup changes only the account whose home directory contains the edited ~/.bashrc. It is the safest choice when you are testing completion or when users need different shell customizations.
A system-wide setup changes the interactive Bash startup path for users on the machine. This is appropriate for managed workstations, teaching systems, servers with several administrators, and images from which new accounts are provisioned. System-wide configuration should be tested against the exact Ubuntu release you deploy because startup-file locations and default comments are not identical across releases.
Enable completion for the current user
1. Install the package
- Refresh Ubuntu’s package metadata:
sudo apt update
- Install the completion package:
sudo apt install bash-completion
The package manager installs the maintained completion definitions and the loader that makes them available to Bash. Using the distribution package is preferable to copying individual completion scripts by hand because updates can replace definitions consistently and dependencies remain visible to the package manager.
2. Inspect the user startup file
Open the current user’s Bash startup file with an editor, for example:
Recommended Free Tools
nano ~/.bashrc
Look for the standard guarded block:
# enable bash completion in interactive shells
if ! shopt -oq posix; then
if [ -f /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion ]; then
. /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion
elif [ -f /etc/bash_completion ]; then
. /etc/bash_completion
fi
fi
The leading dots are Bash’s shorthand for source. The first file path is the normal location installed by the package in current Ubuntu layouts; the second is a fallback used by older or alternative layouts.

3. Uncomment the block without changing its guard
Ubuntu may ship the block already present but commented out. Remove the comment character from each line of the block, preserving the indentation and both file checks. Do not replace it with an unconditional source command. The shopt -oq posix test prevents the Bash completion loader from being read when Bash is operating in POSIX mode, and the file tests avoid an error when neither supported loader path exists.
If the block is missing, add the complete version shown above near the end of ~/.bashrc. Keep unrelated aliases, prompt settings, and environment exports intact. A malformed conditional can stop the rest of ~/.bashrc from loading, so check that every if has a matching fi.
4. Apply the change to the current shell
Save the file and reload it:
source ~/.bashrc
This applies the loader to the existing interactive shell. Opening a new terminal starts a fresh interactive shell and reads the startup files again; Ubuntu’s Bash-completion documentation specifically notes that persistent completion setup requires starting a new shell.

Press Tab after a partial filename to confirm ordinary filename completion still works. Then test a command for which the package supplies option or argument recipes. A successful programmable-completion setup should present context-sensitive candidates rather than only directory and filename names.
When testing, type the command and a partial option exactly as you would in normal use. Completion is context-sensitive: the candidates after a command name can differ from those after an option, and some commands intentionally offer no completion for a particular argument position.
What the guarded loader does
The POSIX-mode check
shopt -oq posix asks Bash whether POSIX mode is enabled. The leading exclamation mark makes the outer condition succeed only when POSIX mode is not active. This keeps a Bash-specific completion framework out of sessions that are expected to follow stricter POSIX behavior.
The preferred and fallback paths
The inner condition checks for /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion, the path normally provided by the Ubuntu package. If it is absent, the elif checks /etc/bash_completion. The loader is sourced only when one of those files exists, so a partial installation does not produce a “file not found” message on every new shell.

Why startup context matters
Completion is a shell feature, not a property of the terminal emulator. A terminal can open Bash, another shell, a login shell, or a non-interactive command. The loader belongs in an interactive Bash startup path. Sourcing it from an unrelated script may waste startup time or expose interactive-only functions to scripts that were not designed to use them.
Enable completion system-wide for existing and future users
1. Identify the interactive Bash startup file on the target release
Ubuntu commonly uses /etc/bash.bashrc for system-wide interactive Bash settings. Some installations instead use a profile script that is loaded by the distribution’s startup chain. Inspect the files on the actual image or host rather than copying assumptions from a different Ubuntu release.
Search for an existing completion block and for references to either loader path. Preserve the distribution’s structure if it already provides a commented section. Historical Ubuntu configuration has involved /etc/profile.d/bash_completion.sh, /etc/skel/.bashrc, and commented sections of /etc/bash.bashrc; those differences are the reason to verify the release you administer.
2. Install the package once for the system
Use the package manager as an administrator:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install bash-completion
The files are then available to all users, subject to their startup configuration and shell choice.
3. Add or enable the guarded block
Edit the system-wide interactive Bash file with an administrative editor, such as:
sudoedit /etc/bash.bashrc
Enable the same guarded block shown in the per-user procedure, or enable the release-provided equivalent. Keep the POSIX test and both loader paths. Do not add a second unconditional source line elsewhere merely because one account failed to load completion; first determine which startup file that account actually reads.
4. Test with a clean Bash session
Existing shells do not automatically reread system-wide files. Open a new terminal or start a new interactive Bash session after saving the change. Test as an ordinary user, not only as root, because home-directory files and shell selection can differ by account.

5. Consider the account-creation template
When the goal is to provision users who do not yet exist, inspect the skeleton directory used by the target Ubuntu image, commonly /etc/skel. A new account normally receives copies of skeleton files when its home directory is created. If the completion block is required in every new user’s personal configuration, ensure the skeleton’s .bashrc contains the approved guarded block before creating accounts.
Skeleton files affect accounts created after the change; they do not retroactively modify existing home directories. Existing users therefore need the system-wide interactive configuration, an individual ~/.bashrc update, or both, depending on your policy.
Do not assume that every Ubuntu release uses the same skeleton contents or that every account-management tool copies exactly the same files. Verify by creating a disposable test account on the image, opening an interactive Bash session, and checking completion before rolling the configuration into production.
Choose the right activation method
| Approach | Scope | When it takes effect | Maintenance and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
Per-user ~/.bashrc |
One account | After source ~/.bashrc or a new interactive shell |
Useful for testing and individualized settings; every account must be updated separately. |
| System-wide interactive Bash file | Accounts that use the host’s interactive Bash startup path | New shells; existing shells require a reload or restart | Central policy and one update point, but release-specific startup behavior must be verified. |
Skeleton .bashrc |
Accounts created after the template is changed | When a new home directory is populated and its first shell starts | Good for provisioning future users; it does not change existing home directories. |
| Package-managed completion | Any configured Bash user on the system | When the loader is sourced | Receives Ubuntu package updates and standard paths; still requires correct startup activation. |
| Hand-written completion scripts | Only the commands and users you configure | According to each script’s source location | Can cover a custom command, but creates a separate update and review burden; it is not a substitute for enabling the package. |
| Bash configuration | Bash sessions only | When Bash reads the relevant startup file | Other shells need their own completion systems and startup files. |
Troubleshoot when Tab completion still fails
1. Check that the package is installed
Query the package database:
dpkg -s bash-completion
For repository and installation-state information, use:
apt policy bash-completion
If the package is not installed, run the installation command from the per-user procedure. If the package is installed but the candidate version is unexpected, confirm that the configured Ubuntu repositories match the release you intend to maintain before changing packages.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Check that the loader exists
Verify the preferred path:
test -f /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion && echo "loader found"
If that test does not print anything, check the fallback path:
test -f /etc/bash_completion && echo "fallback loader found"
A missing file with an installed package can indicate an incomplete installation or a layout different from the one expected by your startup block. Recheck the package contents and the release-specific configuration rather than hard-coding a new path.

3. Check which shell is actually running
Run:
echo "$SHELL"
If the result is not Bash, the Bash loader will not configure the current shell. A terminal profile can also launch a shell different from the account’s default, so inspect the terminal’s command setting when the value and observed behavior disagree.
4. Check the startup file and guard
Confirm that the complete guarded block is active in ~/.bashrc or in the system-wide interactive startup file. Common mistakes include leaving only the first line uncommented, deleting one of the closing fi lines, changing a path, or placing the block in a profile file that the interactive shell never reads.
Read the file as the affected user. A system-wide block does not override a user’s later configuration if that configuration disables completion or starts a different shell.
5. Reload the correct context
For a personal change, run:
source ~/.bashrc
For a system-wide change, start a new terminal or a new interactive Bash session. Reloading an unrelated profile file will not necessarily reproduce the startup sequence used by the terminal. If a new shell works but an old shell does not, the configuration is active and the old process simply has not reread it.
6. Distinguish filename completion from programmable completion
Test a filename and a command option separately. Filename completion can remain functional when the programmable loader was never sourced. If filenames complete but command options do not, focus on package installation, the loader path, the startup guard, and the shell identity rather than on the keyboard or terminal.
Operational guidance for administrators
Keep distribution files recognizable
Use the package’s standard loader and Ubuntu’s guarded pattern instead of embedding a large collection of copied completion functions in every user’s home directory. A recognizable block makes later diagnosis easier and allows package updates to provide new command definitions without manual merging.
Test both existing and newly created accounts
A change to /etc/bash.bashrc and a change to /etc/skel/.bashrc solve different provisioning problems. Test an existing account, a newly created account, and an account whose login shell is not Bash. Record which startup file each test actually reads so a future Ubuntu image upgrade does not silently remove the activation path.
Do not broaden the claim beyond Bash
Installing bash-completion does not automatically configure every shell on the machine. The package supplies programmable completion for Bash; users of another shell need that shell’s own completion framework. Likewise, a non-interactive script should not be expected to gain interactive Tab behavior simply because the package is installed.
Quick Recap
Summary of the reliable procedure
- Confirm the user runs Bash.
- Install
bash-completionwithsudo apt updatefollowed bysudo apt install bash-completion. - Enable the guarded loader in
~/.bashrc, preserving the POSIX check and both supported file paths. - Run
source ~/.bashrcor open a new terminal. - For a host-wide policy, enable the block in the release’s system-wide interactive Bash startup file.
- For users created later, inspect and update the target image’s skeleton configuration, then verify with a disposable account.
- If completion fails, check the package, loader path, shell, startup file, reload state, and the difference between filename and programmable completion in that order.
