You can enable SVG uploads in WordPress safely, but only if every uploaded file is sanitized before it is stored or served. The practical approach is to install a maintained sanitizer such as Safe SVG, restrict SVG capability to the smallest group of trusted users, and test every upload route your site actually uses. Do not simply add image/svg+xml with a MIME filter: custom code, replacement plugins, REST handlers, WP-CLI commands, page builders, and migration tools may use upload paths that a sanitizer cannot intercept.
Back up the site and test in staging first. Then verify both the normal Media Library flow and any alternative import or replacement workflow. If a path bypasses sanitization, leave it disabled until its vendor provides a safe integration or the path is changed.

Why SVG uploads need more than a MIME setting
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML document rather than a passive bitmap. It can contain active elements, scripting-related constructs, event handlers, embedded data, and references to external content. A file that looks like a logo can therefore create a cross-site scripting or data-exposure risk when it is accepted from an untrusted source and later rendered in the browser.
Wordfence’s secure-coding guidance recommends validating both file type and extension and identifies SVG among extensions that can be harmful when uploads are uncontrolled. A MIME-type allowance only tells WordPress to accept a file; it does not remove dangerous XML or prove that every upload route validates the content.

A safe design has three separate controls:
- Content sanitization: parse the XML and remove or reject unsafe structures before storage or delivery.
- Least-privilege permissions: allow only trusted roles or capabilities to submit SVG files.
- Complete path coverage: confirm that Media Library, sideload, REST, command-line, replacement, builder, and migration paths all apply the sanitizer.
Which WordPress sanitizer should you use?
Use a maintained plugin whose security model and upload coverage match your site. The following projects document SVG sanitization and permission controls, but their implementation details differ.
| Option | Sanitization approach | Permission controls | Important compatibility or maintenance detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safe SVG | Sanitizes SVG/XML uploads to remove unsafe content. | Lets administrators choose which roles may upload SVG. | Hooks common wp_handle_upload() and wp_handle_sideload() flows. Its technical documentation warns that arbitrary calls to the lower-level _wp_handle_upload() can bypass guaranteed sanitization. |
| SaniGlyph SVG | Fail-closed allowlist validation; unsafe or unsupported files are rejected rather than rewritten. | Role-based permissions are supported. | Requires PHP’s DOM extension for strict XML sanitization. Accepts plain .svg, intentionally not .svgz. |
| SVG Support | Advertises automatic sanitization. | Provides role-based restrictions. | Its changelog includes fixes concerning security and upload-path behavior; review current requirements and updates before deployment. |
Compare candidates on sanitization model (rewrite-and-clean versus fail-closed rejection), the paths they cover, capability handling, current WordPress and PHP support, security advisories, dependency updates, and rendering behavior. A plugin that sanitizes normal Media Library uploads is not automatically safe for every custom endpoint.

- Back up the site. Keep a restorable database and files backup, including the uploads directory and active plugin configuration.
- Use staging. Reproduce the production theme, page builder, replacement plugin, REST integrations, and import tools in a non-public environment.
- Inventory upload routes. Write down how editors and automation add media: Media Library, block editor, front-end forms, REST sideloads, WP-CLI, media-replacement tools, page builders, and migration utilities.
- Identify trusted users. Decide which role genuinely needs SVG. Do not grant the capability to every registered user or to anonymous forms.
- Check requirements. Confirm the sanitizer’s supported WordPress/PHP versions and any extensions. For SaniGlyph SVG, PHP’s DOM extension is required for strict XML sanitization.

- In staging, open Plugins > Add New Plugin.
- Search for Safe SVG, verify that the listing links to the project at
wordpress.org/plugins/safe-svg/, and install it from the WordPress plugin directory. - Select Activate. Do not add a separate MIME filter just to make the Media Library accept SVG.
- Open the plugin’s settings or role-permission screen. Select only the roles that need to upload SVG. If the workflow permits it, start with administrators or a dedicated trusted editorial role and expand only after testing.
- Leave sanitization enabled. Do not choose an option that stores the original unsanitized XML for later public delivery.
- Save the settings, sign in as a user with the permitted role, and upload a harmless test logo through Media > Add New.
- Inspect the attachment in the Media Library and place it in a staging page. Confirm that the image displays, the expected dimensions and viewBox remain intact, and the upload does not produce script, browser-console, or permission errors.
- Repeat the test as a role that was not granted SVG permission. It should be rejected while ordinary permitted image types continue to work.
Verify that the file was actually sanitized
A successful upload is not proof that unsafe content was removed. Use a disposable test file containing harmless but clearly identifiable elements, then inspect the stored result in staging. The test should establish that disallowed XML is removed or the file is rejected, not merely that the filename ends in .svg.
- Check the attachment URL in a browser and confirm it renders only as the intended image.
- Review the sanitized file for the removal or rejection of script blocks, event-handler attributes, external references, embedded HTML, and other constructs outside the plugin’s allowlist.
- Try a malformed XML file and a file whose extension is
.svgbut whose content is not valid SVG. A secure sanitizer should reject unsupported input or fail closed rather than silently trusting the extension. - Check server and WordPress logs for upload errors, PHP extension failures, or capability-denied responses.
- Delete test attachments after verification so they cannot be mistaken for production media.
Test every upload path your site uses
Safe SVG’s documented hooks cover common wp_handle_upload() and wp_handle_sideload() paths. WordPress code can also call the lower-level _wp_handle_upload() function with an arbitrary action name. Safe SVG’s project documentation describes its refusal to claim universal coverage as a deliberate security decision: “This is a deliberate design decision: Safe SVG prioritizes guaranteed sanitization over broad compatibility.”
That distinction matters when a file uploads successfully in the Media Library but fails—or succeeds without sanitization—elsewhere. Test each route separately.

Media replacement plugins
Replace an existing attachment with a harmless SVG in staging. Confirm the replacement is sanitized before the old file is removed and that generated metadata, responsive references, and cache layers still point to the correct file. If the replacement plugin calls an unsupported low-level action, disable SVG replacement or obtain a vendor fix rather than adding a global MIME allowance.
REST API and sideloads
Exercise the exact REST endpoint and authentication method used by your integration. A normal sideload may reach wp_handle_sideload(), while custom code can bypass the sanitizer. Verify the response, the stored attachment, and the downloaded XML—not just the HTTP status code.
WP-CLI imports
Run the same import command used in deployment or content migration against staging. Inspect the resulting attachment and verify that the command’s implementation uses a sanitized path. If it writes directly to the uploads directory or invokes an unsupported action, do not permit SVG through that command.

Page builders and front-end forms
Upload as the exact editor or front-end role that uses the builder or form. Confirm that capability checks, temporary files, asynchronous requests, and final attachment creation all preserve sanitization. Anonymous or broadly registered-user SVG uploads should remain disabled unless the entire workflow is specifically designed and reviewed for untrusted XML.
Migration and synchronization tools
Test both export and import. Some tools copy files directly and then create attachment records, which can skip normal upload hooks. Treat a direct copy as unsafe until the tool documents sanitization or you sanitize the files before they enter the public uploads directory.
Why a global MIME filter is not a safe fix
Developers often add a filter that returns image/svg+xml for the allowed MIME map. That can make an upload appear to work, but it changes acceptance rules without cleaning the XML. If a plugin or theme calls _wp_handle_upload() using an action the sanitizer does not intercept, the MIME filter can permit an unsanitized file to be stored.

Use a MIME filter only when a sanitizer explicitly documents coverage for that exact path. Never combine a global allowance with the assumption that all current and future upload routes will be protected. If a custom endpoint needs SVG, modify it to call a documented sanitized flow, add an explicit sanitizer at the endpoint, or reject SVG there.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Control who can upload SVG
SVG capability should be narrower than ordinary image-upload capability because the format can contain active content. Configure the sanitizer’s role restriction and review the resulting capability with real accounts.
- Grant access only to users who understand the source of the files and need vector artwork.
- Do not grant SVG upload to anonymous visitors, public registration roles, or broad contributor groups by default.
- Audit custom capabilities created by membership, form, page-builder, or multisite plugins. A role may inherit a capability through a plugin even when its label suggests otherwise.
- Review administrator and editor access periodically, especially after staff changes or workflow redesigns.
- Keep media moderation and approval processes separate from the technical sanitizer; human review does not replace XML validation.
Rendering and delivery considerations
Most WordPress themes display an SVG as an external image through an <img> element. Inline SVG is a different risk surface because its markup becomes part of the page DOM and can interact with page CSS and scripts. If a builder or theme inlines uploaded SVG, verify that the sanitizer and the rendering layer both isolate unsafe content. Do not assume that a file safe as an external image is automatically safe when injected inline.
External references also deserve attention. A sanitizer should remove or reject unsupported references according to its allowlist. If your design requires remote fonts, images, or other linked resources, document those dependencies and assess whether they disclose visitor information or can be changed outside your control.
Keep the setup secure after launch
- Update WordPress, the sanitizer, themes, and every plugin that handles uploads. Read changelogs for security fixes and upload-path changes before updating production.
- Monitor the sanitizer’s WordPress.org listing and project repository for advisories, compatibility notes, and dependency changes: 10up Safe SVG repository.
- Re-run path tests after installing or updating a replacement plugin, page builder, REST integration, migration tool, or command-line package.
- Keep staging tests in your release checklist so a future developer cannot accidentally reintroduce a MIME-only workaround.
- Limit write access to the uploads directory and use standard server hardening so a compromised account cannot replace sanitized files directly.
- Review existing SVG media when first deploying a sanitizer. Files uploaded before protection may not have been cleaned; quarantine or reprocess them according to your incident and content-retention procedures.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| SVG is rejected in the Media Library | The user’s role is not allowed, the XML fails validation, or a required PHP component is missing. | Confirm the role setting, inspect logs, validate the file, and check plugin requirements. Do not disable sanitization to force acceptance. |
| Media Library upload works but replacement fails | The replacement tool uses a different action or directly handles the file. | Test the tool in staging, ask its vendor which WordPress upload API it uses, and keep SVG replacement disabled until sanitization is guaranteed. |
| REST or WP-CLI import returns success but the file is unsafe | Custom code bypasses wp_handle_upload() or wp_handle_sideload(). |
Inspect the stored XML and change the integration to a documented sanitized path or reject SVG. |
| Image displays as a broken icon | The sanitizer removed required artwork elements, the SVG is malformed, or the theme does not support the rendering mode. | Test a simple standards-compliant logo, inspect the sanitized output, and verify external-versus-inline rendering. Do not restore the original unsanitized file. |
| SVG uploads after adding a MIME filter but no sanitizer | WordPress now accepts the extension without content validation. | Remove the MIME-only change and install/configure a maintained sanitizer before accepting SVG again. |
| SaniGlyph SVG reports a DOM-related error | PHP’s DOM extension is unavailable. | Enable the required extension through your host or choose a sanitizer whose documented requirements your server meets; continue rejecting SVG until strict validation works. |
A secure developer pattern for custom endpoints
If your application must accept SVG outside the standard Media Library, treat it as a separate security feature. Define the endpoint’s accepted capabilities, validate the extension and detected content type, pass the file through a maintained sanitizer, and store only the sanitized result. Reject malformed or unsupported XML; do not “clean” it with a few string replacements.
- Require authentication and a capability granted only to trusted users or service accounts.
- Use a temporary location outside the public uploads path while validation runs.
- Validate both the filename extension and the actual file content.
- Invoke the sanitizer using its documented API or route the upload through a WordPress function it explicitly supports.
- Fail closed on parser errors, disallowed elements, external references, or missing dependencies.
- Create the attachment only after sanitization succeeds, then test the final URL and rendering mode.
- Log rejections and unusual upload activity without storing the rejected active content for public access.
When to leave SVG disabled
Do not enable SVG if you cannot identify all upload paths, cannot keep the sanitizer and its dependencies updated, or need to allow untrusted public submissions without a reviewed moderation and validation design. Raster formats are simpler for workflows that do not require scalable vector artwork. SVG can be enabled later when the site can enforce sanitization, least privilege, and complete path coverage.
