You can use NVIDIA’s app to apply selected DLSS model upgrades on a compatible RTX 40-series GPU, but you cannot enable every RTX 50-series feature. In particular, NVIDIA describes DLSS Multi Frame Generation as a feature powered by RTX 50-series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs—not an RTX 40-series option. For an RTX 40-series card, stick to NVIDIA’s supported app and driver controls, and use only overrides that match a feature the game supports and has enabled.
Which RTX 50-series features can an RTX 40-series GPU use?
NVIDIA offers software model upgrades that can be used on RTX 40-series GPUs in selected compatible games. These change the DLSS model used for supported features; they do not turn the card into a newer GPU or unlock every feature associated with RTX 50-series hardware.
| Feature or control | RTX 40-series availability | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Frame Generation Model Upgrade | Available to RTX 40-series and RTX 50-series users in supported games | Requires Frame Generation to be enabled in the game. It is a model upgrade, not Multi Frame Generation. NVIDIA’s January 6, 2025 announcement and the NVIDIA app overview describe the app override. |
| Transformer Model Upgrade | Available for RTX GPUs in supported games | Applies to DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA when the game has the corresponding feature active. NVIDIA’s app overview describes the override. |
| Smooth Motion | Supported on RTX 40-series GPUs with the required current app and Game Ready Driver updates | Check NVIDIA’s current app and driver release notes for the applicable version requirements; they are not specified here. NVIDIA’s app information |
| DLSS Multi Frame Generation | Not supported on RTX 40-series hardware | NVIDIA identifies it as powered by RTX 50-series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. NVIDIA DLSS overview |
NVIDIA’s current DLSS overview says Multi Frame Generation can generate “up to five frames per rendered frame” on the specified RTX 50-series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs. That is a capability description, not a result guaranteed for every game or system. NVIDIA’s January 6, 2025 launch announcement described up to three additional frames per traditionally rendered frame; those figures refer to different descriptions at different dates.
How to apply a supported DLSS override in the NVIDIA app
- Install the current NVIDIA app and a supported Game Ready Driver. For Smooth Motion, check the current NVIDIA release notes for the required app and driver versions.
- Open the NVIDIA app and go to Graphics.
- Under Program Settings, select the game you want to configure.
- Review Driver Settings and the available DLSS Override choices. Labels and menu locations can change between app releases.
- Choose only an override for a DLSS feature that the selected game supports, and enable that feature in the game’s own graphics settings. For example, the Frame Generation Model Upgrade requires in-game Frame Generation to be on.
- Launch the game and check its graphics settings and behavior. If the override is unavailable or the game behaves unexpectedly, turn the override off and use the game’s normal settings.
The NVIDIA app exposes overrides for compatible or selected games, not a universal switch that applies to every title. Check the per-game controls rather than assuming an option will appear for all games.

- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Can you get DLSS Multi Frame Generation on an RTX 40-series card?
No official NVIDIA-supported method documented here enables Multi Frame Generation on RTX 40-series hardware. NVIDIA’s DLSS overview specifies RTX 50-series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs for the feature. The NVIDIA app’s RTX 40-series Frame Generation Model Upgrade is a different feature and should not be mistaken for Multi Frame Generation.
If Multi Frame Generation itself is the requirement, the hardware route is an RTX 50-series GPU. That is not necessary to use the supported DLSS model upgrades available to RTX 40-series owners.

What to avoid when changing DLSS settings
- Do not replace game DLL files or use unofficial unlockers to claim access to hardware-specific features.
- Do not edit BIOS or registry values in an attempt to turn an RTX 40-series GPU into RTX 50-series hardware.
- Do not assume a driver override adds a DLSS feature that the game does not support or has not enabled.
- Do not treat NVIDIA’s stated maximum frame-generation capability as a promised result for your particular system.
NVIDIA’s cited materials explain its supported app controls and GPU compatibility; they do not assess the risks of third-party modifications. Staying with the official app, current drivers, and in-game options avoids relying on unsupported methods.
