In desktop Google Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Security, then choose Enhanced protection under Safe Browsing. Chrome’s standard phishing and malware warnings are already on by default; Enhanced protection is an optional, more proactive setting that sends more browsing-related information to Google. Other Chromium-based browsers may use different settings and security services, so Chrome’s steps do not necessarily apply to them.
If you are looking for how to turn on Enhanced Safe Browsing in Chrome, the key choice is between broader checks for potentially new threats and the additional information those checks share with Google. The setting is not a guarantee against every phishing page, and its name and availability do not carry over automatically to every browser built on Chromium.

Chrome’s menu labels or their location can vary by platform or release. If you do not see the same path, open Chrome’s Settings and look for Safe Browsing or Security. If the control is unavailable or locked, a work or school administrator may manage the browser’s phishing and malware protection.

After changing the level, check that the selection shown under Safe Browsing is the one you intended. If you use more than one browser profile or device, do not assume that changing a setting in one place has changed every browser or account control. Chrome’s browser setting and Google Account Enhanced Safe Browsing are related, but they have distinct controls and conditions.
What Chrome’s protection levels do
Chrome’s Safe Browsing levels differ both in how they check for threats and in what information they send to Google. Standard protection checks sites, extensions and downloads against unsafe lists. Chrome periodically downloads a recent copy of Google’s lists to the device. When you visit an unfamiliar site, Chrome can send an obfuscated portion of its URL through a privacy server before Google checks it. If Chrome detects suspicious behavior, Standard protection can send additional URL or page information.
Enhanced protection sends more browsing-related information to Google in real time. Google lists visited URLs, a small sample of page content, downloads, extension activity and system information. It says this added information helps identify potentially risky sites, downloads and extensions, including threats it has not previously identified. Some suspicious downloads may also be submitted for additional scans.

The practical difference is not just how often Chrome checks something. Standard protection relies on known unsafe lists and can provide additional information when suspicious behavior is detected. Enhanced protection adds warnings about potentially risky sites and iframes, downloads and extensions, including risks Google may not have identified before. That broader detection approach is why Enhanced protection may help with emerging threats, but it also means more browsing-related information is sent to Google in real time.

Google describes Enhanced protection as Chrome’s highest safety level and says it does not noticeably slow down the browser or device. That is Google’s description, not an independently measured performance result. Neither setting should be treated as a guarantee that every phishing attempt or malicious download will be caught.
Choose a protection level with the data trade-off in mind
Enhanced protection is useful if you want Chrome to check more proactively for potentially new threats and you accept sharing more browsing-related information with Google to do so. Standard protection still provides Chrome’s phishing and malware warnings while using the data-handling approach described above. Chrome’s existing warnings are on by default, so choosing Standard is not the same as turning Safe Browsing off.
Google’s concise explanation is that “Enhanced protection sends more information about your activity to Google in real time to offer stronger, more customized protection.” Consider that information-sharing trade-off before enabling it, particularly if you use a browser profile for sensitive browsing. The relevant distinction is not simply “protected” versus “unprotected”: it is the balance between broader, more proactive checks and the extra information those checks send.

When comparing the levels, consider several questions together: Do you want checks that can help identify risks Google has not previously identified? Do you want warnings covering sites, downloads and extensions? Are you comfortable with the listed browsing-related information being sent to Google in real time? Do you need a setting that your browser actually supports, or is it managed by an organization? The answers help you make a choice based on both protection scope and data handling rather than treating the most prominent setting as automatically right for everyone.
For readers who want the strongest built-in Chrome Safe Browsing option, Enhanced protection is the relevant setting. For readers who prefer not to share the additional information described by Google, Standard protection remains enabled by default and continues to provide phishing and malware warnings. The choice is a personal balance; the existence of Standard protection should not be described as having no protection, and Enhanced protection should not be described as complete protection.
Chrome’s setting and Google Account Enhanced Safe Browsing are separate controls
You can manage Chrome’s Safe Browsing level directly in Chrome Settings. Google also offers Enhanced Safe Browsing at the Google Account level, which can extend protection across Chrome and Gmail. The account feature turns on Chrome Enhanced protection when you are signed in to Chrome and Sync is enabled without a custom passphrase. Turning off account-level Enhanced Safe Browsing may take up to 24 hours to complete.
Because these controls have separate settings and conditions, changing one should not be assumed to change the other immediately or in every configuration. If you use the account-level option, check its own state as well as the Safe Browsing level shown in Chrome.

This distinction matters if you are troubleshooting an unexpected setting. The browser control governs the Safe Browsing level in Chrome Settings. The account-level feature has its own setting and can apply across Chrome and Gmail; its connection to Chrome Enhanced protection depends on being signed in and having Sync enabled without a custom passphrase. If you change the account option, allow for the stated delay of up to 24 hours when turning it off rather than expecting an immediate change everywhere.
How phishing protection differs in other Chromium browsers
Chromium is the browser project Chrome is based on; it does not mean every Chromium-derived browser has the same security provider, menu path, data practices or protection modes. In particular, do not look for Chrome’s Enhanced protection option in another browser unless that browser’s own documentation says it offers it.

Brave users should use the browser’s own Safe Browsing controls rather than searching for Chrome’s Enhanced protection switch. The fact that Brave relies on Chromium’s Safe Browsing implementation does not mean that it exposes every Chrome feature or sends information under the same settings. Use Brave’s help guidance to understand its available controls.

In Edge, SmartScreen is the relevant Microsoft phishing and malicious-download control. Its setting is under Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Security. Do not confuse it with Enhance your security on the web, which is a separate Edge feature. Balanced adds protections to unfamiliar sites; Strict applies them to all sites and may cause compatibility problems. If you are choosing a control specifically to address phishing warnings, SmartScreen and the separate web-security modes should not be treated as interchangeable names for one setting.

Verify the browser’s current instructions because both settings and available security services can differ by vendor.
If you cannot change the setting

The option is missing: Confirm you are in Chrome’s Security settings and look under Safe Browsing. Platform or release differences can change the labels or path.

The option is locked or unavailable: Check whether a workplace or school administrator manages the browser. Managed users may not be able to change phishing and malware protection.

You are using another Chromium browser: Look for that browser’s own Safe Browsing or phishing control instead of expecting Chrome’s Enhanced protection label. Its provider and privacy details may differ.

You changed the Google Account setting: Account-level Enhanced Safe Browsing and Chrome’s local Safe Browsing control are distinct. The account-level change may take up to 24 hours to turn off, and its Chrome integration depends on being signed in and having Sync enabled without a custom passphrase.
If you are using a managed computer, the setting may be controlled centrally rather than by your individual Chrome profile. In that case, being unable to select Enhanced protection does not necessarily mean the browser is broken; an administrator may have restricted the available choices. If you need a different protection level for work or school browsing, ask the administrator responsible for the browser instead of trying to bypass a managed control.

If you are in the right section but still cannot find the option, first confirm that you are using Google Chrome rather than a browser that only shares Chromium as its foundation. Then look for the exact Safe Browsing label in Chrome’s Security settings. Menu wording can vary across platforms and releases, and third-party browsers may have a different provider, different options or no Google Enhanced mode at all.

Enhanced protection adds proactive checks and warnings; it does not make it safe to ignore a suspicious address, enter a password on an unexpected page or open a download you do not trust. A warning is one layer of protection, not proof that every harmful page will be detected. No dated efficacy percentage is established for this setting, so it is not possible to give a reliable figure for how much it reduces phishing risk.

If that trade-off is not right for you, Chrome’s Standard protection still provides default phishing and malware warnings. Does Enhanced protection guarantee that Chrome will catch every phishing site?
No. It adds proactive checks and warnings, including for potentially risky sites, downloads and extensions, but no warning feature catches every threat. Treat it as one layer of protection, not a guarantee.
Can I turn on Chrome Enhanced protection in Brave?
