To enable Proton for Windows games in the Linux Steam client, open Steam → Settings → Steam Play (called Compatibility in some current clients), turn on Enable Steam Play for all other titles, choose a Proton tool, and apply the change or restart Steam if requested. This sets a default for titles without a more specific setting; it does not force native Linux builds or override a per-game choice.

What Steam Play and Proton do

Steam Play is Steam’s compatibility feature for running games built for Windows on Linux. Its main tool is Proton, a Valve-provided compatibility environment based on Wine and additional components. Steam supplies several Proton versions, and the client lets you select which one should be used as the default.

Enabling the global option is useful when your library contains Windows-only titles and you want Steam to try Proton automatically instead of requiring a setting on every game. The switch is a preference, not a guarantee: whether a title launches and behaves correctly still depends on the game and on your Linux graphics-driver support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam Play does not convert a game into a native Linux application. It asks Steam to run the Windows build through the selected compatibility tool. That distinction matters when a publisher also provides a Linux build, because Steam can continue to prefer that native build rather than applying the global Proton fallback.

What you need before changing the setting

  • A desktop installation of Steam running on Linux.
  • A game in your Steam library that has a Windows build or otherwise needs a compatibility tool.
  • A graphics driver that supports the game’s requirements. Valve notes that some newer games need cutting-edge drivers.
  • Permission to restart Steam if the client asks you to do so after changing compatibility settings.

You do not need a particular accessory, consumable, or hardware purchase just to enable Steam Play. Proton is delivered as software through Steam. Hardware and driver capability matter only when you try to run a specific game.

Before troubleshooting, note whether the title has a native Linux version, whether you have previously forced a compatibility tool for it, and which global Proton version is selected. Those details explain many apparent exceptions to the global setting.

Enable Steam Play globally

  1. Open Steam’s settings. Start the Steam desktop client, select Steam in the menu bar, and choose Settings.
  2. Open the compatibility page. Select Steam Play. Depending on the client version, the same area may be labeled Compatibility.
  3. Turn on the global option. Enable Enable Steam Play for all other titles. The wording refers to titles that do not already have a higher-priority compatibility decision.
  4. Choose the default tool. Use the compatibility-tool selector on that page to pick one of the Proton versions supplied by Steam.
  5. Apply the change. Close the settings window if the client applies changes immediately. If Steam prompts for a restart, restart it before launching a game.

After this, a Windows title without its own override can be launched through the selected Proton version. Steam may download the compatibility tool or other required game data the first time it is needed.

The checkbox affects the default used for eligible titles; it is not a command to rewrite every existing game configuration. If a game already has a manual choice, inspect that game’s Properties before concluding that Steam ignored the global setting.

Choosing a compatibility tool

The selector is a default, not a ranking of guaranteed performance. Valve provides multiple Proton builds because games and Linux systems can behave differently as the tool changes. The available list and labels can change with Steam updates.

Choice When it applies What it means
Native Linux build When the game includes a Linux version and Steam selects that build The game runs through its Linux executable rather than Proton. A global Proton preference does not automatically replace a native Linux build.
Global Proton default When the title has no per-game override and no native Linux build takes precedence Steam uses the Proton version selected in Steam Play/Compatibility settings.
Per-game Proton override When you force a tool in that game’s Properties The game uses the specifically selected tool instead of the global default.
Locally installed Proton build After you install an additional build in Steam’s compatibility-tools directory and restart Steam The local build appears in the selector and can be chosen globally or for an individual game.

There is no evidence that one Proton version is best for every title. Start with a Steam-supplied build, then change the setting only when a particular game’s behavior gives you a reason to test another available option.

When comparing two choices, use the same practical criteria each time: does the game launch, does it behave correctly after launching, which compatibility tool is actually selected, and does your graphics driver meet the game’s requirements? A different label alone is not proof that one build will work better.

What “all other titles” really means

The phrase in the checkbox is deliberately narrower than “force Proton on every game.” It establishes a fallback for games that do not have a more specific decision. A native Linux version can remain selected, and a per-game override can replace the global choice.

In a January 19, 2026 discussion in the ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux issue tracker, Valve contributor kisak-valve summarized the effective priority order as: “Per-game Steam Play override setting > Manual Valve pinning > Linux native games > Global Steam Play override setting.” In practical terms, the global switch is the lowest-priority preference in that order.

That order explains why “all” should be read as “all other titles without a higher-priority decision.” Manual Valve pinning can also affect what Steam selects, so the global selector is not necessarily the final authority for every library entry.

Why a native game may not use Proton

If Steam offers a native Linux build, the global Proton setting does not automatically override it. This avoids replacing a supported Linux executable merely because the fallback preference is enabled. If your goal is specifically to test Proton against a native build, use the game’s own compatibility setting rather than assuming the global checkbox will do it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why one game can behave differently from another

Each title can have different runtime requirements, and Steam can retain a manual compatibility choice for an individual game. Consequently, two Windows titles launched from the same Linux installation may use different Proton tools or produce different results even while the global setting is unchanged.

Force Proton for one game

Use a per-game setting when the global default is unsuitable, when you want to test a different Steam-provided Proton build, or when you need to make the game use Proton instead of its native Linux build.

  1. Open your Steam Library and locate the game.
  2. Right-click the game’s entry and choose Properties.
  3. Open the game’s Compatibility section.
  4. Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  5. Select the Proton version you want from the resulting selector.
  6. Close the Properties window and launch the game.

The exact labels can vary as Steam’s interface changes, but the important distinction is that this selector belongs to the game’s Properties, not the global Steam Play page. A per-game selection takes priority over the global default.

Compare native Linux and Proton for a title

When both builds are available, decide based on the result on your own system rather than on a universal ranking. The relevant questions are whether the game launches, whether it behaves correctly during play, which tool is selected, and whether your graphics driver meets the game’s requirements.

Question Native Linux build Proton build
Which executable is used? The game’s Linux build, when Steam provides one The Windows build through the selected Proton tool
Does the global checkbox select it? Not necessarily; native Linux precedence can keep it selected Yes, when no higher-priority per-game or native choice applies
Can you choose a different tool? Use the game’s compatibility settings if you need to force Proton Use the game’s Properties to select a specific Proton version
What should you verify? Launch and in-game behavior on your installation Launch, behavior, selected Proton version, and graphics-driver support

This comparison does not establish that Proton is faster, slower, or more reliable for every game. The available evidence supports choosing the build that works correctly on your configuration.

Check compatibility information and drivers

Enabling Steam Play does not make every Windows game compatible with Linux. Valve describes Proton as a way to run Windows-exclusive games on Linux, while its requirements guidance warns that some newer titles need current, cutting-edge graphics drivers.

  • Read the game’s compatibility information in Steam before treating a failed launch as a settings error.
  • Confirm that your installed graphics driver supports the game’s required graphics features and version.
  • Record which Proton tool is selected before changing it, so you can tell whether a change helped.
  • If the game has a native Linux build, test that build separately from a forced Proton configuration.

A successful toggle only proves that Steam will attempt to use the selected tool. It does not prove that the title will launch, that every feature will function, or that performance will match another operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot a game that will not launch

The game ignores the global setting

Open the game’s Properties and inspect its Compatibility section. A per-game selection can override the global preference, and a native Linux build can take precedence as well. Remove an unintended per-game override if you want the title to follow the global default.

The selected Proton version does not work

Return to the game’s Compatibility section and choose another Proton version that is available in Steam. If no per-game choice is required, you can instead change the global selector in Steam → Settings → Steam Play. Test one change at a time so you know which selection produced the new result.

The game fails after enabling Proton

Check the game’s compatibility information and verify the graphics driver. Some newer games require newer driver support, so the Proton setting alone may not address the failure. If the title includes a native Linux build, compare that build with the forced Proton configuration.

Steam does not show an installed local tool

Steam must discover local compatibility tools from ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/. Confirm that the Proton build is placed under that directory, then restart Steam. The client scans for the tool during startup; it will not necessarily appear in the selector immediately after you copy files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game changes tools after you edit the global setting

Check for a manual per-game selection first. Because per-game settings have higher priority, changing the global selector cannot replace that choice. Also check whether the title has a native Linux build or a manual Valve pinning decision that sits above the global preference.

Install a local Proton build (advanced)

Most users should use the Proton versions supplied by Steam. A local build is useful only when you have a specific reason to add another compatibility tool and understand how to maintain files outside Steam’s normal downloads.

  1. Obtain the local Proton build from a trustworthy source and keep its files together as that source specifies.
  2. Place the tool under ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/ in your Linux home directory.
  3. Fully restart the Steam client so it can detect the new directory entry.
  4. Open Steam → Settings → Steam Play (or Compatibility) and check the tool selector.
  5. Choose the local build globally or select it for one game in that game’s Properties → Compatibility page.

This is an advanced path. Steam-supplied builds are the recommended starting point because they are integrated with the client’s normal distribution and selection flow. A local build can disappear from consideration if its directory layout is wrong or if Steam has not been restarted.

Installing a local tool does not make it the default automatically. Discovery and selection are separate steps: Steam must find the files at startup, and you must then choose the build either on the global page or in a title’s Properties.

Change or undo the global setting

To change the default, return to Steam → Settings → Steam Play, select a different Proton tool, and apply or restart as prompted. To stop using Proton as a global fallback, clear Enable Steam Play for all other titles. Existing per-game compatibility choices remain separate, so inspect a game’s Properties if it continues using a forced tool after you disable the global option.

Because the global preference is only a fallback, disabling it does not necessarily change a title that has a manual per-game selection. Remove that game-specific choice if you want Steam to return to its normal native-or-default behavior.

Practical decision guide

Your situation Recommended action
You want Windows titles to try Proton automatically Enable Enable Steam Play for all other titles and choose a Steam-supplied Proton version.
A game already has a native Linux build Let Steam use the native build unless you have a specific reason to test Proton; use the game’s Properties to force Proton when needed.
One title fails with the global default Set a different Proton tool for that title in Properties → Compatibility.
A newer game refuses to launch Check its compatibility information and confirm that your graphics driver meets the game’s requirements.
You need an additional, non-Steam Proton build Install it under ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/, restart Steam, and then select it. Treat this as an advanced option.

Key points to remember

  • The setting path is Steam → Settings → Steam Play; some clients call the page Compatibility.
  • The checkbox is labeled Enable Steam Play for all other titles.
  • The global selection is a default, not an unconditional command to use Proton for every library item.
  • Per-game compatibility choices and native Linux builds can take precedence.
  • Proton support varies by game, and newer titles may require current graphics drivers.
  • Steam-provided Proton builds are the normal choice; local builds require the compatibility-tools directory and a Steam restart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does enabling Steam Play force every game to use Proton?

No. It sets a global fallback for titles without a higher-priority choice. A native Linux build, a manual Valve pinning decision, or a per-game compatibility override can take precedence.

Where is the Steam Play setting located?

In the desktop client, open Steam → Settings → Steam Play. Some current Steam clients label the same area Compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Proton version should I choose?

Start with a Proton build supplied by Steam. There is no universally best version; if a title has problems, test another available build from that game’s Properties → Compatibility page.

How do I force Proton for a game with a Linux version?

Open the game’s Library entry, choose Properties, open Compatibility, enable the option to force a specific Steam Play tool, and select a Proton version. The per-game setting overrides the global default and native selection.

Why does a game still use its old Proton version after I change the global selector?

The game may have a manual per-game override. Remove that forced selection if you want it to inherit the global setting. Native Linux builds and manual Valve pinning can also outrank the global preference.

Will enabling Proton make every Windows game work?

No. Proton is intended to run Windows-exclusive games on Linux, but compatibility varies by title. Some newer games also require current or cutting-edge graphics drivers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I add a local Proton build?

Place the build under ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/, fully restart Steam so it detects the files, then select the build in Steam Play/Compatibility or in a game’s Properties. This is an advanced option.

Do I need to buy hardware to enable Steam Play?

No. Proton is software delivered through Steam. Your existing hardware and graphics driver must meet the requirements of the particular game you want to run.

The Bottom Line

Open Steam → Settings → Steam Play (or Compatibility), enable Enable Steam Play for all other titles, and choose a Steam-supplied Proton build. Treat that choice as a fallback: native Linux versions and per-game settings can take priority. For a troublesome title, select another tool in Properties → Compatibility, and verify the game’s compatibility information and graphics-driver requirements.
