You can play compatible, installed Steam games without an internet connection, but Offline Mode must be prepared while Steam is online. Sign in with Remember me enabled, finish all client and game updates, launch every game you plan to use once online, allow Steam to save your credentials, then choose Steam > Go Offline. Close Steam normally before disconnecting.
Games that require a persistent connection or an external launcher will not work offline. Steam Cloud also stops synchronizing until you reconnect, so offline progress remains on the current computer and may require a deliberate sync choice later.
What Steam Offline Mode does
Steam’s official description is: “Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without having an active connection to the Steam Network.” In practice, Steam keeps enough sign-in and license information on the computer to start eligible games without contacting Steam’s servers.

Offline Mode is not a way to bypass a game’s own network requirement. It also does not emulate an internet connection for multiplayer services, anti-cheat checks, third-party account authentication, or launchers that must contact their own servers. The game must be installed, updated, and prepared before you disconnect.

The mode affects the Steam client as a whole. Features that need a live connection—such as the store, community pages, friends presence, downloads, workshop subscriptions, trading, and cloud synchronization—are unavailable until Steam is online again. Your installed files remain on the drive, and compatible single-player games can still run.
Offline Mode is a preparation workflow, not a setting you can reliably turn on for the first time after the internet has already disappeared.
Preparation checklist before going offline
Complete every item in this table during a successful online session. Skipping one can leave Steam or a game asking for information it cannot obtain later.

Step-by-step: prepare Steam Offline Mode
1. Sign in and keep the session remembered
Open Steam while you still have internet access. At the login window, select Remember me and complete the sign-in. If Steam is already showing a login request after you have lost connectivity, reconnect first; there is no supported way to bypass that request while disconnected.
2. Update Steam itself
Wait for Steam to finish any client update. If it asks to restart, allow the restart and sign in again. Do not begin the offline procedure while a client update is queued, paused, or waiting for a restart. A clean, current client reduces the chance that Steam will require an online step during the next launch.

3. Update every game you plan to use
Open your Library and let each intended game finish downloading and installing updates. Check the download activity rather than relying only on the text in the Library. A game can appear ready while Steam still needs to apply a patch, install a prerequisite, or complete another task.
If disk space is low, resolve that before disconnecting. An interrupted update can leave a game unable to start, and Offline Mode cannot download the missing files.

4. Launch each game once while online
Start each game from Steam while the connection is active. Wait until you reach the main menu or another clearly playable state, then exit the game normally. This first run can install runtimes, compile shaders, create configuration files, register local licenses, or open a one-time authentication window. Complete any setup or sign-in that appears while online.
Repeat the test for every game, even if several titles come from the same publisher. Their launchers and authentication behavior can differ. If a game displays an update prompt, an installation message, or an account error, fix it and launch again before proceeding.
5. Allow credential storage
With Steam still online, open Steam > Settings > Security. Confirm that Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected. This setting is separate from the Remember me box at sign-in: both must permit Steam to retain what it needs for an offline session.

6. Select Go Offline
Return to the main Steam window and choose Steam > Go Offline. Read the confirmation and accept it. Steam will restart or change state as necessary. When the client is in Offline Mode, its online-only sections will be unavailable; that is expected.

Use Steam’s normal exit command and wait for the application to close. Do not end the process in Task Manager, kill it from a terminal, or power off while it is still writing data. After Steam has closed cleanly, turn off Wi-Fi, unplug the network cable, or shut down for travel.
Playing an installed game with no internet
Start the computer without restoring a connection and open Steam. It should use the stored offline session. Open your Library, select a game that passed the online test, and choose Play. The game should start using its local files.
Menus that depend on Steam’s servers may be disabled, and multiplayer matchmaking will not work unless the game provides a separate local or LAN mode. Achievements, workshop downloads, community features, and other server-backed services may wait until you reconnect. Do not interpret a missing online feature as a failed offline installation.
If you have several Windows or user accounts on the same computer, use the account that performed the preparation. Offline authorization is tied to the stored Steam session and the local installation, not merely to the presence of the game files.

Which games work offline?
Evaluate a game on four practical questions before a trip: does it require a persistent connection, does it start an external launcher, can all first-run authentication and updates be completed in advance, and how does it save when Steam Cloud is unavailable?

No accessory changes these rules. A Steam Deck, Wi-Fi adapter, Ethernet cable, external SSD, controller, or printed manual cannot remove a game’s online or external-launcher requirement. The workflow requires no purchase.

Steam Cloud does not synchronize while Steam is offline. Saves created during the disconnected period remain on that computer until you reconnect. They are not automatically uploaded, downloaded, or merged while the network is unavailable.
When you later reconnect, Steam can detect that the local and cloud copies differ and show a synchronization choice. Read the dates and file locations in the prompt before accepting either version. Choosing the older cloud copy can discard progress made offline; choosing the local copy can replace the cloud copy on Steam’s servers. If the game has its own save-management screen, use it to make a backup before resolving a conflict.
Do not change computers and expect offline progress to appear there. Copying a game installation does not necessarily copy its saves, and cloud data cannot be fetched until the original computer reconnects and completes synchronization.

Troubleshooting common Offline Mode failures
Steam asks me to log in, but I have no internet
Reconnect to the internet and sign in successfully. Steam’s support guidance says there is no way to bypass a login request while disconnected. After signing in, verify Remember me, confirm that credential saving is allowed under Steam > Settings > Security, select Steam > Go Offline, and close Steam normally before trying again.
A game says it cannot be started in Offline Mode
- Reconnect the computer.
- Let Steam finish all client updates.
- Let the game finish its own update or installation tasks.
- Launch the game online and wait until it reaches a playable state.
- Exit the game normally, choose Steam > Go Offline, close Steam normally, and test again with the connection disabled.
If the message returns, the title may require a persistent connection or an external launcher. In that case, Offline Mode cannot make it playable.
The Library says “100% – Ready,” but the game still fails
The status describes the visible download state, not every requirement for an offline launch. Perform the connected test launch. Look for a first-run installer, a launcher update, an account prompt, or a license check. Complete each item online and repeat the offline test.

Steam would not enter Offline Mode during preparation
Restore a stable connection and retry. Check Steam’s server status, then test the local network with another device. A direct wired connection can help distinguish a wireless problem from a Steam-client problem. Review firewall permissions and temporarily investigate whether antivirus software, ad blockers, proxies, recording utilities, performance boosters, or other background programs are interfering with Steam’s connection. Re-enable protections and services after identifying the cause.
Offline play worked, but a later launch fails
Reconnect periodically. Steam and games continue to receive client, content, security, and compatibility updates while you are online; Offline Mode cannot deliver them. After updating, launch the game once online again before your next disconnected session. If the computer was force-shut down or Steam was terminated, repeat the normal exit and offline preparation steps.
My offline progress is missing after reconnecting
Check whether Steam displayed a cloud-conflict prompt and which copy was selected. The offline save is local until synchronization completes. If you accepted the cloud version, the local progress may have been replaced. Avoid starting the game repeatedly until you have reviewed the available local and cloud copies and made a backup where the game supports one.
Returning to online mode safely
Restore the network connection before opening Steam if you need updates, cloud synchronization, or online services. Start Steam and allow it to reconnect. Let pending downloads finish, then review any Steam Cloud conflict carefully instead of clicking through it automatically.
After synchronization, launch games that failed or behaved differently offline while connected. This confirms whether the cause was a temporary offline limitation, an outdated file set, or a permanent online requirement. Before another trip, repeat the preparation checklist for any game that received an update.
