Valheim does not use a server-wide PvP switch in the available server controls. Player-versus-player combat is controlled individually through the in-game Friendly Fire toggle. To enable it, press Tab to open your inventory, select the crossed-swords icon in the upper-right corner, and look for the message “Friendly Fire Enabled”. The other player must enable the same setting on their own character before either of you can damage the other.
This setting applies only to the player who changes it. It does not turn on building damage, reveal players on the map, or change other world rules. Because dying to another player drops your entire inventory and removes active food and potion buffs, agree on the rules and secure valuable equipment before testing.
What “enable PvP” means in Valheim
Valheim calls its player-combat control Friendly Fire. It is a character-level toggle rather than a permission that a server administrator applies to everyone. A player can therefore join a shared world or dedicated server with Friendly Fire disabled, enable it for a fight, and later disable it again without changing the setting for anyone else.
There is no PvP switch in the server controls described here
Dedicated-server launch parameters control world rules such as difficulty, combat strength, death penalties and raids. The available information does not identify a launch argument that turns PvP on or off for the entire server. That is an absence in the documented search results, not proof that no future version could add one. If you administer a server and need a global rule, consult Iron Gate’s current Dedicated Server Manual for the game version you run rather than assuming that a parameter such as -preset controls Friendly Fire.

Both participants must opt in
Friendly Fire is effectively a two-player handshake. The attacker must have the swords crossed, and the intended target must also have Friendly Fire enabled. If only one player has enabled the setting, neither player can damage the other. This prevents an opted-out player from being attacked simply because someone else changed their own toggle.
Enable Friendly Fire step by step
1. Open your inventory
- Enter the Valheim world and make sure your character is loaded.
- Press Tab to open the inventory screen.
The control is shown in the inventory interface, not in the dedicated-server console or a separate world-creation menu.
2. Select the crossed-swords icon
- Look in the upper-right area of the inventory screen for the icon showing two swords.
- Click the icon once so the swords cross.
- Confirm the on-screen message: “Friendly Fire Enabled”.
The confirmation message is the practical indication that your character is now opted in. If the icon does not appear in the expected location, check that you are using the current game client and that the inventory is fully open; interface labels and icon placement can change with patches.
3. Have the other player repeat the process
Ask the player you intend to fight to open their own inventory with Tab, click the same two-swords control, and confirm “Friendly Fire Enabled”. You cannot activate Friendly Fire for another person from your inventory, and changing a server launch option does not substitute for the second player’s opt-in.

4. Test with low-value equipment
Move away from storage chests and valuable building materials before testing. Use a controlled area, agree on who will make the first attack, and keep recovery supplies nearby. A test confirms that both players have opted in without risking an important expedition’s equipment.
5. Turn it off when the fight is over
- Open the inventory again with Tab.
- Click the crossed-swords icon so the swords are no longer crossed.
- Check for “Friendly Fire Disabled”.
Disabling the setting affects only your character. If several people are playing, each person who wants protection must disable Friendly Fire on their own inventory screen.

What the toggle changes—and what it does not
It changes damage between opted-in players
With both characters opted in, attacks can damage the other player. The toggle is therefore useful for consensual duels, training sessions, arena events and group rules that allow combat. The setting belongs to the character who changes it; it is not a server permission that an administrator can silently impose on everyone.
It does not alter building damage
Enabling Friendly Fire does not change the rules for damaging structures or other player-built objects. If your goal is to permit raids against bases or to protect buildings from weapons, this toggle is not the setting you are looking for.

It does not reveal players on the map
The Friendly Fire control also does not change map visibility. Turning it on will not automatically show another player’s position or make their marker appear. Map-sharing choices remain separate from the combat toggle.
Death and equipment risks in PvP
Dying to another player has the normal severe survival consequences described for Valheim PvP: your entire inventory drops, and food and potion buffs are removed. Treat a duel as a real death, not as a harmless damage test.
Prepare before enabling combat
- Carry only equipment you are willing to recover if the test goes badly.
- Store irreplaceable materials and spare gear in a secure location.
- Eat and drink with the understanding that active food and potion effects will be lost if you die.
- Agree on a recovery plan: who will guard the drop, who may retrieve it, and whether combat stops after a death.
- Use a clearly marked arena or open area so dropped items are not confused with ordinary storage.
After a death
The defeated player must recover the dropped inventory and rebuild the lost food and potion effects. Do not assume that disabling Friendly Fire after a death restores buffs or returns items automatically; the toggle only changes whether that character can participate in player damage.
Dedicated-server launch settings and PvP
Valheim dedicated servers receive world and rule configuration through launch parameters. The parameters identified for server configuration include -preset, -modifier and -setkey. They are associated with settings such as difficulty, combat strength, death penalties and raids.

Do not add an invented -pvp, -friendlyfire or similar argument to a startup command. An unknown argument may be ignored or may prevent the server from starting, and it will not replace each player’s in-game opt-in. For a server-wide policy, check the current Dedicated Server Manual from Iron Gate and confirm that its instructions match the client and server versions you operate.
How to run a controlled PvP session
Choose a clear rule set
Before anyone crosses the swords, decide whether combat is limited to an arena, allowed everywhere, or restricted to consenting pairs. Since the game does not provide a server-wide Friendly Fire switch through the controls described here, community rules are important when several players share a world.

Build or select a location away from valuable storage, farms and active construction. Keep the staging area easy to find and agree on where dropped inventories will be returned. Friendly Fire does not alter building damage, so separating the arena from important structures also reduces accidental property damage from ordinary gameplay.
Confirm both players visually and verbally
Each participant should report seeing “Friendly Fire Enabled” after clicking the icon. This avoids a common false diagnosis in which one player has opted in and the other has not. If the test fails, repeat the confirmation rather than changing unrelated server parameters.

End the session cleanly
When the event ends, every participant should open the inventory and select the swords again until “Friendly Fire Disabled” appears. Make this part of the event procedure, especially if players will continue a normal cooperative expedition afterward.
Troubleshooting: when PvP does not work
The other player takes no damage
- Have both players open their inventories and verify that each saw “Friendly Fire Enabled”.
- Check that one player did not click the icon again and turn the setting off.
- Confirm that the attack is aimed at the other character rather than a structure or object; Friendly Fire does not govern building damage.
- Move to a safe, open test area and repeat with equipment that is not valuable.
The most important check is the two-player requirement. If one person is disabled, the game prevents the pair from damaging each other.
The icon or message is missing
- Press Tab while actively in the world, then inspect the upper-right portion of the inventory interface.
- Make sure you are looking for the two-swords control, not a server-console setting.
- Allow for interface changes introduced by a game update; labels and icon placement are volatile facts and can differ between versions.
If the control remains unavailable, compare the client version with the server’s supported version and consult current official game documentation. Do not assume that a missing icon can be fixed by adding an undocumented launch parameter.
A player died and lost more than expected
Player death drops the entire inventory and removes food and potion buffs. Recovering the inventory does not automatically recreate those effects. Replenish food and potions before returning to combat, and revise the group’s equipment policy if the loss was accidental.
Players expect building or map behavior to change
Friendly Fire affects player-to-player damage only. It does not enable attacks against buildings and does not reveal player locations on the map. Use the game’s separate building, ward, map and world-rule systems for those goals.
Server-owner checklist
- Tell players that PvP is an individual Friendly Fire choice, not a server-wide switch in the controls covered here.
- Publish the exact procedure: Tab, click the two swords, verify “Friendly Fire Enabled”.
- Require both participants to opt in before a fight.
- Explain that a PvP death drops the whole inventory and removes food and potion buffs.
- Keep arena rules separate from building protection and map visibility rules.
- Review
-preset,-modifierand-setkeyonly for the world rules they are documented to control. - Check Iron Gate’s current Dedicated Server Manual before relying on any claimed global PvP parameter.
- Ask players to disable Friendly Fire after the event and verify the disabled message.
Version and terminology notes
“PvP” is the community shorthand; the in-game control is labeled Friendly Fire. The instructions above use the inventory path and messages documented for the current interface described here. Game updates can move controls or change wording, so treat the icon’s location and exact labels as version-sensitive. The underlying behavior—individual opt-in, a second player’s opt-in requirement, and the separation from building damage and map visibility—should be checked against the documentation for the specific client and server versions in use.
