To enable player-versus-player combat, stop the Palworld dedicated server, edit the active PalWorldSettings.ini, set bIsPvP=True, bEnablePlayerToPlayerDamage=True, and bEnableDefenseOtherGuildPlayer=True, then save and restart. All three switches are required together; changing only one or editing the default template will not activate PvP.
What enabling PvP actually does
Palworld’s PvP mode is broader than a player-damage toggle. Pocketpair documents it as a trial feature, and official support does not cover it. Activating the mode changes combat, base defense, loot access, building rules and missions across the server, so tell players what rules they are joining before opening the server.

- Base Pals attack hostile players who trespass into a base.
- Airborne players and ride Pals receive increased damage.
- Damage dealt by players to summoned Pals and base Pals is reduced.
- Players can open chests owned by other guilds.
- Melee damage against structures built by other players is reduced.
- Base Pals detect and engage enemies across a wider area.
- The minimum distance between bases increases.
- The distance at which player names and damage numbers appear changes.
- A notification is sent when a base is attacked; building and repairing inside that base are disabled while the battle is active.
- Some weapons use PvP-specific range and damage tuning.
- Missions are disabled.
Because these effects are coupled to the PvP mode, enabling only player damage while leaving the other switches off is not a supported configuration.
Before you edit the server
- Have administrator or file-system access to the machine running the dedicated server.
- Know whether the server is using the WindowsServer or LinuxServer configuration directory.
- Stop the server cleanly before opening the settings file. A running server can overwrite your edits when it shuts down or saves.
- Plan a maintenance window, because every connected player will be disconnected during the restart.
- Keep a copy of the current configuration so you can restore the previous rules if the new settings are not suitable.
Find the active PalWorldSettings.ini
The file that controls the running server is PalWorldSettings.ini in the platform-specific Pal/Saved/Config directory. Do not rely on a similarly named template elsewhere in the installation.

If the directory or file is missing
Start the dedicated server once, allow it to finish creating its save and configuration directories, and stop it again. Pocketpair’s setup documentation says those directories are created after startup. If the active file still does not exist, copy DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini into the appropriate WindowsServer or LinuxServer directory and name the copy PalWorldSettings.ini before editing it.
Important: editing DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini itself does not apply settings to an existing server. It is a template; the server reads the platform-specific PalWorldSettings.ini.

Enable PvP step by step
- Stop the server. Use the service manager, hosting panel, or console command you normally use for a clean shutdown. Wait until the process has exited.
- Open the active file. Use the WindowsServer or LinuxServer path for the installation that actually launches your server. If you operate more than one instance, verify the executable and save directory belong to the same instance.
- Locate the settings line. The file normally contains a long
OptionSettings=(...)entry. Edit the existing option values rather than creating a second conflicting settings line. - Set all three required switches to
True. Use the exact spelling and capitalization shown here:bIsPvP=True bEnablePlayerToPlayerDamage=True bEnableDefenseOtherGuildPlayer=True - Save the file as plain text. Keep the
.iniextension. Do not save an additional.txtsuffix, and do not add quotation marks aroundTrue. - Start the dedicated server again. The new values are read during startup; changing the file while the process is running does not apply them to the current session.
- Test with two players. Have players from the same or different guilds join, perform a controlled attack, and confirm that damage is registered. Also test a base boundary and a chest belonging to another guild so you verify the broader PvP rules rather than only the damage switch.
Recommended controls for a playable ruleset
The three switches turn the feature on, but they do not decide whether a server feels fair. Pocketpair lists the following controls as examples administrators can adopt or adjust. Treat them as separate decisions: a server can allow combat without using every restriction below.

Choose the rules before you publish the server
There is no single best PvP configuration. Decide the following axes explicitly and document the choices in your server description or welcome message.

Verify that PvP is working
- Check the active file after saving and confirm all three required keys are present with exact
Truevalues. - Restart the server rather than merely reloading a hosting-panel page.
- Join with two separate clients. Use a safe test location and agree which player will attack first.
- Confirm that the target’s health changes when struck.
- Enter a base owned by another guild and observe whether its base Pals react.
- Check that a chest owned by another guild is accessible under the enabled rules.
- Test a structure attack, a death drop and a respawn only if those behaviors are part of your published ruleset.
- Record the results and keep the tested configuration as a backup.
Why PvP is not working
The file has only one or two PvP keys
PvP requires bIsPvP, bEnablePlayerToPlayerDamage and bEnableDefenseOtherGuildPlayer together. Add any missing key to the active settings entry and set its value to True. Check spelling, capitalization and punctuation.
You edited the wrong file
Changes to DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini alone do nothing. Reopen the platform-specific PalWorldSettings.ini under Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer or Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer, depending on the running server.

The server was never restarted
The dedicated server reads the options during startup. Stop it, save the file while the process is down, and start it again. If a control panel reports a restart but the old process remains, verify that the process actually exited before launching a new instance.

The configuration directory does not exist
Start the server once to let it create its save and configuration directories, then stop it. Copy the default template into the newly created platform directory as PalWorldSettings.ini and apply the three switches.
Player damage works but other behavior seems unchanged
Some effects are conditional. Base-Pal defense requires an enemy to trespass into a base; chest access concerns chests owned by another guild; attack notifications and construction lockouts occur during a base battle. Test each behavior under its triggering condition instead of treating a single result as proof that the entire mode failed.
Players report unexpected losses or restrictions
Review the optional controls, especially DeathPenalty=All, bCanPickupOtherGuildDeathPenaltyDrop=True, bExistPlayerAfterLogout=True, technology restrictions and respawn penalties. These are independent balance choices and can make a server feel much harsher than the three activation switches alone.
Operational cautions
Keep dated backups of PalWorldSettings.ini before every rules change. Announce maintenance and explain death-drop, logout, technology and guild-cap rules in advance. Because Pocketpair labels PvP a trial feature outside official support, expect to diagnose configuration problems yourself and be prepared to disable the mode by restoring the previous file and restarting the server.
