Enable player-versus-player combat for a Hytale world with the operator command /world config pvp true, or set the PvP value in that world’s config.json. PvP is configured per world, not once for the entire server. The command is the fastest option; editing the world file is better when you are preparing an offline or repeatable configuration.
What you need to know before changing PvP
Hytale server PvP is a world-level setting. A server can contain several worlds with different combat rules, so changing one world does not automatically enable PvP in another. Identify the exact world that players join before running a command or editing a file.

config.json, then restart it. - Permissions: community host guides say the command requires operator (OP) status. This requirement has not been confirmed by an official Hytale documentation page.
As of October 14, 2026, no official Hytale documentation page confirming the server configuration schema was available. The procedures below reflect community host guides and may change after game updates. Treat the structure already present in your own world file as authoritative for that server version.
Method 1: Enable PvP with the in-game command
Use the command when you have access to the server console or an in-game account with operator privileges. It avoids file access and normally takes effect without stopping the server.

Run the command for the current world
- Join the Hytale world in which combat should be allowed, or open the server console.
- Confirm that your account has operator privileges. If the command is rejected, ask an existing administrator to grant OP status or run it from the server console.
- Enter
/world config pvp trueand submit it. - Test with two players in that same world. Check that attacks are permitted and that the result is not being blocked by a separate region, role, or gameplay rule.
The command changes the PvP setting for the world targeted by the command. It is not a global switch for every world hosted by the same server process.
Target a named world explicitly
When the server has multiple worlds, use the world flag shown in community documentation:

Keep the spelling, capitalization, underscores, and hyphens consistent with the name recognized by your server. If the command reports that the world cannot be found, first verify the world name in the server’s world list or console output rather than changing the PvP syntax.
Why the command is useful
- There is no need to locate or edit a JSON file.
- You can apply the setting while the server is running.
- It is convenient for testing PvP before committing a permanent file change.
The command still depends on the server accepting the syntax in your installed Hytale build and on your account having sufficient permissions. Community guides are not an official schema reference, so record the resulting behavior and verify it in the target world.

Method 2: Enable PvP in the world configuration file
Use a file edit when you are setting up a server before players connect, managing a configuration through backups, or need the setting to be restored consistently after a restart. Stop the server first. One community guide warns that editing while the server is running can be ignored or can interfere with the saved world data.
Find the correct file
- Stop the Hytale server cleanly and wait for the process to exit.
- Open the world directory under
universe/worlds/. - For the default world, open
universe/worlds/default/config.json. - If the world was renamed, replace
defaultwith that world’s folder name. - Create a backup copy of
config.jsonbefore changing it.
Do not edit the server’s root config.json for this task. Community documentation describes the root file as the place for server-wide options such as the server name, password, and player cap. PvP belongs to the individual world configuration.
Locate the PvP setting already used by your file
Several community guides show different layouts. The most commonly reported key is a top-level IsPvpEnabled property, often alongside a setting such as IsFallDamageEnabled:

}Other guides show a different arrangement involving "GameplayConfig": "Default". Reports have also described a nested "WorldConfig" object containing "PvP": true, or a top-level lowercase "pvp": true. These layouts have not been reconciled against an official Hytale schema.
For that reason, do not add several differently named PvP keys “just in case.” Match the naming, capitalization, nesting, and formatting that are already present in the file generated by your Hytale version. If no PvP property is present, make a backup and consult documentation for the exact server build or use the operator command instead of guessing a new schema.

JSON is strict. Use the Boolean value true without quotation marks; "true" is text, not a Boolean. Keep double quotes around property names, put commas between properties, and do not leave a trailing comma after the final property.

Use a JSON-aware editor or validator before restarting. A missing comma, an extra comma, an unmatched brace, or smart quotation marks can prevent the server from reading the file.

Restart and verify
- Save the edited file in the same world directory and filename.
- Start the server and watch the console for configuration or JSON parsing errors.
- Join the world whose file you changed.
- Test combat with another player and confirm that both players are in the intended world.
- If the server starts but PvP remains off, stop it again and recheck the key’s location and spelling against the original file structure.

If you are unsure which configuration layout your build uses, the command is the lower-risk first test. Once the behavior is confirmed, inspect the resulting world configuration after a clean shutdown and document the format used by your installation.

The command says you do not have permission
The account probably is not an operator, or the command was entered by a player without administrative rights. Have an existing administrator run it from the console or grant the appropriate OP permission. Because the OP requirement comes from community host instructions rather than an official reference, permission names and administration commands may differ between server builds.
The command succeeds, but players still cannot fight
- Check that you changed the world players are actually visiting. PvP is per world.
- If there are multiple worlds, repeat the command with the explicit
--world=selector. - Confirm that both test players are in the same world; a hub, lobby, or separate instance can have different settings.
- Look for another gameplay, region, role, or protection system that blocks damage independently of the world PvP flag.
- Leave and re-enter the world, then test again, in case the client was already holding the previous world state.
The edited file is ignored
The server may have been running when the edit was made, or the file may not belong to the world being tested. Stop the server, verify the path, and confirm that the folder name matches the target world. Check that your editor saved the file as config.json rather than appending an extension such as .txt.
The server fails to start after the edit
Restore the backup to get the server running, then validate the modified file. Common causes are an omitted comma, mismatched braces, smart quotes, a duplicate property, or an incorrectly nested value. Make one change at a time and keep the original file until the server has started successfully.

The file has no key that matches the examples
Do not assume that a lowercase pvp, a nested WorldConfig object, or IsPvpEnabled is universally supported. Community guides report all of these forms, and no official schema was available to resolve the conflict as of October 14, 2026. Use the command for the immediate change, preserve a backup, and seek build-specific documentation before inserting a new property into a production world file.
Managing PvP safely on a multi-world server
Plan PvP as a per-world policy. A common arrangement is to keep a protected hub or building world with PvP disabled and enable it only in a dedicated combat or survival world. Since the setting does not automatically propagate, record the intended value for every world and apply changes one world at a time.

- List each world and its folder or recognized command name.
- Decide which worlds allow player damage.
- Use the explicit world selector for command-based changes.
- Back up each world’s configuration before file edits.
- Test from an ordinary player account, not only from an OP account.
Testing with a non-operator matters because administrative privileges can change what a player is allowed to do and can hide a permission problem that ordinary players would encounter.
How to disable PvP again
Reverse either method for the same world. With command access, set the value to false:
/world config pvp falseFor a named world, use the corresponding selector:
/world config pvp false --world=your_world_nameFor a file-based configuration, stop the server and change the existing PvP Boolean from true to false, preserving the key’s original name and nesting. Restart and test in that world. Do not delete the property merely to disable PvP; retaining the recognized key with a false value makes the intended state explicit.
Version and configuration caveats
Hytale server configuration can change as the game and hosting tools evolve. The command syntax, permission model, world directory layout, and JSON key names described by community guides may not remain identical across releases. Keep a dated backup of a working configuration, note the Hytale server version beside it, and recheck the generated file after an upgrade.
The safest general rule is to trust the structure your own server creates: edit the existing world file rather than copying a snippet from a different release, and use the operator command when you need a quick, reversible test. If a later update regenerates the file, verify that the PvP state still matches your intended policy in every world.
