To enable Rust’s built-in PvE setting, add server.pve true to the server configuration, save it, restart the server, and run server.pve in the server console. A successful check returns true. The setting also applies the PvE server-browser tag automatically.
This switch is deliberately broad. It does not provide a documented rule editor for separate raiding permissions, access to other players’ containers, or mixed PvP and PvE zones. If your community needs exceptions or per-damage rules, run a supported Oxide or Carbon server build and use the TruePVE plugin instead.
What you need before changing the server
You need administrative access to the machine or hosting control panel that runs the Rust server, permission to edit its configuration, and a maintenance window for a restart. The exact directory and interface depend on the host. There is no single universal path that is safe to publish for every installation.
- Identify whether your host exposes the files directly, provides a text editor, or offers a Server Config panel.
- Confirm that you are editing the configuration for the correct server identity, not a test instance or a different map.
- Warn connected players that the server will restart and that they should log out safely.
- Keep a copy of the current configuration before changing it so you can restore the previous state if the host rewrites the file.
Enable the built-in PvE setting
Option 1: Edit server.cfg
- Open the server’s configuration area. On hosted installations this is commonly a
cfgfolder below the directory for the server identity, but the location varies by provider. - Open
server.cfg. A newly created server may not have this file yet. If the panel shows no file, use its New file or equivalent command and name the fileserver.cfg. - Add this line on its own line:
server.pve true. Use the spelling and punctuation exactly as shown;server.pvemodeis a different name reported by one guide and is not the convar used by the official tag documentation and the other hosting guides. - Save the file without adding quotation marks around the value. Do not place the setting in a client configuration file.
- Restart the Rust server from the host control panel or the service manager. The change is read when the server starts, so editing the file while the process is running is not enough.
Option 2: Use a host’s Server Config panel
Some providers generate server.cfg for you. Open the panel’s server settings, find the commented line labelled PvE Mode, and enable or uncomment it. If the panel presents a key-and-value form instead, set the server.pve key to true. Save the panel form and restart the instance. Panel labels differ, so use the convar name as the reliable identifier rather than the wording of a button.

Verify the setting after the restart
- Open the live Rust server console supplied by your host. This is the server console, not the in-game F1 console of an ordinary player.
- Enter
server.pveand submit it without a value. - Read the returned value. It should be
true. If it reportsfalse, the server loaded a different configuration, the panel overwrote the file, or the setting was not saved. - Join with a test account and check the server listing. The PvE tag should be present without manually adding a PvE value to
server.tags.
The console check confirms the convar currently loaded by the process. It does not, by itself, prove every combat interaction on your particular Rust build, plugin stack, or map behaves as your community expects. Perform a short in-game test before announcing the rules.
What built-in PvE changes
server.pve is the native, coarse switch. It is useful when the goal is a broadly non-player-versus-player server and you do not need exceptions. The official Server Browser Tags documentation says that enabling it applies the PvE tag automatically; the separate server.tags setting accepts comma-separated tags, but you do not need to add PvE yourself.

Hosting guides describe the built-in mode as lacking fine-grained controls for those cases. Treat the result as a broad mode, not as a permissions system.

- You want one broad PvE policy for the whole server.
- You can accept that the native mode does not expose separate controls for raids, containers, or mixed zones.
- You prefer the smallest possible change and do not want to maintain a modded server build.
- Your host permits ordinary configuration edits and restarts.
It is a good starting point for a cooperative community, a private server, or a test environment where a single global mode is more valuable than elaborate exceptions. Document the rule in your server welcome message, then test representative interactions with trusted players because the exact behavior can change with Rust updates.
When to use TruePVE instead
Choose TruePVE when the server needs rules such as “players cannot damage players, but players can damage NPCs,” protected monuments, designated PvP arenas, or different permissions for specific entities. TruePVE is a plugin-based rules layer recommended by hosting guides for defining exactly what can damage what.

The table describes the setup trade-off, not a promise that every TruePVE configuration is safe by default. A plugin gives you more control only after you define and test its rules.
TruePVE setup outline
- Check with the host whether the server can run an Oxide or Carbon build. If the host locks the build, you may need a different plan or provider.
- Back up the current world and configuration. A framework change is a larger operational change than adding one convar.
- Switch to the supported Oxide or Carbon server build using the host’s documented installer or build selector.
- Start the server once and confirm that the framework creates its directories. Stop it again before copying files if the host requires a stopped service for file changes.
- Upload the TruePVE plugin to the framework’s plugins folder, commonly the
oxide/pluginsdirectory on an Oxide installation. Carbon hosts may expose an equivalent plugin location; follow that host’s path rather than assuming the Oxide layout. - Start the server and watch the server console for the plugin load result. A load error usually means an incompatible framework version, a malformed file, or a missing dependency.
- Configure the plugin’s rules for the interactions your community actually wants. Start with a narrow test policy, then add exceptions one at a time.
- Test player-versus-player damage, player-versus-NPC damage, building and deployable damage, raiding-related interactions, and any protected areas before opening the server to the public.
- Record the active framework and plugin versions in your administration notes so an update can be rolled back deliberately.
TruePVE’s advantage is control, not automatic correctness. The plugin configuration is where your policy lives; review it after Rust, Oxide, or Carbon updates and after adding any other plugin that can alter damage or permissions.

Test the result instead of assuming it
Because official pages do not provide a complete combat specification for server.pve, use a controlled test server or a temporary protected area. Have two administrators use disposable equipment and test one interaction at a time. Record what the server actually permits on the current build, then publish only those tested rules.
- Confirm that two players cannot perform the interactions your policy intends to block.
- Confirm that useful PvE activities, such as fighting permitted NPCs and harvesting, still work.
- Check building, deployables, doors, storage, vehicles, and other objects that matter to your community.
- If you run a plugin, test both the default rule and every exception you added.
- Repeat the smoke test after a Rust update, a framework update, or a plugin update.
Do not infer a rule from the browser tag. The tag describes how the server is advertised; it is not a detailed audit of every action a player can perform.

Troubleshooting common failures
The console returns false
Check that the line is in the configuration for the active server identity, that the value is exactly true, and that the file was saved before the restart. Some panels regenerate configuration files from their own forms; in that case, make the change in the panel rather than editing a generated file. Run the console check again after the process has fully started.
The console says the command is unknown
Make sure you are in the Rust server console and not a client command prompt. Recheck the spelling: the documented convar is server.pve. A guide that uses server.pvemode is not using the name confirmed by the Facepunch tag documentation and the other hosting instructions. If the correct command still fails, check the Rust build and host documentation before trying aliases.

The server does not show a PvE tag
Verify the convar after a restart. Do not try to compensate by adding a manually invented tag to server.tags; the native setting is supposed to apply the PvE tag. If the console reports true but the listing is stale, allow the browser listing time to refresh and confirm that you are viewing the same server instance you edited.
Players can still perform an interaction you expected to be blocked
The native switch is not documented as a complete permissions engine. First reproduce the behavior on a clean test instance, then inspect loaded plugins and the current Rust build. If you need an explicit allow or deny rule, move to a tested TruePVE configuration rather than adding random multipliers from an unverified guide.
The host will not let you install Oxide or Carbon
That is a hosting limitation, not a syntax error. Keep the native mode if its broad behavior is acceptable, ask the provider whether a mod-capable plan or build is available, or choose a host that explicitly supports the framework you require. Do not upload framework files to a locked installation and assume they will load.
The setting disappears after every restart
Compare the saved file with the generated configuration after startup. A control panel may overwrite manual edits, or you may be editing a template rather than the live file. Use the panel’s own PvE control when available, save it, restart, and verify the loaded value in the console.

Do not confuse PvE with a separate gamemode
Rust’s server gamemode controls are documented separately from the PvE convar. Facepunch’s gamemode documentation describes selecting a gamemode with +server.gamemode; that is not a replacement spelling for server.pve. The same documentation notes that official Hardcore mode servers were shut down in November 2023. That historical note does not establish a current official PvE gamemode, so use the convar or a rules plugin for the behavior you want.
Administrator checklist
- Back up the active configuration and note the server identity.
- Set
server.pvetotruein the live configuration or the host’s Server Config panel. - Save and restart the server.
- Run
server.pvein the server console and confirmtrue. - Confirm that the browser lists the PvE tag automatically.
- Run a controlled interaction test on the current Rust build.
- Publish only the rules you observed and can support.
- For zones, exceptions, or explicit damage relationships, migrate to a tested Oxide or Carbon installation with TruePVE.
Keeping the configuration current
Convar names and behavior can change with Rust updates. The Facepunch Server Browser Tags page is useful context for the automatic tag, but the page was reported to be roughly 1,231 days old as of October 14, 2026. Treat that age as a reason to recheck the current official documentation and your live server after updates, not as proof that a particular combat rule remains unchanged.
