There is no single parental-control setting that blocks every live stream. Link a parent account to the child’s account where possible, then configure viewing, communication, and broadcasting separately on each service. Add console-level limits for devices the child uses, and check what each control actually covers: age gates and content labels can reduce exposure, but they do not guarantee that every live stream is filtered.
Start by separating watching, chatting, and going live
“Restrict live streams” can mean several different things: stop a child from broadcasting, limit the live content they can discover, prevent messages from strangers, or restrict the apps and features available on a device. These are separate controls. A setting that limits chat does not necessarily hide streams; a device time limit does not decide what a child can watch while the device is available.
Make a short inventory before changing settings. Include services the child uses directly, apps opened on a shared console, and any secondary or older accounts. Then decide, for each account, whether the child may watch live content, participate in someone else’s stream, broadcast, or use chat and direct messages. Configure each decision separately rather than assuming one age setting covers them all.

- Viewing: Look for content restrictions, discovery controls, or age settings. Their scope varies by platform and may not amount to a universal live-stream block.
- Communication: Review live chat, in-experience chat, direct messages, and contact permissions independently of content settings.
- Broadcasting: Check whether the service provides a control to prevent the child from starting a stream. A rule about appearing in a stream is not necessarily a viewing restriction.
- Device access: Use console family controls for game ratings, playtime, communication, and browser access, while treating them as an additional layer rather than a filter for all third-party streams.
Use the child’s real age and the correct account type when setting up supervision. Age-based permissions can differ by jurisdiction and may change. After setting limits, review them with the child and verify which account is signed in on each device.

What the platform controls cover
The controls below address different parts of the problem. Check the platform’s current in-app labels as you set them up; menus can move, and a control’s name alone does not establish that it blocks all live content.

Set up Twitch Family Center
Twitch says its service is for people aged 13 and up. A person below the local age of majority may use it only under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian. The parent creates a Twitch account, and the teen requests a link to it; once the accounts are linked, the parent can open Family Center. Follow the current in-app labels because navigation names may change. Twitch’s guide for parents and educators describes the available family tools.
- Create or use the parent account. Have the parent or guardian sign in to Twitch.
- Link the teen account. The teen requests the account link, and the parent completes the linking process. Do not assume that controls on the parent account automatically govern an unlinked teen account.
- Open Family Center. Review the linked teen account and the current available controls.
- Decide whether the teen may broadcast. Use the option that restricts the teen’s ability to go live if the goal is to prevent them from starting a broadcast.
- Set viewing and contact limits separately. Adjust discovery using Content Classification Labels and decide whether to disable Whispers. These address different risks: discovery and private messaging.
- Choose a daily screen-time limit and review activity. Twitch’s weekly summaries can include channels watched, people messaged, blocked users, money spent, and daily stream or watch time.
The ability-to-go-live restriction concerns the teen’s own broadcasts. Content Classification Labels relate to discovery; they should not be treated as proof that all unsuitable live content is blocked. The activity summary can help a parent understand account use, but it is not a substitute for choosing the underlying limits.

Understand YouTube’s live-stream rule
YouTube’s published live-streaming rule is about participation, not a general restriction on viewing. It says that a person under 16 who participates in a live stream from an account owned by an adult must have the adult visibly present in the stream. A delegated adult can start a stream from Live Control Room, but must also be visibly present and participate. See YouTube Help’s live-streaming guidance for the rule and its channel context.
That policy does not provide parents with a switch that blocks every live stream their child might watch. Keep the distinctions clear when setting expectations: a rule about appearing in an adult-owned account’s stream is not a viewing filter, and it does not itself set device-level parental controls.
For a child’s own channel or stream
Check the child’s account and channel permissions, and do not assume that an adult being nearby changes the platform’s requirements. YouTube’s guidance recommends managing privacy and embedding settings, having an adult nearby or aware of the activity, and moderating live chat. A trusted adult can be designated as a moderator. These measures help manage exposure and interaction around a stream; they do not make every stream private or remove the need to follow the platform’s age and participation rules.

For a child who watches streams
Use the parental controls available for the child’s account and device, and review the service’s current options rather than relying on the participation rule as a viewing restriction. If the child watches on a console, review that console account’s browser, communication, and access settings as a separate layer.

Review Instagram and Facebook teen protections by location
Meta’s August 26, 2026 announcement, updated August 27 after judge approval, describes protections for under-18s in participating US states and territories. It lists a default two-hour daily limit across Facebook and Instagram, an app block from midnight to 6 a.m., notification muting from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. except for specified safety and account alerts and direct messages, prompts during long sessions, and teen content settings. The agreement is jurisdiction-specific and time-sensitive; do not assume that the same package applies everywhere. Meta’s announcement sets out the described protections.
Those are broader app, time, and content protections—not a confirmed universal switch to block Instagram Live or every live stream. Meta says direct messages are excluded from Night Mode, Time Limit, and School Mode restrictions. Therefore, a time or school-hours setting should not be mistaken for a complete communication restriction. Review the teen’s content and supervision settings as well, and check which controls are available in the family’s location.

Configure Roblox Parental Controls and experience chat
Roblox provides parent-managed content and communication controls, including experience chat, but the options depend on age and account type. Its guidance says chat settings depend on age checks and that parents can turn chat off for users under 13; screen-time features are not identical for all teens. Start from the linked child account in Roblox Parental Controls, then review the current content restrictions and communication settings.
- Link the child account to the parent account. Confirm that the account shown in Parental Controls is the one the child actually uses.
- Review content restrictions. Choose the available restrictions for the child’s age and account, and check what experiences remain accessible.
- Review communication separately. Look for experience chat and other available communication settings. Access to an experience and the ability to communicate inside it are distinct permissions.
- Set screen-time limits if available. Confirm the options for this account rather than assuming all teen accounts have identical controls.
- Check the change in context. Roblox notes that blocks can take effect only after the child next enters an experience, so an already-open experience may not reflect a change immediately.
The available guidance does not establish a standalone setting that blocks every livestream on Roblox. Use content restrictions and communication limits for their stated purposes, and do not infer that turning off experience chat blocks access to an experience or its live content.
Add PlayStation family controls for console use
PlayStation Family Management offers a device-account layer for PS4 and PS5, and is also available on the web and in the PlayStation App. A family manager can restrict game and media ratings, manage daily play time, control communication and content sharing, disable web-browser access, set spending limits, and protect settings with passcodes. Use these settings when the child accesses games, browser features, or streaming apps through a console account. They are useful for limiting console activity and permissions, but PlayStation’s guidance does not verify that family controls block every third-party streaming application or live broadcast. Apply service-specific controls inside the relevant platform as well, and secure settings with a passcode so the child cannot simply change the limits.
Check age rules against current local terms
The Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England published a parent guide with platform age information current at the time of writing in December 2025 and warns that the information may change. Its snapshot lists TikTok Live broadcasting at 18 and viewing at 13, YouTube livestreaming at 16, Instagram Live at 16, and Twitch at 13. These are figures from that dated guide, not universal legal ages or a guarantee that the same platform terms apply in every country. Verify current local platform terms before relying on them. The December 2025 guide for parents and carers is the source for this snapshot.

The age table is not a substitute for the service’s current rules or a parent’s decision about whether a child is ready to watch, participate, or broadcast. Age eligibility and parental-control features answer different questions: a child meeting a platform’s age threshold does not mean every content or contact control is appropriate for that family.
What to do about TikTok LIVE
The December 2025 England guide gives separate ages for viewing and broadcasting TikTok Live, but the available material does not establish current official menu steps for using Family Pairing to restrict either activity. Do not assume that a generic age setting, time limit, or communication control blocks TikTok LIVE specifically. Check TikTok’s current local terms and the current settings shown in the parent and child accounts, and confirm exactly whether each option applies to viewing, broadcasting, or contact.
Use this setup checklist across services
- List every account and device. Include the child’s main and secondary accounts, shared consoles, and devices where they can sign in without a parent present.
- Confirm account details. Check that age and account type are accurate, and link a parent account wherever the service supports supervised controls.
- Set content limits. Review age restrictions, discovery labels, or content settings on each service. Treat them as the controls described by that platform, not as a universal guarantee.
- Set contact limits independently. Review live chat, in-experience chat, direct messages, and other communication permissions; a content setting may not affect these.
- Decide whether broadcasting is allowed. Check the child’s ability to go live and rules for participating in another person’s stream. Those permissions differ from viewing.
- Apply console restrictions where relevant. Review ratings, playtime, communication, content sharing, browser access, and spending on the console account.
- Verify the result with the child’s account. Confirm that the supervised account is signed in and that the intended controls are visible or taking effect. For Roblox, account for the requirement that a change may take effect after the child next enters an experience.
- Recheck after updates or account changes. Platform menus and policies can change. Review the controls periodically, especially after a new device, account, or app is introduced.
Why parental controls cannot guarantee a complete live-stream block
Each service defines its controls differently. Some tools govern broadcasting, some affect discovery or content settings, and others control messages, time, or a console account’s access. A platform’s published age rule may address participation rather than viewing. Regional features may not apply to every user, and a console restriction may not govern behavior inside a third-party service.
For that reason, use layered controls and make the boundary explicit: what the child may watch, whether they may communicate with viewers or creators, and whether they may broadcast. No single setting described here guarantees that every live stream is hidden or blocked. Keep supervision focused on the actual account and device the child uses, and confirm the scope of any setting before relying on it.
