Set ServerPVE=False in the server’s GameUserSettings.ini to run PvP. Set ServerPVE=True to disable player-versus-player combat and run PvE. Make the change while the server is stopped, save the file, and restart before reconnecting.
What the ServerPVE setting does
ARK uses one Boolean server setting to choose between player-versus-player and player-versus-environment rules:

The setting applies to the server, not to an individual survivor or client. A player cannot override it with a local configuration file. Client-only options in a local copy of GameUserSettings.ini are ignored by the server.
Before you edit the configuration
- Stop the server first. Editing while ARK is running can be overwritten when the process saves its current configuration. Shut down a dedicated server cleanly, or use your host’s Stop/Offline control.
- Make a backup. Copy
GameUserSettings.iniand, if possible, the server’s save directory. A backup lets you recover from a malformed edit or an unwanted mode change. - Confirm that you are editing the server installation. ARK also creates configuration files for a client installation. Changing that client file does not change a dedicated server.
- Use a plain-text editor. Do not save the file as rich text or add formatting characters.
- Plan the restart. Players will be disconnected, and the new mode is not active until the server has started again.
Find GameUserSettings.ini
Windows dedicated server
Open the server’s configuration directory:
ShooterGameSavedConfigWindowsServerThe file you need is GameUserSettings.ini. If you installed the server in a custom location, start at that installation folder and follow the same relative path.

Linux dedicated server
Use the Linux server configuration directory:
ShooterGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Linux administrators commonly launch the dedicated server through a service manager such as systemd. The service’s working directory and user account determine which installation contains the active configuration, so verify the path used by the service rather than editing a similarly named file in a different account’s home directory.
Managed hosting
A game-hosting panel may keep the file outside the location visible to you or regenerate it from panel settings. In that case, use the panel’s documented PvE/PvP control or its expert configuration editor instead of changing a downloaded copy that the panel will overwrite.
Enable PvP by editing the INI file
- Stop the ARK server and wait until the hosting panel or service manager reports that it is offline.
- Open the server’s
GameUserSettings.iniin a plain-text editor. - Locate the section header
[ServerSettings]. The setting must be below this header, not inGame.iniand not in a client-only configuration file. - Find an existing
ServerPVEline. Replace its value withFalse. If the line is absent, add this exact entry on its own line:
ServerPVE=False- Save the file without changing its
.iniextension or adding a second extension such as.txt. - Start or restart the server.
- Wait for the server to finish loading, then reconnect and check the server browser’s game-mode information. Test with a trusted player before announcing the change to the whole community.
The line is case-insensitive in many ARK installations, but using the documented capitalization and spelling avoids parser and panel problems: ServerPVE=False.
Disable PvP and switch to PvE
- Take the server offline before editing.
- Open
GameUserSettings.iniin the WindowsServer or LinuxServer directory for the running installation. - Under
[ServerSettings], set the value to:
ServerPVE=True- Save the file, restart the server, and reconnect only after startup has completed.
- Confirm the server browser or in-game information identifies the server as PvE. If it still shows PvP, follow the troubleshooting checks below before allowing players to resume normal activity.
True does not merely prevent damage for one character; it changes the server’s mode. The server applies the PvE ruleset to connected players and creatures according to the game’s normal configuration.

Use a hosting panel instead of direct file editing
Nitrado web interface
Nitrado documents two ways to make this change. The labels can vary slightly by game version or panel layout, but the workflow is:
- Open the ARK server in the Nitrado web interface.
- Choose Settings > General.
- Use the option labeled to disable PvP and enable PvE when you want a PvE server. Leave that option disabled for PvP.
- Save the setting and restart the server from the panel.
For direct INI control, enable Expert Mode, open Settings > Expert Mode, load GameUserSettings.ini, and set the value under [ServerSettings]:

Save in Expert Mode and restart from the panel. If you edit a file by FTP or through a file manager while the panel is still running, the panel may restore its previous copy at the next restart. Make the change in the panel’s authoritative editor whenever it exposes one.
Other managed hosts
Look for a setting named ServerPVE, PvE mode, or Disable PvP in the server’s general settings. The wording may be inverted: a checkbox called “Disable PvP” is normally enabled for PvE, while the underlying INI value is True. If the panel does not expose the option, use its expert editor or file manager and place the line under [ServerSettings]. Always save and restart through the host’s controls.

Verify that the mode really changed
Do not rely only on the value you typed. Use several checks after the restart:
- Open the server browser and inspect the displayed game-mode label or server details.
- Reopen the active
GameUserSettings.inithrough the host panel or server filesystem and confirm the saved value is still present under[ServerSettings]. - Join with a test account and check the behavior that distinguishes the modes, using a controlled area and consenting players.
- Check the server log or startup console for configuration errors if the server fails to start or falls back to a previous configuration.
A browser listing can be cached briefly. Give the server time to complete its restart, refresh the list, and reconnect rather than assuming the old label proves the edit failed.

The line is in the wrong file
The mode switch belongs in GameUserSettings.ini, below [ServerSettings]. Adding it to Game.ini, a local client file, or a similarly named backup has no effect on the dedicated server.
The section header is missing or misplaced
INI settings are section-based. Make sure the line appears after the exact header:

[ServerSettings]
ServerPVE=TrueIf another section begins before the line, move the entry back into [ServerSettings].
The value is misspelled
Use only the documented key and Boolean values:
ServerPVE=Truefor PvEServerPVE=Falsefor PvP
Common failures include writing ServerPvE with an unintended character, using a colon instead of an equals sign, adding quotation marks, or typing a word such as Yes. Remove duplicate entries so there is one authoritative ServerPVE line.
The server was running during the edit
ARK can write its in-memory configuration back to disk while shutting down or saving. Stop the process, edit the file, save it, and then start the server. If the old value returns, repeat the edit while the server is offline and check whether a panel or service script is restoring a template.
The hosting panel overwrote your file
Some panels generate configuration files from web-form values. Change the setting in the panel’s general or expert settings, save there, and restart with the panel. If you must use a file editor, compare the file immediately before and after a restart to identify which system is rewriting it.

You edited the wrong installation or platform directory
Windows uses WindowsServer; Linux uses LinuxServer. Multiple ARK installations, test instances, or service accounts can each have their own ShooterGame/Saved/Config directory. Check the path used by the process that is actually listening for player connections.
You did not restart or reconnect
The value is read during server startup. A save operation alone does not change the running ruleset. Restart the server, wait for it to become ready, refresh the browser, and reconnect.

Changing a map on a PvP server that already has player profiles can trigger a known long-respawn-time problem documented by Nitrado. Treat a mode change and a map change as separate operations so that you can identify which change caused a problem.
Before changing the map, Nitrado recommends one of these player-data precautions:
- Have players upload their data through an obelisk before the map change, then download it after the new map is running.
- Make a complete backup, switch the map, and, if the respawn problem persists, perform a save-folder wipe and restore only the data you intentionally want to keep.
A save-folder wipe is destructive. Preserve the backup and confirm which player, tribe, and world data the host will remove before using that recovery step.

Both approaches use the same underlying Boolean, but administration differs. Choose based on who should control files, restarts, backups, and recovery.

The official configuration reference documents the Windows and Linux paths. Nitrado’s documentation illustrates the panel and Expert Mode workflow. Regardless of hosting type, the authoritative setting remains ServerPVE in the server’s GameUserSettings.ini.
