Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Soulmask servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The most consistently reported way to set Soulmask server combat is a launch parameter: add -pvp to start a player-versus-player server, or -pve for player-versus-environment mode. Stop the server before changing files, restart it after the change, and verify the mode in-game or in the server browser. If you rent a server, your provider may expose the same setting as a Game Type or PvP option in its control panel.
Choose the right method first
Soulmask server guides describe three practical ways to change the mode. They are not equally reliable across builds, so use them in this order:
| Method | Best for | What is established | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch parameter | Self-hosted or manually managed dedicated servers | -pvp and -pve are the most consistently reported switches. See Bisect Hosting’s guide and Oxygenserv’s guide. |
A parameter can override a file value, making an edit appear ineffective. |
| Hosting control panel | Rented Soulmask servers | Several providers present a Game Type or PvP selector in server settings. | The label and location differ by provider. |
| Configuration file | Installations where no panel or launch command is available | Community guides list several different keys and files, but they conflict and may be build-specific. | Editing the wrong file or key has no effect and can create startup problems. |
For a server you administer directly, use the launch flag first. For a rented server, check the panel before downloading or editing configuration files. Keep only one intentional source of truth while testing; otherwise, a higher-priority setting can hide the change you made elsewhere.
Enable PvP with the server launch command
1. Stop the server and back up its settings
Stop the Soulmask process cleanly. Do not edit an active configuration file: the running process may overwrite your change on shutdown, or the file may be read only partially. Copy the server’s configuration directory to a dated backup location so you can restore the previous mode if needed.

2. Find the command used to start the dedicated server
Look for the shortcut, shell script, service definition, scheduled task, or hosting-panel field that starts the Soulmask dedicated-server executable. You are looking for the complete command line, not a browser launch option for the game client.
3. Append the PvP switch
Add -pvp as a separate argument at the end of the server command. Do not remove existing ports, query settings, world names, or memory options. A generic command therefore looks like this:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
ExistingSoulmaskServerCommand -pvp
The executable name and surrounding arguments vary by installation, so treat this as placement guidance rather than a copy-and-paste executable path. The cited hosting guides identify the flag itself, not a universal command line for every release.
4. Restart and verify
Start the server normally and connect with an administrator account. Confirm the mode in the in-game server information or in the server browser. If the browser still shows PvE, stop the server and inspect the actual command that the service or panel launched; editing a shortcut that is not used by the service will not change anything.
Disable PvP and return to PvE
Replace the switch, do not add both
Stop the server, remove -pvp, and add -pve instead:
ExistingSoulmaskServerCommand -pve
Do not leave both flags on the same command while troubleshooting. Guides consistently describe the two switches as alternatives. If a control panel generated the command, changing the panel’s Game Type or PvP option is preferable to manually appending a second flag.

Check the effect on an existing world
Changing the mode is a server-setting change, not a guarantee that every existing character, claim, or combat-related state will be reset. Make a backup before switching a populated world, tell players when the restart will occur, and verify the resulting rules with a test character or trusted player. The available guides do not establish a universal migration behavior for every Soulmask build.

Use a rented server’s control panel
Managed hosts commonly wrap the launch parameter in a form field. The exact labels differ, but the workflow is usually:
- Stop the Soulmask server from the provider’s control panel.
- Open Server Settings, Configuration, or a similarly named page.
- Find Game Type, Gameplay Mode, PvP, or Player versus Player.
- Select PvP to enable combat between players, or PvE to disable it.
- Save the change, then start or restart the server.
- Confirm the mode in the server browser or from inside the game.
Panel settings are safer for rented servers because the provider can write the correct files and preserve its service configuration. If the panel offers both a mode selector and a raw launch-argument box, do not set contradictory values. A launch parameter is reported to take precedence over file settings, so an old -pvp in the command may override a panel selection that writes PvE to a file.
Self-hosted versus rented servers
The practical difference is access rather than gameplay. A self-hosted administrator can inspect the executable command, generated configuration folders, and service logs, but is responsible for backups and syntax. A rented-server customer normally has no reason to edit the host’s filesystem: the provider’s selector is intended to write the supported value and restart the instance safely.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Task | Self-hosted server | Rented server |
|---|---|---|
| Choose mode | Edit the real launch command first. | Use the provider’s Game Type or PvP control. |
| Resolve a stuck setting | Inspect services, scripts, and all launch flags. | Check for a raw argument field or ask the host to remove an old flag. |
| Backups | Copy the configuration directory before edits. | Use the panel’s backup or restore feature when available. |
| After updates | Recheck generated files and command-line arguments. | Confirm that the provider’s template still exposes the mode. |
Do not assume that a panel label and a file key are independent settings. Many panels regenerate files at startup. If you manually alter a generated file, the next restart may restore the panel’s value, so make the supported panel change or remove the contradictory launch argument instead.
Configuration-file methods: what the guides actually agree on
There is no single, verified PvP key that can be recommended for every current Soulmask build. The documented file routes conflict. Treat them as candidates to inspect in your own installation, not as interchangeable instructions.
Candidate A: ServerSettings.ini
Valebyte describes a [ServerSettings] section containing:
PVPMode=0 # 0 for PvE, 1 for PvP
That key is reported in Valebyte’s dedicated-server guide. The guide is a single-source report, and the available evidence does not confirm that the key exists or is still honored in every build. Use the numeric values only if your generated file already contains this setting or your build’s documentation confirms it.

Candidate B: Engine.ini under Dedicated.Settings
Another guide places a Boolean switch in Engine.ini:
[Dedicated.Settings]
pvp=True
This syntax is reported by Gazlabs. It conflicts with the ServerSettings.ini example: different file names, section names, and value formats may reflect different releases, hosting templates, or incomplete community documentation. Do not create this section blindly if your installation has no corresponding settings structure.
Candidate C: GameXishu.json
A third report names a JSON property called HuXiangShangHaiKaiGuan, with 1 for on and 0 for off. The available material does not establish that this toggle is present in current builds, nor does it provide a universal path. If you inspect a JSON file, preserve valid JSON syntax: use the existing comma placement, quotation marks, and encoding, and keep a backup before saving.
Generate missing files before editing
If ServerSettings.ini does not exist, one setup guide recommends running the server once so it generates its configuration, then stopping it before editing. This is safer than inventing a path. The generated location can vary with the installation method, so search the server’s own configuration directories after the first run.

Some setup summaries describe this priority order: startup parameters first, then Engine.ini, with a startup parameter overriding the file value. The priority claim is not confirmed by an official Soulmask manual, but it explains a common symptom: you change a file to PvE and the server remains PvP because the service still launches with -pvp.
| Observed configuration | Likely result | What to do |
|---|---|---|
-pvp and a file set to PvE |
Likely PvP | Remove or replace the launch flag, then restart. |
-pve and a file set to PvP |
Likely PvE | Remove or replace the launch flag, then restart. |
| No launch flag; one recognized file key | Depends on the build | Verify after restart and check the startup command if unchanged. |
| Several conflicting file keys | Not predictable from the available guides | Restore the backup, identify the key your generated files use, and change one setting at a time. |
When diagnosing precedence, change only one layer at a time. First remove every explicit mode flag and test the generated configuration. If that does not work, restore the backup and put one documented flag back on the command. This isolates whether the service is reading the file at all, rather than mixing a command-line override with several speculative keys.
How to locate the setting in a self-hosted installation
- Stop the process. Confirm that the executable is no longer running before opening files.
- Back up the configuration directory. Include
.iniand.jsonfiles and record the current launch command. - Search for the text
PVP. Search the installation’s configuration folders, including both INI and JSON files. Case-insensitive search is useful because community examples vary in capitalization. - Record the file and section. Note whether the match is in
ServerSettings.ini,Engine.ini,GameXishu.json, or another generated file. Do not edit every match at once. - Change one candidate setting. Preserve the surrounding section and formatting. For JSON, validate that the file remains syntactically valid.
- Start the server and verify. Check the browser or in-game server information. If there is no change, revert that edit and test the next documented candidate, or use the launch flag.
This search-first approach matters because file paths and key names are reported as version-dependent. A guide written for an older community build can be technically accurate for that build and still be wrong for the files your server generated.

Troubleshooting when PvP does not change
The browser still shows the old mode
- Confirm the server was fully stopped before editing and fully restarted afterward.
- Check the command used by the service, container, scheduler, or control panel—not just a desktop shortcut.
- Search for a lingering
-pvpor-pve; the launch parameter may override the file. - Verify that you edited the active instance, not a second test server or an archived backup.
- Allow time for the server browser to refresh, then reconnect rather than relying on a cached listing.
The server fails to start after an edit
- Stop the process and restore the backup immediately.
- For INI files, remove accidental section duplication, smart quotes, or stray characters on the setting line.
- For JSON files, restore valid commas, braces, quotation marks, and number formats.
- Start with the known-good launch command, then test a single change.
The file is missing
Run the server once to allow it to generate its settings, stop it, and search again. If the file is still absent, use the launch parameter or the host panel rather than creating an unverified path. The guides do not establish one universal directory for all operating systems and hosting layouts.
A panel change keeps reverting
Some panels regenerate configuration files whenever the server starts. Make the change through the panel’s supported Game Type or PvP control, remove contradictory manual flags, save, and restart from the panel. If the provider exposes the raw command line, inspect it for an automatically added mode flag.
PvP mode versus PvP damage tuning
Turning PvP on does not necessarily mean every combat value is at its default. A reported GameXishu.json file contains separate tuning keys named PVP_ShangHaiRatio_JinZhan for melee damage and PVP_ShangHaiRatio_YuanCheng for ranged damage; both are reported with a default value of 0.4. These are balance parameters, not the basic on/off switch, and the available evidence does not confirm their presence in every current build.
Do not change damage ratios while diagnosing a mode problem. First establish that the server starts in PvP or PvE, back up the file, and then change one balance value at a time if your build clearly contains those keys. A damage-ratio edit cannot substitute for the launch flag or mode setting.
Version and maintenance cautions
A setup guide on games.gg is labelled version 1.0 and dated April 2026, while several other instructions are older host or community posts. That makes the names and paths useful clues, not permanent API guarantees. After a Soulmask update, repeat the search for PVP, compare the generated files with your backup, and retest the launch command. Keep a short change log containing the date, selected mode, command-line flags, edited file, and verification result.

- Renting a server: use the provider’s Game Type or PvP option, save, restart, and verify.
- Self-hosting: append
-pvpor-pveto the real launch command and restart. - Editing files: stop first, back up, search for existing PvP keys, change one candidate, and validate after restart.
- Seeing no effect: inspect launch parameters before changing another file; a flag likely has priority.
- After an update: assume paths and keys may have changed until the generated configuration and in-game behavior confirm otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to enable PvP on a Soulmask dedicated server?
Stop the server, append -pvp to the command that actually starts the dedicated server, restart it, and confirm the mode in the browser or in-game server information. The -pvp switch is the most consistently reported method in Bisect Hosting and Oxygenserv instructions.

How do I turn PvP off?
Remove -pvp from the real launch command and use -pve instead. Do not leave both switches in place. If a host panel controls the command, select PvE or disable its PvP option rather than adding a second manual flag.
Why did changing ServerSettings.ini not work?
A startup parameter may override file settings. Check the service, script, container, scheduled task, or panel for a lingering -pvp or -pve. File keys also differ between builds, so verify that your generated file actually contains the key you edited.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich Soulmask config file contains the PvP setting?
Guides identify several candidates rather than one universal file: ServerSettings.ini with PVPMode=0 or 1, Engine.ini under [Dedicated.Settings] with pvp=True, and a possible GameXishu.json property named HuXiangShangHaiKaiGuan. Search your installation first and change only a key already present in the generated configuration.
What should I do if ServerSettings.ini is missing?
Run the server once so it can generate its settings, stop it, and search the installation’s configuration folders again. If the file remains absent, use the launch flag or your hosting panel instead of creating an undocumented path.
Can I switch a populated world from PvP to PvE safely?
The documented guides do not establish one migration rule for every build. Back up the world and configuration, announce the restart, switch the mode, and test with an administrator or trusted player. Do not assume characters, claims, or combat-related state will be reset or preserved identically after the change.
Does enabling PvP automatically change damage values?
Not necessarily. A reported GameXishu.json includes separate melee and ranged PvP damage-ratio keys, PVP_ShangHaiRatio_JinZhan and PVP_ShangHaiRatio_YuanCheng, each listed with a default of 0.4. Those are balance controls, not the basic PvP/PvE switch, and may not exist in every build.
How can I verify that the server really changed modes?
Restart after the change and check the server browser or in-game server information. If the old mode remains, confirm that you restarted the active instance, inspect the actual launch command for an overriding flag, and allow the browser listing time to refresh before testing again.
The Bottom Line
For the most reliable Soulmask server mode change, use -pvp or -pve in the actual launch command, or use your host’s Game Type/PvP selector. Stop and back up before editing files, treat INI and JSON keys as build-dependent, and always verify the mode after a full restart.
