Use the PvP Enabled switch to change the basic combat rules on a Conan Exiles server. An administrator can change it in the in-game Server Settings screen, or a dedicated-server administrator can edit ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini. Set PVPEnabled=True to allow player-versus-player combat and PVPEnabled=False to run the server as PvE.
The in-game method is the quickest and Funcom documents it as applying after you save, without necessarily restarting the server. File edits require the save, reload or restart procedure specified by your host. Scheduled combat and building damage are separate controls, so enabling PvP alone does not define every rule your players will experience.
What the PvP setting actually controls
PVPEnabled is the master capability switch. When it is enabled, the server permits the player-versus-player combat rules that the rest of the configuration allows. When it is disabled, the server operates as PvE for player combat.
That switch is not the same as every other form of conflict. Conan Exiles exposes separate controls for restricting PvP to certain times and for limiting damage to player-built structures. A server can therefore be configured in several distinct ways:

Think of the master switch as the answer to “can players fight each other at all?” The restriction keys answer “when can they fight?” Building-damage settings answer “what can they damage?” Keeping those questions separate prevents a common misconfiguration in which a server is technically PvP but does not permit the expected raid or building damage.
Before changing the server
Make the change with an administrator account and identify which configuration method your server uses. A locally hosted game, a dedicated server, and a provider-managed server may expose different menus or file-management screens. - Confirm that you can log in with administrator privileges. The server-settings interface is available to server administrators.
- Tell connected players when the rules will change. A sudden change from PvE to PvP can make existing bases and inventories vulnerable according to the rest of your ruleset.
- If you will edit a file, note the current value first and make a backup or copy according to your host’s procedure.
- Decide whether you want permanent PvP, permanent PvE, or scheduled combat windows before changing the master switch.
- Plan a verification test with consenting players rather than testing by attacking an unaware player.
Do not edit an arbitrary file with a similar name. For a Windows dedicated server, the documented file is ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini, and the relevant entry belongs under the [ServerSettings] section.
Enable or disable PvP in the in-game interface
This is the preferred method when you can access the server as an administrator. Funcom describes the feature as available from the in-game options and Server Settings GUI, and states that settings can be adjusted and implemented on the fly after they are applied.
- Join the server as an administrator. If the server does not recognize your account as an administrator, the setting may be unavailable or the save operation may be rejected.
- Open the server settings. Use Settings > Server Settings. Some builds or host interfaces label the first menu Options instead, so the equivalent path may appear as Options > Server Settings.
- Locate “PvP Enabled.” Search or scroll through the server rules until you find that exact option. Do not confuse it with a PvP-time restriction or a building-damage option.
- Choose the required state. Turn the option on to enable PvP, or turn it off to disable PvP and run the server as PvE.
- Apply or save the settings. Use the confirmation control shown by your platform or host panel. Closing the menu without applying the change may leave the old rules in force.
- Verify the result. Reopen the option and check the server browser’s ruleset. If you have arranged a test, confirm behavior with another consenting player.
The GUI method can apply without a server restart according to Funcom’s documentation. That does not mean every surrounding setting refreshes identically on every platform, so always confirm the saved value and the visible server rules after applying it.

When the menu wording is different
Console versions, current game builds, and third-party control panels can present slightly different labels. Look for the server-administration screen rather than relying on one exact capitalization or menu title. The important control is the one named PvP Enabled; a host panel may expose the same setting in a web form while using a different navigation path.
Changing from PvP to PvE safely
Turn PvP Enabled off, apply the change, and announce the new ruleset. Players who remain connected may not immediately understand the change, so ask them to reconnect if the browser or in-game indicators do not update. Then perform the three-part verification described below: saved setting, browser ruleset, and an agreed gameplay check.
Enable or disable PvP in ServerSettings.ini
Use the file method for a dedicated server when the host gives you configuration-file access or when you need a repeatable server configuration. The setting is a plain Boolean value under [ServerSettings].
- Stop the server or follow the host’s safe-edit process. Some hosts permit an online edit followed by a reload; others require the process to be stopped first. Use the procedure supplied by your host so a running process does not overwrite your change.
- Open the documented file:
ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini. - Find the
[ServerSettings]section. Add the line there if it does not exist, or change the existing value. The enable form is:

PVPEnabled=TrueTo disable PvP, use:

PVPEnabled=False- Save the file. Keep the spelling and capitalization of the key exactly as shown. If the file already contains a
PVPEnabledentry, change that entry rather than creating competing copies. - Reload or restart through the host’s documented process. Direct file edits must be read by the server process before they can affect gameplay. A host may call this action restart, reload, or apply configuration.
- Reopen the file after the host finishes. Confirm that the value is still present, then check the server browser and perform a controlled gameplay test.
The file path above is the Windows dedicated-server path. A host panel may hide the physical directory behind an editor, but it should still write the same [ServerSettings] value. If your installation uses a different operating system or a provider-specific layout, use that host’s documented equivalent rather than assuming the Windows path exists unchanged.
Common INI editing mistakes
- Editing the wrong installation. Multiple server instances can have separate saved directories. Verify the instance associated with the public server you intend to change.
- Putting the key outside
[ServerSettings]. The documented entry belongs in that section. A line in an unrelated section may be ignored. - Leaving two conflicting entries. Remove or replace the old line so there is one authoritative
PVPEnabledvalue. - Changing the file while it is being regenerated. If the value disappears after a restart, stop the service or use the provider’s apply workflow, then inspect the file again.
- Checking only the file. A file can contain the intended value while the wrong server instance is running. Confirm the browser ruleset and actual behavior as well.
Schedule PvP for selected hours
Use scheduled PvP when the server should be peaceful most of the time but allow combat during agreed windows. Scheduling does not replace the master switch: PVPEnabled must still be enabled.

The configuration reference identifies RestrictPVPTime as the separate control that limits PvP to configured periods. It also lists weekday-specific keys such as PVPTimeMondayStart and PVPTimeMondayEnd. Equivalent keys can be configured for the other days represented by the server settings.

PVPEnabled=True. - Enable the PvP-time restriction using
RestrictPVPTimeaccording to the value format exposed by your game build or host panel. - Define the start and end values for each day that should have a combat window, using keys such as
PVPTimeMondayStartandPVPTimeMondayEnd. - Apply the configuration through the GUI or the host’s file/reload procedure.
- Test once inside a window and once outside it, with consenting players, so you know the schedule is being interpreted as intended.
The available material does not establish one universal hour format or a single recommended timetable. Use the value format shown by your server’s current configuration reference or control panel rather than copying a time syntax from an unrelated game version.
Do scheduled windows protect buildings?
Not automatically. Building damage has its own restriction settings. If players can fight during a window but cannot damage structures, that may be the intended result of your building rules rather than a failed PvP configuration. Decide these policies independently:
- Whether player combat is enabled at all.
- Whether combat is allowed continuously or only during configured windows.
- Whether player-owned structures can be damaged during those windows.
Explain all three policies to your community. Calling a server “weekend PvP,” for example, is incomplete unless players also know whether bases are vulnerable during the weekend window.
How to verify the change
Use all three checks instead of relying on one indicator.

1. Confirm the saved configuration
In the GUI, reopen PvP Enabled and confirm its state. For a dedicated server, reopen ServerSettings.ini and verify that PVPEnabled=True or PVPEnabled=False remains under [ServerSettings] after the host has reloaded the server.
2. Check the server browser
Refresh the listing and inspect the displayed ruleset. If it still shows the previous mode, allow the host’s reload to complete and reconnect or refresh the browser. The browser is useful for confirming what prospective players see, but it should not be your only test.
3. Perform a controlled gameplay test
Arrange a test with players who have agreed to it. Test during and outside a scheduled window when applicable. If structure damage is part of your design, test that separately with a disposable or authorized structure; player combat working does not prove that building damage is enabled.

The PvP option is missing
Check that you are logged in with administrator privileges and that you opened the server-administration screen rather than ordinary personal settings. On a managed server, the provider may expose the option only in its control panel. Menu wording can vary by platform, so search for the server settings page and the specific PvP Enabled control.

The file says True, but the server is still PvE
First confirm that you edited the instance serving the public address. Then verify that the key is under [ServerSettings], that there is not a second conflicting PVPEnabled line, and that the host actually reloaded or restarted the process after the save. Finally, check the browser listing and run a consenting-player test.

The setting changes back after an administrator logs in
A 2019 report on the Funcom forums described a historical problem in which logging in as an administrator could remove PVPEnabled=True. Treat that as a warning about older or particular server configurations, not as a guaranteed behavior of every current build. If your server unexpectedly returns to PvE, inspect the file immediately, restore the intended line under [ServerSettings], and restart or reload using the host’s procedure. Recheck the value after the administrator login and after the next routine restart.
Players can fight, but bases cannot be damaged
Review the building-damage restriction settings. They are independent of PVPEnabled, so this symptom can be a correct result of a deliberately protected-base ruleset. If the intention is raid-enabled PvP, configure the structure-damage rules for the same windows and test an authorized structure.
Scheduled PvP never starts
Confirm that PVPEnabled=True is still present. Then inspect RestrictPVPTime and the weekday start/end keys for the day being tested. Check one window while players are connected and another outside the window. A typo, an omitted weekday entry, or a host that has not reloaded the edited file can make a valid schedule appear inactive.

The browser and gameplay test disagree
Give the server time to finish applying the setting, refresh the browser, and reconnect the test players. If the disagreement persists, trust neither indicator alone: compare the live server instance with the saved configuration and repeat the test after a confirmed reload. This process distinguishes a display delay from a configuration or instance-selection error.
Choosing the right configuration method

Whichever method you use, document the intended state for your administrators: the master PvP value, any time restriction, and the building-damage policy. That record makes future troubleshooting much faster than relying on a server-browser label alone.
