To disable player damage to castles, stop the server, open the persistent ServerGameSettings.json, set GameModeType to PvP only if you want castle-damage rules active, set CastleDamageMode to Never, save, and restart. To permit unrestricted raiding, use Always. To permit raiding only during scheduled windows, use TimeRestricted and configure the server’s VSCastle schedule.
What CastleDamageMode controls
CastleDamageMode is the V Rising server setting that determines whether vampires can damage other players’ castles. It has three documented values:

The setting is only active when GameModeType is PvP. On a PvE server, players cannot directly damage other players or their castles, so changing CastleDamageMode does not turn castle raiding on there.
Before changing the setting
- Stop the server first. Editing while the server is running can be overwritten when the process saves its current configuration.
- Identify the persistent settings file. A Windows dedicated server normally uses
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettingsServerGameSettings.json. The defaults in the installation folder are not the durable location for your live overrides. - Make a backup. Copy the existing JSON file before editing so you can restore the previous rules if a comma, quote, or value is mistyped.
- Check whether a control panel is managing the file. Hosted servers may expose the same fields in their configuration interface. A preset may have to be changed to a default or custom-settings mode before individual values can be edited.
- Tell players when the rule changes. Switching from protection to unrestricted damage changes the risk to every occupied castle after the next restart.
Windows dedicated-server procedure
1. Stop the server cleanly
Use the server’s normal stop command or hosting interface and wait until the process is no longer running. Do not edit the file while the server is still active. The new value is read when the server starts again, not continuously while a session is in progress.

2. Open the persistent ServerGameSettings.json
In Windows Explorer, enter this path in the address bar:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettingsOpen ServerGameSettings.json in a text editor that preserves plain text. If you operate several instances, confirm that you are editing the instance’s persistent settings directory rather than a sample or installation-folder defaults file.

3. Confirm the game mode
Find GameModeType. Castle-damage rules operate as PvP rules, so it must be set to PvP when you want the CastleDamageMode value to govern player attacks on castles.

4. Choose the castle-damage value
Replace the existing value after CastleDamageMode, or add the key if it is missing. Keep the JSON punctuation used by the rest of the file.
For protected castles in a PvP world:

TimeRestricted is not a permanent disable. It delegates the timing decision to the VSCastle windows configured in PlayerInteractionSettings. Review that schedule before announcing raid times. If the schedule does not match your intended periods, the server’s actual vulnerability hours will not match the rule you described to players.
The schedule is a separate concern from the mode:
CastleDamageModedecides whether castle damage is never allowed, always allowed, or schedule-dependent.PlayerInteractionSettingssupplies the scheduledVSCastlewindows used by the schedule-dependent option.
6. Decide the castle-heart rule separately
CastleHeartDamageMode is independent of the general castle-damage switch. It determines what attackers may do to a castle heart, including whether destruction is limited to decay, whether players may destroy it, or whether players may seize or destroy it. Choose the documented option that matches your intended heart behavior instead of assuming that CastleDamageMode controls every outcome.

This distinction matters when a server appears to have the right structure-damage rule but still allows an unwanted heart outcome. A protected-building policy and a heart-seizure policy are separate decisions.
7. Save and restart
Save the file, close the editor, and start the server again. The restart is required for the new settings to load. Hosted-server documentation likewise requires stopping and restarting around this change. Wait for the server to finish starting before testing with a client.

Managed V Rising server panels commonly expose the same fields without requiring direct file access. The labels may be grouped under gameplay, PvP, castle, or interaction settings, but the underlying choices remain Never, Always, and TimeRestricted.
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Open the server-settings editor or configuration area.
- If the panel is using a locked preset, switch to its default or custom-settings mode so individual values can be changed.
- Set
GameModeTypetoPvPif castle-damage rules are required. - Set
CastleDamageModetoNever,Always, orTimeRestricted. - If using the scheduled value, review the panel’s
VSCastleentries underPlayerInteractionSettings. - Review
CastleHeartDamageModeseparately. - Save the configuration and restart the server.
Some panels regenerate ServerGameSettings.json from their own database. In that case, make the change in the panel rather than editing a downloaded copy that the panel will overwrite.

Choosing the right mode for your server
PvP combat without castle raiding
Set GameModeType to PvP and CastleDamageMode to Never. Players can retain a PvP environment while other players’ castles remain immune to direct castle damage. This is the appropriate combination when the goal is “keep PvP, stop castle raiding.”
Unrestricted raiding
Set PvP mode and use Always. This permits castle damage at any time, so the server’s community rules should clearly state that castles are continuously exposed rather than protected outside a declared period.
Scheduled raiding
Set PvP mode and use TimeRestricted. Then define the VSCastle windows in PlayerInteractionSettings. This gives you a scheduled vulnerability model, but it does not make castles permanently safe. Players can damage them whenever the configured windows are open.
Protecting structures but controlling the heart independently
Use the appropriate castle-damage value, then select a deliberate CastleHeartDamageMode. A server can have one policy for damaging castle buildings and another for destroying or seizing the heart, so publish both rules to players.

Validation after the restart
- Confirm the server restarted from the same instance whose settings you edited.
- Check that the file still contains the intended values after startup. A panel or startup process may have rewritten it.
- Verify the game mode is PvP when testing castle-damage behavior.
- For
Never, test that a player cannot damage another player’s castle. - For
Always, test during a normal period, not only during a scheduled window. - For
TimeRestricted, test once inside and once outside a configuredVSCastlewindow. - Test the castle heart separately if its destruction or seizure rules matter.
Use a controlled test with the affected players informed in advance. A failed test can otherwise be mistaken for a rules change, lag, or a client-side display problem.
Troubleshooting
The setting appears to have no effect
- Check that the server was stopped before editing and restarted afterward.
- Confirm that the edited file is the persistent settings file, not installation-folder defaults.
- Verify that
GameModeTypeisPvP. The castle-damage setting is inactive in PvE. - If the server is hosted, check the control panel’s saved values and preset mode. The panel may have replaced the file or ignored manual edits.
- Confirm the value is spelled exactly as
Never,Always, orTimeRestricted.
TimeRestricted does not match the advertised raid period
Inspect the VSCastle schedule under PlayerInteractionSettings. TimeRestricted only references those windows; it does not define its own hours. Check the server’s configured schedule and the time basis used by that server before changing the announcement.
Castles are protected, but the heart behaves differently
Review CastleHeartDamageMode. Castle structure damage and heart destruction or seizure are separate settings, so changing CastleDamageMode alone does not establish the heart policy.
The JSON file will not load after editing
Restore the backup, then reapply only the intended key. Check for smart quotes, missing commas, accidental comments, or a comma after the final property. Keep the file as valid JSON and restart after correcting it. If a hosting panel owns the configuration, use its editor instead of repeatedly modifying a generated file.
