To enable response compression on Apache, load the mod_deflate module and add a filter directive in the server configuration, virtual host, directory container, or an allowed .htaccess file. For most sites, use MIME-type scoping so Apache compresses text responses without wasting CPU on formats that are already compressed:
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/css text/javascript application/javascript
Apache then negotiates gzip compression with clients that advertise support. A broad SetOutputFilter DEFLATE rule is available, but it needs more careful exclusions and review.
What mod_deflate does
mod_deflate is Apache HTTP Server’s output-filter module for compressing responses before they travel over the network. Apache’s documentation describes it as providing the DEFLATE output filter, which compresses server output before it is sent to the client. The filter acts on the response generated by Apache or by an application behind it; it does not rewrite the source files stored on disk.
Compression is most useful for text because HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML, and plain text contain repeated patterns that can be represented more compactly. The reduction in bytes can make a response arrive sooner on a constrained connection, but the result depends on the actual content, compression settings, client negotiation, and server workload. Apache does not publish one universal compression-ratio figure that applies to every site.

The module’s browser-facing content encoding is gzip. The Apache documentation specifically notes that this module supports gzip for browser compatibility; the deflate content encoding is not supported by mod_deflate. In practice, the client advertises acceptable encodings and Apache decides whether to return a compressed representation.
Choose a filter scope before changing configuration
There are two practical patterns. Select the narrow pattern when you know which response types should be compressed. Select the broad pattern only when you have a reason to apply the filter widely and are prepared to exclude unsuitable data.
Recommended Free Tools
| Pattern | Directive | Best use | Main concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIME-type scoping | AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE ... |
Compressing selected text responses such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML, and plain text | A response whose MIME type is missing or unexpected will not match the list |
| Broad filter enablement | SetOutputFilter DEFLATE |
Applying the output filter broadly within one Apache container | It can process content that gains little from compression or should be excluded |
MIME scoping is the safer default for a general website because the rule states exactly which content types are eligible. Broad enablement is not automatically wrong, but it places the burden of exclusions and testing on the administrator.
Where Apache accepts the directive
The rule must be placed in a configuration context that is actually used for the request. Apache’s documented choices are the main server configuration, a virtual-host configuration, a directory container, or an allowed .htaccess file. Which one is appropriate depends on who controls the server and how the site is deployed.
Main server or virtual-host configuration
Use the main configuration when the policy should apply to many sites on the server. A virtual-host block is more appropriate when one site’s responses should be compressed without changing every hosted site. These locations also make the policy visible to administrators and avoid relying on per-directory overrides.
Directory container
A directory container limits the filter to resources served from that filesystem location. Apache’s documentation demonstrates this style for a directory that applies DEFLATE only to text/html. The directive can therefore be kept close to the document-root policy instead of being made global.

.htaccess
A site owner can use .htaccess only when the server allows the needed directive in that context. If Apache rejects the directive or returns an internal-server-error response after the file is changed, the hosting policy may disallow that override; move the rule to the virtual-host or server configuration, or ask the administrator to enable the module and permit the directive.
Recommended MIME-scoped configuration
Add the following rule to the selected configuration context:
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/css text/javascript application/javascript
This list covers the common text types named in Apache’s practical example. Each token is a MIME type, so the response’s declared type determines whether the filter is selected.
Adding the rule safely
- Confirm that mod_deflate is available. The configuration can use the directives only when the Apache installation has the module loaded. On managed hosting, this is an administrator-level setting rather than a file you can add yourself.
- Select one configuration context. Use the virtual host for a site-wide policy, a directory container for a path-specific policy, or an allowed
.htaccessfile when you do not control the global configuration. - Insert the MIME rule. Keep the directive in the active container for the responses you intend to compress. Avoid copying the same rule into several nested files unless you have a deliberate reason to do so.
- Validate the Apache configuration. Run the normal configuration-test procedure used by your operating system or hosting platform before reloading Apache. A syntax error in a global or virtual-host file can prevent a reload.
- Reload Apache using your deployment’s normal procedure. A reload applies the policy to new requests while avoiding an unnecessary full server replacement when your service manager supports graceful configuration reloads.
- Check a text response with compression requested. In browser developer tools, inspect the response headers in the Network panel. A negotiated compressed response should identify gzip as its content encoding, while the response type should match one of the configured MIME types.
The rule does not force compression on a client that did not request or accept gzip. Negotiation remains part of HTTP content delivery, so a client that cannot use the selected encoding receives an uncompressed representation instead.
Using SetOutputFilter DEFLATE
The broad form is:
SetOutputFilter DEFLATE
Placed in an applicable container, this enables the DEFLATE output filter broadly for responses handled there. It is concise, but it does not express which MIME types are suitable. Broad filtering therefore requires deliberate exclusions and observation of the actual responses produced by the application.
Do not interpret the directive as a command to compress every byte generated by the server. Images and other binary assets may already use a compressed representation, and applying another general-purpose pass can consume CPU without materially reducing transfer size. Broad scope also makes it easier to compress a response containing data that should not be processed under the same policy as ordinary public text.

When broad scope can be reasonable
- The container is tightly controlled and serves a known set of text responses.
- You have reviewed the MIME types and generated output in that container.
- You have explicit exclusions for formats that should not be passed through the filter.
- You have considered whether any response contains secrets or attacker-influenced data over TLS.
If those conditions are not true, MIME scoping communicates intent more clearly and reduces surprises when a new file type or application endpoint is added.
Exclude already-compressed images and unsuitable formats
Apache’s example excludes common image extensions when a broad policy is used:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI ".(?:gif|jpe?g|png)$" no-gzip
The rule marks requests for GIF, JPEG, and PNG resources with the no-gzip environment flag, preventing the gzip filter from handling those paths. The case-insensitive match covers upper- and lower-case extensions. Keep this exclusion alongside a broad filter policy so a later administrator can see why those assets are treated differently.
The extension check is a practical safeguard, not a substitute for understanding the response. An application can generate an image or another binary response at a URL that does not end in one of these extensions, and a URL ending in an image extension may not actually return an image. MIME-scoped rules avoid many such mistakes by selecting responses according to their declared type, while broad rules may need additional application-specific exclusions.
How gzip negotiation works
A browser or other HTTP client advertises the encodings it can decode. Apache’s compression filter then chooses gzip when it is supported and appropriate. The server sends a compressed representation with a content-encoding indication so the client knows how to decode it. Clients that do not advertise gzip are served without that encoding.
This negotiation is why testing only one request can be misleading. A request made from a modern browser may be compressed, while a request from a different client, a health checker, or a debugging tool that omits the acceptance header may not be. Compare requests with and without gzip support when diagnosing an apparent inconsistency.

Do not configure deflate as the browser encoding
The word “DEFLATE” names Apache’s output filter, but it does not mean that the HTTP response should use the deflate content encoding. Apache documents gzip as the supported browser-compatible encoding for this module and states that the deflate encoding is not supported by mod_deflate. Keep the filter directive and the HTTP content-encoding concept distinct when reading headers or troubleshooting clients.
Make caches and reverse proxies vary correctly
When Apache sits behind a reverse proxy or cache, the intermediary may store one response and reuse it for later requests. Compressed and uncompressed responses are different representations of the same resource, so the cache must distinguish requests according to whether the client accepts gzip.
Apache’s documentation calls attention to Vary: Accept-Encoding and to cache and proxy behavior. Check that this variation information survives the path between the origin and the client. If an intermediary ignores it, a client that cannot decode gzip could receive a cached compressed response, or a client that supports gzip could repeatedly receive the larger uncompressed representation.
| Deployment | What to verify | Typical failure if overlooked |
|---|---|---|
| Direct origin | Apache selects gzip only when the request advertises it and sends the appropriate variation metadata | Different clients appear to receive different sizes, leading to a false conclusion that compression is unreliable |
| Origin behind a reverse proxy or cache | The intermediary preserves or honors Vary: Accept-Encoding and does not collapse the two representations |
A cache serves the wrong encoding or prevents compressed responses from being reused safely |
Inspect response headers at the client-facing edge, not only at the origin server. A correct origin configuration can still produce incorrect delivery if an intermediary rewrites, strips, or ignores the variation metadata.

Compression can create a side channel when secrets and attacker-influenced text appear in the same TLS-protected response. Apache warns that some web applications are vulnerable to information disclosure when TLS carries deflate-compressed data and points to BREACH-family risks. The issue is not that gzip is inherently unsafe for every response; it is that compression can reveal length relationships that an attacker may probe in a vulnerable application.
Review these response classes before enabling broad compression
- Pages that include anti-forgery tokens, session identifiers, reset links, or other secrets in the response body.
- Endpoints where an attacker can cause chosen text to appear next to a secret and can observe repeated compressed response sizes.
- Authenticated pages delivered over TLS that combine private data with user-controlled input.
Do not treat a blanket SetOutputFilter DEFLATE rule as a security-neutral optimization. If an application has a compression side-channel exposure, narrow the MIME scope, exclude the affected responses through the application’s response policy, or follow the application’s established mitigation plan. The correct decision depends on the data and request flow, not only on the file extension.

Do not confuse response compression with input decompression
The ordinary use of mod_deflate is output compression: Apache compresses data going from the server to the client. Apache’s documentation also discusses input decompression and output inflation for special proxy or WebDAV cases. Those are separate behaviors for handling compressed request bodies or expanding data for another component.
Do not enable input decompression or output inflation merely because you want faster HTML, CSS, or JavaScript delivery. They solve different integration problems and can change how request bodies are processed. Configure them only when a specific proxy or WebDAV design requires them and when the expanded data size and trust boundaries have been reviewed.
Verify that compression is actually working
After Apache has been reloaded, test a response whose MIME type is in the rule. Use a client that explicitly advertises gzip, then inspect the response headers at the public endpoint.
- Open the browser’s developer tools and select the Network panel.
- Request an HTML, CSS, or JavaScript resource that is served by the configured Apache container.
- Inspect the response headers for a gzip content-encoding indication and confirm that the resource’s content type matches the configured list.
- Repeat the request from a client or test tool that does not advertise gzip. The response should not be labeled as gzip for that request.
- If a proxy or cache is present, inspect the headers after the response has passed through it and check that
Vary: Accept-Encodingis present and honored.
Do not judge success only by a smaller browser “transferred” number. Browser panels may display decoded and transferred sizes differently, and a response may be served from cache. Confirm the headers and the request path first, then compare transfer behavior under the same cache conditions.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Apache reports an unknown directive | The module is not loaded, or the directive is not allowed in that context | Have the administrator load mod_deflate and place the rule in the server or virtual-host configuration, or enable the permitted override for .htaccess |
| The configuration test fails after editing | Syntax, quoting, or placement error in the edited container | Revert the last change, validate the configuration, and add the directive again in the active container |
| HTML is compressed but CSS or JavaScript is not | The response MIME type does not match any token in the list | Inspect the actual response content type and add the appropriate text MIME type only if it is a format you intend to compress |
| Images show no size reduction | They are already compressed or intentionally excluded | Leave GIF, JPEG, and PNG exclusions in place; compression is not beneficial merely because a file is downloadable |
| One client works and another fails | Content-encoding negotiation or an intermediary cache | Compare the clients’ accepted encodings and verify that the edge response carries and honors Vary: Accept-Encoding |
| Compression appears at the origin but disappears publicly | Reverse proxy, cache, or another front-end layer | Inspect the client-facing response and configure the intermediary to preserve the negotiated representation and variation metadata |
| A security review flags compressed authenticated pages | Potential TLS compression side channel | Identify whether secrets and attacker-controlled text share a response and narrow or disable compression for the affected response class |
Operational checklist
- Module: Apache has
mod_deflateloaded. - Scope: The directive is in the active server, virtual-host, directory, or permitted
.htaccesscontext. - Selection: MIME scoping is used unless broad filtering is justified.
- Types: The configured list covers the site’s actual HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML, and plain-text response types.
- Exclusions: Common pre-compressed images are excluded when a broad rule is used.
- Negotiation: Clients that advertise gzip receive gzip; clients that do not are not mislabeled.
- Caching:
Vary: Accept-Encodingis correct at every proxy or cache boundary. - Security: TLS responses containing secrets or attacker-influenced data have been assessed for BREACH-family exposure.
- Change control: Apache’s configuration is validated before reload, and the public response is checked afterward.
Practical recommendation
For most Apache sites, begin with the MIME-scoped directive and the text types the application actually serves. It provides an explicit boundary around compression and avoids treating already-compressed images as optimization targets. Use SetOutputFilter DEFLATE only in a controlled container where broad behavior, exclusions, cache variation, and TLS information-disclosure risks have all been reviewed. The important result is not merely that a filter is enabled; it is that the right representation is negotiated for each client and remains correct through every proxy or cache in the delivery path.
