Microsoft Edge on Windows does not currently include a regular Settings switch named Mobile site or Tablet site. To preview a mobile or tablet layout on a PC, use Edge DevTools’ Device Emulation feature. It changes the viewport and can also emulate mobile rendering, touch input, device pixel ratio, orientation, and—when necessary—a mobile user-agent string.
Keep DevTools open while testing. Microsoft’s proposed browser-window emulation feature that would work without DevTools is not yet in development.
Enable a mobile or tablet layout in Edge
- Open the webpage you want to test in Microsoft Edge.
- Right-click anywhere on the page and select Inspect.
- In DevTools, click Toggle device emulation in the Activity Bar. You can also open the DevTools menu (…) and select Device Emulation.
- The page opens in the Device Emulation pane, initially using Responsive Viewport Mode.
- Open the Device list and select a phone or tablet profile.
The emulated device controls the viewport dimensions. The available preset names can differ between Edge and DevTools versions, so do not rely on a particular phone or tablet appearing in the list.
Choose an exact phone or tablet size
You do not need to use a preset. To test a particular screen size:

- Leave the Device Emulation toolbar in Responsive Viewport Mode.
- Enter a width and height in the numeric boxes, or drag the viewport handles.
- Resize the viewport until the page reaches the layout you want to inspect.
Edge accepts arbitrary numeric width and height values. If the emulated viewport is larger than the available DevTools window, Edge scales it down visually; the emulated dimensions remain the dimensions you entered.
Make Edge use mobile rendering and touch input
A narrow viewport alone is not always enough. Some websites choose their layout based on mobile rendering or respond differently to touch and mouse events.
If Device Type is not visible in the toolbar, select More options > Add device type. Then choose the option that matches your test:

For a genuine mobile-layout test, select Mobile or Mobile (no touch). Selecting Desktop or Desktop (touch) can leave the site using desktop rendering even when the viewport is narrow.

Rotate the emulated phone or tablet
Click Rotate in the Device Emulation toolbar to switch between portrait and landscape orientation. The button is hidden when the toolbar is too narrow. Widen the DevTools window if it is missing, or use the Sensors tool to change orientation.
Change the emulated pixel density
To test how a page behaves at a different device pixel ratio:
- Open More options in the Device Emulation toolbar.
- Select Add device pixel ratio.
- Choose 1, 2, or 3.
The documented default is 2. To remove the override, select More options > Remove device pixel ratio.
Jump to a site’s responsive breakpoints
Edge can display the CSS media-query breakpoints that a page exposes:

- Select More options > Show media queries.
- Look above the emulated viewport for the displayed
max-width,min-width, and combinedmin-width/max-widthbreakpoints. - Click a breakpoint to resize the viewport to that width.
This is useful when a page changes from a desktop navigation bar to a hamburger menu only at a specific width. A site may not switch layouts at the exact width of a named phone preset.
Override the user-agent string when the site still detects a desktop
Some websites do not rely mainly on CSS breakpoints. They choose content or layout based on the browser’s user-agent string. Selecting a phone profile does not automatically guarantee that every site will interpret the request as coming from a mobile browser.
To override the user agent:
- In DevTools, open More tools (+) > Network conditions.
- In the User agent section, clear Use browser default.
- Choose a predefined value from the menu initially labeled Custom, or type a value in Enter a custom user agent text box.
- Reload the webpage if the site does not update its layout.
Sites that use user-agent client hints may need a custom emulated device configured under Settings > Devices. User-agent overriding is separate from changing the viewport and device type.

Create a custom device profile

- Open the device dropdown and select Edit.
- In the device list, select Edit again.
- In DevTools Settings > Devices (Emulated Devices), click Add custom device.
- Enter a device name, screen width, and screen height.
- Optionally enter the device pixel ratio, user-agent string, and user-agent type.
- Click Add.
The profile then appears in the Device dropdown. A new custom device defaults to the Mobile device type unless you choose another type.
Optional: simulate a slower mobile connection
Network and CPU throttling is not required to display a mobile layout. It is useful only when you also want to observe loading behavior under mobile-like conditions.
Use the Device Emulation toolbar’s Throttle list. The documented options include:

If the Throttle list is missing, widen the Device Toolbar. Some controls are hidden when the toolbar is too narrow.

Fixes when the layout does not change

What Device Emulation does not reproduce
Device Emulation is a practical first check for responsive design, but it is not the same as running the page on a phone or tablet. It does not run the page on a mobile CPU and cannot reproduce every hardware, browser, sensor, input, or rendering characteristic. For final testing—especially for touch gestures, performance, screen behavior, and device-specific bugs—check the site on an actual mobile device as well.
FAQ
Does Edge have a permanent mobile-site setting on Windows?
No. The current Microsoft-documented method is DevTools > Device Emulation. Edge does not currently provide a normal browser Settings switch that permanently changes any website to mobile or tablet mode.
Why does a narrow Edge window still show the desktop version?
The site may use a breakpoint you have not reached, desktop rendering may still be selected, or the site may detect the user-agent string. Try a displayed media-query breakpoint, select Mobile or Mobile (no touch), and use Network conditions for a user-agent override if needed.

Should I choose Mobile or Mobile (no touch)?
Choose Mobile to test touch events and touch-specific behavior. Choose Mobile (no touch) when you want the mobile rendering but need to operate the page with a mouse and normal click events.
Can I use Edge mobile emulation without keeping DevTools open?
No. The current implementation requires DevTools to remain open. Microsoft’s proposed browser-window emulation feature that would remove this requirement is not yet in development.
Does choosing a phone preset always send a mobile user-agent?
Not necessarily. Viewport and device emulation are separate from a user-agent override. If a site depends on user-agent detection, open More tools (+) > Network conditions, clear Use browser default, and select or enter the required value.
The Bottom Line
To preview a mobile or tablet site layout in Edge on a PC, open the page, choose Inspect, enable Device Emulation, and select a phone or tablet profile. For the most reliable mobile-layout test, also set Device Type to Mobile or Mobile (no touch). Use viewport breakpoints, rotation, pixel-ratio settings, and a user-agent override only when the site’s behavior requires them.
