To enable Memcached for PrestaShop, install the Memcached daemon on your VPS, install the PHP Memcached extension for the PHP runtime serving the shop, bind the daemon to a private interface, select Memcached on PrestaShop’s Performance page, and verify the web runtime can load the extension. Installing only the daemon does not make PrestaShop use it.
The exact package names, service unit, PHP version, bind address, and port depend on your Linux distribution and PrestaShop release. Treat the procedure below as a controlled setup: confirm the stack first, make one configuration change at a time, and verify from the web SAPI rather than relying only on an SSH command.
What Memcached changes in a PrestaShop installation
Memcached is a server-side, distributed cache. PrestaShop can store eligible cached data there instead of rebuilding the same results repeatedly. The distributed design is particularly useful when more than one application server needs to read the same cache service.
There are two separate components:
- Memcached daemon: the server process that holds cache items in memory and accepts connections.
- PHP Memcached extension: the client used by PHP applications such as PrestaShop to connect to that daemon.
The daemon by itself does not accelerate an application. As the Memcached Server Guide explains, applications must be programmed to use the service, which is why the PHP extension and the PrestaShop backend selection are both required.

Memcached is not a replacement for database storage, page generation, or PHP opcode caching. It is a volatile cache layer. A restart, eviction, or cache flush can remove entries, so the shop must continue to work correctly when the cache is empty.
Check the VPS and PrestaShop prerequisites
Use a Unix or Linux VPS where you have enough administrative access to install packages, change service configuration, restart PHP, and keep Memcached on a private network. The web server can be Apache or Nginx, but the PHP runtime used by that web server must be compatible with the installed PrestaShop release.

PrestaShop 8 documentation lists PHP 7.2 or later, MySQL 5.6 or later, and at least 256 MB of RAM dedicated to PHP for its documented setup. The 256 MB figure is a PHP requirement or recommendation, not a target Memcached allocation. Check the requirements for your installed release before applying those figures to a production shop.
Back up before changing the backend
Take a configuration backup and record the current cache method. If the new backend fails, you should be able to return to the previous method without guessing which setting changed. Installing Memcached does not require deleting existing cache files.
Install the Memcached daemon
Debian or Ubuntu
The Memcached project recommends using the distribution package because the operating system manages dependencies and security updates. On Debian or Ubuntu, update package metadata and install the daemon:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install memcachedThe package may create a service automatically. Do not assume the service name or configuration path on every distribution; inspect the files installed by your VPS operating system and use its service manager to start the daemon, enable it at boot, and check its status.

Red Hat, Fedora, and other distributions
Use the distribution’s package manager and repository package rather than compiling an untracked build. Package names, repository availability, service units, and configuration locations differ by release. Confirm which package supplies the Memcached daemon, then use the operating system’s documented commands to start it and apply updates.
Confirm that the daemon is listening
After starting the service, check its status and listening sockets from the VPS. The listener should be reachable from the PHP host but not exposed unnecessarily to the public internet. If the daemon fails to start, read the service log before changing memory or network settings; a syntax error, occupied port, or permission problem should be fixed at its source.
Install the PHP Memcached extension for the web runtime
PrestaShop’s Performance documentation identifies the PHP Memcached PECL extension as an integration prerequisite. Install the extension supplied for the exact PHP version that runs the shop. Distribution package names vary, and a package installed for one PHP version will not necessarily load into another.
Distinguish CLI PHP from PHP-FPM or Apache PHP
SSH commands often invoke CLI PHP. The shop may instead run through PHP-FPM or an Apache module, with a different version and a different extension directory. A successful CLI check therefore does not prove that PrestaShop can use Memcached.
- Identify the PHP version and SAPI serving the virtual host.
- Install the matching distribution or PECL extension package.
- Enable the extension using the method provided by that PHP installation.
- Restart the relevant PHP-FPM pool or Apache service so the web workers reload PHP modules.
- Verify the module from the web runtime, not just from an SSH shell.
A CLI check can still be useful as a first diagnostic:
php -m | grep -i memcachedIf this prints nothing, the CLI extension is absent or disabled. If it prints memcached but PrestaShop still reports that the option is unavailable, inspect the web SAPI separately. Package and service names are distribution- and version-specific, so use the files and commands shipped with your VPS image.

Restart only the service that owns the PHP workers
Restart PHP-FPM when Nginx proxies requests to PHP-FPM. Restart the appropriate Apache service when Apache loads PHP directly or proxies to its own PHP-FPM configuration. Restarting an unrelated CLI package will not reload the module used by the shop. Plan the restart during a maintenance window if the VPS hosts other applications.
Bind and size Memcached safely
Memcached is commonly deployed without application-level authentication. Keep it on localhost when PrestaShop and the daemon share a VPS, or on a private interface when the application is on another private host. Do not bind an unauthenticated cache daemon to a public address. Restrict firewall access to the application hosts and private network.
Understand the important daemon options

Choose a conservative item-storage value based on the VPS’s total memory and workload. The official documentation does not specify a universal percentage or a correct allocation for every shop. Leave headroom for PHP workers, the database, web-server buffers, filesystem cache, and traffic spikes. Increase the value only after observing the effect and confirming that the VPS remains stable.
Keep configuration changes reversible
Back up the package configuration before editing it. Record the bind address, port, memory value, and any logging flags. After editing, validate the service configuration, restart the daemon through the distribution’s service manager, and check its status and logs. If it fails, restore the last known-good file rather than stacking additional changes.
Select Memcached in PrestaShop
Once the daemon and PHP extension are ready, configure the application in the back office:

- Sign in to the PrestaShop back office with an account allowed to change performance settings.
- Open the Performance configuration page. The surrounding menu label can differ by PrestaShop release.
- Find the caching method section and select Memcached.
- Use Add server to create a Memcached server entry.
- Enter the daemon’s private host address or hostname and the port on which it is listening.
- Save the configuration, then confirm that the server appears in the configured list and is marked usable.
Use localhost or a private address only when that address is valid from the PHP process. A hostname that resolves on your SSH session may resolve differently inside a PHP-FPM environment. If the daemon is on another VPS, allow only the private application-to-cache path through the firewall.

Memcached is described by PrestaShop as especially effective with multiple servers because the cache service can be shared across application hosts. On a single VPS, it remains an option, but compare its memory and operational overhead with local file caching and the cache methods supported by your release.
Verify that PrestaShop can actually use Memcached
Check the web PHP configuration
In the back office, open Advanced Settings > Information and inspect the active server and PHP configuration. Confirm that the Memcached extension is visible there. This check is more reliable than a CLI module list because it describes the runtime handling browser requests.
PrestaShop also documents a phppsinfo.php checker. Upload it to the store directory only for the diagnostic period, open it through the appropriate protected URL, and inspect the PHP module and version information it reports. Protect the file from public access and remove it after the check so it cannot disclose server details.

- The daemon service is running and listening on the configured private interface.
- The PHP web SAPI shows the Memcached extension as loaded.
- The host and port saved in PrestaShop match the daemon configuration.
- Firewall rules permit the PHP host to reach that private endpoint.
- PrestaShop’s Performance page remains saved with Memcached selected after a new back-office session.
Only after these checks should you compare page behavior or server resource usage. The cited official documentation provides no universal latency percentage, throughput result, or conversion improvement. Any performance change depends on the shop’s modules, traffic, PHP workers, database, cacheable workload, and memory pressure.

Choose Memcached when the extension is available, the cache service can remain private, and the shop benefits from a shared cache across application servers. Choose a simpler local method when the VPS is a single host and operating another daemon would consume scarce memory or add unnecessary failure points.

Troubleshoot the most common failures
Memcached is not listed in the Performance page
- Check whether the web SAPI has the PHP Memcached extension loaded.
- Confirm that the extension matches the PHP version serving PrestaShop.
- Restart PHP-FPM or Apache after enabling the module.
- Review the PrestaShop release requirements and host support.
A CLI result alone cannot establish that the back office can load the module.
The daemon is running, but PrestaShop cannot connect
- Compare the saved host and port with the daemon’s actual bind address and listening port.
- Test connectivity from the web server or PHP host, not from an unrelated workstation.
- Check private-network firewall rules and security groups.
- Inspect service logs for bind failures or rejected connections.
Do not solve a connection problem by exposing the daemon publicly. Correct the private route or firewall rule instead.
The extension appears loaded, but the shop behaves as before
- Re-open the Performance page and verify Memcached is still the selected method.
- Confirm the server entry was saved and points to the intended daemon.
- Check that the application is not bypassing the cache because of a module, development mode, or invalid configuration.
- Observe PHP, database, and cache resource behavior over representative traffic rather than judging from one page load.
Memcached does not guarantee a visible speed increase on every shop. A workload dominated by uncached database queries, slow third-party modules, or network latency may need a different optimization.
The VPS runs out of memory after enabling it
Reduce the item-storage allocation and leave more headroom for PHP and the database. Remember that -m controls item storage, not every byte used by the process or the rest of the VPS. If the host remains constrained, return to the previous cache method and reassess the workload before re-enabling Memcached.
Cache entries disappear after a restart
Plan for an empty cache. Rebuilding entries after a restart is normal for a volatile cache; it should not affect the correctness of catalog, cart, order, or account data. Investigate repeated restarts, evictions, or memory pressure if the warm-up cost becomes operationally significant.

Production checklist
- Record the PrestaShop and PHP versions and confirm compatibility.
- Back up the current cache configuration.
- Install the Memcached daemon from the VPS distribution repository.
- Install the PHP Memcached extension for the web-serving PHP runtime.
- Restart the PHP service that executes the shop and verify the module from that runtime.
- Bind Memcached to localhost or a private interface and restrict firewall access.
- Set a conservative item-storage value with RAM reserved for PHP, the database, and the operating system.
- Select Memcached in the Performance page and add the correct private host and port.
- Check Advanced Settings > Information or the documented
phppsinfo.phpchecker. - Watch logs and resource usage during normal traffic, and keep a rollback path.
This sequence separates installation, PHP integration, network security, application selection, and verification. If one layer fails, test that layer rather than changing all settings at once.
