League of Legends no longer works like many older guides suggest. In the current client, the dependable way to watch a completed game is to download its replay from the End of Game screen or Match History, then select Watch Replay. Riot has also redirected live-game access from ranked leaderboards toward a player’s Match History and available replays.
For professional matches, use the official LoL Esports destination for live broadcasts and VODs. The instructions below explain each route, what is available, how replay expiry works, and what to do when the old eye-shaped Spectate control is missing.
What “Spectator Mode” means in the current League client
There are now several different ways to watch League of Legends, and they should not be treated as interchangeable:

.roflreplay of a completed match, viewed through the League client. - Friend’s ranked replay: a replay downloaded from that player’s Match History when Riot makes it available.
- Live ranked spectating: the older leaderboard-based workflow that used an eye-shaped Spectate control. Riot’s Patch 25.23 notes say this is being replaced with a shortcut to the player’s Match History and replays.
- Professional broadcast: live games and recorded VODs provided through the official LoL Esports destination.
- Player-focused professional viewing: a Pro View experience documented by Riot historically, whose current availability must be checked on the present LoL Esports site.
Therefore, not seeing an eye icon on a ranked leaderboard does not necessarily indicate a broken installation. It can reflect the client’s current design: open the player’s Match History and use a replay that is offered there.

How to download and watch your own replay
Method 1: use the End of Game screen
- Finish a match and remain on the End of Game screen.
- Look in the upper-right area for the download control beside Advanced Details. Riot’s support instruction specifically places the button there.
- Select the download control and wait for the replay to finish downloading.
- After the
.roflfile is available, the same control changes to Watch Replay. - Select Watch Replay to launch the match inside the League client.
The download is a replay of the match you just completed, not a rendered video file. You review it through the game client, using its camera and timeline controls.
Method 2: use Match History
- Open your profile in the League client.
- Open Match History.
- Locate the completed game you want to review.
- Use the replay download control for that match.
- When the control changes to Watch Replay, select it to start the replay.
This route is useful when you left the End of Game screen, want to revisit an older recent game, or need to find a match by its history entry rather than by the post-game screen.
Replay availability, the 20-game limit, and patch expiry
Riot says the client exposes replays only for the latest 20 games. That is a rolling availability limit, so an older match can disappear from the client even if you remember playing it recently.

Replay files also last only for the length of the patch cycle. A replay from an earlier patch may stop working after the next game update. If a match matters for coaching, dispute review, content creation, or personal records, download and inspect it before patch day rather than assuming it will remain playable indefinitely.
- Need to watch it soon? Download it as soon as possible from End of Game or Match History.
- Need a durable video? Use the client’s Highlights recording feature to export selected moments as ordinary
.webmvideo files. - Patch changed since the match? Try the replay before spending time troubleshooting. An expired patch-cycle replay may no longer launch normally.
- More than 20 games ago? It may no longer be offered in the client, even if the match appears in some account history views.
How to watch a friend’s ranked replay
Riot’s replay FAQ describes a replay workflow for a friend’s ranked game. It does not promise that every live game is publicly spectatable.
- Open your friend’s profile in the League client.
- Choose the friend’s Match History tab.
- Find the ranked match you want to view.
- Use the available replay download control.
- After the download completes and the control becomes Watch Replay, select it.
If no download control appears, the match may be outside the client’s available replay window, may have crossed a patch boundary, or may not be a replay Riot exposes through that profile. Do not interpret the absence of a button as proof that the player is currently in a live game you can watch.

Why the old live Spectate button is missing
Older instructions often tell you to open a ranked leaderboard, find an eye icon, and select Spectate. Riot’s Patch 25.23 notes say that direct live spectating from ranked leaderboards is being replaced by a shortcut to the player’s Match History and replays.

The practical current workflow is:
- Open the ranked leaderboard or the relevant player profile.
- Open that player’s Match History.
- Look for a downloadable replay on the match entry.
- Download it and use Watch Replay after the download completes.
This is a completed-game replay workflow, not an assurance of real-time access. A replay may be available after the match while a live game has no public spectator option.
Watching professional League matches
Use the official LoL Esports destination for live games and VODs
The supported general-purpose route for professional League is the official LoL Esports destination. It provides live broadcasts and recorded VODs, so you do not need an in-client .rofl file for a tournament match.

Riot’s Riot Mobile documentation describes an Esports section where you can configure favorite leagues, tune in live for Esports drops, and catch up on VODs of recent matches. The exact mobile labels can change, but the destination is intended for both live viewing and replayed broadcasts.

What Pro View means today
Riot’s Pro View FAQ documents a player-focused experience that required signing in to LoL Esports with a Riot Account, opening the Pro View tab, and using features such as real-time highlights and live-match or VOD viewing. That documentation is historical and does not establish that Pro View is offered in 2026, under what name, or at what price.
If you are looking for player POVs now, open the current LoL Esports site and check whether a Pro View option is actually displayed for the event. If it is not, use the official broadcast or VOD instead of relying on an old guide or an inactive product page.

Replay camera and review controls
Once a replay is open, the client provides an observer-style view rather than a normal post-game scoreboard. Riot documents several useful hotkeys for moving between champions and controlling the camera.

Use the wide observer view to understand map-wide decisions, then lock onto an individual champion when you need to study pathing, positioning, or a mechanical sequence. These controls affect how you review the replay; they do not turn a recorded match into a live spectator session.
Saving a replay moment as a shareable video
Client replays use the .rofl format and remain tied to the replay system and patch cycle. For a clip you want to keep or send to someone else, record the selected moment as a Highlight instead.
- Open the relevant match replay.
- Use the replay controls to move to the play you want to preserve.
- Start the client’s Highlights recording for the selected moment.
- Stop the recording when the moment is complete.
- Locate the resulting
.webmfile and share it as an ordinary video.
Riot’s replay FAQ says replays show gameplay but do not include in-game chat. A Highlight is therefore best treated as a visual gameplay clip, not a complete transcript of team communication.
Troubleshooting common spectator and replay problems
There is no download button on End of Game
- Confirm that you are still looking at the End of Game screen and that you checked the upper-right area beside Advanced Details.
- If you already left that screen, open your profile’s Match History and find the same game there.
- Check whether the match is still among the latest 20 games available to the client.
- Consider whether the game crossed a patch update. A replay from an earlier patch may no longer work after the next update.
The button says Watch Replay but nothing useful happens
- Confirm that the League client, rather than a browser VOD, is launching the replay.
- Retry from the match’s Match History entry.
- If the game is from an earlier patch, treat patch-cycle expiry as the leading explanation rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
- For a match that is still playable, save important moments as Highlights so you have a
.webmcopy.
A friend’s match has no replay control
- Make sure you opened the friend’s profile and its Match History, not only your own history.
- Verify that the entry is a ranked game, since Riot’s FAQ specifically describes ranked replays in this workflow.
- Check the latest-20-game and patch-cycle limits.
- Remember that a missing replay control does not create a live spectate link.
The leaderboard has no eye-shaped Spectate icon
This can be expected under the current design. Riot’s Patch 25.23 notes describe the leaderboard change, so use the player’s Match History and any replay control shown there. If you need a live professional match, switch to the official LoL Esports broadcast rather than searching the ranked leaderboard for a replacement eye icon.
You want to watch a professional player’s exact POV
Start with the official event broadcast or VOD. Then check the current LoL Esports site for a Pro View option. The historical Pro View instructions are not evidence that the feature remains available in 2026.

A practical workflow for coaches, players, and viewers
For reviewing your own performance
- Download the replay before leaving the End of Game screen when possible.
- Start with the observer-wide view to identify the first major change in the match.
- Use champion selection keys to inspect the relevant player.
- Double-press that champion’s key to lock the camera.
- Use middle-mouse dragging to inspect nearby vision, lanes, and objective areas.
- Record only the moments worth keeping as Highlights before the patch changes.
For reviewing a friend’s ranked game
- Open the friend’s profile and Match History.
- Download the replay while it remains available.
- Review the game in the client rather than expecting a live feed.
- Export important teaching moments as
.webmHighlights.
For following esports
- Use the official LoL Esports destination for the live schedule and broadcast.
- Open the VOD when you need to watch a completed match.
- On mobile, configure favorite leagues in the Esports section if you want live-event notifications or drops.
- Check the current site before assuming a historically documented Pro View product is still offered.
Important limitations to remember
- A client replay is not a permanent archive: the client exposes only the latest 20 games and replay files follow the patch cycle.
- A replay is not the same as a live spectator connection. The current leaderboard workflow points toward Match History and completed-game replays.
- Friend access is described for ranked replays through Match History; it is not a guarantee that every game or every account is publicly viewable live.
- In-game chat is not included in Riot’s replay playback.
- A
.roflfile is a client replay, while a Highlight is a.webmvideo intended for ordinary sharing. - Professional viewing is handled through LoL Esports broadcasts and VODs, with any player-focused Pro View option subject to the current site’s availability.
