To keep every item after death, stop your Hytale server and edit the relevant world’s config.json. In its Death settings, set ItemsLossMode to None. Set the existing item-loss and durability-loss percentage fields to 0, validate the JSON, and restart the server. Because Hytale has not published an official reference for this key, verify the result in-game after every server update.
What the keep-inventory setting does
Hytale’s death penalty is controlled by a setting named ItemsLossMode. The value determines whether a player loses nothing, loses everything, or loses a configured percentage of items when dying:

For a conventional keep-inventory setup, use None. Hosting guides also recommend setting the item-loss and durability-loss percentage fields already present in the file to 0. Those percentages matter when Configured is selected; setting them to zero provides an additional safeguard when you want a complete keep-everything policy.
The option is stored per world in a file normally located at universe/worlds/<world>/config.json. The exact scope is not settled: one hosting guide reports that settings are loaded at server start and apply globally, while another describes them as world-specific. Treat each world file as authoritative, edit every world that should use the rule, and test the behavior on your own server.

Before changing the file
Get file access
You need either a hosting control panel with a file manager or shell/FTP access to the server directory. In a panel, the relevant controls are usually named Files, File Manager, or Config Files. On a self-hosted machine, locate the server’s universe directory.
Stop the server completely
Use the panel’s Stop button or stop command and wait until the console reports that the process has exited. Do not edit while the server is running. A running instance can rewrite configuration during shutdown or save operations and silently overwrite your change.

Download or copy the current config.json before editing. Give the copy a useful name such as config.json.before-keep-inventory. If the server refuses to start, restoring this file is faster than reconstructing the original settings.
Identify every world
List the folders under universe/worlds/. Each world normally has its own directory and its own config.json. If your server has a lobby, event map, or separate survival map, decide whether keep inventory should apply there as well. Do not assume that changing the active world automatically changes the others.
Find the correct section in config.json
Open the target world’s file in a plain-text editor or the hosting panel’s editor. Search for GameplayConfig. The Death object is not necessarily included in a new file, so its absence does not mean the server lacks the feature.

When a Death object already exists, edit its values rather than creating a second object. Duplicate keys or duplicate Death blocks can make the file invalid or cause one value to override another unpredictably.

Guides place a newly added block in slightly different positions: directly below the GameplayConfig entry or immediately after a line such as "GameplayConfig": "Default". Both descriptions point to the same requirement: the block belongs inside the world configuration’s gameplay settings, not at the end of an unrelated section. Preserve the surrounding structure and commas.
Set keep inventory
Edit an existing Death block
If your file already contains a Death section, change ItemsLossMode to the exact, case-sensitive value None. Set the existing item-loss percentage and durability-loss percentage properties to the number 0 (not the text "0"). Do not rename those properties; use the names supplied by your server build.
Add the block when it is missing
If there is no Death object, add one inside the gameplay configuration while retaining every other entry. A minimal structural example is:

Your file may contain additional gameplay properties and percentage fields. Keep those properties intact, and set the item-loss and durability-loss percentages to 0 if they are present. Do not paste a second copy of the entire file over your existing configuration.

JSON is strict. A comma is required between sibling properties, but not after the final property in an object. Use straight quotation marks, and do not add comments. Smart quotes copied from a word processor will invalidate the file.
Repeat for other worlds
Apply the same change to each world that should have the rule. If the server proves that the option is global on your build, identical files still avoid surprises when worlds are loaded independently or migrated later.
Validate the JSON before restarting
Validation catches syntax errors before they prevent the server from starting. On a machine with Python installed, run this from the server directory:
python -m json.tool universe/worlds/<world>/config.jsonA valid file is printed in formatted form and exits without an error. If your path contains spaces, surround it with quotation marks. You can also use any trusted JSON validator that does not upload confidential server files.
Common validation errors include a missing comma before Death, an extra comma after the last property, mismatched braces, and accidental duplicate quotation marks. Compare the edited file with your backup and correct only the changed section. Never delete unrelated gameplay settings merely to make the parser succeed.

Save, restart, and test in the game
- Save the validated file and confirm the panel reports that the write completed.
- Start or restart the Hytale server. The setting is read during startup, so a restart is required.
- Join the world after the server is fully ready. Avoid testing during an upgrade or while plugins/mods are still loading.
- Carry a low-value item, record its quantity and durability, and die in a controlled location.
- Respawn and check the inventory, hotbar, armor, and the item’s durability. Also inspect the death location to ensure no duplicate drop was created.
- Repeat the test in every world where you changed the file. A successful test in one world does not prove that another world uses the same scope.
If items still disappear, stop the server and inspect the file that belongs to the world you actually entered. Confirm the spelling and capitalization of ItemsLossMode, confirm that its value is exactly None, and check the startup log for a configuration parse warning.
Choosing a different death penalty

The percentages are intended for Configured mode. If you switch modes, recheck the values so the resulting behavior matches your server rules. Exact field names and placement can vary between builds; copy the names already present in your file rather than inventing new ones.
World scope: why reports conflict
Published hosting instructions disagree about whether the setting is global or per world. One explanation says the server reads the option at startup and applies it to all players; another says each world reads its own configuration. Hytale has not published official documentation confirming the key, accepted values, or scope.
The safest operating procedure is therefore:
- Edit every world’s
config.jsonwhen you want a consistent rule. - Restart after the last edit, not after each individual file.
- Test a death in each world, including worlds that are loaded only when a player travels to them.
- Keep a note of which files were changed so a future world reset does not silently restore default penalties.
Troubleshooting failed changes
The server will not start
Restore the backup and start the server to confirm that the problem is the edit. Then reapply the change carefully and run a JSON validator first. Most startup failures are syntax errors, a misplaced brace, or a typo in a key name.
The setting appears to be ignored
- Verify that the server was stopped before saving and fully restarted afterward.
- Check that you edited the active world, not a similarly named template or backup folder.
- Search for a second
ItemsLossModeentry and remove the duplicate. - Confirm the value is
None, with a capitalNand no trailing spaces inside the quotes. - Check whether a plugin or mod rewrites gameplay configuration during startup.
- Test with a newly created world to determine whether the behavior is world-specific.
Only some items are retained
Look for an existing Death block using Configured or another mode. Set the mode to None and set the existing item-loss and durability-loss percentages to 0. Check armor and hotbar items separately; a partial result may indicate that another system is applying a penalty.

The file keeps reverting
Make sure the server is offline while editing. Some panels save asynchronously, so wait for the save confirmation before closing the editor. If the file changes after every restart, compare timestamps and startup logs, then temporarily disable configuration-management plugins or mods to identify the writer.
One world keeps a different rule
Apply the change to that world’s own file and test again. Do not rely on a global setting reported by another host’s guide; scope may differ by Hytale release or hosting environment.
Should you use a mod instead?
A community mod named Keep Inventory Fixed is listed on CurseForge and is intended to remove death penalties. Its author warns that the original version could break the game by overwriting configuration assets and says a rewritten version was published. Directly editing the world configuration is the less invasive approach described by the available guides: it changes one documented-looking setting instead of replacing assets.
If you nevertheless install a mod, back up the entire server first, confirm that the mod matches your Hytale version, and test it on a disposable world. Remove the mod before diagnosing configuration behavior so you know which system controls death penalties.
Maintain the setting after updates
The key name, accepted values, or file placement could change in a future Hytale release. No official Hytale documentation currently confirms this setting, and the current behavior is based on third-party hosting instructions and community material. After every game or server update:

- Perform a controlled death test in each affected world.
Keep the original backup until the updated server has passed those checks. If an update removes or renames the setting, do not guess at a replacement key; wait for version-specific documentation or inspect the generated configuration from a fresh test world.
