Experimental gameplay in Minecraft Bedrock is enabled on the world, not with a Bedrock server.properties switch. Turn on the required experiments in a Bedrock client, open the world once so the setting is saved, upload that world to the server, and set level-name to the uploaded folder’s exact name. Back up first: enabling experiments is effectively permanent for that world, disables achievements, and can cause compatibility or corruption problems.
What “experimental gameplay” means on Bedrock
Bedrock experiments are world-level feature flags. They allow Mojang’s unfinished or still-changing systems to run in a particular world, such as creator APIs or other features that are not yet enabled by default. The setting is stored with the world data created by the Bedrock client. A dedicated server loads that saved world; it does not provide an independent Bedrock switch that can be added to server.properties.
This distinction explains why changing a server configuration file alone does not activate experiments. The server must receive a world in which the toggles have already been selected and saved. If the server starts a different folder, it will load that world’s own settings instead.
Important consequences before you begin
- Experiments cannot be turned off again for that world. Treat the change as permanent, even if a later client build changes the way the toggle is displayed.
- Achievements are disabled. In Bedrock, enabling an experiment removes achievement eligibility for the affected world.
- Backups are essential. An unfinished feature can crash, stop working after an update, or damage a world. Changing an existing world carries a particularly serious corruption risk.
- Toggle names change. The available experiments depend on the Bedrock version, platform and feature rollout. A guide written for an earlier release may show labels you do not have.
- All players need a compatible client. If a feature changes blocks, entities, scripts or commands, players joining with a client that does not support the world’s content may see errors, missing content or be unable to join.
Make a copy of the world before opening the experiment screen. Keep the untouched copy outside the server’s active worlds directory and give it a date-based name so it cannot be confused with the working copy.

Prepare the world and server
Confirm that you are using Bedrock
This procedure applies to Minecraft Bedrock Edition and Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server. Instructions that tell you to add an experiment property to server.properties generally describe Java Edition. Do not transfer that Java-only method to a Bedrock server.
Choose the experiments deliberately
Write down the feature or features you actually need before opening the world settings. Enabling every available toggle makes troubleshooting harder and increases the number of unfinished systems that can affect saves. The experiment screen in your current client is the authoritative list for that installation.

Check the server version and storage access
The server and the client that saves the world should be on compatible Bedrock releases. You also need permission to download and upload world files and to edit the server’s server.properties. Stop the server before replacing its active world; overwriting files while the process is running can leave a partial save.

- Create or open the world in a Bedrock client. From the Play screen, create a new world or open the world’s settings. The exact menu wording can differ slightly by platform and release.
- Open the Experiments section. Select the toggles required for your project. Read the warning shown by the client before accepting it. The warning is intentional: the world may become incompatible with future updates and achievements will no longer be available.
- Save the settings by loading the world. Start the world and enter it once. Allow the initial terrain and player data to finish saving, then leave the world normally. This first load ensures the experiment state is written into the world files rather than remaining only in an editor screen.
- Set the intended game mode and difficulty. Before exporting, make sure the world’s game mode and difficulty match what you intend to run on the server. One commonly published workflow recommends this check; it prevents a newly uploaded map from starting with settings that differ from the server plan.
- Stop the Bedrock server. Do not replace a world while the server is writing chunks or player data.
- Upload the world directory. Place the complete world folder in the server’s worlds directory. Keep the directory structure intact; do not upload only selected region, database or behavior-pack files.
- Set
level-nameto the exact folder name. Editserver.propertiesand make the value match the uploaded directory character for character, including capitalization, spaces, punctuation and underscores. For example, if the folder is namedSkyLab_Experiments, uselevel-name=SkyLab_Experiments. - Save the configuration and start the server. Watch the console for the world-loading message. The server should load the uploaded map rather than generate a new default world.
Enable experiments on an existing server world
Changing a world that already contains players, builds and automation is riskier than creating a new map. Use a maintenance window and tell players not to connect until validation is complete.
- Stop the server and download the complete world. Preserve the original folder exactly as it appears on the server, including its current name.
- Create and verify a backup. Make at least one independent copy before opening the world in a client. If your control panel offers snapshots, retain a snapshot as well as a downloaded archive. Do not proceed until you can identify which copy is the untouched rollback.
- Open the copy in a Bedrock client. Import or place the downloaded world where the client can see it, then open its world settings.
- Enable the required experiments and accept the warning. Do this only on the copy. Because the change is effectively one-way, the original server backup is your recovery path.
- Load the world once and exit cleanly. Enter the map, wait for it to finish loading, and leave through the normal menu so the changed metadata is saved.
- Check a representative area. Visit important bases, redstone systems, farms, command areas and custom content before uploading. Look for missing blocks, script errors, crashes or obvious chunk problems while the backup remains available.
- Replace the server copy during the maintenance window. Upload the tested world folder to the server’s worlds directory. Keep the old server folder outside the active location rather than deleting it immediately.
- Confirm
level-name. If you retained the original directory name, leave the matching value inserver.properties. If the uploaded folder was renamed, updatelevel-nameto that new exact name. - Start and test with an operator account. Confirm that the expected spawn, builds, inventories and experiment-dependent features are present before reopening the server to everyone.
How the level-name setting controls the result
Bedrock Dedicated Server uses level-name as the folder name of the world it should load. It is not a display title and it is not the name shown in the client’s world list. The value must correspond to the directory on disk.

If the server creates a fresh world after your upload, stop it and inspect the worlds directory first. The usual causes are a misspelled value, an extra nested folder created during extraction, or an upload that put the world beside—not inside—the directory the server scans.
Why a Java Edition recipe does not work
Some Minecraft documentation describes an experiments entry in server.properties. That approach belongs to Java Edition. Bedrock stores experiment choices with each world, so adding a similarly named property to a Bedrock configuration file does not convert an ordinary Bedrock map into an experimental one. The reliable Bedrock sequence is client settings, one save/load, world upload, then an exact level-name match.

Verify that the server loaded the experimental world
Do not assume success merely because the process starts. Perform these checks in order:
- Confirm the server’s startup log identifies the folder named by
level-name. - Join with an operator account and check that your known spawn area and recent builds are present.
- Use the feature that required the experiment. For creator features, test the smallest safe example before deploying a large project.
- Ask a second player on the same Bedrock release to join. This can reveal client-version or content-pack problems that an operator account does not show.
- Stop and restart the server once more. A setting that works only until the first restart usually indicates that the wrong folder was edited or that files were not fully uploaded.
Experiment names and version changes
The experiment list is not fixed. Labels and availability can change as features move from testing into the normal game, are renamed, or are removed. Bedrock 26.20 patch notes, for example, identify toggles such as “Beta APIs” and “Upcoming Creator Features” for some 2026 features; that does not establish that those labels, or the same feature set, appear in every 26.20 build or later release.
Use the toggle names shown by the client version that will actually save the world. Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock experimental-features documentation and the Minecraft Wiki are useful references, but an indexed or cached page can describe an older list. When those references disagree with your client, record the client version and follow the current in-game screen. Recheck the list after a major update before opening the world again.
Troubleshoot common failures

Backup and rollback plan
A practical rollback plan has three distinct copies:
- Original: the world as it existed before any experiment was enabled.
- Working copy: the copy opened and modified in the Bedrock client.
- Server copy: the version currently deployed for players.
Name each copy with the world name, Bedrock version and date. Keep the original read-only or outside the server’s upload directory. If testing fails, stop the server, move the server copy out of the active worlds directory, restore the original folder, set level-name back to its exact name and start the server. A rollback restores the pre-experiment world; it does not turn experiments off inside the modified copy.
