On current iPhone software, Content & Privacy Restrictions are controlled from Settings → Screen Time. They let you block App Store purchases, hide built-in apps, filter websites, restrict privacy changes, and prevent changes to important device settings.
The switch is separate from the Screen Time passcode. Turning off the restrictions pauses the controls you configured; it does not erase them. Turning off the Screen Time passcode is a different action.
How to enable Content & Privacy Restrictions on your own iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Enter your Screen Time passcode if iPhone requests it.
If you have not created a Screen Time passcode, iPhone may not display a passcode prompt at this point. For controls that need protection from other users, create a Screen Time passcode from Settings → Screen Time → Lock Screen Time Settings, where available on your iOS version.

You can also enable the controls for the child’s own device from the same Family Sharing screen. A child cannot change a protected restriction without the Screen Time passcode. Changes to the child’s Screen Time passcode must be made on the parent or guardian’s device.
Before changing Family Sharing parental controls, update the devices in the family group. Different software versions can cause settings to sync inconsistently.

Disabling the master switch pauses the restrictions configured inside that section. It does not delete them. If you turn the switch on again later, those settings resume.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not confuse the restriction switch with the Screen Time passcode
These are separate controls:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Content & Privacy Restrictions | Turns the configured content, purchase, privacy, and device-setting restrictions on or off. |
| Turn Off Screen Time Passcode | Removes the passcode protection for Screen Time settings. |
To turn off the Screen Time passcode, use Settings → Screen Time → Change Screen Time Passcode → Turn Off Screen Time Passcode. This does not mean that Content & Privacy Restrictions have been disabled; check their separate switch.

“Sign out is not available due to restrictions”
A Screen Time passcode or restriction may be blocking Apple Account sign-out. Go to Settings → Screen Time → Change Screen Time Passcode → Turn Off Screen Time Passcode, then enter the passcode. If the problem remains, inspect the account-change restrictions.
The Apple Account name is gray in Settings
Go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions. Under Allow Changes To, tap Accounts and set it to Allow. Also check the other items in that section for settings set to Don’t Allow.
A child cannot change a setting
That is expected when the setting is protected. The parent or guardian must enter the Screen Time passcode. On a Family Sharing setup, change the child’s Screen Time settings from the organizer’s device rather than attempting to change them on the child’s iPhone.

The controls look different
Apple changes labels and available options between iOS releases. On current software, look for App Store, Media, Web, & Games, Allowed Apps & Features, Intelligence & Siri, and Allow Changes To → Accounts. The old Settings → General → Restrictions path is no longer the current iPhone path.

Exception requests are not arriving
iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 or later can allow children to request exceptions to certain Screen Time limits or restrictions. If requests are not reaching the parent, Apple recommends checking that all devices use the latest software, the parent’s Apple Account email is added to iMessage, iMessage has been used within the previous 30 days, Messages notifications are enabled, and iCloud Contacts are synchronized.
Some child controls are enabled by default, depending on the child’s age and country or region. Availability of individual controls can also vary by device, software version, language, and location.
