Enable Windows dark mode at Settings > Personalization > Colors, then set Choose your mode to Dark (or Custom for a mixture). That is the supported system-wide method. Hyper-V Manager and other older Windows 11 dialogs may still be white, because Microsoft does not require every desktop application or dialog to implement dark mode and does not document a Hyper-V-specific switch that forces them dark.
Turn on Windows 11 dark mode
The setting takes less than a minute and applies to Windows surfaces such as Start, the taskbar and Action Center. It is also the first step when you want to see whether Hyper-V Manager or another older dialog supports the current Windows theme.
- Open Settings. You can select it from Start or press
Windows + I. - Select Personalization, then Colors.
- Open the Choose your mode menu.
- Select Dark to use dark mode for Windows and supported applications, or select Custom if you want to choose light or dark behavior separately.
- Close and reopen the application or dialog you are testing. A window that was already open may not repaint immediately.
Microsoft Support’s color guidance includes an important qualification: “Additionally, not all applications support dark mode.” The global switch changes Windows surfaces, but it cannot add dark-mode code to an application that has no such implementation.

Before you start: what you need
You only need access to the Windows 11 Settings app and the application whose appearance you want to test. The documented procedure does not call for new hardware, a Hyper-V virtual machine change, a theme-patching utility or a paid add-on. Keep the application’s work saved before closing it, because a restart is the most reliable way to make it reread the color preference.

Dark mode is a presentation preference. It does not alter a virtual machine’s operating system, display resolution, graphics adapter, checkpoints, networking or storage. A white management dialog is therefore an appearance-compatibility issue, not evidence that a VM is misconfigured.
Dark versus Custom: which setting should you choose?

Custom does not force unsupported dialogs to become dark. It only separates the Windows-level choices; application support remains a separate issue. If you are diagnosing a problem, start with Dark because it gives you the simplest all-system test. Use Custom afterward if you deliberately want one Windows area light and another dark.
What happens in Hyper-V Manager?
After you select Dark and reopen Hyper-V Manager, some parts of the application may follow Windows while an older management window, wizard or confirmation dialog remains light. That result is expected when the particular dialog does not support the system theme.
Microsoft’s Windows color documentation explains the general application-support limitation, but the Microsoft guidance considered here does not document a separate Hyper-V Manager dark-mode toggle or a supported command that forces every Hyper-V dialog to use dark colors. The accurate conclusion is therefore limited: turn on Windows dark mode, then verify the Hyper-V windows you use; a light Hyper-V dialog can remain light because its application support is incomplete.
How to check Hyper-V without changing anything else
- Set Settings > Personalization > Colors > Choose your mode to Dark.
- Exit Hyper-V Manager completely. Close any open virtual-machine connection, settings window or wizard as well.
- Launch Hyper-V Manager again and open the exact window that concerns you, such as virtual-machine settings or a connection dialog.
- Record which windows changed and which stayed white. This distinguishes a supported dark surface from an unsupported legacy dialog.
If the main Hyper-V window and its dialog remain light, do not infer that the Windows setting failed. It may simply be an application that does not implement dark mode. Test more than one window before drawing a conclusion: a program can have a dark-capable shell and an older light property sheet, or the reverse.
Why some Windows 11 dialogs are still white
Windows dark mode is a preference, not a universal recoloring layer. Microsoft states that some applications have their own light/dark controls and that some applications do not support dark mode at all. A dialog can therefore remain light in several situations:
- The application has no dark theme for that window.
- The application has an independent appearance setting that is still set to Light.
- Only some windows in the application have been updated; older wizards or property sheets can use a different implementation.
- The Windows component has received dark-dialog support only in a particular update or gradual rollout.
These are support boundaries, not evidence that you selected the wrong Colors option. There is no documented Windows setting that guarantees every legacy desktop dialog will follow Dark.

Check for an application-level dark setting
When a dialog remains white, look in the application’s own preferences before changing Windows settings again. Common labels include Theme, Appearance, Color mode and Use system setting. If you see a Light/Dark choice, set it to Dark or to Use system setting, then restart the application.
Hyper-V Manager’s documented Windows instructions do not provide such a separate dark-mode control. For Hyper-V, the practical supported test ends with the Windows Colors setting and an application restart. For another legacy program, its own documentation is the authority. Do not assume that a setting named “theme” changes dialog chrome; some application themes affect only content, icons or editor panes.
Use Windows Update when a specific Microsoft dialog is expected to be dark
Microsoft has been adding dark styling to individual Windows components rather than introducing one switch for every legacy dialog. If a release note names the dialog you care about, install the applicable update and test again. Preview-update notes describe availability for a particular build; they are not a promise that every edition, channel or later configuration will look identical.

These examples answer a common question: why can one Microsoft dialog be dark while another remains white? Support is delivered per component and sometimes per dialog. A named exception, such as Task Manager’s Run new task or Properties window, is not a failure of your system-wide selection.

- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install updates offered for your device.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Reopen the application and test the named dialog again.
Do not use an update note for one component as proof that Hyper-V, another management console or every older dialog has also been converted. The notes above show targeted improvements, not a universal compatibility switch.
Windows themes are related to dark mode, but not the same thing
Windows also has a Themes page at Settings > Personalization > Themes. A theme can package or change the desktop background, colors, sounds and mouse cursor. It is useful for coordinating the overall desktop appearance, but applying a theme is not documented as a way to override an application that does not support dark dialogs.
For troubleshooting, treat the settings as two separate controls:

- Colors: chooses Windows Light, Dark or Custom behavior.
- Themes: changes a collection of personalization elements such as background, colors, sounds and cursor.
- Application settings: determine whether a particular program can render its own windows in dark mode.
Changing a theme can alter the selected color preference, so recheck Settings > Personalization > Colors afterward if the interface is not as expected. It still cannot guarantee a dark Hyper-V or legacy dialog. A theme download also does not add missing dark-mode support to an application; it changes the Windows personalization package.

If Windows surfaces are dark but the dialog is white
This pattern usually indicates an application-support gap. Confirm that the dialog belongs to the program you opened, close and relaunch that program, and look for an application-level appearance option. If none exists, there is no supported system setting that can promise a dark result for that window.
If the entire application stays light
Verify the exact path: Settings > Personalization > Colors, then Choose your mode > Dark. If you selected Custom, review each component choice rather than assuming Custom means all-dark. Reopen the application after changing the setting. Also check that a theme change did not select a different color configuration.
If only one Windows component differs from another
Check the Windows build and available updates. Microsoft’s File Explorer and Task Manager notes show that dark dialogs can arrive component by component and through gradual rollouts. A difference between two dialogs is therefore possible even when both are supplied by Microsoft.
If a theme change seemed to undo your selection
Return to Settings > Personalization > Colors and explicitly select Dark or Custom again. Themes control several personalization elements at once; they are not a replacement for verifying the color-mode choice.

If text or controls look wrong after switching
Check the same dialog in Light mode and compare its labels, buttons and selection states. If a legacy window has poor contrast or unreadable controls in either mode, keep the usable setting and report the issue through the application’s supported feedback channel. Do not install an unverified theme patch simply to recolor one window.
Can you force dark mode on every legacy dialog?
There is no Microsoft-documented, Hyper-V-specific procedure that forces all legacy dialogs dark. Registry edits, theme patchers and third-party utilities may change rendering, but they are not the supported Windows method and can create compatibility, update or accessibility problems. They also cannot guarantee that every dialog will be recolored correctly.

For a managed or production computer, stay with the supported sequence: choose Dark or Custom, use an application’s own theme setting when available, keep Windows and the application updated, and accept a light dialog when its implementation does not support dark mode. Use this sequence whenever you need to determine whether a white Hyper-V or Windows dialog can be changed:
- Set the system preference: choose Dark or Custom under Settings > Personalization > Colors.
- Restart the target application: close all of its windows, then reopen the exact dialog.
- Look for an app preference: use the program’s own Theme or Appearance control if it provides one.
- Identify the component: decide whether the window is Hyper-V, File Explorer, Task Manager or another application.
- Check Windows Update: targeted update notes may explain newly supported dialogs and their rollout status.
- Compare builds when needed: preview updates and gradual rollouts mean two Windows installations can behave differently.
- Stop at the support boundary: if the dialog remains light and has no app-level option, Windows does not provide a documented universal override for it.
What the supported result looks like
A successful configuration means Windows surfaces that support dark mode use dark colors, while compatible applications follow the preference. It does not mean every window on the desktop must be dark. In Hyper-V Manager, a light dialog after enabling Dark is consistent with Microsoft’s statement that not all applications support dark mode and with the absence of a documented Hyper-V force-dark setting.
The same principle explains Microsoft’s component-specific update notes: File Explorer and selected Task Manager dialogs have received explicit improvements, including named exceptions and rollout qualifications. Those changes are evidence of continuing updates, not a promise that unsupported legacy dialogs will change automatically.

There is no Microsoft-documented universal switch for that purpose. Registry edits, theme patchers and third-party utilities are unsupported and cannot guarantee correct rendering.

Should I choose Dark or Custom?
Choose Dark for a consistently dark Windows interface. Choose Custom when you want to mix light and dark Windows settings. Neither choice can add dark-mode support to an application that lacks it.
Do Windows themes make Hyper-V dialogs dark?
Not necessarily. Themes at Settings > Personalization > Themes change backgrounds, colors, sounds and the cursor, but they are not documented as an override for unsupported application dialogs.
Will Windows Update make every dialog dark?
No. Microsoft updates specific components and dialogs, sometimes through gradual rollouts. File Explorer and selected Task Manager dialogs have documented improvements, but those notes do not promise dark Hyper-V dialogs.

No. The supported procedure uses Windows Settings and, when available, an application’s own appearance option. Hardware, accessories and generic utilities do not directly enable dark dialog support.
What should I do if only one Hyper-V window remains light?
Confirm that Windows is set to Dark, restart Hyper-V Manager, check for an application-level theme option, and install available Windows updates. If the window remains light without its own setting, that is within the documented support boundary.
The Bottom Line
Set Settings > Personalization > Colors > Choose your mode to Dark (or Custom), restart Hyper-V Manager and check its individual windows. A light Hyper-V or legacy dialog does not mean the setting failed: Microsoft supports dark mode per application and component, not as a guarantee for every desktop dialog.
