Cross-play is enabled per game, not by a universal console switch. Confirm that the game supports the exact PS5, Xbox and PC combination and mode you want. Then turn on the game’s Cross-play or Cross-platform play option. Xbox players must also allow cross-network play in the console’s privacy settings; a blocked Xbox permission can override an otherwise valid game setting.
What cross-play does—and what it cannot do
Cross-play puts players on different systems into the same multiplayer session. The game publisher decides which platforms, editions, generations, regions and modes share a matchmaking pool. A PS5, Xbox or PC cannot force cross-play for a title that does not support that combination.
Cross-play and cross-progression are separate. A game may let you play with friends on another platform without carrying your unlocks, ranking or purchases between platforms. Check both features in the game’s official support information.

Check these limits before changing a setting

Enable cross-play on PS5
PlayStation does not provide one universal cross-play switch documented for every game. Most titles put the control in their own menus, and some enable it automatically.

- Start the game and open Settings, Options, Account, Network or Online.
- Find Cross-play, Cross-platform play or a similarly named setting.
- Set it to On or Allow, then apply the change if the game provides an Apply or Save command.
- Return to the game’s Social, Friends or Party screen and use the publisher account search if a platform-only friend list does not show your contact.
For example, EA says cross-play is enabled by default the first time you start Madden NFL 26 on PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. A title that starts with cross-play enabled can still expose a switch later, and a mode can impose additional limits.
Enable cross-play on Xbox
Xbox has a platform-level permission that can block cross-network multiplayer. Use this path on the console:
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Open Online Safety & Family.
- Choose Privacy & Online Safety.
- Select Xbox Privacy.
- Open View Details and Customize.
- Choose Communication and Multiplayer.
- Set You can join cross-network play to Allow.
This is the reverse of Bungie’s documented Destiny 2 disable instruction, which sets the same permission to Block. In Activision’s Black Ops 6 guidance, console privacy settings take priority over the in-game choice, so check the Xbox permission whenever the game toggle appears correct but cross-platform matchmaking still fails.

Child and family accounts can inherit stricter multiplayer permissions. The account organizer may need to change the family safety setting before the Allow option can work.
After changing the permission, fully quit and restart the game. Some titles do not re-check platform privacy until a new session starts.

- Open the title’s Settings, Account, Network or Online menu and enable its cross-play control when one is available.
- For Microsoft Store and Xbox PC versions, check the Xbox PC app if the title offers a global cross-play setting.
- In Black Ops 6, Activision says cross-play cannot be disabled on Steam or Battle.net, while Microsoft Store and Xbox PC users can adjust the global Xbox PC setting.
- Update the game and its launcher before testing; a console and PC on different builds may be placed in separate pools.
There is no PC-wide switch that can create support where the publisher has not implemented it. A Steam player and a Microsoft Store player may therefore see different controls for the same title.
Join a friend on another platform
A PSN or Xbox friend request alone is often insufficient. Many games use a publisher account layer for the actual cross-platform invitation.
- Link the required publisher account on each player’s console or PC account.
- Open the game’s Social, Friends or Party menu.
- Choose the publisher’s player search and enter the exact cross-platform ID.
- Accept the incoming request, then invite or join from the in-game list.
Examples of account searches
- Black Ops 6: use the player’s Activision ID.
- Madden NFL 26: use EA Connect’s Player Search; EA says you can search by EA ID or a platform identifier.
If the name does not appear, verify spelling, the account link and whether the friend is online in the same game version.
How support differs between games

Fix cross-play when it is not working
- Verify the official game support page. Check the exact platforms, edition, generation, mode and region rather than relying on a general statement that the game “supports cross-play.”
- Update everything. Install the latest game, console system software and PC client updates. Restart after changing a privacy or cross-play setting.
- Recheck Xbox permission. Confirm You can join cross-network play is Allow, then review child or family-account restrictions.
- Confirm account links and IDs. Make sure every player is signed into the required publisher account and that the correct Activision ID, EA ID or other player identifier was added.
- Check regions. Riot states that cross-play only works for players within the same region, regardless of device.
- Check the selected mode. Ranked, franchise and other specialized modes may not share the same cross-play pool. In Fortnite, turning cross-play off can leave only limited modes.
- Check generation and edition. A friend on an older console generation or a different edition may be unable to join even with the toggle enabled.
Do you need to buy anything?
No purchase is required to enable cross-play itself. A microphone or gaming headset is optional communication equipment, not a cross-play requirement. PlayStation notes that PC Remote Play voice chat requires a microphone, but that requirement concerns voice chat rather than multiplayer compatibility.
