Enable Unturned server cheats by editing the server’s Commands.dat file, not through an in-game menu. Add the exact line Cheats Enabled, add Owner <your SteamID64> on its own line, save the file, and restart the server. Cheats will then be available to the account identified as owner; spelling, capitalization, file location, and the restart are all required.
How the Unturned cheat setting works
Unturned dedicated servers read administrative settings from text files when the server starts. The cheat switch is one of those settings. It is a line in Commands.dat, so there is no gameplay menu, console button, or client-side option that turns cheats on for everyone.

An Owner entry associates your SteamID64 with the server. The combination is therefore two separate settings in the same file:
Cheats Enabledpermits the server’s cheat commands.Owner <SteamID64>gives the named account owner-level administrative status.
Both lines must be present in the Commands.dat loaded by that server. If either line is missing, in the wrong file, or written with incorrect capitalization, a command can appear to do nothing.

Before you edit the server
Make sure you have file access
You need permission to edit the dedicated server’s files or its configuration editor. On a self-hosted installation, this normally means access to the machine and the Unturned server directory. On a hosted server, the provider may expose a file manager or a configuration-file editor in its control panel. The file contents and command names are the same in both arrangements; only the way you open the file differs.
Have the correct SteamID64 ready
The owner line uses your 64-bit Steam identifier, commonly called SteamID64. It is a numeric identifier, not your display name, custom URL, login name, or the shorter SteamID formats sometimes shown by third-party lookup tools. Copy the complete number exactly as displayed by a reliable Steam-ID lookup service or your own account records.

Changing the text while the server is running does not activate the setting immediately. Plan a restart after saving, and warn players if the server is public. If your host has separate save and restart controls, use both: save the file first, then restart the Unturned service.
Locate the correct Commands.dat file
Self-hosted or locally managed server
The Unturned Bunker Wiki describes the usual location as the Unturned installation directory, then Servers, then the folder named for your server, followed by the Server subfolder. That subfolder contains the server’s .dat configuration files, including Commands.dat, Adminlist.dat, Blacklist.dat, and Whitelist.dat.
- Open the directory where the dedicated Unturned server is installed.
- Open
Servers. - Open the folder whose name matches the server you intend to change.
- Open its
Serversubfolder. - Confirm that the file is named
Commands.dat, with the.datextension visible.
If you operate more than one server, each server name has its own folder and its own Commands.dat. Editing a different server’s file will not change the instance you join.

Provider-hosted server
Open the provider’s control panel and find the file manager, configuration editor, or server-files section. Select the configuration for the specific Unturned instance, then open Commands.dat. Providers may present the same path with a graphical interface, but do not substitute a similarly named startup, command-line, or game-settings file. The cheat setting belongs in Commands.dat.

Before changing anything, download a copy or duplicate the file’s current contents. A backup lets you restore existing command settings if a formatting mistake, panel save error, or later edit removes a line. Use a plain-text editor; rich-text applications can insert formatting characters that the server cannot parse.
Edit Commands.dat exactly
Add the cheat switch
Place this on its own line:
Cheats EnabledThe capitalization is significant: both words begin with capital letters. Do not add quotation marks, a colon, an equals sign, a dash, or explanatory text. Do not combine it with another setting on the same line.
Add your owner entry
On another line, enter the word Owner, one space, and your complete SteamID64:
Owner 7656119XXXXXXXXXXThe number above is only a format illustration; replace it with your actual SteamID64. Keep the entire identifier on one line. Do not put your Steam display name after Owner, and do not include angle brackets in the saved file.

Keep existing settings intact
Commands.dat can contain other command or access settings. Add the two required lines without deleting unrelated entries. Each setting should occupy a separate line. Avoid leading or trailing punctuation and check that your editor has not changed the filename to something such as Commands.dat.txt.
Example of a minimal file
A minimal file containing only the required entries can look like this:

Owner 7656119XXXXXXXXXXReplace the sample number before saving. The order of these two lines is not the important part; their spelling, separate-line format, and presence in the active server’s file are.
Save, restart, and verify
- Save
Commands.datas plain text. - If you used a hosting panel, confirm the panel reports that the file was saved or uploaded. Some panels require a separate “Save” or “Apply” button.
- Restart the dedicated server completely. A player reconnecting to an already-running process is not enough.
- Wait for the server to finish starting and join with the Steam account whose SteamID64 appears on the
Ownerline. - Test a known command from the current Unturned command reference. Run the test as the owner account, not from a second account that is merely connected to the server.
The settings are read at startup, which is why a restart is part of the procedure rather than an optional final step. If you edit the file again later, restart after that change as well.

Hosting changes the access path, not the syntax. If a provider’s panel shows several files with similar names, select the live server’s Commands.dat and verify the panel’s server name before saving.

Why a cheat command does not work
The command has no effect at all
First reopen the file that belongs to the server you actually joined. Confirm that the line is exactly Cheats Enabled, including capitalization and spacing. A typo such as a lowercase word, an added colon, or a line placed in a different configuration file prevents the server from enabling cheats. Then verify that you restarted the server after saving.
The command is accepted but produces no result
Check the owner entry. The account issuing the command must match the SteamID64 written after Owner. A display name, a copied profile URL, or a truncated number does not identify the account correctly. Correct the number, save, and restart before testing again.
You edited the file but nothing changed after a restart
Confirm that the panel actually saved the edit and that the server process restarted rather than merely reloading a web page or disconnecting players. On a machine with multiple installations, check the path again: the active instance has its own server-named folder under Servers. Compare the timestamp or contents of the file you edited with the file exposed by the running instance.
Only one account can use the commands
The owner line identifies the account that receives owner status. Other players do not automatically gain that status merely because cheats are enabled. If another administrator needs access, use the server’s documented administrative access procedure and ensure you understand which account is being granted permission; do not share your Steam credentials or owner number publicly.
The file looks correct, but commands still fail
Use the current Unturned command reference to verify that the command itself exists and that its spelling and arguments are valid. The cheat switch does not correct an invalid command. Community forum discussions contain reports of “commands.dat not working,” but the Unturned Bunker Wiki command table is the more dependable place to check command names and requirements.

Disable cheats safely
- Stop or prepare to restart the server.
- Open the same active
Commands.datused to enable the setting. - Delete the complete
Cheats Enabledline. Do not leave a partial or commented version that could be misread. - Save the plain-text file.
- Restart the server.
Removing the cheat line turns off the server-wide cheat setting after startup. The owner entry is a separate administrative setting; remove or change it only when you also intend to revoke that account’s owner status.
Security and operational precautions
Use cheats only where players expect them
Cheat commands can alter inventory, progression, or the game world. On a cooperative test server, announce the rule and keep a backup of important saves. On a public survival server, enabling them without notice can undermine the server’s rules and player trust.
Protect the owner identifier
A SteamID64 is not a password, but publishing your configuration can reveal which account has owner status. Keep control-panel credentials, server files, and backups private. Never give another person your Steam login details so they can use the owner account.
Keep a change record
Record when you enabled or disabled the line, who made the change, and which server it affected. This is especially useful when a host maintains several instances or when an unexpected command changes the world. Retain the pre-change backup until you have confirmed the server starts normally.
Version and documentation notes
The procedure described by the Unturned Bunker Wiki and hosting guides is based on the current dedicated-server configuration model: the switch is a Commands.dat line and the account is identified with an Owner entry. A search summary has attributed the addition of the Cheats setting to version 3.14.13.0, but that historical detail is not confirmed on the full wiki page. Treat it as a version-history note rather than a requirement for enabling cheats on a current server.
For command names, arguments, and any changes introduced by a future game update, consult the command table for the version your server is running. The file syntax in this guide remains the part that must be exact: Cheats Enabled, an owner SteamID64 on its own line, and a restart.
