Godlike.Host offers hosted Garry's Mod servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To enable Garry’s Mod’s cheat-protected commands, set the server convar sv_cheats to 1. Run sv_cheats 1 in the dedicated-server console or through RCON for an immediate, temporary change. To apply it after every restart, place the same line in garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg or your hosting panel’s server-configuration editor.
sv_cheats is a server-wide switch. With it enabled, commands such as noclip, god, buddha, impulse 101 and give can become available to players, so use it for testing and debugging rather than an unattended public server.
What sv_cheats controls
Garry’s Mod starts with sv_cheats set to 0. That value blocks commands marked as cheat-protected. Changing it to 1 tells the server to allow those commands. The setting is a convar (console variable), not an individual player permission.
sv_cheats 0: Cheat-protected commands are blocked.sv_cheats 1: Cheat-protected commands are unlocked for the server.
When a player tries a blocked command while the value is 0, Garry’s Mod displays a message similar to Can’t use cheat command … in multiplayer
. Once the value is 1, commands that check the cheat flag can run, provided the command itself is valid in the current game mode and the player can access the console.

A live change takes effect immediately but is lost when the server stops or restarts. A line in server.cfg is read during startup, so it is applied again each time the server launches.
Enable cheats immediately from the server console
Using the dedicated-server console
- Open the console window for the running Garry’s Mod server.
- At the prompt, enter
sv_cheats 1and press Enter. - Check the result by entering
sv_cheatswithout a value. The server should report1. - Have a connected player run a harmless test such as
noclipfrom the in-game developer console. Use a private or controlled session when testing.
The convar changes while the map is running; a map change is not required merely to set it. Commands can still fail for reasons unrelated to sv_cheats, including an invalid command, a game mode that does not implement the command, or a player who cannot open or use the console.
Using RCON
- Connect to the server with the RCON tool or control panel you normally use.
- Send
sv_cheats 1as a server command. - Send
sv_cheatsto read the current value and confirm that the server accepted the change. - Test the intended command with a trusted player before allowing others to join.
RCON applies the command to the server, not just to the administrator’s local client. Protect RCON credentials and avoid pasting them into chat, screenshots or public support posts.
Make the setting persistent with server.cfg
Use this method when a private development server should start with cheats enabled every time.

- Stop the server or use its file manager while it is offline, so the configuration is not being rewritten during your edit.
- Open the
garrysmod/cfg/directory in the server installation. - Open
server.cfg. If it does not exist, create a plain-text file with exactly that name. - Add this line on its own:
sv_cheats 1- Save the file as plain text. Ensure the filename is not accidentally saved as
server.cfg.txt. - Start or restart the server.
- Use the server console or RCON to run
sv_cheatsand verify that the value is1.
If another startup configuration or server-management tool changes the convar later, the final value may differ from the line in server.cfg. The console check after startup is therefore more reliable than assuming the file was loaded.
Use a hosting panel’s configuration editor
Providers label this feature differently: it may be called Server.cfg, Configuration files, Startup configuration or a text editor under file management. The underlying requirement is the same: add sv_cheats 1 to the server’s persistent configuration, save it, and restart if the panel requires a restart to reload configuration.

- Locate the configuration editor for
server.cfgor the equivalent server startup file. - Add
sv_cheats 1on a separate line. - Save or apply the change.
- Restart the server if the panel says a restart is required.
- Confirm the result with
sv_cheatsin the panel console or through RCON.
Do not put the command in a client-side autoexec file when your goal is to change a multiplayer server. A client file affects that client; the server convar must be set by the server console, RCON or a server startup configuration.
Understand the server-wide scope
sv_cheats is not a per-player toggle. When it is enabled, the server permits cheat-protected commands for the connected game session. It does not create a separate “cheats on” state for one administrator while keeping the same commands blocked for everyone else.

This matters most on a shared or public server. Depending on the command and game mode, players may be able to use movement, invulnerability, item-spawning or other test functions. Enabling the convar does not by itself make a safe administrator-only permission system.
When you set sv_cheats back to 0, newly issued cheat-protected commands stop working. A player who is currently in noclip is also dropped out of noclip when the cheat setting is disabled. If you are ending a test session, warn players first and then run:

Permissions and why the command may be rejected
Access rules are not consistent across every server setup. Some multiplayer-server guidance states that only a Super Admin can enable sv_cheats 1. Other guidance says an administrator can issue it from the in-game console when they have superadmin or RCON access. Addons, server wrappers and the way the command is being issued can change the result.

For that reason, do not rely on a universal rank name. Test the command on the actual server build and configuration:
- If you operate the dedicated server, use its server console first; it is the clearest way to determine whether the command itself works.
- If you manage the server remotely, use RCON with the account that has command authority.
- If you are an in-game administrator and the command is refused, ask the server owner to grant the required authority or run it from the server console/RCON.
- Record the exact console response. A permission denial, an unknown command error and a cheat-protection message indicate different problems.
Do not treat a chat-admin rank as proof that the player can change server convars. Administrative addons commonly separate moderation permissions from engine-level server commands.
Test common cheat-protected commands safely
After checking that sv_cheats reports 1, test only the functions you need. Typical examples include:

These examples are not a guarantee that every command behaves identically in every map, gamemode or addon. Validate the specific command in the environment you are testing, and avoid using destructive commands on a live player population.

Use admin permissions instead when only staff need special abilities
If your objective is staff-only noclip or moderation powers, leaving sv_cheats at 0 is generally the safer design. Configure your administration addon to grant the required ability to approved staff rather than unlocking engine cheat commands for the whole server.
This approach preserves the server’s normal cheat protection for ordinary players, but the exact permission name and setup depend on the administration system installed. Follow that addon’s documentation and test with a non-owner account. A permission that grants noclip is not necessarily permission to run every command protected by sv_cheats.

Its behavior and interaction with current Sandbox builds or addons should be verified on your server before you use it as an access-control mechanism; it is not a replacement for testing your actual admin permissions.
Recommended workflows
Private map or addon testing
- Keep the server password-protected or otherwise limit access.
- Set
sv_cheats 1from the server console or RCON. - Run only the commands needed to inspect the map or reproduce a bug.
- Capture logs, screenshots or reproduction steps while the test state is active.
- Set
sv_cheats 0before opening the server to normal players, or stop the server if the setting was temporary.
Public server maintenance
- Announce a maintenance window before changing the server-wide convar.
- Remove or disable the normal player connection path if you must briefly enable cheats.
- Make the live change through the server console or RCON.
- Perform the maintenance task with trusted staff only.
- Run
sv_cheats 0, verify the value, and check that noclip and other test functions no longer work for a regular account.
Repeatable development environment
- Keep a separate test server or instance rather than enabling cheats in the production configuration.
- Put
sv_cheats 1in that instance’sgarrysmod/cfg/server.cfg. - Document who can connect and which commands are permitted during testing.
- Recheck the convar after updates, migrations or changes to the hosting panel.
Troubleshooting
The game still says “Can’t use cheat command … in multiplayer”
- Run
sv_cheatson the server, not in a client console, and confirm the reported value is1. - If it reports
0, the live command was not accepted or another startup/configuration command reset it. - If the value is
1but the command is still blocked, confirm that you are connected to the intended server and that the command is actually cheat-protected and supported by the current game mode. - Reconnect after a server restart; a temporary console change does not survive that restart.
The command is unknown or has no useful effect
sv_cheats only unlocks commands that exist in the running game and are marked for cheat use. It cannot add commands supplied by a missing addon, correct a misspelled command or override a gamemode’s implementation. Check the command name, its required arguments and whether the current map or gamemode supports it.
The value returns to 0 after every restart
- Check that the line is in the active instance’s
garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg, not a different server directory. - Confirm the file is named
server.cfgand saved as plain text. - Check the hosting panel’s startup or configuration editor for a second setting that writes
sv_cheats 0. - Restart, then query
sv_cheatsthrough the server console or RCON.
You cannot change the convar from the in-game console
That usually indicates an authority or command-routing issue rather than a syntax problem. Try the dedicated-server console or RCON, and ask the server owner to verify the account’s actual server-command permissions. Because permission behavior varies between installations, the error text and the server’s own role configuration are more useful than assuming a particular rank is universally sufficient.
Return the server to its normal state
When testing is complete, run sv_cheats 0 from the server console or RCON and verify the value. If the persistent configuration contains sv_cheats 1, remove that line or change it to sv_cheats 0 before the next restart. Tell connected players that the test session has ended, since anyone currently using noclip will be forced out when cheats are disabled.
For a live public server, the safer default is to leave sv_cheats at 0 and use narrowly scoped administrator permissions for staff functions. Reserve a persistent sv_cheats 1 configuration for an isolated development or testing instance.
