To enable cheat-flagged practice commands in Counter-Strike 2, first turn on the developer console, open a local server or a server where you are an administrator, and run sv_cheats 1 from the server console. You can then use commands such as noclip, sv_infinite_ammo 1, and sv_rethrow_last_grenade.
This works for local practice sessions and authorized dedicated servers. It does not grant access to cheat commands in official matchmaking or on public servers you do not control.
What sv_cheats 1 actually does
sv_cheats is a server convar, not a universal switch on your individual CS2 client. Setting it to 1 tells that server to allow commands carrying the game’s cheat access flag. The command reference describes the requirement directly: commands with the cheat flag can run only after sv_cheats 1 has been activated on the server.
That distinction explains most failed attempts. Typing the command while connected to a server you do not administer cannot override the server’s policy. Your client can open the console, but the server still decides whether the convar may change and whether a flagged command is accepted.

- Local or practice server: you normally control the server and can enable the convar for the current session.
- Dedicated server: you need server-console access or an authorized remote-console or administrator mechanism.
- Official matchmaking: the workflow is not available; the match server controls its own settings.
- Most public servers: you cannot enable it unless the operator has granted you the required administrative authority.
Cheat mode is intended for controlled practice and administration. It is not a way to bypass server rules, anti-cheat controls, or permissions.
Before you start: choose a server you control
Decide where the command will run before troubleshooting your keyboard or settings. The same console command has different results depending on your authority.

A dedicated server’s Secure/VAC setting is a separate control from the developer console and sv_cheats. Steam’s dedicated-server administration guidance treats server security and console administration independently. Enabling a practice convar does not give you authority over a server that you do not operate.
Step 1: enable the developer console in CS2
- Start Counter-Strike 2 and open Settings.
- Select the Game section.
- Find Enable Developer Console (~).
- Set it to Yes. This is the label documented in Steam Support’s CS2 guidance.
- Close the settings screen and return to the game.
The setting only makes the console available. It does not enable server cheats by itself, and it does not change permissions on a server.
Open the console
Press the key assigned to the tilde (~) console. On some keyboard layouts, the physical key or displayed character differs. If the console does not appear, return to Settings > Game, confirm that the developer-console option is still set to Yes, and check which key your layout uses for ~.
Step 2: start or join an authorized practice server
Enter a local/practice session that you control, or connect to a dedicated server on which you have administrator authority. The command must be processed by that server. Being the person who launched the game is not enough if you are merely a client on someone else’s server.

Local practice
Use a local session for the simplest workflow. It is appropriate when you are alone or when everyone participating understands that the server is running practice commands. Because the session is temporary, you should expect to run sv_cheats 1 again after creating a new server.
Dedicated server
For a dedicated instance, use its server console or the authorized remote-console/admin mechanism supplied by the server setup. Do not paste the command into a normal client console while connected as an ordinary player and expect it to become a server command. If you cannot access the server console or an approved administrative channel, you do not have the permission required for this step.
Step 3: enable cheats on the server
With the authorized server running, open the appropriate console and enter:
sv_cheats 1Press Enter. The value 1 enables the server convar. You can then execute a command carrying the cheat flag.

If the command is accepted, proceed with a practice command. If CS2 reports that the convar cannot be enabled, stop and verify the server and your permissions rather than repeatedly typing the same line. A client cannot force a server-controlled convar.

Command flags and syntax can change with game updates. A current CS2 command documentation build identifies the cheat access flag as requiring sv_cheats 1, but the in-game console remains the final check for whether a command exists and what arguments it accepts in your installed version.
Example practice sequence
A simple grenade or movement session can follow this order:

Keep the sequence inside the private or administrator-controlled server. These commands are practice tools, not match advantages that can be transferred into a server where they are disabled.
Why sv_cheats 1 says it cannot be enabled
The error generally indicates a server-authority problem, not a typo in the command. Work through these checks in order.
You are in matchmaking or on a public server
Official matchmaking and most public servers do not permit players to change server cheat settings. Leave that session and create a local/practice server, or ask the server operator to grant you the appropriate administrative access. There is no client-side switch that overrides the operator.
You entered the command in the wrong console
A dedicated server has its own server console. If you have an authorized remote-console mechanism, use that channel. Typing sv_cheats 1 in your client console while connected as a regular player does not make it a server command.

The developer console is not enabled
If the console never opens, revisit Settings > Game > Enable Developer Console (~) and set it to Yes. This fixes console access, but you still need server authority after the console is available.
The command was run before the practice server loaded
Ensure you are in the intended local map or connected to the intended dedicated instance before sending the command. A command entered in a menu or against a different server cannot configure the session you meant to practice on.
The server’s policy forbids it
Some servers deliberately remain secure or deny cheat-flagged commands. The Secure/VAC setting and administrative permissions are server controls; do not try to defeat them. Use a server configured for private practice instead.
A command changed after an update
Even after sv_cheats 1 succeeds, an individual command may be renamed, removed, or given different arguments by a CS2 update. Check the in-game console’s help and the current command documentation for the installed build. Do not assume that a syntax remembered from an older version still applies.
Turning practice commands off
When you finish, stop the individual practice behavior with its documented off value where one is available. For example, noclip 0 explicitly disables noclip, while a toggle without an argument changes whichever state is currently active. For settings that use a numeric value, use the value documented by the console for your build rather than guessing.
To end the cheat-enabled environment entirely, leave the local session or stop/restart the dedicated server according to its administration procedure. A new server session may start with its normal defaults, but verify the server’s configuration if you are responsible for a persistent instance.

Private practice versus a persistent dedicated server
Both setups can support legitimate training, but they solve different problems.

Choose local practice when
- You need a quick solo session.
- You want to test a lineup, movement setting, impact display, or weapon behavior without maintaining a server.
- You do not need the environment to remain online for other players.
- You want the smallest administrative surface: launch the session, set the convar, practice, and leave.
Choose a dedicated server when
- A group needs a repeatable private training environment.
- You need access between personal play sessions.
- You can protect the server with proper administrator credentials and control who connects.
- You understand that server-console access, remote administration, and security settings must be managed separately.
The trade-off is operational: a local session is temporary and simple, while a dedicated instance requires ongoing administration and a clear policy for who may run cheat-flagged commands.
Safe and fair use
Run these commands only where you have permission. In a private practice server, tell invited players that cheat-enabled mechanics are active so nobody mistakes the session for a normal match. Do not use them to gain an advantage in official matchmaking or to interfere with a community server’s rules.
Keep practice sessions separated from public play. A private, controlled environment lets you explore movement, grenade trajectories, impacts, and ammunition behavior without affecting other players or violating a server operator’s policy. If a server is VAC-secure or otherwise governed by an operator, follow that operator’s rules rather than attempting to change them.

No. The setting only exposes the console. The server still must accept sv_cheats 1, and you must have control of that server or authorized administrator access.
Why do cheat commands work in practice but not matchmaking?
Practice servers are under your control, while matchmaking servers enforce their own settings. A client cannot override the matchmaking server’s permissions.
How do I enable cheats on a dedicated CS2 server?
Use the dedicated server’s console or an authorized remote-console/admin mechanism, run sv_cheats 1, and then issue the practice command there. Ordinary client access is not sufficient.
