There are two practical ways to enable cheats on a 7 Days to Die server: set BuildCreate to true for server-wide Creative Mode, or leave it disabled and grant administrator level 0 to selected players before using the dm and cm console commands. The first method affects everyone; the second limits powerful tools to administrators.
Check the game version before editing anything. Version 3.x moved a number of gameplay settings out of serverconfig.xml, and current documentation does not establish whether every installation still exposes BuildCreate in that file.

Choose the right cheat method
Your choice depends on who should have access and what you need to do.

If you are running a cooperative building server and trust every participant, use BuildCreate. If you want normal players to remain unprivileged while you repair a base, test a mod, or recover from a bug, use administrator commands instead.

Before changing a server
Confirm the game version
Do not copy an old configuration tutorial blindly. Pre-V3 guides commonly show a line like <property name="BuildCreate" value="false" /> with a comment describing cheat mode. A Game Server Kings guide reports that V3.x moved many gameplay settings out of serverconfig.xml, but the exact current property list is not established. Open the configuration supplied by your host and search for BuildCreate rather than assuming the line exists.
Get the correct access
- For the configuration route, you need access to the server’s
serverconfig.xmlthrough your hosting control panel or file transfer method. - For administrator-only cheats, you need access to the server console and the ability to join the server.
- Keep a copy of the original configuration before editing it. If the server refuses to start or a setting behaves unexpectedly, restoring the original file is safer than guessing at syntax.
Decide whether players should be able to use cheats
BuildCreate is not an admin permission. According to host guides, setting it to true enables Creative Mode for everyone. That means any player who can join may gain the same building and item-creation capability. Use administrator commands when access must be selective.
Path A: enable Creative Mode for everyone with BuildCreate
1. Open serverconfig.xml
Stop or take the server offline according to your host’s normal maintenance procedure, then open the server’s serverconfig.xml. The exact folder and panel labels vary by host, so use the configuration editor or file browser provided for your installation.
2. Find the BuildCreate property
Search for BuildCreate. In older configuration examples, the default is false. The relevant setting is represented as:
<property name="BuildCreate" value="true" />Change only the value from false to true. Preserve the quotation marks, property name and XML structure. If the property is absent, do not invent a new location without checking documentation for your exact server version; V3.x configuration changes mean an old insertion point may no longer be valid.
3. Save the file and reload the server
Save the edited file using the host’s editor, then start or restart the server so it reads the configuration again. If your host provides a separate “apply” or “save configuration” action, use it before starting the server.

4. Test with a player account
Join with a normal player account and check whether Creative Mode access is available. Test with an account that does not have administrator level 0; this confirms that the setting is genuinely server-wide rather than a privilege left over from an earlier test.
What BuildCreate does not establish
A host guide claims that enabling this setting flags the server as “Modded” in the server browser. That behavior has not been confirmed by an official source, so treat the browser label as possible rather than guaranteed. The setting’s documented purpose in the available host guidance is enabling Creative Mode for all players.
Path B: give cheats to administrators only
This route leaves BuildCreate set to false and uses the server’s permission system. You promote a player, then that player enables the tools from the in-game console.
1. Join the server and identify the player
Connect to the server with the account that should receive privileges. In the server console, run:

lpThis lists players and their IDs. The permission syntax accepts either a player name or a numeric ID. A community guide also identifies lpi as a way to obtain IDs, and an ID can be used even when the player is offline. A name works only while that player is online.
2. Grant full administrator level
Run:
admin add <name or ID> 0Replace the angle-bracketed text with the actual name or numeric ID; do not type the brackets. Level 0 is full administrator access. The default player level is 1000, so omitting the final 0 will not grant the intended permission.

3. Verify the permission
Use:
admin listConfirm that the player appears in the administrator list. If the player was added by name, make sure the spelling and capitalization match the connected player’s name. If the player is offline, use the numeric ID instead.
4. Revoke access when finished
Remove a privilege with:
admin remove <name>Use the name format accepted by your server console. If your build requires an ID for removal, select the player’s ID from the player list. After removal, have the player reconnect or reload their session if the old permission remains active temporarily.
Use the in-game console: dm and cm
Open the console
While connected to the server, press F1 to open the in-game console. Enter a command and press Enter. These commands are toggles: entering the same command again can turn the corresponding mode off.
Enable the Debug Menu with dm
dmdm toggles the Debug Menu. Once enabled, press Esc to access functions described by the community wiki, including God Mode, Fly Mode and time or speed sliders. The menu also includes utilities such as killing your character, setting a position, adding a light and recalculating light.
God Mode and Fly Mode are debug capabilities, not merely building permissions. Use them carefully on a live world: moving through terrain, changing time or altering lighting can affect the session for everyone connected.
Enable the Creative Menu with cm
cmcm toggles the Creative Menu. With it enabled, press U to open an inventory containing every item. This is the direct route when you need to place a specific block or item without normal crafting and loot progression.

Why dm and cm may appear to overlap
The community wiki notes that entering dm and pressing Enter can also enable the Creative Menu and related functions. Because that behavior is described separately from the explicit cm toggle, use cm when you specifically need the item inventory and use dm when you need debug controls. If one command appears not to work, check the current toggle state rather than repeatedly changing server permissions.
The Advanced-tab Cheat Mode option
The community wiki describes a client-facing Cheat Mode option in the Advanced game-options tab. It controls access to the Creative Menu. The same wiki says the Debug Menu must be enabled with dm before God Mode is available.
This option is not documented as a replacement for server administration. The available guidance does not resolve how the Advanced-tab setting interacts with BuildCreate on a dedicated server. If you manage a dedicated server, use the server configuration or administrator procedure above and treat the client option as an additional, version-dependent control rather than a guaranteed server-wide switch.
Dedicated-server scope versus local play
There are three different scopes that are easy to confuse:

admin addgrants level 0 to a named player or ID. Only promoted players should be able to use the administrative tools. - Client game option: the Advanced-tab Cheat Mode setting controls a player’s Creative Menu access according to the community wiki, but its dedicated-server interaction is not established.
Do not assume that turning on a client option changes the permissions of other players. Conversely, do not assume that making yourself an administrator automatically grants Creative Menu access until you enable cm or the relevant debug option in the F1 console.
Console versions
The community wiki states that console editions do not support cheats beyond access to the Creative Menu. The server-console commands and PC-style debug workflow described above therefore may not be available on a console edition. If you are playing on a console, look for the edition’s Creative Menu or Cheat Mode control instead of trying to edit a PC server configuration or run admin add.

Version and configuration pitfalls
The BuildCreate line is missing
Absence of BuildCreate does not prove that cheats are impossible. It may indicate a newer configuration layout, a host panel that hides the XML property, or a different game version. Check the server version and the host’s current configuration documentation before adding an unverified property by hand.
You changed the file but nothing happened
- Confirm that you edited the active server instance, not a local copy or an archived configuration.
- Check that the value is exactly
trueand that the XML remains well formed. - Ensure the server was fully reloaded after saving.
- Test with an account that is not already an administrator, so an existing permission does not mask the result.
The command says the player is unknown
A name-based command requires the player to be online. Use lp to copy the displayed name exactly, or use the numeric ID. The available guidance says IDs can be used for offline players.

Creative Menu access and debug access are separate functions. Enter dm in the F1 console, then open the Debug Menu with Esc. The Advanced-tab Cheat Mode setting alone is not described as enabling God Mode.
A server appears as Modded
One host guide associates BuildCreate with a “Modded” browser flag, but that association is unverified. Do not treat the label as proof that the setting is active or inactive; test the actual Creative Menu behavior and inspect the loaded configuration.
A remote web panel or telnet console is advertised
Search summaries claim that some hosts expose commands through a web panel or telnet using a password in serverconfig.xml. Those details were not confirmed by a cited source. Use a remote console only when your host documents the connection method, authentication and command support for your exact server version. Never expose an unauthenticated console to the public internet.
Safe operating procedure for a shared world
- Tell players when cheats will be enabled and whether the change applies to everyone.
- Back up the world and the original configuration before changing settings or using debug movement.
- Prefer administrator-only access for repairs, testing and moderation.
- Use
cmfor a specific item anddmonly for debug tasks that require God Mode, Fly Mode or time controls. - Remove temporary administrators with
admin removewhen the task is complete. - Return
BuildCreatetofalsewhen you no longer want server-wide Creative Mode, then reload the server.
Keeping the normal player level at 1000 and granting level 0 only to named accounts gives you a clear permission boundary. It also makes it easier to audit who can use debug tools.

What to remember
BuildCreate is the broad switch described by hosting guides, while admin add <name or ID> 0 is the selective permission route. After promotion, dm exposes debug controls and cm exposes the Creative Menu. Because V3.x changed server configuration and the current presence of BuildCreate is not confirmed, always verify the version and active configuration before editing a live server.
