Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To enable cheats in Minecraft, turn on the commands setting for the edition and environment you are using. In Java Edition, enable Allow Commands when creating a world or from Esc > World Options in an existing world. In Bedrock Edition, use Game Settings > Cheats > Activate Cheats for a new world or Settings > Game > Cheats for an existing one. A Bedrock dedicated server requires allow-cheats=true in server.properties, followed by a restart.
Cheats and operator (OP) status are separate. Enabling cheats permits command use in the world, but multiplayer players still need operator permissions for commands such as /give and /tp. Turning cheats on also disables achievements; on Bedrock, that change is permanent for the world.

Before enabling cheats
First identify your edition and where the world is running. Java Edition is the PC version distributed through the Minecraft Launcher. Bedrock Edition includes Windows, consoles, mobile devices and Bedrock dedicated servers. The menu names differ, and a server has an additional permissions step.
- Back up the world. Cheats can alter inventories, locations, game rules and difficulty. A copy lets you recover if a command has an unintended effect.
- Expect achievements to be disabled. Enabling cheats disables achievements in both editions. Bedrock treats this as permanent for that world.
- Check your role. In single-player you control the world settings. On a multiplayer server, only the server owner or an existing operator can change server files or grant OP status.
- Allow for label changes. Current Java menus commonly say Allow Commands; older guides and some versions say Allow Cheats. Bedrock uses Cheats or Activate Cheats.
Enable cheats in Java Edition
Turn them on while creating a new world
- Open Minecraft Java Edition and select Singleplayer.
- Select Create New World.
- Open the world-options or game-rules section and find Allow Commands. In older releases this may be labelled Allow Cheats.
- Switch the setting to ON.
- Choose Create New World.
Commands are available as soon as the world loads. Press T to open chat, type a command beginning with /, and press Enter. If the setting is missing, check whether the world is Hardcore; Hardcore worlds do not offer the Allow Commands option.

Turn them on in an existing Java world
- Load the world.
- Press
Escto open the pause menu. - Select World Options.
- Set Allow Commands (or the version’s equivalent Allow Cheats) to ON.
- Close the menu and return to the world.
You do not need to delete the world or open it to LAN in current versions covered by the available guides. Older instructions often use Open to LAN and then enable Allow Cheats; that is a different, temporary workaround and should not be confused with the current world-options setting.
Java Hardcore worlds
Hardcore worlds do not present the Allow Commands option. Because Hardcore is designed around a locked survival rule set and one-life failure condition, the normal Java menu path cannot be used to enable cheats in an existing Hardcore world.

Turn them on while creating a new world
- Open Bedrock Edition and select Play.
- Select Create New, then choose Create New World.
- Open Game Settings.
- Find Cheats and switch on Activate Cheats.
- Accept the warning about achievements if it appears, then create the world.
The exact wording can vary by platform and release, but the setting is in the new-world Game Settings screen. Once the world loads, commands can be entered through chat.

Turn them on in an existing Bedrock world
- Load the world.
- Open the pause menu and choose Settings.
- Select Game.
- Find the Cheats section and flip the cheats switch on.
- Confirm the warning if prompted, then return to the game.
This changes that world rather than globally changing every Bedrock save. If the switch is unavailable, you may not have permission to edit the world, or you may be playing on a server whose owner controls the setting.
Enable cheats on a Bedrock dedicated server
For a Bedrock dedicated server, the server setting is stored in server.properties. A hosting control panel normally exposes the same value as a toggle labelled Allow Cheats or Enable Cheats.
- Stop the server before editing its configuration.
- Open the server’s
server.propertiesfile, or open the equivalent settings page in the hosting panel. - Change
allow-cheats=falsetoallow-cheats=true. Keep the spelling, hyphen and lowercase values exactly as shown. - Save the file or panel setting.
- Restart the server. The new value is not reliable until the server has restarted.
- Join the server and test a command only after you have been granted operator status.
A panel may overwrite manual edits when it starts the server. If the value keeps reverting, stop the server, change the panel’s own cheats control, save it, and restart from the panel.

Java servers: enabling commands is not the same as granting OP
On a Java server, turning on a command-related setting does not automatically make every player an administrator. The player must be added as an operator through the server console or another existing administrative route.
The guides reviewed for this topic disagree about whether an allow-cheats property applies to Java dedicated servers. The consistently documented Bedrock procedure is the allow-cheats entry described above; do not copy that key into a Java server and assume it works. Check the documentation for the exact Java server version or host panel you are running. Regardless of that setting, OP assignment remains a separate step.
Grant operator status
Java server console
- Open the server console, not the in-game chat window.
- Enter
op PlayerName, replacingPlayerNamewith the player’s exact in-game name. - Press Enter and wait for the confirmation message.
- Have the player reconnect if commands still appear unavailable.
Do not type a leading slash in the server console. In in-game chat, the equivalent command is /op PlayerName, but it can be run only by someone who already has sufficient permission.

Bedrock server console
Bedrock servers can require the player’s Xbox user identifier (XUID) for reliable permission assignment. If a console op command does not work:

- Open the server’s
latest.logand find the connection entry containing that player’s XUID. - Add the player with operator permission in
permissions.json, using the XUID and the permission level required by your server. - Save the file and restart the server, or use the server’s documented permission reload process if it provides one.
Use the JSON structure already present in the file and make a backup before editing. A missing comma, quote or bracket can prevent the server from reading the file.
Operator permission levels
Permission levels are version-specific. The following values are reported by the guides available for this topic, but their command coverage should be verified against the server version rather than assumed:

Descriptions of Java levels conflict between guides—for example, they disagree about whether level 2 is the level that covers commands such as /gamemode, /give and /tp, or whether those descriptions belong to a different named tier. Treat the numeric level as a configuration value and verify the command’s requirement for your release.
Useful commands after cheats are enabled
Commands are entered in chat with a leading slash. The examples below are common tests because each produces an obvious, reversible result:
/gamemode creativeswitches the executing player to Creative mode./gamemode survivalreturns the executing player to Survival mode./give PlayerName minecraft:diamond 1gives one diamond to the named player. Replace the name and item identifier as needed./tp PlayerName 0 80 0teleports the named player to the specified coordinates. Verify the coordinates before running it in a valuable world./time set daychanges the world’s time to day.
Autocomplete in the chat window can show valid command names, arguments and player names. If a command is underlined in red or returns a permission error, the problem is usually operator status, permission level or syntax—not the cheats toggle itself.
Troubleshooting
The cheats option is missing
- Confirm the edition. Java uses World Options; Bedrock uses Game Settings or Settings > Game.
- Check whether the Java world is Hardcore. Hardcore worlds do not offer Allow Commands.
- On a server, the owner must change the server configuration; an ordinary player cannot expose the setting from the pause menu.
- Look for alternate wording such as Allow Cheats, Cheats or Activate Cheats because labels vary by version.
The setting is on, but commands fail
- In multiplayer, ask the owner to grant OP. Cheats do not automatically promote every player.
- On Bedrock, check the player’s permission entry and OP level. A default level can block administrative commands even after OP is granted.
- On Java, make sure
op PlayerNamewas entered in the server console without a slash and with the exact player name. - Check command syntax, target names and coordinates. Use chat autocomplete where available.
The Bedrock server change did not take effect
- Stop the server completely.
- Confirm the active server’s
server.propertiescontainsallow-cheats=true, rather than a similarly named backup or template file. - Save the file, then restart the server.
- If a host panel controls the file, enable its Allow Cheats or Enable Cheats toggle instead of editing a generated file.
Achievements disappeared
This is expected behavior after cheats are enabled. Cheats disable achievements in both editions, and Bedrock treats the change as permanent for that world. Restore a pre-cheats backup if you need an achievement-eligible copy.
Changes seem to reset
World settings are stored per world, while server settings are stored in the server configuration. Make sure you edited the world you actually opened or the server instance that your players joined. On hosted servers, panel settings can overwrite manual file edits during startup.

Safe operating practices
- Use a backup before commands that change large areas, inventories or player positions.
- Grant OP only to trusted players. Cheats enabled for a world do not require that every participant receive administrative rights.
- Use the lowest permission level that provides the command a player needs, then test it with a noncritical action.
- Keep server configuration backups when changing
server.propertiesorpermissions.json. - Record the original setting if you are testing commands temporarily, but remember that re-enabling achievements is not available for a Bedrock world once cheats have been activated.
