Apex is a paid Arma 3 DLC, not a Steam Workshop mod. You do not enable it by subscribing to a Workshop item. The server owner must run a valid Arma 3 installation, the mission must use content the connected players own, and every player needs Apex to use Apex content. Because the exact current dedicated-server parameter or SteamCMD branch for Apex is not established in the available documentation, verify Bohemia Interactive’s current Arma 3: Dedicated Server wiki instructions before changing a live server.
What “enable Apex” actually means
In Arma 3 server discussions, “enable Apex” can refer to three different tasks:
Recommended Free Tools
- Owning the expansion: Apex is a paid expansion sold for Arma 3 through Steam.
- Making Apex files available to the server installation: this is a server-administration and installation question, not a Workshop subscription.
- Running a mission that uses Apex assets: map, vehicles, weapons, objects or other content can impose DLC requirements on clients.
Those are separate from loading ordinary Workshop mods. A Workshop subscription can provide a community mod or mission, but it does not grant Apex ownership and does not replace the official dedicated-server setup.
Check the requirements before changing the server
The host account needs Arma 3
A community dedicated-server guide states that the Steam account used to set up the server must own a valid copy of Arma 3. Treat that as a prerequisite for the account that installs or updates the server, not as a guarantee that every mission is available to every client.

Confirm Apex ownership for anyone who will use its content
Players need Apex to use Apex content. The most frequently reported hard requirement is the Tanoa terrain: community reports say Tanoa missions require Apex, while players without Apex can generally join servers that do not use Tanoa content. These are player reports rather than an official compatibility rule, so test the exact mission and build you intend to run.
Identify the mission’s actual dependencies
Read the mission description and inspect its required addons before scheduling an event. A mission can depend on Apex because of its terrain, a vehicle, an object, or another asset even when the title does not contain the word “Apex.” Conversely, a server that uses only base-game content should not be described as an Apex server merely because the host owns the DLC.

Use the official dedicated-server instructions for the server-side step
The precise mechanism for exposing Apex content to a dedicated server is version- and distribution-dependent. The available material does not establish a verified launcher parameter, SteamCMD application ID, or SteamCMD branch that can safely be copied into a production command. Do not add an unverified -mod value, invent an Apex branch name, or paste a command from an unrelated Workshop guide.
- Open Bohemia Interactive’s official Arma 3: Dedicated Server wiki page.
- Match the instructions to your installation method: Steam client, SteamCMD, or a managed hosting control panel.
- Check the current sections covering downloadable content, server startup parameters, and updating the server files.
- Apply the documented method to a test instance first, using the same Arma 3 branch and server build as production.
- Start the test server and review its startup log for missing files, unknown parameters, or failed content initialization.
- Join with one account that owns Apex and, if possible, another account that does not. Use a non-public test password while checking the mission.
If the wiki changes its parameter names or distribution instructions, follow the current page rather than an older forum post. A server can appear to start normally while still failing when a client loads a DLC-dependent mission, so a successful process launch is not proof that Apex content is available.

Install and update the server consistently
Keep the host’s game and server builds aligned
Update the dedicated server and the game clients before testing. Record the Arma 3 build shown by the server and by a connecting client. A version mismatch can look like a DLC problem, especially when the first failure occurs during mission selection or loading.
Do not treat Apex as a Workshop collection
Apex is part of the official Arma 3 DLC catalogue. Workshop subscriptions are appropriate for community scenarios and mods, but they are not the installation or licensing mechanism for Apex. If a hosting panel has separate fields for official DLC, mods, and mission files, use the panel’s documented DLC field or startup workflow for the official content and keep Workshop items in their own mod list.
Preserve a rollback path
Before editing a startup profile or host-panel configuration, copy the working configuration and note the previous launch settings. If the server stops booting, restore the last known-good profile, then test one change at a time. This avoids confusing an Apex configuration change with a simultaneous mod, mission, or update change.
Choose a mission and terrain that your players can access
| Server content | What the available reports indicate | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Tanoa terrain or a mission built for Tanoa | Players report that Apex is required. | Require Apex for the event and test a complete join-and-load cycle. |
| Other terrain with no Apex assets | Players without Apex can generally join, according to community reports. | Test with a non-Apex account; do not assume every custom mission is compatible. |
| Apex vehicles, weapons or objects on another terrain | The client requirement depends on the content used; reports are not an official compatibility matrix. | Check the mission’s declared dependencies and test with both ownership states. |
| Workshop mission or mod named “Apex Framework” | It is a separate community mission-framework project, not the official DLC. | Evaluate it as a normal third-party project; it does not enable Apex ownership. |
Publish the terrain and required DLC in your server’s description. For a public server, put the requirement in the name or welcome message as well as the mission briefing so players do not discover it only after a failed load.

Understand what players without Apex can and cannot do
Ownership affects the client, not just the server process. A server operator cannot grant the DLC to a player by adding a launch parameter. Community reports commonly describe the following behavior:
- A player without Apex is generally blocked from Tanoa missions.
- On missions that do not use Tanoa, a player without Apex can often connect.
- Players without the DLC may be able to ride in Apex vehicles but not operate them.
- Marksman weapons are reported by players as an exception to the vehicle-style restriction.
These behaviors are reports from players, not a guarantee for every Arma 3 build or mission. Treat them as test cases rather than promises. If your scenario depends on a client driving, piloting, commanding, or firing a DLC asset, require Apex explicitly and verify that role in a private session.
A repeatable test procedure
- Prepare the test mission. Use the exact mission file, terrain, mods and server profile planned for production. Do not substitute a different scenario and assume the result transfers.
- Test with an Apex owner. Confirm that the server appears in the browser, the mission loads, and the player can enter the roles that use Apex assets.
- Test with a non-owner where appropriate. On a non-Tanoa mission, check whether the player can connect and reach the briefing. On a Tanoa mission, record the precise error rather than repeatedly changing settings.
- Exercise the content. Spawn or select each Apex vehicle, weapon, object or terrain area that the mission requires. A lobby connection alone does not prove that all required assets work.
- Read both logs. Save the server log and the client’s error text, including missing-addon names and version information.
- Change one variable. If the test fails, first remove optional Workshop mods, then compare the mission’s declared dependencies, then verify the server build. Avoid changing DLC settings, mission files and mod versions simultaneously.
- Repeat after updates. Re-test after an Arma 3 update, mission revision, or hosting-panel image change. DLC-related behavior can be exposed only when a mission is loaded.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server starts but Tanoa will not load
First confirm that the mission is actually Tanoa-based and that the connecting account owns Apex. If ownership is correct, compare the server and client builds, then follow the current dedicated-server wiki procedure for official content. Do not “fix” the error by subscribing to an unrelated Workshop item.
Players can join the lobby but are removed at mission start
This usually indicates a dependency or ownership check that occurs during mission loading rather than browser discovery. Verify the mission’s required addons, test with an Apex owner, and inspect the server and client logs for the named missing content.

A vehicle is visible but a player cannot operate it
Community reports describe this as a possible result for players without Apex: they may ride in some DLC vehicles but cannot operate them. Require the DLC for roles that drive, fly or command those assets, and confirm the behavior in the exact mission instead of relying on a generic rule.
A startup command copied from a forum does nothing
Remove the unverified option and return to the official dedicated-server documentation. Arma 3 server launch syntax differs between distributions and hosting panels; an option accepted by one wrapper may be ignored by another. Check the startup log for unknown or unused parameters.

Use an unambiguous notice such as: “This event uses Tanoa and requires the Arma 3 Apex DLC.” If the mission does not use Apex content, say that Apex is not required, but qualify the statement with the mission name and version. Avoid saying “Apex mod,” because that sends players to the wrong installation path.

Hosting-panel and rented-server considerations
A rented host may expose DLC selection through a control panel rather than a raw startup command. The provider’s interface can also lag behind changes to the official server distribution. Ask the host which Arma 3 build it runs, how official DLC content is enabled, and where the resulting startup log is available. Do not assume that a panel checkbox labelled “Apex” is equivalent to a Workshop mod, and do not provide players with a shared Steam account to work around ownership.
If the panel does not document Apex support, create a disposable test server and validate a Tanoa mission before paying for a longer event slot. Keep the mission, mod list, server profile and build number recorded so the configuration can be reproduced on another host.

Workshop mods
Workshop content is distributed separately from the official Apex expansion. A mod can add a map or framework with “Apex” in its name without containing any official Apex files or granting the DLC.
The community “Apex Framework” project
“Apex Framework” is identified as a separate community mission-framework project on GitHub. Its name does not mean that it enables the official DLC. Treat it as an optional third-party dependency and consult its own documentation only if the mission requires it.
Server ownership versus player ownership
The host account’s valid Arma 3 licence allows the server to be set up; it does not transfer Apex rights to connected players. Each player’s ability to use DLC content remains an account-level question.
Safe decision checklist
- Is the account installing the server a valid Arma 3 Steam owner?
- Is Apex owned by every player who must use its content?
- Does the mission use Tanoa or another Apex asset?
- Have you followed the current Bohemia Interactive dedicated-server wiki procedure for your installation method?
- Did you test the exact mission with an Apex owner and, when relevant, a non-owner?
- Are official DLC requirements separated from Workshop mod requirements in your instructions?
- Can you restore the previous server configuration if the new setting fails?
The reliable outcome is not a particular copied command; it is a verified server build, a mission whose DLC dependencies are known, and clients whose Steam accounts own the content they must use.
