To unlock Android Auto’s developer settings, open Android Auto on your phone, tap Version and permission info 10 times, approve Allow development settings?, then open the three-dot menu and select Developer settings. On Android 10 and newer, reach that screen through Settings > Apps (or Apps & notifications) > Android Auto > Advanced > Additional settings in the app. On Android 9 and older, open the Android Auto app and its menu directly.

These controls are intended for compatibility testing and diagnostics. They can force a wired connection, change video negotiation, record audio or video streams, increase logging, and permit certain eligible sideloaded apps. They cannot add wireless hardware support, increase a car display’s physical resolution, or make an incompatible app safe to use while driving.

What Android Auto developer settings are

Android Auto has its own developer menu, separate from Android’s system-wide Developer options. The Android Auto menu changes how the projection service negotiates video and audio with a vehicle head unit and provides tools for collecting diagnostic data. Most drivers never need it; the controls are useful when a connection, rendering, audio, GPS, voice, or app-compatibility problem must be reproduced and documented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The menu is version-sensitive. The phone’s Android version, Android Auto release, vehicle head unit, and wired or wireless transport determine which labels appear. A control described below may be renamed, moved, or absent in a particular build. Google’s published instructions establish the activation sequence and the behavior of Unknown sources; technical references document several of the diagnostic controls.

Before you enable the menu

  • Make sure Android Auto is installed and that you can open its settings on the phone.
  • Have the vehicle available if you are testing projection, because some choices are negotiated only when a head unit is connected.
  • Decide whether the test will use USB or wireless projection and record that transport before changing settings.
  • Do not begin a diagnostic recording while driving. Pull over, or have a passenger operate the phone.
  • Expect recordings and logs to contain destinations, contacts, notifications, voice, music, or other trip information.

How to unlock Android Auto developer settings

Android 10 and newer

  1. Open the phone’s Settings.
  2. Tap Apps. Some Android releases call this Apps & notifications.
  3. Select Android Auto.
  4. Open Advanced, then tap Additional settings in the app.
  5. Scroll to the About section and tap Version so the full Version and permission info row is visible.
  6. Tap Version and permission info 10 times in succession.
  7. When Android Auto asks Allow development settings?, tap OK or the confirmation control shown on your phone.
  8. Open the three-dot overflow menu in the upper-right corner and choose Developer settings.

Android 9 and older

  1. Open the Android Auto app on the phone.
  2. Open its main menu.
  3. Scroll to About and tap Version to expose Version and permission info.
  4. Tap that row 10 times, accept Allow development settings?, and open the three-dot menu.
  5. Tap Developer settings.

Developer mode is a one-time unlock: once enabled, the menu remains available until you explicitly leave it. Google provides Quit developer mode in the same overflow menu. Quitting hides the Android Auto developer controls; it does not require tapping the version row again unless you later re-enable them.

Android phone Developer options are a different menu

Android’s system Developer options are enabled by tapping the phone’s Build number seven times. They contain controls such as USB debugging, bug-report shortcuts, and logger-buffer settings. Those controls are not the Android Auto developer settings described here.

Android Auto’s menu is unlocked by tapping Version and permission info 10 times inside Android Auto settings. Enabling one menu does not automatically enable the other, and changing USB debugging or other system options is not required for the Android Auto activation sequence.

Android Auto developer options explained

Option What it changes Best use and important limit
Wireless Android Auto Enables or disables attempts to project Android Auto wirelessly. Turn it off to force a wired-only test when wireless pairing is unreliable. Turn it on only when both phone and car support wireless projection; the switch cannot add missing wireless hardware.
Application Mode Selects a release, developer, or retail-style behavior in builds that expose the selector. Keep the default for ordinary driving. Developer or X-Ray-style modes are intended for development and protocol diagnostics, and labels vary by release.
Share screenshot now Captures the Android Auto screen currently projected to the vehicle. Useful for a layout or rendering report. Review the image before sharing because it can show destinations, contacts, notifications, or other private data.
Save Video Saves the projected H.264 video stream while enabled. Use only while reproducing a display defect. Video consumes storage and may reveal the route or information shown on the head unit.
Dump screenshot Captures screenshots on a diagnostic schedule or trigger. Helpful for repeatable rendering tests. Disable it as soon as the test ends.
Save Audio Saves Android Auto audio streams for analysis. Diagnostic only. Recordings may contain calls, navigation instructions, messages, or entertainment audio.
Save Microphone Input Saves microphone input captured for Android Auto. Use for voice-command or call troubleshooting. Get consent from anyone whose speech could be recorded.
Audio Codec Chooses the preferred audio transport. Exposed choices can include standard negotiation, PCM, AAC-LC, and AAC-LC with ADTS headers. Leave negotiation at its default unless a specific compatibility fault justifies testing another codec. The head unit must support the selected format.
Force debug logging Forces verbose Android Auto diagnostic and protocol logging. Enable immediately before reproducing a fault and collecting a bug report, then disable it. Google includes this control in its bug-report workflow.
Collect GPS Data Adds GPS-related information to diagnostic output. Enable only for a location, routing, or sensor problem. Location traces are sensitive data and should be handled accordingly.
Video Resolution Sets the maximum video size Android Auto negotiates with the head unit. Common choices are negotiated, up to 800×480, up to 1280×720, and up to 1920×1080. A forced value cannot exceed the phone encoder, connection, head unit, or display capability.
Disable ANR Monitoring Turns off application-not-responding monitoring in diagnostic builds or tests. Leave monitoring enabled for normal use. Disable it only when a developer needs to isolate ANR behavior.
Enable audio latency dump Records timing data used to investigate delay in the audio path. Diagnostic only and potentially storage-intensive.
Unknown sources Allows eligible apps not installed from a trusted source to run in Android Auto. Google limits this to media apps, messaging notifications, and parked apps. It does not apply to Android for Cars App Library apps and does not make arbitrary software safe or compatible.
Enable debug overlay / X-Ray Displays diagnostic information over the projection or changes the app to a diagnostic view. Use for development and bug capture, not everyday driving.
Clear all data Resets Android Auto’s stored app data in builds that expose the command. Use as a last resort. It can remove pairings, preferences, and cached state, so record anything you need before running it.

Connection and application-mode controls

Wireless Android Auto

Disabling Wireless Android Auto is a controlled way to determine whether a failure belongs to wireless transport or to Android Auto itself. With it off, Android Auto attempts a wired projection path only. This is useful when wireless pairing repeatedly drops, takes too long to start, or works in one location but not another. Re-enabling the option restores wireless attempts, but only a compatible phone, head unit, and wireless implementation can complete the connection.

Application Mode

Most users should leave Application Mode at its default retail behavior. Builds that expose release, developer, or X-Ray-style choices may use different names, and the exact selector is not present on every release. A non-retail mode is appropriate when a developer asks for a protocol trace or diagnostic overlay; it is not a performance setting or a way to unlock additional consumer features.

Screen and stream capture

Share screenshot now takes a single image of the projected interface. Use it to show a clipped button, wrong layout, missing icon, or rendering artifact. Dump screenshot is intended for repeated or scheduled captures rather than a single report.

Save Video records the H.264 projection stream while active. Because it can create large files, start it immediately before reproducing the visual issue and stop it afterward. Check the destination and notification areas in every frame before sending a file to a support team. A screenshot or video can disclose a route, a saved place, a contact name, or an incoming notification even when the original defect is visual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audio, microphone, and codec diagnostics

Save Audio and Save Microphone Input separate two sides of an audio investigation. The first captures Android Auto audio streams delivered toward the vehicle; the second captures microphone input used for voice or call functions. Select only the stream related to the symptom so the resulting files contain less unrelated material.

The Audio Codec selector can expose standard negotiation, PCM, AAC-LC, and AAC-LC with ADTS headers. Start with negotiation, because it lets the phone and head unit select a mutually supported format. Test a fixed codec only when a reproducible compatibility issue points to negotiation or decoding. A codec choice that the head unit does not implement can produce silence, failure to connect, or a result that is worse than the default.

Enable audio latency dump records timing information rather than improving latency by itself. Turn it on for a defined test, reproduce the delay, save the diagnostic output, and turn it off to avoid unnecessary storage use.

Logging, GPS, and overlays

Force debug logging increases the detail written by Android Auto. More detail can make a connection or protocol failure identifiable, but it also increases the sensitivity and volume of the resulting report. Enable it directly before the reproduction window instead of leaving it on indefinitely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Collect GPS Data adds location-related information to diagnostics. It belongs in a routing, position, or sensor investigation, not in a generic report about a frozen music screen. Treat the output as a location history and share it only with people who need it.

Enable debug overlay and X-Ray-style views place diagnostic information over the projected interface or alter the view for development. The overlay can obscure controls and is unsuitable for normal driving. Capture the evidence, then return to the default mode.

Choosing a video resolution

Video Resolution controls the maximum size proposed during negotiation with the head unit. Typical entries are Negotiated, up to 800×480, up to 1280×720, and up to 1920×1080. “Up to” is important: the setting is a ceiling, not a promise that Android Auto will transmit or display that size.

  • Start with Negotiated. This lets the phone and car select a mutually supported mode.
  • Try 1280×720 for a bandwidth or stability test. A lower ceiling can reduce transport and encoding pressure when a high-resolution stream is unreliable.
  • Use 1920×1080 only when the complete path supports it. The phone encoder, USB or wireless link, head unit, and vehicle display all impose limits.
  • Use 800×480 when diagnosing a very constrained or older path. It can help determine whether the problem is related to stream size, but it cannot repair a failing cable, radio link, or head unit.

The car’s physical panel remains the final limit. Forcing 1080p on a display designed for a lower resolution does not add pixels, and forcing a mode beyond the phone encoder or connection capability cannot create that capability.

Unknown sources and app testing

Unknown sources allows eligible applications that were not installed from a trusted source to run in Android Auto. Google limits the behavior to media apps, messaging notifications, and parked apps. It does not extend to Android for Cars App Library applications, and it does not certify an arbitrary sideloaded app for safe use.

Use this switch only for a specific compatibility test. Verify what the app can display or announce before connecting it to a vehicle, and remember that a parked-app allowance is not permission to interact with the app while moving. Turn the switch off after the test if you do not need it.

What the diagnostic reset does

Clear all data appears only in implementations that expose the command. It resets Android Auto’s locally stored application state, which can include vehicle pairings, preferences, and cached information. Because the command is destructive to that state, use it after less disruptive tests have failed. Note the vehicles and settings you will need to recreate first; after the reset, pair the phone again and repeat the original symptom with default settings before changing developer controls.

A safe troubleshooting sequence

  1. Reproduce the symptom normally. Note whether projection was wired or wireless, which vehicle was used, what the screen or audio did, and whether the issue is repeatable.
  2. Enable only the logging needed. Turn on Force debug logging immediately before the next reproduction. Add Collect GPS Data only for a location or routing issue. Add screenshot, video, audio, or microphone capture only for the affected stream.
  3. Test transport separately. If wireless is unstable, disable Wireless Android Auto and repeat with a known data-capable USB connection. If the wired path works, the evidence points toward wireless pairing or transport rather than the projected app itself.
  4. Test video negotiation conservatively. Leave resolution at Negotiated first. For a visual failure, try a lower ceiling such as 1280×720 before testing a higher mode. Keep the car display’s native limit in mind.
  5. Capture the report while connected. Start the phone’s bug-report process while the Android Auto session remains active. Google warns not to unplug the USB cable or disconnect the wireless link before capture completes, because information can be lost.
  6. Stop capture and logging. Disable every recording, overlay, GPS collection, latency dump, and forced codec that you enabled for the test.
  7. Return to ordinary operation. Restore negotiated video and default application behavior. Use Quit developer mode from the overflow menu if you no longer need the menu.

Common problems when the menu is missing

The version row does not expand

Use the Android Auto settings path that matches the phone’s Android version. On Android 10 or newer, the entry is nested under the Android Auto app’s Advanced settings; on Android 9 and older, open the Android Auto app and its menu. Scroll within About until Version and Version and permission info are visible, then tap the row itself 10 times.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The prompt never appears

Count deliberate taps on Version and permission info, not taps on an unrelated Android system version field. The Android Auto activation requires 10 taps and the confirmation prompt. The phone’s seven-tap Build number procedure belongs to the separate system Developer options menu.

Developer settings disappeared

The available labels and menu placement can change after an Android Auto update or between phone builds. Reopen the Android Auto in-app settings and check the overflow menu. If Quit developer mode was used, repeat the 10-tap activation sequence.

A forced setting makes projection worse

Return to negotiated video, the default application mode, and default audio codec negotiation. Disable overlays and all capture switches, then reproduce the fault with a clean configuration. A forced value is a diagnostic variable, not a permanent quality upgrade.

Privacy and storage checklist

  • Review screenshots and video for addresses, routes, contacts, notifications, and account information.
  • Treat microphone and audio files as recordings of real people and conversations; obtain consent where required.
  • Handle GPS-enabled reports as sensitive location data.
  • Delete large capture files after the support case or test is complete.
  • Turn off verbose logging and every capture control after the reproduction.
  • Do not operate these controls while the vehicle is moving.

Practical defaults

Goal Recommended starting state Change only if
Normal daily driving Developer mode available but default application behavior, negotiated video, codec negotiation, wireless enabled only when supported, and all capture controls off. A repeatable fault requires a controlled test.
Wireless connection failure Disable Wireless Android Auto and test a wired session. You need to isolate pairing or wireless transport after confirming the wired path.
Blurry, blank, or unstable projection Use negotiated resolution, then test up to 1280×720. A developer requests a higher or lower ceiling for a specific head-unit test.
Audio delay or silence Keep codec negotiation and normal audio settings. Capture the audio stream or latency dump, or test a codec supported by the head unit.
Location or routing error Leave GPS collection off until the test begins. Enable Collect GPS Data immediately before reproducing the location symptom.
App compatibility experiment Keep Unknown sources off. Test an eligible media, messaging-notification, or parked app from a non-trusted source, then disable the switch.

Android Auto developer settings are most useful as temporary diagnostic controls. Enable the menu with the 10-tap sequence, change one variable at a time, capture evidence while the phone remains connected, and restore defaults when the test is finished.
