Swipe typing lets you enter a word by sliding your finger from letter to letter without lifting it. On an iPhone, the built-in keyboard calls this gesture QuickPath. On Android, the steps in this guide use Google’s Gboard keyboard, where the feature is called Glide typing. An iPhone can also use Gboard, but that requires installing and configuring the separate keyboard.

The feature does not work for every keyboard language. Android menu names can also differ between manufacturers and Android versions, so use the closest equivalent settings path on your phone.

Quick comparison: QuickPath and Glide typing

Phone and keyboard Feature name How to turn it on Important limitation
iPhone built-in keyboard QuickPath There is no separate QuickPath switch in Apple’s standard instructions. Open a text field and slide across the letters. Apple says QuickPath is not available for every language.
Android with Gboard Glide typing Open Gboard settings, choose Glide typing, and enable it if it is off. Not every language supports Glide typing; settings labels vary by device.
iPhone or iPad with Gboard Glide typing Install Gboard, enable Glide typing in the Gboard app, then add and select Gboard in iOS keyboard settings. Google lists iOS 9 and later as supported, and language support is not universal.

Apple’s description of QuickPath is available in its iPhone User Guide. Google’s Android and iOS setup instructions are in its Gboard Help and Gboard setup guide for iPhone and iPad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The names describe the same basic gesture: touch the first character, trace the rest of the word in order, and lift at the end. The practical difference is where the control lives. QuickPath is part of Apple’s existing keyboard, while Glide typing is a Gboard setting. Installing Gboard does not change which keyboard is displayed until you select it.

Before you start: identify the keyboard and language

Swipe typing is controlled by the keyboard currently on screen, not simply by the phone model. An iPhone may have both Apple’s keyboard and Gboard installed. An Android phone may have Gboard, a manufacturer keyboard, or another third-party keyboard. The instructions below apply only when the named keyboard is active.

Also check the language shown on the keyboard. Apple and Google both state that their gesture features are unavailable for some languages. A language can be installed for ordinary tapping without supporting QuickPath or Glide typing. If the gesture works in one language but not another, that limitation is a more likely explanation than a damaged screen.

You do not need a special case, stylus, screen protector, repair kit, or paid typing program. The documented methods use the standard onscreen keyboard or free keyboard software. Open an app with a normal text field, such as Messages, Mail, Notes, a browser form, or a search box, so you can test the gesture.

How to use swipe typing on an iPhone with QuickPath

QuickPath is part of the standard iPhone onscreen keyboard. You do not need to install an app or turn on a dedicated QuickPath setting when using a supported keyboard language.

  1. Open an app with a text field, such as Messages, Mail, Notes, or a web form.
  2. Tap the text field so the onscreen keyboard appears.
  3. Touch the first letter of the word you want to enter.
  4. Keep your finger on the screen and slide across the remaining letters in order. For example, to enter “hello,” move across h, e, l, l, and o without lifting your finger.
  5. Lift your finger when you reach the final letter. The iPhone inserts the word and normally adds a space so you can continue.
  6. Start the next word with another slide, or tap individual letters whenever that is easier. You can switch between tapping and sliding in the same sentence.

The gesture is intended for any app that provides a normal text field. You do not have to swipe every word, and punctuation, numbers, and unusual names can still be entered by tapping the relevant keys.

How to trace a word accurately

Begin directly on the first letter rather than approaching it from the side. Keep contact with the glass while you move through each letter, even when the path doubles back or crosses another key. The keyboard interprets the overall path, so you do not need to stop on each key. Lift only after the final character; lifting midway ends the current word and can leave separate letters.

QuickPath and ordinary tapping can be mixed freely. A short, familiar word may be quicker to trace, while a person’s name, abbreviation, web address, number, or symbol is often clearer when entered one key at a time. Switching methods does not require opening a menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when QuickPath does not work

If sliding produces separate letters rather than a completed word, first check the selected keyboard language. Apple says QuickPath is unavailable for some languages, so the gesture may be missing even though the iPhone keyboard is working normally.

For general keyboard controls, open Settings > General > Keyboard. That area contains the iPhone’s ordinary keyboard options and installed keyboards; it is not a separate QuickPath activation screen. If the keyboard language does not support the feature, changing to a supported language is the relevant solution, provided you are comfortable typing in that language.

If you have installed several keyboards, look at the keyboard currently visible before testing again. Use the keyboard-switcher key to move between Apple’s keyboard and Gboard. A setting changed inside Gboard cannot enable QuickPath on Apple’s keyboard, and a QuickPath-capable language selected in Apple’s keyboard does not configure Gboard.

How to enable and use Glide typing on Android with Gboard

These instructions apply to Gboard. Gboard is already the default keyboard on some Android phones. On other phones, you may need to install it and select it as the active virtual keyboard before the Glide typing setting appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Gboard’s settings

  1. Tap a text field in any app to display the keyboard.
  2. Open Gboard settings from the keyboard’s settings entry point, if one is visible. Depending on the Gboard layout, this may be available from the toolbar or a settings icon.
  3. If you cannot reach the setting from the keyboard, open the Android Settings app and follow Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard.

Manufacturers can rename or reorganize these menus. Google’s Android setup documentation notes that menu routes differ on custom Android versions. If you do not see the same labels, search your phone’s Settings app for keyboard, virtual keyboard, or Gboard, then open the corresponding keyboard settings.

Some phones place language and input controls under a heading such as General management, Additional settings, or System management instead of directly under System. The wording is different, but you are looking for the list of virtual or onscreen keyboards and then the Gboard entry.

Turn on Glide typing

  1. In Gboard settings, select Glide typing.
  2. Turn on the Glide typing option if it is disabled.
  3. Return to the app where you want to type.
  4. Touch the first letter of a word and slide through each following letter without lifting your finger.
  5. Lift your finger at the end of the word. Gboard will enter its best match and normally leave the keyboard ready for the next word.

Google documents Glide typing as a language-dependent feature, so enabling the switch does not guarantee that it will work with every language installed on your phone. Select the language you intend to use in Gboard, then test a few ordinary words in a text field.

Correct or remove a word

When Gboard chooses the wrong word, tap the intended word in the suggestion strip if it is offered. This lets you keep the rest of the sentence and replaces the misread result with the displayed suggestion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the incorrect word is already in the text, Google instructs users to double-tap that word and then tap Delete to remove it. You can then type the replacement by tapping or gliding. For a difficult name, technical term, abbreviation, or mixed letters and numbers, ordinary taps are usually the more dependable choice.

Glide typing is not a separate input mode that must be used continuously. Enter one word with a glide, tap the next word, insert punctuation, and resume sliding whenever it suits the text. The keyboard remains ready for either method.

If Gboard is missing or is not the active keyboard

  1. Check whether Gboard is installed on the phone.
  2. Open the device’s keyboard or virtual-keyboard settings and select Gboard as an available or active keyboard.
  3. Open a text field and use the keyboard switcher if the phone is displaying a different installed keyboard.
  4. Once Gboard is visible, open its settings and check Glide typing again.

Google’s Android Gboard setup guidance covers installing or selecting the keyboard. Google notes that some of its Android steps apply only to Android 8.0 and later; on a customized or older build, the manufacturer’s instructions may be necessary.

Do not assume that seeing a Gboard icon in an app means Gboard is active everywhere. Keyboard selection is controlled by the phone, and an app can open with whichever keyboard was last selected. Confirm the name or layout on screen before changing settings.

How to swipe type on an iPhone with Gboard

The iPhone’s built-in keyboard and Gboard are separate keyboards. If you prefer Google’s Glide typing controls, install and configure Gboard rather than looking for a hidden QuickPath switch.

Install and configure Gboard

  1. Install the Gboard app on the iPhone or iPad.
  2. Open the Gboard app.
  3. Choose Keyboard settings > Glide typing and enable the feature.
  4. Open iPhone Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
  5. Add Gboard to the list of keyboards. If you want it to appear first, use the keyboard list controls to prioritize it.
  6. Open a text field, press the keyboard-switcher key, and select Gboard.
  7. Touch the first letter, slide through the remaining letters, and lift your finger at the end of each word.

Google lists Gboard for iPhone and iPad on iOS 9 and later in its official setup instructions. The exact keyboard-switcher icon can vary with the iOS keyboard layout, but it is normally the key used to move between installed keyboards.

Adding Gboard to the iOS list makes it available; it does not force every text field to use it. If Apple’s keyboard appears, press the switcher again and select Gboard. If you later want QuickPath, switch back to Apple’s keyboard and use the language that supports it.

Gboard on iPhone versus QuickPath

Both approaches use the same touch gesture, but their setup is different. QuickPath is ready from the built-in keyboard when the language supports it. Gboard requires the app, its in-app Glide typing setting, and the iOS keyboard-list entry. Choose QuickPath when minimizing setup matters, or Gboard when you specifically want Google’s keyboard on iPhone and iPad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting swipe typing

The keyboard enters individual letters instead of a word

  • Confirm that you are keeping your finger down for the entire path and lifting only after the final letter.
  • On iPhone, verify that the selected keyboard language supports QuickPath.
  • In Gboard, open Glide typing and confirm the setting is enabled.
  • Make sure the keyboard currently on screen is the one whose feature you configured. An iPhone may be showing Apple’s keyboard while Gboard is installed, or an Android phone may be displaying another keyboard.
  • Test in a simple text field such as Notes or a message composer to rule out an unusual app-specific input field.

The setting or menu is not where the instructions say

Android manufacturers customize Settings. Try searching Settings for “Gboard,” “virtual keyboard,” or “languages & input.” The documented route is Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard, but the phone may place those controls under a differently named system or keyboard section. Google advises checking the device manufacturer’s help when the menus differ.

On an iPhone, do not search for a QuickPath switch that Apple does not list. Use Settings > General > Keyboard for ordinary keyboard and language controls, then test QuickPath from a text field.

Glide typing works in one language but not another

Both Apple and Google limit swipe typing by language. Select the keyboard language you actually intend to use, then verify that language’s support. A language appearing in the keyboard list does not by itself establish that QuickPath or Glide typing is available for it.

Words are frequently misread

  • Use the suggestion strip to select the intended correction immediately after the swipe.
  • For names, technical terms, abbreviations, and mixed letters and numbers, tap the keys instead of forcing a glide path.
  • Make the path follow the letters in order and lift at the end of the word; an accidental early lift can split one word into several inputs.
  • On Gboard, double-tap an incorrect word and tap Delete, then re-enter it.
  • Check that the active language matches the language of the word. A path interpreted under another language can produce a different suggestion.

Nothing happens after installing Gboard on an iPhone

  1. Open the Gboard app and confirm that Glide typing is enabled.
  2. In iOS, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and add Gboard.
  3. Return to the text field and select Gboard with the keyboard switcher.
  4. If the keyboard still does not appear, check that the app installation completed and that the iPhone is running a supported iOS version. Google’s listed baseline is iOS 9 or later.

Swipe typing stops at punctuation or numbers

Glide and QuickPath are intended for words made from the letter keys. Enter punctuation, symbols, and numbers by tapping their keys, then begin a new glide for the next word. This is normal mixed input, not a sign that the feature has been disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The keyboard changes after switching apps

Some apps remember the last keyboard used, while others open with the phone’s current default. When the layout looks unfamiliar, use the keyboard switcher and confirm whether you are on Apple’s keyboard, Gboard, or another installed option before troubleshooting the gesture.

Choosing the right method

Your situation Use this method Why
You have an iPhone and want the fewest setup steps Apple’s built-in QuickPath Open a text field and slide on the existing iPhone keyboard; no separate keyboard installation is required.
You have Android and Gboard is already active Gboard Glide typing Check the Glide typing setting, then start sliding immediately.
You have Android but a different keyboard is active Install or select Gboard, then enable Glide typing The Glide typing instructions apply to Gboard, not automatically to every Android keyboard.
You have an iPhone but prefer Google’s keyboard Gboard for iPhone Install Gboard, enable Glide typing in its app, and add it under iOS keyboard settings.
Your primary language is unsupported Tap letters normally or use a keyboard that supports that language’s gesture input Neither Apple nor Google promises swipe typing for every language.

The choice is therefore less about iPhone versus Android hardware and more about the keyboard and language you use. On iPhone, QuickPath avoids an extra installation. On Android, Gboard provides the documented Glide typing controls, but the route to those controls depends on the phone’s software. On either platform, tapping remains available whenever a word or language is not handled well by a gesture.

Practical habits for faster, cleaner swipe entry

  • Lift only at word boundaries: The lift tells the keyboard that the current word is complete.
  • Use suggestions as part of the workflow: A suggestion is the quickest correction when the intended word appears in the strip.
  • Mix input methods: Swipe common words and tap uncommon words, punctuation, symbols, and numbers.
  • Keep the active language in mind: A change in keyboard language can change whether the gesture is available and how a path is interpreted.
  • Check which keyboard is visible: Installing a second keyboard does not automatically make it the keyboard currently receiving your input.
  • Trace in letter order: You do not need a perfect geometric line, but the path should pass over the intended letters in sequence.
  • Correct immediately: Choosing a visible suggestion right after a glide is simpler than waiting until several words later.
  • Use a test sentence: Try a few common words in Notes, then a name or number, so you know when tapping is the better choice.

Requirements and availability

  • iPhone QuickPath: An iPhone with the standard onscreen keyboard and a language supported by QuickPath. Apple documents the feature as unavailable for some languages.
  • Android Glide typing: Gboard installed and selected, with Glide typing enabled. Google notes that some setup instructions apply to Android 8.0 and later, while custom Android builds may use different menu names.
  • Gboard on iPhone or iPad: The Gboard app, iOS 9 or later according to Google’s setup page, Gboard added under iOS keyboard settings, and a supported keyboard language.

These methods use built-in keyboard functions or free keyboard software and do not require a special case, stylus, screen accessory, or repair kit. Because device menus and language support can change, consult the current Apple, Google, or phone-manufacturer help when your labels do not match.
