Enable the developer console from CS2’s in-game settings, set the option to Yes, then press the console shortcut while you are in the game. On an English/US keyboard, the default shortcut is the tilde (~) key.
What the CS2 developer console does
Valve defines the developer console as “a text-based input/output interface to execute commands or change global settings in a game.” In practical terms, it is a text window that accepts supported Counter-Strike 2 commands and displays responses or other game information.

Enabling the feature and opening the window are separate actions. The setting allows the console to be used; pressing the assigned key displays it during gameplay.
Enable the console through CS2’s settings
The in-game toggle is Valve’s official procedure and is the first method to use.
#1 Best Overall
- Single-elimination, team-based online shooter
- Completely overhauled with better graphics, new characters, items, and environments
- Package includes Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and Day of Defeat: Source
- Real-world physics adds depth the gameplay
- Internet connection required for online play
- Launch Counter-Strike 2.
- Click the gear icon to open Settings.
- Open the Game tab.
- In the Game section, locate Enable Developer Console (~).
- Change the setting to Yes.
The option must show Yes; leaving it disabled does not assign a working console shortcut.
Open the console after enabling it
- Remain in CS2 after changing the setting. You can be at a menu or in a game.
- Press the key assigned to the developer console.
For the English/US keyboard configuration, Valve identifies the default key as the tilde (~). On a standard US layout, this is the key above Tab, usually shared with the backtick (`) character.

Which key opens the console?
English/US keyboards
Use the tilde (~) key. Because the key is shared with the backtick character, use the physical key above Tab rather than looking only for a key that visibly prints a tilde.
Other keyboard layouts
The shortcut is layout-dependent. A non-English keyboard can place the equivalent key in another physical position or produce a different symbol when pressed. The label Enable Developer Console (~) refers to the default shortcut, not a guarantee that every regional layout uses the same key.
If the expected key does not work, open CS2’s keyboard controls and use the game’s guidance for changing or identifying the console key. Check the active operating-system keyboard layout as well: switching layouts can change which physical key produces the expected input.

Official toggle versus Steam launch options
There are two commonly discussed ways to make the console available. They are not equally authoritative.
| Method | What it does | Status | Best use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-game setting | Turns on Enable Developer Console (~) and lets the assigned key open the console. | Official Valve path | Normal setup and troubleshooting | Set the value to Yes, then press the correct key for your layout. |
| Steam launch options | A community guide reports that adding -dev and -console to CS2’s launch options can enable the console. |
Secondary community guidance | Fallback testing when the in-game toggle does not behave as expected | It is not the official procedure, and launch-option behavior can change with game updates. |
Trying the community launch-option fallback
If you choose to test the secondary method, open CS2’s Steam properties, find the launch-options field, and enter:
-dev -console
Save the option and start CS2 again. Because this approach comes from community guidance rather than Valve’s documented in-game path, remove it and return to the settings toggle if it causes unexpected startup behavior or has no effect.

Troubleshooting when the console will not open
The setting is still disabled
Return to Settings > Game and verify that Enable Developer Console (~) is set to Yes. A key press cannot open the console while the feature is set to No.
The tilde key produces nothing
First confirm that you are using the physical key above Tab on an English/US layout. If you use another layout, the equivalent key may be elsewhere. Use CS2’s keyboard controls to identify or change the binding instead of repeatedly pressing the US-layout key.
The wrong keyboard layout is active
Operating systems can switch layouts without changing the printed labels on the keyboard. Check the active layout before testing the shortcut again. If necessary, temporarily select the English/US layout and test the default key; then configure a key that is convenient for your normal layout.

You enabled the option but are testing a different key
Enabling the console does not mean every key opens it. The feature and the shortcut are separate: the toggle permits console use, while the assigned key displays the window. Verify the key shown by the game’s keyboard controls.
A launch option was added but nothing changed
The -dev -console suggestion is community-reported and may not behave consistently after a CS2 update. Confirm the official in-game toggle first. If the launch option creates a startup problem, remove it from Steam’s launch-options field and restart the game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe menu wording looks different after an update
Settings labels and launch-option behavior are update-sensitive. After a major CS2 patch, look under the Game tab for the developer-console control and verify the current keyboard binding before relying on older instructions.

- CS2 is running, not merely installed.
- You opened the gear icon and selected the Game tab.
- Enable Developer Console (~) is set to Yes.
- You pressed the assigned console key after enabling the setting.
- For an English/US layout, you tested the tilde/backtick key above Tab.
- For another layout, you checked CS2’s keyboard controls and the active operating-system layout.
- You treat
-dev -consoleas a fallback reported by the community, not as a replacement for the official toggle.
What to remember
The reliable setup is simple: enable the developer console in CS2’s Settings, under Game, set it to Yes, and press the shortcut appropriate to your keyboard. The default tilde key is specific to English/US-style layouts, so a different regional keyboard may require another physical key or a changed binding.
