Enable a Hytale whitelist with whitelist enable, then authorize players with whitelist add <username> or an offline UUID. Use whitelist status and whitelist list to verify access, and disable it with whitelist disable when the server should be public again. Hosting panels may expose the same setting as a toggle; direct JSON editing is intended for controlled bulk changes, not routine one-player updates.
What a Hytale whitelist does
A whitelist changes a server from open access to allow-list access. When it is enabled, only identities registered in the server’s whitelist should be allowed to join. This is useful for private testing, family or community servers, staged releases, and maintenance windows when you do not want an unknown player connecting.

There are three practical ways to manage it:
- Console or in-game operator commands: the quickest and lowest-risk method for enabling the feature and changing one or two players.
- Hosting-panel controls: some providers expose a Whitelist switch in the server options page, so you do not have to enter commands.
- Manual
whitelist.jsonediting: useful for a carefully prepared bulk list or an external provisioning process, but it requires a backup and a stopped server.
Command syntax documented by community and hosting guides should be treated as version-sensitive. No official Hypixel Studios command reference was identified in the available material; the complete command list at hytale.game and the HytaleCommands whitelist reference are third-party references. Check your server build and host documentation if a command is rejected.
Before you enable the whitelist
Get the required access
- Use the dedicated server console, or connect in game with operator permission sufficient to run whitelist commands.
- If you rent a server, have access to its control panel and file manager or SFTP account before attempting a file edit.
- Keep an administrator connection available while testing. Enabling an empty list can lock out every ordinary player.
Choose the identity you will register
For a player who can connect normally, use the account’s online username. For a player who is offline, for bulk provisioning, or when usernames may change, use that account’s UUID. The command references describe both online usernames and offline UUIDs as accepted values. A username is easier for a one-off change; a UUID is the more stable identifier for automation.

Record a recovery path
Write down the console or panel route you will use to disable the feature. If a name is mistyped or the list is empty, whitelist disable restores public access without deleting the registered entries.

The subcommands above are reported by the command references, but exact permission handling and output wording can vary by build or host.
Enable the whitelist from the server console
Recommended command-line sequence
- Open the live server console in your host panel, terminal session, or local server window.
- Add the administrators and test players first. For each account, run
whitelist add <username>. If you have an offline UUID, substitute it directly:whitelist add <offline-uuid>. - Run
whitelist listand check that every intended identity appears. - Run
whitelist enable. - Run
whitelist status. The result should indicate that enforcement is enabled. - Test a permitted account and, if practical, an unlisted account. Do this from a second session so you do not lose your administrative connection.
The order matters operationally: populating and checking the list before enabling avoids turning on an empty list by accident. If you must enable first, keep the console open so you can immediately add the first account or issue whitelist disable.
Enable it while already in game
If your account has the required operator permission, enter the same commands through the in-game command interface. The command names and arguments are unchanged. A host’s console remains preferable for recovery because it is available even when no authorized player can join.

Enable the whitelist in a hosting panel
Aternos and exaroton both document a panel-based whitelist control. The exact navigation can change, but the workflow is the same:
- Stop or pause the server only if your provider requires that before changing options; otherwise open the running server’s configuration page.
- Open the server’s Options or equivalent settings page.
- Find the Whitelist setting and switch it on.
- Save or apply the configuration, then open the panel console or player-management view.
- Add each allowed player, and verify the resulting state with the panel’s player list or the console commands.
Use the provider’s instructions for the labels and save behavior. Aternos’ procedure is described at its Hytale whitelist guide, and exaroton documents the equivalent process at its Hytale support page. A panel toggle changes the same server setting as whitelist enable; it does not replace the need to register players.
Add, remove, and verify players
Add an online username
Run:
whitelist add PlayerNameUse the player’s exact account name as recognized by the server. Then run whitelist list and look for the entry. If the command reports an unknown player, confirm spelling, capitalization rules for your build, and that the account has connected or can be resolved by the server.
Add an offline UUID
For an account that is not online or for an automated list, run:

whitelist add 550e8400-e29b-41d4-a716-446655440000The UUID above is an example format. Replace it with the actual account UUID; do not use a display name as a substitute when your provisioning process is UUID-based. UUID entries are also the form represented in the JSON file described below.
Remove one player
Use the same identity form that was registered:
whitelist remove PlayerNameor:
whitelist remove 550e8400-e29b-41d4-a716-446655440000If a username removal does not find an entry, copy the corresponding UUID from your account records and remove that UUID instead. Verify with whitelist list.

Inspect state and entries
Use the two read-only checks together:
whitelist status
whitelist liststatus answers whether enforcement is active; list answers who is registered. Checking only one can be misleading—for example, a complete list has no effect while the feature is disabled, and an enabled feature with an empty list may block ordinary players.
Clear the list deliberately
Where your build supports it, whitelist clear removes all registered entries. Treat it as destructive: capture the output of whitelist list first, or make a file backup, and keep the console available to add replacement accounts immediately.

Manage a whitelist in whitelist.json
When file editing makes sense
Manual editing is appropriate when you have many UUIDs, need to import an externally maintained access list, or must repair a list that cannot be managed conveniently through commands. It is not the safest choice for adding one player; a command gives you validation and avoids JSON syntax errors.
Locate and back up the file
- Stop the Hytale server cleanly.
- Open the host’s file manager or the server directory over SFTP.
- Use the directory listing or the provider’s file browser to locate
whitelist.json. A universally confirmed path is not available, so do not assume that every host stores it in the same folder. - Download or copy the file to a dated backup before changing it.
The file-and-folder overview at hytale.game can help you understand a server layout, but your host’s directory listing is authoritative for the actual location.

The documented format is a plain JSON array of authorized player UUIDs. A minimal one-entry example is:

- Keep every UUID inside double quotes.
- Separate entries with commas, but do not add a trailing comma after the final entry.
- Do not insert usernames unless your server version explicitly documents a different schema.
Save and restart safely
- Validate that the file is syntactically valid JSON with your editor’s validator or a local JSON checker.
- Upload or save the edited file while the server is still stopped.
- Start the server.
- Run
whitelist listandwhitelist statusto confirm that the entries loaded and enforcement has the intended state.
Manual changes made while the server is running may be overwritten when it saves its own state. Restart after file edits. The available guides do not establish a single universal restart requirement for command-issued changes, so verify command results with list and status rather than assuming a restart is needed; the stop-edit-start cycle above remains the safe procedure for direct file changes.
Troubleshoot a Hytale whitelist that is not working
“Unknown command” or rejected syntax
- Confirm that you are entering the command in the Hytale server console or an authorized in-game command interface, not a host shell that expects a different prefix.
- Use the exact subcommand and argument form:
whitelist enable,whitelist add <username>, and so on. - Check your server build and host documentation. Community references are not an official Hypixel Studios specification, and command names can change during development.
- Try
whitelist statusor the server’s built-in help command to see what that build exposes.
The server is still public
Run whitelist status. If it reports disabled, issue whitelist enable or turn on the panel’s Whitelist option and save it. If status says enabled but an unlisted account can still join, inspect the host panel for a second server instance, a proxy, or a configuration that was not applied, then restart the instance and test again.

- Run
whitelist listand confirm the exact username or UUID is present. - If the player was added by name, try registering the account’s UUID, especially when the player is offline or recently changed names.
- Remove and re-add the entry without extra spaces or punctuation.
- Check that the player is connecting to the same server instance whose console you edited.
- Review the server log and host panel for a separate authentication, version, or connection error; a whitelist rejection is only one possible cause.
Everyone is locked out
Use the server console, not an in-game session, to run whitelist disable. Once access is restored, add the intended identities, verify them with whitelist list, and enable the feature again. If the console is unavailable, restore the last known-good whitelist.json backup while the server is stopped, then restart.
The JSON edit disappears or fails to load
- Make sure the server was stopped before editing and restarted afterward.
- Restore the backup if the file was overwritten or reset.
- Check commas, quotation marks, brackets, and UUID spelling with a JSON validator.
- Confirm that you edited the active instance’s file, not a similarly named world or backup directory.
Should operators bypass the whitelist?
One third-party summary claims operators may join regardless of the list, but that behavior was not tied to a verifiable source. Do not rely on an operator bypass. Register every administrator explicitly and retain console access for recovery.
Operational practices for a private server
- Keep a documented owner account: maintain at least one known-good administrator entry and a separate console recovery method.
- Use UUIDs for automation: usernames are convenient interactively, while UUIDs avoid ambiguity in bulk files and external sync jobs.
- Change one thing at a time: add or remove a player, verify with
list, then change the enabled state. This makes an accidental lockout easier to diagnose. - Back up before destructive actions: save the current list before
whitelist clearor any manual file replacement. - Test from two accounts: one authorized and one unlisted account gives you a direct check of both sides of the access rule.
- Record which instance you changed: multi-server hosts can expose several consoles and file trees with similar names.
For additional host-specific procedures, compare the command and panel explanations from GGServers, ZAP-Hosting, Nodecraft, xGamingServer, and holy.gg. Their interfaces and file-access instructions may differ even when the core commands are the same.
Quick recovery and maintenance checklist
- Open the correct server console.
- Run
whitelist status. - Run
whitelist list. - Add missing accounts with a username or UUID.
- Remove stale accounts individually, or back up before using
whitelist clear. - Enable or disable enforcement with the matching command.
- After any JSON edit, stop the server, back up the file, validate the array, save it, and restart.
- Test one authorized and one unlisted account.
This procedure keeps routine changes reversible, separates identity problems from server-state problems, and avoids relying on undocumented operator behavior.
