On a Google Pixel, start downloading the app in the source app that will install it. When Android prompts you, tap Settings, then enable Allow from this source. To revoke access later, go to Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps, choose that source app, and switch off Allow from this source. Other Android versions may use different menus.
What “Install unknown apps” controls
Android calls installing an app from outside the Google Play Store “sideloading.” The Install unknown apps permission lets a particular app—such as the app handling a download—request installation of apps from outside Play. The setting is granted to the source app, not to the downloaded app itself. On the documented Pixel path, you select the source app when granting or revoking access.
In practical terms, this is a permission for the app that initiates the install flow. If you download a file in one app and that app asks Android to install it, the permission applies to that source app. It is not a general approval of every app on the phone, and it is not a verdict about the file being installed. You still need to assess the app and decide whether to continue when Android presents the installation prompt.

The Pixel menu instructions below are documented by Google Pixel Phone Help. Android menus can differ on devices with manufacturer-customized software, so do not assume this exact path or wording appears on every phone.
How to enable installation from a source on Pixel
Enable access from the app that is trying to install the download. You do not need to turn on a universal “unknown apps” switch in advance. On Pixel, the permission prompt is part of the install flow, and the prompt lets you open the relevant setting for the source app.
- In the app that will handle the installation, begin downloading or opening the app you want to install.
- When Android displays the permission prompt, tap Settings.
- Turn on Allow from this source for the app shown in Settings.
- Return to the installation flow and review Android’s install prompt before deciding whether to proceed.
Grant access only to the source you intend to use. The permission allows that source app to request app installations; it does not establish that a particular download is legitimate or safe. If you have not independently confirmed the developer or source, do not treat the permission prompt as a reason to continue.

If the app or developer is unfamiliar, pause and verify its origin rather than granting permission simply to get past a warning.
How to disable the permission afterward
To revoke a source app’s access on Pixel, use the app-specific list in Settings:
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps.
- Select the source app whose access you want to revoke.
- Turn off Allow from this source.
This is a per-app control, not necessarily one global switch. If you allowed more than one source app, check each relevant entry and revoke access from the ones you no longer use. Revoking the permission stops that source from requesting future installs through this setting; it does not by itself remove apps already installed.

Be careful to select the source app whose permission you mean to change. The list is organized by app, so changing one entry does not revoke access for a different source. If you no longer need a source to initiate installs, switch off its own Allow from this source control. You can leave any other source’s setting unchanged or review it separately.
Google’s documented route is for Pixel. If you do not see the same menu, do not assume your phone is missing the capability or search for a single universal switch based on Pixel instructions. Manufacturers can customize Android settings; consult the instructions for your specific device and software version.
If you cannot find the setting
The menu route above is Pixel guidance. Custom Android versions may rearrange Settings or use different labels, and Google notes that steps can vary. If Install unknown apps or the named source app is not where expected, consult the device maker’s instructions for your phone and Android version rather than relying on an assumed universal path.
- The prompt has not appeared: Start the app download or installation from the source app that needs access. The documented Pixel flow begins there and presents a Settings prompt.
- You are trying to revoke access: Open the list under Special app access, select the source app, and check its own Allow from this source control. Choosing a different app will not change the selected source’s permission.
- An install is blocked for a different reason: The permission discussed here is distinct from Android’s newer developer-verification controls. If the warning specifically says the developer is unverified, follow the separate process below; changing this per-source switch alone may not resolve that block.
Also check what the on-screen message is actually asking you to do. An ordinary request to allow installs from a source and a notice that a developer is unverified are not interchangeable warnings. The former is about whether a source app can request installations; the latter can trigger a separate Android control. Follow device-maker or Google instructions that match the specific warning rather than toggling unrelated settings.
How to assess an app before installing it
Prefer Google Play or a developer’s verified channel. Before granting a source permission or continuing with an install, consider whether the source is an official store or the developer’s verified distribution channel, and whether you can independently confirm the publisher. A familiar-looking download page or an enabled permission is not proof that an app comes from the publisher it claims.
These are useful questions when comparing sources:
- Is it an official store? Google recommends Google Play. If using another channel, determine whether it is an official store or the developer’s verified distribution route.
- Can you confirm the publisher? Check whether you can independently establish that the app is from the developer it claims to represent. Do not rely on the install permission as proof of identity.
- Can you limit access afterward? On Pixel, the source-specific permission can be revoked later by selecting that source in the Install unknown apps list and turning off its switch.
No permission setting can tell you, by itself, whether a particular app is trustworthy. If you cannot verify the source or publisher, the safer choice is not to install. Google warns that apps from unknown sources can put both the device and personal information at risk, including risk of harm, loss, or compromise. That is why Google recommends Play rather than treating sideloading as an equally preferred route.

Google Play Protect is another layer of protection, not a guarantee. Google says Play Protect checks apps in Play before download, checks apps from other sources, can warn about detected potentially harmful apps, and can remove known harmful apps. It performs a lightweight automatic daily scan, and users can also start a full scan. These checks do not make every app harmless or replace assessing its origin. Play Protect’s role is to check apps and respond to detections; it does not turn an unverified download into a verified one, nor does it make the source permission unnecessary. A warning from Android or Play Protect should be taken seriously. Do not assume that the absence of a warning guarantees an app is safe, because Google describes checks and responses—not a promise that all harmful apps will be identified.
Unverified-developer blocks are a separate Android control
As of October 2026, Google documents a developer-verification system for certified Android devices running Android 8 and later. Its rollout is separate from the Allow from this source permission. The timeline and availability may change; consult Google’s current Android developer verification information if you encounter this specific block.
Google’s help page says the rollout starts in September 2026 for participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, with global expansion planned for 2027. The initial participating-store list is Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Palm Store, Samsung Galaxy Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps. Google says Android Open Source Project devices and non-certified devices are exempt, as are certain regions where Google Mobile Services are unsupported.
This system matters only if the phone presents a developer-verification block; it is not another name for the per-source install permission. The dates and availability are rollout details, not a guarantee that every device or store will show the same behavior at the same time. If you see an ordinary Allow from this source prompt, use the source-permission steps above. If the message specifically identifies an unverified developer, consult Google’s separate instructions and consider whether you can verify the developer before attempting to override the block.
If Android blocks an app because its developer is unverified, Google documents a separate advanced flow. It requires enabling developer settings, opening Settings > System > Developer options, enabling Allow apps from unverified developers, and completing a 24-hour security delay. After the delay, choose whether to leave the advanced flow enabled for seven days or indefinitely. An install warning still appears; Google’s instructions say to tap Install anyway to proceed. The advanced flow includes both a waiting period and a choice about how long to keep that control enabled. Those steps are distinct from switching on Allow from this source for a particular source app. Completing the advanced flow does not remove the install warning: Google’s directions still require the user to choose Install anyway if they decide to proceed. Because this is an override for an unverified developer, it should not be used as a routine workaround for every install.

Do not enable that advanced control merely because an ordinary install prompt appears. It addresses an unverified-developer block, and Google recommends installing from verified developers. If you do not recognize or cannot verify the developer, stop rather than overriding the warning.
Which permission should you change?
Use the message on the phone to identify the issue before changing a setting:
- The source app needs permission to request an install: On Pixel, begin the install from that source app, tap Settings on Android’s prompt, and enable Allow from this source for the displayed app.
- You want to stop a source app from making future install requests: Open Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps, select that app, and turn off its source permission.
- Android says the developer is unverified: This is the separate developer-verification block. The source permission alone may not resolve it. Check whether the developer is verified and consult Google’s advanced-flow guidance if you are facing that exact block.
In short, the least broad change is usually the relevant one: grant access only to the source app that needs it, and revoke that app’s access when it is no longer needed. Do not enable an advanced unverified-developer control to solve an unrelated prompt.

Does turning off the permission uninstall apps I already installed?
No. Revoking the source app’s permission stops it from requesting future installations through this setting; it does not by itself remove apps that are already installed. Uninstall an app separately if you no longer want it.
Is Install unknown apps one global Android switch?
The documented Pixel instructions have you select the source app whose access you want to change. Treat it as a per-source permission rather than assuming there is one global switch. Manufacturer-customized Android versions may organize the controls differently.

Use a source you trust, independently confirm the publisher, and do not proceed if you cannot verify the app’s origin.

Why does Android still block an app after I allow the source?
The warning may be for a different control. A message specifically identifying an unverified developer relates to Android’s developer-verification system, which is separate from Allow from this source. Google’s separate advanced flow includes enabling Allow apps from unverified developers in Developer options and waiting 24 hours. Do not use that override unless you are facing that specific block and have considered whether you can verify the developer.
What is the 24-hour delay for unverified developers?
Google’s current instructions for the separate unverified-developer flow require a 24-hour security delay after enabling the relevant advanced setting. Afterward, the user chooses whether to keep that flow enabled for seven days or indefinitely. The delay does not apply to the ordinary Pixel steps for granting or revoking Allow from this source.
