To use your processor’s integrated graphics (iGPU), first confirm that the processor includes an iGPU and that the motherboard supports it. Enter the board’s BIOS or UEFI setup, choose the integrated adapter as the primary display—or enable the board’s multi-monitor option if you want both the iGPU and a discrete card active—then save and connect the monitor to the motherboard’s HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C output. If video disappears, restore firmware defaults or clear CMOS using the motherboard manual.

What enabling integrated graphics actually does

Integrated graphics are built into the processor and use system memory rather than a separate graphics card’s dedicated memory. A motherboard’s rear HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C connector is only a physical pathway to that processor graphics engine; the connector does not create graphics capability by itself. If the installed processor has no iGPU, the motherboard video ports cannot produce an image, regardless of BIOS settings.

Desktop firmware often chooses a discrete PCIe graphics card automatically when one is installed. Intel notes that some desktop computers automatically disable integrated graphics when they detect a discrete graphics card, although a BIOS option may allow the iGPU to be enabled again. The behavior and the setting name differ by motherboard model. Intel’s support guidance is documented at Intel Support: How to Enable Integrated Graphics (article last reviewed September 4, 2024).

Check compatibility before opening BIOS or UEFI

Verify the processor has integrated graphics

Look up the exact processor model in its official specifications. Do not infer iGPU support from the motherboard’s connector list: a board can include HDMI or DisplayPort even when a particular installed processor cannot drive those ports. A discrete graphics card also cannot add integrated-graphics support to a processor that lacks it.

Verify motherboard and processor support

Confirm that the motherboard firmware supports the installed processor and that the board manual documents an onboard, IGD, or iGPU setting. A board may expose different options depending on the processor generation. If the processor is unsupported, graphics settings may be absent or the system may fail before the firmware screen appears.

Identify the cable and connector you will use

Plan to connect the monitor to the motherboard’s rear-I/O connector after selecting the iGPU. Use HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C only when that connector exists on both the motherboard and monitor (or when an appropriate adapter is explicitly supported). A cable plugged into the discrete card tests the discrete-card path, not the motherboard-output path.

Keep the board manual available

Intel states that the method of accessing this setting differs for every motherboard manufacturer. The setup key, menu location, and labels can change between models and firmware revisions, so use the manual for the exact board rather than assuming that a menu shown on another model will exist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enter BIOS or UEFI safely

  1. Shut down completely, then start the computer with the keyboard connected.
  2. During the initial startup screen, press the setup key specified by the motherboard documentation. If the operating system starts, restart and try again; do not change settings from a different board’s instructions.
  3. When the firmware interface opens, note the current graphics-related values before changing them. Photographing the page can make recovery easier.

UEFI is the modern firmware standard that replaced the older BIOS interface. Manufacturers may still call the setup screen “BIOS,” even when the underlying firmware is UEFI. AMD recommends UEFI mode for compatibility with newer Radeon graphics and directs users to the system or motherboard documentation for exact settings.

Set the integrated adapter as the primary display

The primary-display setting determines which adapter initializes the boot screen. Select the integrated option, save, reboot, and then move the monitor cable to the motherboard connector. The wording varies, but the operation is the same: choose the onboard processor graphics instead of the PCIe add-in card.

  1. Open the firmware’s advanced, chipset, or graphics configuration area.
  2. Find the setting named Primary Display, Initial Display Output, Primary Video Device, Initiate Graphics Adapter, or a similar label.
  3. Choose the integrated value—commonly IGD, IGD Video, or Onboard.
  4. Save the change with the firmware’s Save and Exit command and allow the computer to restart.
  5. After power-on, connect the monitor to the motherboard’s HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C output selected for processor graphics.

Do not connect the monitor to the discrete card while testing this change. The discrete card’s ports can remain physically active while the firmware is initializing another adapter, which makes an otherwise correct setting appear ineffective.

Vendor menu names and paths

Use these documented labels as a translation guide, then confirm the exact path in your board manual. A firmware update or a different processor can change which entries are shown.

Keep both the iGPU and discrete card active

Enable iGPU Multi-Monitor, IGPU Multi-Monitor, or the equivalent option when you need displays connected to both sets of connectors. ASUS documents that this option is required for display from both integrated and add-on graphics. Gigabyte’s Integrated Graphics = Force serves a similar purpose on supported boards by keeping onboard graphics enabled despite a PCIe card.

Multi-monitor mode does not automatically move every display to the motherboard. Each monitor must be connected to the adapter you intend to use, and the operating system will enumerate the active outputs after reboot. If you want the iGPU to provide the boot screen as well, set it as the primary adapter in addition to enabling multi-monitor support.

Understand UMA frame-buffer choices

On Gigabyte firmware, UMA Frame Buffer Size appears when Integrated Graphics is set to Force. That value reserves part of system memory for the integrated graphics engine. There is no universal size recommendation, so use the board manual’s available values and avoid treating a value from another model as a guaranteed requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save, reconnect, and verify the result

  1. Use the firmware’s Save Changes and Exit action. A plain reboot without saving leaves the previous adapter selection unchanged.
  2. With the system powered off or restarting, move the monitor cable to the motherboard’s selected HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C connector.
  3. Wait for the firmware screen and operating-system login to appear. If you enabled multi-monitor mode, connect additional displays to the discrete card or motherboard according to the arrangement you chose.
  4. If the system starts but a particular screen remains dark, check that its cable is attached to the intended adapter before changing more firmware values.

Troubleshooting a missing motherboard display

The motherboard connector never produces an image

  • Recheck that the processor model includes integrated graphics. A motherboard connector cannot compensate for a processor without an iGPU.
  • Confirm the monitor cable is connected to the motherboard, not to the discrete card. MSI’s guidance specifically directs users who intend to use processor graphics to the DisplayPort, HDMI, or Type-C ports on the motherboard’s rear I/O.
  • Return to the graphics menu and verify that the primary adapter is IGD, IGD Video, or Onboard, rather than Auto selecting the PCIe card.
  • Check the board manual for a separate multi-monitor or force setting. Some models keep the iGPU disabled whenever a discrete card is present unless that option is enabled.

The graphics option is missing

Menu names and availability are model-specific. Intel’s support article states that every motherboard manufacturer uses a different BIOS method. Confirm the exact board and processor combination, inspect the manual’s chipset or graphics sections, and check whether the setting appears only after the processor is recognized correctly. Do not substitute a setting from a different vendor or model.

The screen went blank immediately after saving

  1. Power the system off and attach the monitor to the output of the adapter you selected. A change to IGD will not send video through the discrete card’s ports.
  2. If no connector produces a picture, restore BIOS defaults or clear CMOS using the motherboard manual’s recovery procedure. The procedure and jumper or button location are board-specific.
  3. Restart with the monitor connected to the known-good output, enter firmware again, and change one graphics option at a time.

Restoring defaults removes the unverified graphics selection; it does not prove that the processor lacks an iGPU. Reapply the setting only after confirming the correct connector and documenting the original values.

The discrete card still initializes first

Set the primary display value explicitly to IGD, IGD Video, or Onboard instead of leaving it on Auto. On Gigabyte boards, use Integrated Graphics = Force when the goal is to keep onboard graphics active alongside an installed PCIe card. On ASUS or supported ASRock Intel boards, enable the corresponding multi-monitor option when both adapters must remain available.

Only one of two monitors works

First determine whether the second monitor is connected to the adapter that firmware is allowed to use. A single-primary configuration may initialize only the selected adapter; connect both screens to that adapter or enable iGPU Multi-Monitor/IGPU Multi-Monitor when one screen must use the iGPU and the other the add-in card. Verify each cable and connector independently before changing firmware again.

One monitor on the iGPU and one on a PCIe card

Enable the board’s multi-monitor setting, keep or select the desired primary adapter, save, and connect one monitor to the motherboard and the other to the discrete card. If the board uses Gigabyte terminology, select Force for Integrated Graphics; if it uses ASUS or ASRock terminology, look for iGPU Multi-Monitor or IGPU Multi-Monitor in the documented graphics or chipset menu.

Motherboard HDMI stopped working after installing a graphics card

This is consistent with firmware automatically disabling the iGPU when it detects a discrete card. Re-enter setup using the board’s documented key, enable the integrated or multi-monitor setting, save, and move the cable to the motherboard connector. If the option is absent, verify processor support and consult the exact board manual.

BIOS and UEFI terminology you will encounter

“BIOS” is commonly used as a generic name for the firmware setup utility. UEFI is the newer standard and may present a graphical interface, mouse support, or different menu organization. The graphics concepts remain the same: a primary adapter selection, an optional setting that keeps both adapters active, and a save-and-reboot action. AMD recommends UEFI mode for compatibility with newer Radeon graphics, but the exact switch and menu depend on the system and motherboard documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop changing settings

Stop and document the current state when the board manual does not list an iGPU option, the processor specification does not include integrated graphics, or clearing CMOS does not restore any video output. At that point, further menu changes cannot create hardware support. Use the motherboard and processor documentation to confirm compatibility before replacing cables or firmware values.

There is no universal success-rate or performance statistic for this configuration. Official guidance focuses on hardware support, firmware terminology, connector selection, and recovery procedures; results depend on the exact processor, motherboard, firmware revision, and display arrangement.
